Use two different control layers to change Blu-ray sound on a PS5. For console-wide routing, open Settings > Sound > Audio Output and choose the output device, HDMI behavior, amplifier configuration, headphone output, and preferred audio format. For a movie’s language, soundtrack, subtitles, or alternate audio mode, open the disc player’s playback controls while the Blu-ray is running; those disc-player controls take priority over the general console settings.

A PS5 with a disc drive can play supported Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and DVD media. The original CFI-1000 Digital Edition cannot play discs at all, while CFI-2000 Digital Edition and CFI-7000-series consoles can accept Sony’s optional CFI-ZDD1 drive. If a Blu-ray has no sound, check the display or audio device, HDMI output selection, system software, connection path, cable, port, and disc condition in that order.

What is the difference between PS5 audio settings and Blu-ray playback controls?

The PS5 has a system-level audio menu and the disc player’s own playback menu. The system menu determines where the console sends sound and how it communicates with that device. The Blu-ray menu determines which soundtrack, language, subtitle track, or alternate audio mode the current disc uses.

What you want to change Where to change it What it affects
TV, headset, soundbar, or AV receiver output Settings > Sound > Audio Output Console-wide routing and device behavior
HDMI device type and receiver channel configuration Settings > Sound > Audio Output How the PS5 describes and configures the connected HDMI equipment
Preferred audio format Settings > Sound > Audio Output > Audio Format (Priority) The format the console prioritizes when outputting compatible audio
Movie language, soundtrack, subtitles, or alternate audio mode Disc-player playback controls while the movie is playing The current Blu-ray or DVD title

Sony Interactive Entertainment specifically says, “Some apps, such as the disc player, have their own audio settings that should be prioritized.” In practice, changing the console’s preferred format will not replace a disc’s selected language or subtitle track; make that choice in the player controls.

How do I change the PS5’s system-wide Blu-ray audio output?

Use the Audio Output page when you need to change the physical route for sound or the way the PS5 communicates with a television, headset, soundbar, or AV receiver.

  1. From the PS5 home screen, open Settings.
  2. Select Sound, then Audio Output.
  3. Choose the correct Output Device. For a television, soundbar, or receiver connected over HDMI, select the HDMI device the PS5 detects.
  4. Review Switch Output Device Automatically. This controls whether the PS5 changes its active output when another supported device is connected or becomes available.
  5. Set HDMI Device Type to match the equipment connected to the console.
  6. If an AV receiver is the output path, set its AV Amplifier channel count and configure the speaker positions shown by the console.
  7. Review Headphone Output if you are listening through a headset rather than the television or receiver.
  8. Open Audio Format (Priority) and choose the format you want the console to prioritize, subject to what the connected equipment and the disc can handle.

After changing a setting, start the Blu-ray again and listen for the result. If the new option produces silence, return to the same page, select the detected HDMI output, and test the simplest path first: PS5 directly to the display.

Which output path should I choose?

Listening setup Audio Output focus Useful check
TV speakers Detected HDMI output and the appropriate HDMI device type Confirm the television is not muted and is using the HDMI input connected to the PS5
Headset Headphone output and the headset device selected by the PS5 Check that the headset is connected and that its own volume control is audible
Soundbar HDMI output and the soundbar’s connection path Temporarily connect the PS5 directly to the display if an intermediary is suspected
AV receiver and speakers HDMI device type, AV-amplifier channel count, and speaker positions Verify that the receiver is on the input used by the PS5 and that its output is not muted

How do I change a Blu-ray’s language, soundtrack, or subtitles?

Make title-specific changes from the disc player’s controls while the movie is running. The exact names and available choices depend on how that Blu-ray was authored.

  1. Insert the supported Blu-ray or DVD. The Disc Player appears in the PS5 media home, and playback can begin from there.
  2. Start the movie, then open the disc player’s on-screen playback controls.
  3. Choose the disc’s audio, soundtrack, language, subtitle, or alternate-mode control.
  4. Select the track or language you want and return to playback.

If a disc offers multiple language or commentary tracks, the player menu is the authoritative place to select among them. A console-wide audio-format choice does not create tracks that are absent from the disc.

Why does a Blu-ray menu matter when the PS5 already has audio settings?

The two menus solve different problems. Settings > Sound > Audio Output chooses the route and preferred output behavior for the console, while the disc player chooses content embedded in that title. This is why a soundtrack change should be made during playback even after the HDMI and format settings are correct.

Which Blu-ray and DVD formats can a PS5 play?

Sony lists the following supported optical media for PS5 disc-player models:

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Media category Formats listed by Sony
Ultra HD Blu-ray Ultra HD Blu-ray discs
Blu-ray BD-ROM and BD-R/RE
DVD DVD-ROM, DVD-R/RW, and DVD+R/RW
Other listed support AVCHD and CPRM

Format support does not guarantee that every disc will read. Sony also warns that PS5 consoles cannot play burned discs or audio CDs. A recordable format can still fail when the disc is burned, unfinalized, poorly recorded, damaged, dusty, or encoded in a way the player cannot read. Treat the media type and the disc’s actual authoring and condition as separate checks.

Can the PS5 Digital Edition play Blu-rays?

The answer depends on the hardware generation. The original CFI-1000 PS5 Digital Edition has no disc drive and does not support disc-based games or disc media. Sony says a CFI-ZDD1 drive can be added to the CFI-2000 Digital Edition and CFI-7000-series consoles; once the compatible drive is installed, those models can use the disc-player functions supported by the hardware and software.

PS5 model situation Blu-ray capability
PS5 with an integrated disc drive Can use supported Blu-ray and DVD media
CFI-1000 Digital Edition Cannot play disc-based games or media
CFI-2000 Digital Edition with compatible CFI-ZDD1 drive Can use the added disc drive for supported media
CFI-7000-series console with compatible CFI-ZDD1 drive Can use the added disc drive for supported media

Do not troubleshoot a missing Disc Player on a CFI-1000 Digital Edition as if it were an audio-output fault: that model has no optical drive to detect the disc.

Why is there no sound when I play a Blu-ray on PS5?

Work from the outside of the signal path toward the disc. The following sequence isolates a muted display, a wrong PS5 output, a software issue, an intermediary device, a cable or port, and finally the disc itself.

  1. Check the display or audio device. Make sure the television, soundbar, or receiver is powered on, set to the PS5’s input, and not muted. If you use a headset, check its connection and independent volume control.
  2. Set the PS5 to an HDMI output. Open Settings > Sound > Audio Output and select the HDMI device detected by the console. Recheck HDMI Device Type if the connected equipment has changed.
  3. Update PS5 system software. Playback and device-compatibility problems can persist when the console is not running current system software.
  4. Connect the PS5 directly to the display. Temporarily remove an AV receiver, soundbar, HDMI switch, capture device, or other intermediary. If direct HDMI restores sound, add devices back one at a time to identify the failing link.
  5. Try another HDMI cable. Sony identifies a faulty HDMI cable as a possible cause of audio problems. The PS5 includes an HDMI 2.1 cable and Sony recommends it for high-performance features; use that cable or a known-good replacement when testing.
  6. Try another HDMI port. A port can be damaged, configured differently, or unable to negotiate correctly with the connected device. Move the cable to another suitable input and select that input on the display.
  7. Test another supported Blu-ray or DVD. If another title has sound, the original disc’s condition, recording, encoding, or authoring is the more likely cause.

What does a direct-HDMI test tell you?

A direct connection removes extra handshakes and processing stages from the path. It does not prove that the receiver or soundbar is defective, but it tells you whether to concentrate on the intermediary’s input selection, output configuration, cable, or compatibility before changing more PS5 settings.

How do I fix a PS5 Blu-ray that will not read or start?

A no-read message and a no-sound problem are different symptoms. If the Disc Player cannot start the title, check the disc and playback environment before adjusting audio formats.

Clean and retest the disc

Remove the disc and wipe it with a soft cloth. Try another supported Blu-ray or DVD. Scratches, dust, and poor recording quality can prevent playback even when the format appears on Sony’s supported list.

Consider recording and finalization

Burned or unfinalized discs may not play. Sony also notes that software encoding can affect compatibility. A commercially pressed disc that works in another player is a more useful comparison than repeatedly testing the same damaged or user-recorded disc.

Refresh the PS5 storage database if needed

If more than one otherwise supported disc fails after cleaning and cable checks, use the PS5’s Safe Mode cache/database repair option. This is a system-maintenance step, not a way to add support for burned discs, audio CDs, or an unsupported format.

Allow protected Blu-rays to renew their keys

Sony’s manual says the AACS encryption keys used by protected Blu-rays may need renewal. The key renews automatically when the console is connected to the internet. Connect the PS5, allow the renewal process to complete, and then try the protected title again.

How should I configure a PS5 when an AV receiver or soundbar is involved?

Start with the simplest working arrangement, then rebuild the system. The PS5’s Audio Output page exposes the settings that matter for HDMI equipment, but every additional device adds another input, output, and cable to verify.

  1. Connect the PS5 directly to the television or display and confirm that Blu-ray sound works.
  2. In Settings > Sound > Audio Output, verify the selected output device and HDMI device type.
  3. If you use an AV receiver, set its channel count and speaker positions in the PS5 menu to match the receiver’s actual speaker arrangement.
  4. Reconnect the receiver or soundbar using the normal installation path, select its correct input, and test the same disc.
  5. If sound disappears only after reconnection, test a different HDMI cable and port, then check the intermediary’s own mute and input settings.

This staged approach prevents you from changing the disc soundtrack when the real failure is an HDMI path or an incorrectly selected receiver input.

What should I check before replacing hardware?

Use this short decision checklist to avoid buying a drive, cable, or audio device for the wrong problem:

  • No Disc Player appears: confirm whether the console is the CFI-1000 Digital Edition, which has no disc capability.
  • The movie plays but the language is wrong: open the disc player’s playback controls and choose the title’s audio or subtitle track.
  • The movie has no sound on any title: verify mute, HDMI output selection, software updates, direct connection, cable, and port.
  • Only one title fails: inspect the disc for dust or scratches and consider recording quality, finalization, encoding, or protected-content key renewal.
  • Sound works direct but not through a receiver or switch: focus on the intermediary’s input, output, cable, and compatibility settings.
  • A recordable or audio disc fails: remember that PS5 does not support burned discs or audio CDs, even though Sony lists several recordable Blu-ray and DVD formats among supported media.

Does changing Audio Format (Priority) change every Blu-ray soundtrack?

No. That setting controls the format the PS5 prioritizes for output; it does not add, remove, or translate the language and subtitle tracks authored on a disc. Select the title’s soundtrack or subtitle from the disc-player controls while the movie is playing.

Why can a protected Blu-ray work offline and then fail later?

Protected Blu-rays use AACS encryption keys that may require renewal. The PS5 renews those keys automatically when connected to the internet, so connecting the console can restore playback without changing the disc or speaker settings.

Will AV-amplifier channel settings matter if I use TV speakers?

Those channel-count and speaker-position controls are intended for an AV-amplifier setup. When the television is the listening device, concentrate on the detected HDMI output, HDMI device type, and the television’s own input and mute state.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I change subtitles without changing the PS5’s audio output device?

Yes. Leave the console’s HDMI or headphone routing alone and open the disc player’s playback controls during the movie. Subtitle and soundtrack selections are title-level choices, independent of the device route.

Do all Blu-ray discs provide the same language and audio options?

No. Available languages, commentary tracks, subtitle choices, and alternate modes are authored on each title. The player can select only options that the inserted disc supplies.

What is the quickest way to isolate a bad soundbar or receiver?

Connect the PS5 directly to the display with a known-good HDMI cable and test a second supported disc. If sound returns, investigate the intermediary’s input, output, cable, or configuration rather than the disc-player menu.

Can a PS5 play an audio CD while I troubleshoot Blu-ray sound?

No. Sony lists audio CDs among the media the PS5 cannot play. Use a supported Blu-ray or DVD as the comparison disc instead.
