To catch a creator’s comeback, subscribe to the channel, choose All notifications on its bell, and check your Subscriptions feed for recent uploads. Subscribing puts new videos in the feed; the bell is an alert preference, not a promise that every eligible upload will reach your device. YouTube’s delivery rules and your account or device settings can affect alerts.

The short answer
If a creator has disappeared and you want to know when they return, do not choose between subscribing and notifications. They solve different parts of the problem. Subscribe first, set the channel bell to All notifications, and use the Subscriptions feed as your dependable review habit.

The bell can prompt you soon after an eligible upload or live stream. The feed is where YouTube says recently uploaded videos from channels you follow appear. If a push alert is delayed, filtered, capped, blocked by a device, or withheld under a current delivery policy, the feed gives you another way to find the comeback.
What is the difference between YouTube subscriptions and notifications?
A subscription is the relationship between your account and a channel. Once you subscribe, that channel’s new videos can appear in your Subscriptions feed. YouTube Help describes the feed as showing recently uploaded videos from your subscriptions on both mobile and computer.

Notifications are a separate alert layer. The bell preference tells YouTube how broadly to notify you about activity from a channel. You can be subscribed without receiving every alert, because a subscription does not automatically mean that All is selected. You can also have notifications enabled while still needing to open YouTube to review the feed.
That difference matters for a comeback. A subscription gives you an ongoing place to look. A notification is a prompt that may save you from having to look at the right moment. The prompt is convenient, but it relies on personalization rules, notification limits, account settings, device permissions, and YouTube’s current delivery policies.

Which setting should I use to follow a creator’s comeback?
Use both settings together:
- Subscribe to place the channel’s recent uploads in your Subscriptions feed.
- Choose All notifications on the channel bell for the strongest available alert preference.
- Open the Subscriptions tab periodically, especially after a long quiet period.
All is the better choice when missing a long-form return or live stream matters more than minimizing alerts. Personalized is quieter, but it is intentionally selective and therefore less dependable for a specific creator’s comeback. YouTube may decide that an upload is less relevant based on your viewing and notification habits.
This pairing also separates discovery from verification. A notification may tell you that something happened. The feed lets you check what the channel has uploaded recently, even when no push alert appeared.
How do I turn on All notifications for a channel?
You can change the preference from the creator’s channel page or from one of that creator’s videos. The setting applies to the channel you select.
- Open the creator’s channel or a video published by that creator.
- Select Subscribe if you are not already subscribed.
- Select the notification bell beside the subscription control.
- Choose All notifications, rather than Personalized, when your goal is the broadest alert coverage for eligible uploads and live streams.
- Later, open the Subscriptions tab to review recent uploads instead of relying only on a pop-up or phone banner.
If you unsubscribed in the past and then subscribed again, inspect the bell after resubscribing. YouTube says the notification setting resets to Personalized or None when you unsubscribe. A channel that looks followed may therefore not have the alert preference you remember.

What does All actually cover?
YouTube says All notifications cover long-form uploads and live streams across mobile, web, or inbox notifications. It is the strongest channel-level preference, but it is not an unconditional delivery guarantee.

Shorts have a specific caveat. YouTube says some Shorts notifications may still be personalized even when All is selected. If the comeback arrives as a Short, the absence of a push alert does not necessarily mean the subscription or bell failed. Check the channel and the Subscriptions feed.
Notifications can also concern activity other than a standard upload, and YouTube can show recommendations or other alerts in the notification area. That makes notifications useful as prompts, but less suitable as a complete chronological record of everything a subscribed channel has posted. The Subscriptions feed is the more direct place to review recent uploads from channels you follow.
Does the bell notify me every time a creator uploads?
No. All gives you the strongest preference, but several documented exceptions can prevent a push notification.
- Personalized filtering: With Personalized selected, YouTube can use your watch history, how often you watch the channel, a video’s popularity, and how often you open notifications to decide which alerts to send. This can reduce noise, but it can also hide a comeback from a channel you have not watched recently.
- Shorts treatment: Some Shorts notifications may remain personalized even with All selected. Long-form videos and live streams are the clearest part of the All promise.
- Three-video limit: YouTube’s current operational guidance says a channel can send a maximum of three video notifications in a 24-hour period. If a channel has already reached that limit, another video notification may not be sent during the same period.
- Inactive subscribers: In an April 21, 2026 YouTube TeamYouTube announcement, YouTube said inactive subscribers who selected All may stop receiving push notifications. The notification can still be available in the YouTube Inbox, and subscribers can still watch the creator’s content in the Subscriptions feed.
- Account settings: A disabled YouTube notification category, a signed-out session, or a preference changed on another account can prevent delivery.
- Device permissions: Your operating system can block YouTube’s app notifications, suppress banners, or restrict alerts through device-level settings.
- Made for Kids channels: YouTube says these channels do not provide subscriber notifications, and the bell setting cannot be changed for them. Selecting a different bell option is not available in that case.
These limitations are why “All” should be understood as the broadest eligible preference, not as a promise that every upload will appear instantly on your lock screen.
Why didn’t I get a YouTube notification?
Work through the possibilities in order rather than assuming the creator did not upload.
1. Verify the channel bell
Open the channel and confirm that you are still subscribed and that the bell shows All. If you recently unsubscribed and resubscribed, YouTube may have reset the preference to Personalized or None.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
2. Check YouTube’s account notification controls
Review the notification settings for the signed-in YouTube account. A channel-level All selection cannot override an account-level setting that disables YouTube notifications.
3. Check the operating system
On a phone or tablet, make sure the YouTube app is allowed to send notifications. Look for blocked alerts, disabled banners, muted sounds, focus or do-not-disturb modes, and any battery or background restrictions that prevent the app from presenting alerts. On a computer, check browser or system notification permissions if you expect desktop alerts.
4. Look in the YouTube Inbox
The April 21, 2026 YouTube announcement specifically says an inactive subscriber may stop receiving a push notification while the notification remains available in the YouTube Inbox. Check there before concluding that YouTube did not record the activity.

5. Check the Subscriptions feed
Open the Subscriptions tab and look for the channel’s recent uploads. YouTube identifies this feed as the place for recently uploaded videos from your subscriptions, so it is the most useful fallback when a push alert is absent.

If the upload is a Short, some notification delivery may still be personalized. If the channel has already sent three video notifications in the preceding 24 hours, the channel limit may explain the missing alert.
7. Check whether the channel is Made for Kids
Subscriber notifications are unavailable for Made-for-Kids channels. In that situation, no bell setting can create a subscriber push alert; use the channel page and Subscriptions feed instead.
How reliable is the Subscriptions feed?
The feed is the safer routine for a viewer who cares about not missing a return. YouTube Help says the Subscriptions feed, available on mobile and computer, shows recently uploaded videos from your subscriptions. It requires you to open YouTube, but it does not depend on a banner reaching your phone at the exact time of publication.
The feed is not the same as a notification inbox. It is a viewing list for channels you follow, while notifications can include alerts and recommendations. For a comeback check, that narrower purpose is an advantage: open the feed and review the recent uploads from subscribed channels.
A practical routine is to leave All enabled for prompting, then check the Subscriptions tab whenever you open YouTube or at intervals that fit the creator’s usual schedule. After months of inactivity, make a deliberate check rather than waiting for a push alert. YouTube’s April 2026 policy change makes that especially important for subscribers whose accounts may be considered inactive.
What if I want fewer alerts?
Choose Personalized if reducing notification volume is more important than receiving the broadest possible coverage. YouTube uses signals such as your watch history, how often you watch the channel, a video’s popularity, and how often you open notifications to filter those alerts.
Personalized can be appropriate for a channel that uploads frequently or for an account that follows many creators. The trade-off is that the setting may not alert you to every eligible comeback upload. If one particular return matters, use All for that channel and keep other channels on a quieter preference if needed.
You can also rely more heavily on the Subscriptions feed and less on push banners. That approach reduces interruptions without removing the subscription itself. It does require a habit: the feed only helps when you open it.

| Question | Subscriptions feed | Notifications |
|---|---|---|
| What does it do? | Lists recently uploaded videos from channels you subscribe to. | Alerts you about eligible channel activity and other YouTube events. |
| When do you see it? | When you open the Subscriptions tab. | When YouTube delivers an alert to mobile, web, or Inbox. |
| How dependable is it? | A reliable review habit for recent uploads, provided you check it. | Subject to personalization, limits, inactivity policies, and account or device settings. |
| How much noise does it create? | Usually none until you choose to browse. | All can be frequent; Personalized reduces volume. |
| Best comeback use | Verify whether the creator has posted. | Prompt you soon after an eligible upload or live stream. |
For most viewers, the best answer is not “feed versus bell.” It is “bell for timing, feed for certainty.”

Can a comeback reach me without a push notification?
Yes. Notifications are only one traffic source for a YouTube video. YouTube also identifies Home, Up next, search, external sources, and the Subscriptions feed as routes through which viewers can find content.
A creator’s return may therefore appear in your feed even if your phone never displays a banner. You might also find it through a search, a recommendation, a link shared outside YouTube, or the creator’s channel page. If you are monitoring a comeback closely, use the feed as your intentional check and treat other discovery routes as additional opportunities rather than guarantees.
How many channels should I subscribe to?
YouTube Help recommends keeping subscriptions to 5,000 channels or fewer for the best feed and channel-list experience. This is guidance for managing the experience, not a requirement for subscribing to a channel or changing its notification bell.

If your subscriptions are numerous, the feed may require more deliberate scanning. You can make the comeback channel easier to notice by checking the feed regularly and keeping All reserved for creators whose returns matter most. The 5,000-channel guidance does not remove the need to verify individual bell settings.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A dependable comeback checklist
- Find the creator’s official channel and select Subscribe.
- Open the bell and select All notifications.
- Confirm that your YouTube account allows notifications.
- Confirm that your phone, tablet, browser, or computer allows YouTube alerts.
- Remember that Shorts may still receive personalized treatment.
- Remember that a channel can send no more than three video notifications in a 24-hour period under YouTube’s current guidance.
- After a long inactive period, check the YouTube Inbox as well as push alerts.
- Open the Subscriptions feed to verify recent uploads.
- If the channel is Made for Kids, rely on the channel page and feed because subscriber notifications are unavailable.
This checklist addresses both sides of the problem: getting a prompt when YouTube can deliver one and maintaining a reliable way to confirm that the creator has returned.
Bottom line
Subscribe to the creator, set the bell to All notifications, and make the Subscriptions feed your dependable comeback check. All is the strongest alert preference for eligible long-form uploads and live streams, but it cannot override personalization rules for some Shorts, the three-video daily channel limit, inactivity policies, Made-for-Kids restrictions, or account and device settings. The feed requires a manual visit, yet it remains the safest way to verify that a subscribed creator has posted.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a limit to how many YouTube channels I can subscribe to?
YouTube Help recommends keeping subscriptions to 5,000 channels or fewer for the best feed and channel-list experience. That is a recommendation for the experience, not a requirement for setting a channel’s notification bell.
Should I choose All or Personalized for a creator who is coming back?
Choose All when catching the return matters more than reducing alerts. Personalized is quieter and filtered using signals such as your watch history, how often you watch the channel, video popularity, and how often you open notifications, so it may not alert you to every eligible upload.
Can a creator’s comeback reach subscribers without a push notification?
Yes. YouTube identifies Home, Up next, search, external sources, and the Subscriptions feed as sources of video views in addition to notifications. A push alert is only one route by which a viewer may find an upload.

Why might a creator’s return not trigger a push alert even when I selected All?
YouTube’s April 21, 2026 announcement says inactive subscribers may stop receiving push notifications even if they selected All. YouTube says the notification may remain available in the YouTube Inbox, and the creator’s content remains accessible in the Subscriptions feed.
Does All notify me about every Short?
Not necessarily. YouTube says All notifications cover long-form uploads and live streams, while some Shorts notifications may still be personalized.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat is the three-notification rule on YouTube?
YouTube’s current operational guidance says a channel can send a maximum of three video notifications in a 24-hour period. A later upload during that period may not generate another video alert.
What should I check if YouTube notifications are missing?
Verify the channel is still subscribed and set to All, then check YouTube’s account notification settings and your operating system or browser permission for YouTube alerts. Also check the YouTube Inbox, the Subscriptions feed, the video type, the three-video limit, and whether the channel is Made for Kids.
Can I receive subscriber notifications from a Made-for-Kids channel?
No. YouTube says Made-for-Kids channels do not provide subscriber notifications, and the channel bell setting cannot be changed for them. Check the channel page and Subscriptions feed instead.
If I unsubscribe and resubscribe, will All stay enabled?
Not necessarily. YouTube says the notification preference resets to Personalized or None when you unsubscribe, so check the bell again after subscribing again.
Is the Subscriptions feed available on both phone and computer?
Yes. YouTube Help describes the Subscriptions feed as available on mobile and computer and says it shows recently uploaded videos from your subscriptions.
Can I follow a comeback without turning on notifications?
Yes. Subscribing alone places new videos from the channel in your Subscriptions feed. You will need to open that feed yourself because there may be no alert for every upload.
Why use the feed if I already selected All?
All is an alert preference, not a delivery guarantee. The feed gives you a deliberate way to review recent uploads when a push alert is filtered, capped, blocked by device settings, withheld for an inactive subscriber, or unavailable for a Made-for-Kids channel.
The Bottom Line
Best setup: subscribe, select All notifications, and check the Subscriptions feed. Use the bell for a prompt and the feed to confirm the creator’s comeback.
