To capture a website screenshot in a Node.js AWS Lambda function, package a Lambda-compatible Chromium binary with puppeteer-core (or use a Playwright build), launch it with the binary’s supplied arguments and executable path, navigate to a validated HTTP(S) URL with an explicit timeout, then call page.screenshot(). Return the image only when it fits Lambda’s 6 MB synchronous response limit; otherwise upload the byte buffer to Amazon S3. The browser binary, package size, cold starts, URL security and rendering waits are the Lambda-specific work—taking the screenshot itself is a single API call.
What is the reliable Lambda architecture for website screenshots?
Use a small Lambda handler around a compatible headless Chromium build. The handler should validate the incoming URL, launch one browser per execution environment (or per invocation when isolation requires it), create a page, set an intentional viewport, navigate with a chosen waitUntil condition and timeout, capture PNG or JPEG bytes, and finally close the page. A direct response is convenient for small files; S3 is the safer destination for larger images, metadata, retries and downstream processing.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchespuppeteer-core deliberately does not download Chromium. Pair it with a Lambda-ready package such as @sparticuz/chromium, and keep the Chromium and Puppeteer versions aligned. Playwright is a valid alternative when your deployment supplies a matching browser and its required dependencies.
What do I need before deploying?
- An AWS Lambda Node.js runtime and an execution role with only the permissions the function needs.
- A Lambda-compatible Chromium build and either
puppeteer-coreorplaywright-core. The browser build must match the function’s CPU architecture and the automation library’s supported browser revision. - A deployment method: ZIP plus layer, or a Lambda container image. Keep the browser binary out of your application logic so it can be updated independently.
- Network access to the target sites. A function placed in a private VPC needs a working egress path to public websites; without it, navigation will time out.
- A decision about output: an inline base64 response for small images, or S3 for durable storage and larger captures.
Lambda’s combined ZIP package and layers must be no larger than 250 MB unzipped. The synchronous invocation request and response payload limit is 6 MB. Lambda’s configurable /tmp area ranges from 512 MB to 10,240 MB, but that storage is temporary and should not be treated as a permanent image store.

How do I implement the screenshot handler with Puppeteer?
The following handler uses the query-string form ?url=https://example.com and also accepts an event field named url. It rejects non-HTTP protocols, reuses the browser between warm invocations, waits up to 30 seconds for navigation, and returns a PNG as a base64-encoded Lambda response.
1. Validate the URL before launching a browser
Construct a URL object so malformed input fails early. Accept only http: and https:; schemes such as file:, data: and javascript: are not appropriate for a public screenshot endpoint. If callers can submit arbitrary hosts, add an allowlist or SSRF defenses that reject loopback, link-local, private-network, metadata-service and internal-DNS destinations before navigation.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
2. Launch the supplied Chromium binary
Use the Chromium package’s args, headless setting and asynchronous executablePath(). Do not hard-code a local workstation path: the executable location is different in a Lambda ZIP, layer and container image.
3. Navigate, capture and close the page
networkidle2 waits until network activity has quieted, which is useful for many client-rendered pages. It can be a poor fit for pages with analytics, WebSockets or other long-lived connections, so use domcontentloaded, load, a selector wait or an application-ready signal when that better represents “ready” for your site. Always close the page in a finally block.
import chromium from '@sparticuz/chromium';
import puppeteer from 'puppeteer-core';
let browserPromise;
export const handler = async (event) => {
const rawUrl = event?.queryStringParameters?.url || event?.url;
const url = new URL(rawUrl);
if (!['http:', 'https:'].includes(url.protocol)) {
throw new Error('Only HTTP(S) URLs are allowed');
}
const browser = await (browserPromise ||= puppeteer.launch({
args: chromium.args,
executablePath: await chromium.executablePath(),
headless: chromium.headless,
}));
const page = await browser.newPage();
try {
await page.setViewport({ width: 1365, height: 768, deviceScaleFactor: 1 });
const response = await page.goto(url.href, {
waitUntil: 'networkidle2',
timeout: 30000,
});
const png = await page.screenshot({ type: 'png' });
return {
statusCode: 200,
headers: {
'content-type': 'image/png',
'cache-control': 'no-store',
},
isBase64Encoded: true,
body: Buffer.from(png).toString('base64'),
};
} finally {
await page.close();
}
};
The response object is useful for logging or policy checks even though navigation itself can complete for an HTTP 404 or 500. Check response.status() when a successful page status matters to your application; a completed navigation is not proof that the target returned a healthy page.

How do I save a Lambda screenshot to Amazon S3?
Upload the screenshot buffer directly; a durable local file is unnecessary. The function role needs the narrowest possible s3:PutObject permission for the destination prefix. Store a content type and, where appropriate, encryption settings. S3 avoids the 6 MB synchronous response ceiling and lets another process deliver the image, create a signed download URL or run additional analysis.
import chromium from '@sparticuz/chromium';
import puppeteer from 'puppeteer-core';
import { S3Client, PutObjectCommand } from '@aws-sdk/client-s3';
const s3 = new S3Client({});
let browserPromise;
export const handler = async (event) => {
const rawUrl = event?.queryStringParameters?.url || event?.url;
const url = new URL(rawUrl);
if (!['http:', 'https:'].includes(url.protocol)) {
throw new Error('Only HTTP(S) URLs are allowed');
}
const browser = await (browserPromise ||= puppeteer.launch({
args: chromium.args,
executablePath: await chromium.executablePath(),
headless: chromium.headless,
}));
const page = await browser.newPage();
try {
await page.goto(url.href, { waitUntil: 'networkidle2', timeout: 30000 });
const image = await page.screenshot({ type: 'png', fullPage: true });
const key = `screenshots/${Date.now()}.png`;
await s3.send(new PutObjectCommand({
Bucket: process.env.SCREENSHOT_BUCKET,
Key: key,
Body: image,
ContentType: 'image/png',
}));
return {
statusCode: 202,
headers: { 'content-type': 'application/json' },
body: JSON.stringify({ bucket: process.env.SCREENSHOT_BUCKET, key }),
};
} finally {
await page.close();
}
};
Use a deterministic key or an idempotency token if retries must not create duplicates. Keep the bucket private by default and grant readers a short-lived signed URL rather than making the entire bucket public.
Which Lambda deployment option should I choose?
| Approach | Best fit | Operational trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| ZIP plus Lambda layer | Small application code with Chromium maintained separately | The combined unzipped package and layers must fit Lambda’s 250 MB limit; layer and application versions must stay compatible. |
| Container image | Browser dependencies that make a ZIP or layer awkward | The image carries Node.js, the automation library and Chromium together, so image publishing and security updates become part of release management. |
| Playwright layer | Teams that prefer Playwright’s API and selectors | The layer must expose a matching playwright-core package and Chromium binary; return handling and limits are the same Lambda concerns. |
| Remote screenshot API | Functions where shipping and maintaining Chromium is undesirable | Adds an external dependency, credentials, network latency, transfer cost and a decision about whether the target URL or page content may leave your AWS account. |
Compare the choices on package size, cold-start impact, browser-version maintenance, CPU architecture, memory pressure, output size, concurrency behavior, S3 durability and operational ownership. Do not rely on a universal cold-start figure: browser startup varies with package format, memory, architecture, page complexity and whether the execution environment is warm.

Choose the readiness condition deliberately
Puppeteer’s default navigation timeout is 30 seconds. Set it explicitly so a slow target cannot consume the entire function duration. domcontentloaded is quick but may precede images and client rendering; load waits for load-event resources; networkidle2 waits for a quieter network and can hang on long-lived connections. A reliable production flow often combines a short navigation condition with waitForSelector for the application’s own ready marker.
Control the viewport and fonts
Set width, height and device scale factor before navigation when screenshots are compared pixel-for-pixel. The output also depends on the fonts available in the Lambda image. If a page uses a web font, wait for document.fonts.ready or a page-specific signal; if it requires a private font, include that font in the deployment image under the applicable license.

Account for lazy content and overlays
Full-page capture does not guarantee that every lazy image has loaded. Scroll through the document, wait for image completion or use the site’s own “ready” event before capturing. Cookie notices, chat launchers and newsletter modals can obscure content; remove them with page-side code only when you own the page or have permission, and avoid using screenshot automation to bypass access controls.
Set function-level limits
Give the Lambda timeout enough headroom for browser startup, navigation, rendering and S3 upload, while still bounding cost and stuck pages. A browser-level timeout, navigation timeout and any selector timeout should all be shorter than the function’s hard limit so your code can log a useful error and clean up.

What security controls does a public URL-to-screenshot endpoint need?
- SSRF protection: Resolve and inspect the destination before navigation. Block loopback, link-local, private and metadata-service addresses, and consider an explicit hostname allowlist for internal applications.
- Authentication and authorization: Require an API authorizer or signed request. Never expose an unauthenticated endpoint that lets anyone spend your Lambda, browser or S3 budget.
- Rate and concurrency limits: Apply per-user quotas, reserved concurrency and request-size limits. A single caller can otherwise create a browser storm.
- Timeouts and cancellation: Bound navigation, selector waits, uploads and the overall invocation. Abort work that exceeds the request’s deadline.
- Secret handling: Keep API keys, cookies and authorization headers in a secrets manager or encrypted environment configuration. Do not print them in logs.
- Least-privilege storage: Grant only the S3 object actions and prefix the function needs. Encrypt objects according to your application’s requirements.
- Safe logging: Record a request id, hostname, HTTP status, elapsed time and output byte count. Redact query strings when they may contain tokens or personal data.
Browser automation can execute untrusted page JavaScript. Treat the browser as a boundary: do not grant it credentials that are unrelated to the target, and do not allow a user-controlled URL to select arbitrary request headers or cookies without an explicit policy.
How do I make the function reliable under concurrency?
A module-level browser promise can be reused by warm invocations, reducing repeated startup. Each invocation should still create and close its own page. If your workload needs strict isolation, launch a browser per invocation and accept the additional startup cost. Test the chosen model with the function’s configured concurrency because a single browser process may become memory-bound when many pages render simultaneously.
Log elapsed milliseconds around launch, navigation, screenshot and S3 upload. Distinguish browser-launch failures, navigation timeouts, selector timeouts, HTTP error statuses and upload failures so retries can target the right layer. For transient targets, retry at the job level with a bounded count and an idempotency key; do not blindly retry malformed URLs or blocked hosts.
Use S3 or an asynchronous queue when captures can exceed the synchronous 6 MB response limit, when callers do not need to hold an HTTP connection, or when you need durable retry and audit behavior. Keep the returned object key and a status record so clients can poll or receive a completion notification.

Why does Puppeteer work locally but fail in Lambda?
“Could not find Chrome” or an executable-path error
puppeteer-core does not download a browser. Add a Lambda-compatible Chromium package or layer, call its executablePath(), and verify that the browser revision matches the Puppeteer version. A local Chrome path is not present in the Lambda runtime.
Package exceeds the deployment limit
Check the unzipped size of the function and every layer together. Move Chromium to a layer, remove development dependencies, or switch to a container image. The hard ZIP-plus-layer ceiling is 250 MB unzipped.
Navigation times out
Confirm that the function has outbound network access, especially when running inside a VPC. Then test DNS, reduce the page’s required work, choose a less strict waitUntil condition, and add a selector wait for the actual ready state. Do not simply increase the timeout without checking for blocked egress or an endless connection.
The response is too large
PNG, full-page and high-device-scale captures can exceed Lambda’s 6 MB synchronous response limit. Use JPEG where quality permits, reduce the viewport or scale, or upload the bytes to S3 and return an object key.
The screenshot is blank or missing content
Capture after the page’s data and fonts are ready, not immediately after the first DOM event. Check that the selected viewport is not triggering an unexpected responsive layout, that lazy images were activated, and that the page did not return an authentication or bot-check screen. Inspect the HTTP status and save diagnostic HTML or a small debug screenshot in a protected location.
HTTP 404 or 500 appears as a successful invocation
Puppeteer can finish navigation for a valid HTTP error response. Read response.status(), decide whether that status should fail the job, and return an application-level error while still closing the page.
Best Value
Pages fail only under parallel load
Measure memory and CPU at the configured concurrency. Reduce simultaneous pages, reserve a lower concurrency, increase function memory, or use a queue. Reusing a browser does not mean one page can safely be shared by unrelated requests.
Or skip the browser setup
If you do not want to package and maintain Chromium in Lambda, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API at https://screenshotneo.com. Cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups and chat widgets are removed before the shot. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads and timeouts are not billed, and each response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf to Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients.
Call the API from a small Lambda function or another worker. The complete examples below use the documented endpoint and parameter names.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
See the full parameter list and response behavior in the ScreenshotNeo documentation. Every feature is included on every plan; 1,000 screenshots per month are free with no card, and paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account to try the API.
What should I check before production?
- Confirm the Chromium executable runs in the deployed architecture and that the automation library and browser revisions align.
- Exercise a fast static page, a client-rendered page, a slow page, a 404 and a page with a long-lived connection.
- Verify viewport, fonts, lazy images, full-page height and JPEG/PNG output against known references.
- Test direct responses near the 6 MB boundary and an S3 path for larger captures.
- Run malformed-URL, private-address, authentication, rate-limit and timeout tests before exposing the endpoint.
- Watch launch time, navigation time, memory, output bytes, HTTP status, S3 errors and retry counts in observability tooling.
- Set a retention policy for S3 objects and avoid logging page contents or credentials.
The core decision is straightforward: self-host Chromium when you need in-account rendering control and can operate the browser package; use a remote API when eliminating browser packaging and maintenance is more valuable than the added service dependency. In either case, explicit readiness checks, SSRF defenses, bounded timeouts and an output path that respects Lambda’s payload limit determine whether the screenshot service is dependable.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a Lambda screenshot function capture pages that require login?
Yes, if the application is authorized to access them. Supply session cookies or authorization headers through a protected configuration path, keep those secrets out of logs, and ensure the target’s terms and security policy permit automated capture.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →How can I compare screenshots for visual regression tests?
Keep the viewport, device scale factor, locale, timezone and fonts fixed, then wait for a deterministic application-ready marker. Store a content hash and the rendering metadata with each image so a later difference can be traced to an environment change rather than a page change.
Should I use a Lambda layer or a container image for Chromium?
A layer keeps browser code separate and reusable when the unzipped package fits the 250 MB ceiling. A container image is usually easier to reason about when native libraries, fonts and browser files make ZIP assembly fragile, but it adds image build and patching work.
How do I prevent screenshots from exposing private data?
Restrict who can submit URLs, block internal address ranges, encrypt S3 objects and apply short retention. Review query strings, page content and generated object names for personal or credential-bearing data before sending them to logs or downstream systems.
