Start with the ticket seller, then use the dispute process for the way you paid. Ask the box office, platform, organizer or individual seller for a refund or correction in writing, and save the response. If the seller does not fix an unauthorized charge, missing tickets, a canceled event, an overcharge, materially different tickets or a refused refund, take the matter to your card issuer, bank or payment app.
The deadlines and protections are not interchangeable. A credit-card billing error generally requires written notice within 60 calendar days after the statement containing the error was sent. Debit and electronic-transfer rules can have shorter notice windows. PayPal, Venmo and Cash App apply their own eligibility rules, claim categories and deadlines.

What should I do before disputing a concert-ticket charge?
Contact the seller first and create a written record. This is the most useful first step whether you bought from a primary ticket platform, a venue box office, an event organizer or an individual seller. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) advises consumers to “First, reach out to the company that sold the product or service to you.” PayPal also requires an attempt to resolve the problem with the seller before using its Purchase Protection process.
- Identify the order number, event, venue, date, seat or ticket identifiers, payment date and amount.
- Describe the problem precisely: unauthorized transaction, tickets not delivered, cancellation without the promised refund, duplicate or excessive charge, tickets materially different from the listing, or failure to honor a stated policy.
- State the remedy you want, such as delivery of valid tickets, a specified refund or correction of the amount.
- Send the request through a channel that creates a record, such as email, a support form that supplies a case number, or written correspondence.
- Save the seller’s response, including a refusal, an offer that does not solve the problem, or the absence of a response.
Do not describe a purchase as unauthorized merely because the seller later failed to deliver or refund it. If you made the payment, explain the actual nonreceipt, cancellation, overcharge or misdescription. Accurate wording helps the receiving institution place the dispute in the correct category.

Which kind of ticket problem do you have?
The correct category determines what evidence and deadline matter most.
Unauthorized transaction
You did not make or approve the charge. Report it immediately to the card issuer, bank or app and follow its identity-verification instructions. Do not use this category for a purchase you made yourself.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Tickets were never delivered
You paid, but the promised tickets or delivery credentials never arrived. Keep the listing, delivery promise, order confirmation and messages showing that you tried to obtain the tickets.
Event canceled, postponed or materially changed
Check the order-specific refund or cancellation terms and the notice from the venue, organizer or platform. Ask the seller to apply the stated remedy and preserve the notice. A cancellation does not automatically make every payment method refundable under the same rules.
Overcharge or duplicate charge
Compare the agreed price, fees and quantity with the statement or app record. Identify the exact amount that is wrong rather than disputing an entire legitimate order.
Tickets materially differed from the listing
Examples include a different event, date, section or quantity than promised. Save the original listing and the tickets or delivery record that show the difference.

Which dispute route matches the way you paid?
Use the institution that handled the funds, not a generic “chargeback” request. Each system has different deadlines and coverage.
| Payment method | Where to file | Potentially relevant problems | Deadline or timing highlighted by the rules | Important caution |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Credit card | Card issuer’s billing-dispute department | Unauthorized charge, nonreceipt, cancellation without refund, overcharge, duplicate charge, materially different service or policy breach | Written billing-error notice within 60 calendar days after the statement containing the error was sent; issuer generally acknowledges within 30 days and investigates within two billing cycles | Send notice to the billing-dispute address, which may differ from the payment address; pay undisputed amounts on time |
| Debit card or bank-funded electronic transfer | Bank or credit union | Especially unauthorized transactions; other claims depend on the account agreement and applicable law | For certain lost-or-stolen-debit-card situations, notice within two business days can limit liability; a 60-day statement rule can apply to other unauthorized withdrawals | Investigation and provisional-credit rules differ from credit-card billing-error rules |
| PayPal | PayPal Resolution Center, if eligible | Eligible item-not-received and other Purchase Protection categories; certain event tickets can qualify | Item-not-received claims generally must be opened within 180 days of payment, subject to the applicable terms | Eligibility is fact-dependent; choose either a PayPal claim or a card-issuer dispute when the PayPal payment was card-funded |
| Venmo | Venmo support or its purchase-protection process, if eligible | Eligible purchases marked as a purchase or made through an approved business account | Use the deadline in the applicable Venmo terms | Concert tickets are a common scam category; an ordinary person-to-person payment is not automatically protected |
| Cash App Pay | Merchant first, then the applicable Cash App process | Refund or cancellation questions governed primarily by the merchant’s policy | Follow the transaction’s terms and Cash App instructions | Do not assume a normal person-to-person transfer has the same protection as a card purchase or eligible protected purchase |
How do I dispute a concert ticket charge on a credit card?
Use the card issuer’s billing-error process promptly and in writing. A phone call can start the process, but the CFPB says you must also send a written billing-error notice within 60 calendar days after the charge appeared on the statement.
- Call the issuer promptly. Ask for the billing-dispute procedure and confirm the correct mailing address.
- Write the notice. Include your name and address, the account number or requested last four digits, merchant name, transaction date and amount, the exact error category and the remedy you request.
- Attach useful records. Include the order confirmation, statement entry, listing, cancellation notice, refund policy, delivery history and seller correspondence. Send copies, not irreplaceable originals.
- Use the billing-dispute address on the statement. It may be different from the address used for payments. Keep a copy and proof of delivery.
- Continue paying correct charges. You generally do not have to pay the disputed fees or related finance charges while the issuer investigates, but you remain responsible for every undisputed charge and its due date.
- Track the investigation. The CFPB says the issuer generally must acknowledge receipt within 30 days and describes a general investigation period of two billing cycles. Respond by the stated deadline if the issuer requests more information.
After proper written notice, the issuer generally cannot charge interest on the disputed amount while the investigation is pending. That protection does not erase valid portions of the bill or permit you to stop paying the entire account.
What to say in the written notice
Use a short factual chronology rather than an accusation. Identify what you ordered, what the seller promised, what happened, when you contacted the seller, and the amount you want corrected. For example: “I purchased two tickets for [event] on [date] for [amount]. The seller promised delivery by [date], but no tickets arrived. I contacted the seller on [dates] and requested a refund. I request reversal of the undelivered portion of the charge.” Put any variable details inside the actual letter; do not claim the transaction was unauthorized if you made it.
What evidence should I save?
Preserve the complete transaction record before a listing, message thread or event page disappears.
- Order confirmation, receipt and payment authorization.
- Ticket listing, seat details, event date, delivery promise and refund or cancellation terms.
- Card statement or app transaction record showing the merchant, date and amount.
- Emails, text messages, direct messages, call notes and seller responses.
- Cancellation, postponement, venue, promoter or platform notices.
- Screenshots showing the original offer, a promised refund or a failed delivery.
- Your written request to the seller and the dispute submitted to the issuer, bank or app.
- Temporary credits, denials, requests for more information and final decisions.
Organize files by date and keep the original email headers or downloadable statements where possible. A clear timeline lets the decision-maker distinguish a genuine billing error from a disagreement about a policy.
How are debit-card and bank-transfer disputes different?
Report an unauthorized debit or electronic transfer to the bank or credit union immediately. Regulation E rules can impose different notice deadlines, investigation duties and provisional-credit requirements than the credit-card process.

The CFPB says that, in certain lost-or-stolen-debit-card situations, notifying the institution within two business days can limit liability. For other unauthorized withdrawals, a 60-day period measured from the statement can apply. The exact result depends on how the transaction occurred and when you learned of it, so use the bank’s fraud number as soon as you see the charge.
If you willingly paid a seller by debit card but the tickets were not delivered, explain nonreceipt or another factual error. Ask the bank which electronic-transfer or debit-card dispute form applies, and follow its instructions for submitting the seller correspondence and transaction record.
How do I dispute a concert-ticket payment through PayPal?
Open the transaction in PayPal’s Resolution Center if the payment is eligible, select the factual claim category and upload the records requested. PayPal states that eligible items can include certain intangible items such as event tickets, but eligibility depends on the transaction and the applicable Purchase Protection terms.
- Contact the seller and document the attempt to resolve the issue.
- Open an eligible claim in the Resolution Center within the applicable deadline. PayPal’s general item-not-received window is 180 days from the date payment was sent.
- Choose the category that matches the facts, such as item not received, and provide the order, listing, delivery and correspondence records.
- Answer PayPal’s requests by their deadlines and keep copies of every submission.
If you funded PayPal with a debit or credit card, PayPal says you may have a separate dispute right with that issuer. You must choose whether to pursue the PayPal claim or the card-issuer dispute; do not seek double recovery for the same loss. A PayPal decision and a card-issuer process can have different evidence requirements and outcomes.
Can Venmo refund a concert-ticket scam?
Sometimes, but using Venmo alone does not guarantee protection. Venmo identifies concert tickets as a common scam category and says eligible purchases may be investigated and refunded when the buyer prevails. Eligibility generally depends on whether the payment was marked as a purchase or made through an approved business account.
Review the transaction details and report the problem through Venmo promptly. Provide the listing, seller identity, payment record, delivery promise and your attempt to resolve the issue. A person-to-person transfer that was not handled as an eligible purchase may not receive the same review or remedy, so do not assume a Venmo payment is equivalent to a credit-card purchase.
What does Cash App Pay do when a ticket seller refuses a refund?
Cash App’s terms generally direct refund and cancellation questions to the merchant’s refund or cancellation policy. Start by sending the merchant the order details and the policy language that supports your request.

Does the federal claims-and-defenses rule cover concert tickets?
A separate federal claims-and-defenses route may apply in limited circumstances, but it is not a universal concert-ticket chargeback rule. The model disclosure describes conditions including a purchase over $50, use of a credit card, an unpaid balance, and a purchase in the consumer’s home state or within 100 miles of the current address, subject to exceptions.
Many online ticket orders, fully paid purchases and out-of-area transactions may not fit those conditions. First try the ordinary billing-error or issuer dispute process and ask the issuer whether the claims-and-defenses provision applies to your facts. Do not assume that dissatisfaction alone qualifies.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How do ticket-platform policies affect a dispute?
Payment options and refund rights can vary by event and ticket type. A platform may accept major credit cards, PayPal, Venmo, Apple Pay, Google Pay and other methods, but the policy attached to your order controls the specific exceptions, refund procedure and dispute language.
Read the purchase policy, delivery terms and event-specific notices saved with the order. Some platform policies contain arbitration language or exceptions for particular events and transactions. That contract does not remove the need to report an unauthorized transaction promptly or to meet a card issuer’s billing-error deadline.
How to reduce the risk before buying
- Prefer an official primary seller or venue box office.
- Read the refund and cancellation terms before paying.
- Be skeptical when a seller insists on a peer-to-peer money-transfer app.
- Keep the listing and policy at the time of purchase.
What if the issuer, bank or app denies the dispute?
Read the written decision and identify the missing fact or document. If the decision says the transaction was authorized, clarify whether your evidence instead proves nonreceipt, cancellation, overcharge or misdescription. If the institution asks for more information, answer by its deadline and attach the timeline rather than sending unrelated material.
For a credit-card problem that remains unresolved, use the issuer’s internal complaint or appeal process and then consider submitting a complaint to the CFPB. For a bank-account transfer, use the bank’s complaint process and the applicable regulator’s complaint channel. For PayPal, Venmo or Cash App, follow the app’s stated appeal or support process. Keep every denial, temporary-credit notice and final response.

A temporary credit is not necessarily a final decision. The institution may reverse it if the investigation finds the charge valid, so do not treat provisional funds as permanent until the case is closed.
What mistakes can weaken a ticket dispute?
- Waiting beyond the applicable written-notice or app claim deadline.
- Calling a purchase unauthorized when you actually made it.
- Sending the notice to the card-payment address instead of the billing-dispute address.
- Disputing legitimate portions of a mixed or partially refunded order.
- Failing to contact the seller or preserve proof of that attempt.
- Assuming PayPal, Venmo and Cash App use the same eligibility rules.
- Seeking payment from both PayPal and the card issuer for the same loss.
- Stopping payment on the entire credit-card balance instead of paying undisputed charges.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I dispute tickets I bought myself but never received?
Yes. Describe the claim as nonreceipt and provide the order, promised delivery date, seller messages and payment record. An issuer or app can treat that differently from an unauthorized transaction.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCan I dispute a postponed concert if the event was not canceled?
Check the event-specific postponement and refund terms, then ask the seller to apply them in writing. Whether a refund is available depends on the policy and the payment method’s rules; postponement alone does not establish a universal right to reversal.
Will a temporary credit from my card issuer stay in my account?
Not necessarily. A provisional credit can be reversed after the investigation, so keep the funds available until the issuer sends its final decision.
Can I stop paying my credit-card bill while a ticket dispute is open?
You may withhold the properly disputed amount while the issuer investigates, but correct charges and any undisputed balance remain due on time. Missing those payments can create a separate delinquency problem.
What should I do if the ticket seller disappears?
Save the failed emails, unavailable listing and transaction record, then file with the institution that handled the payment before its deadline. Explain that you attempted seller contact and attach the evidence showing nonresponse.
