Use a state-aware browser capture, not an ordinary viewport screenshot. First set and record the cosmological parameters, pause or wait for the animation to settle, and make sure the canvas, legends and controls have rendered. Then identify whether the document or an inner panel is actually scrolling. For a one-off capture, Firefox Developer Tools can take a full-page or selected-element screenshot. For repeatable PNG and PDF output, Playwright is the most complete workflow; Puppeteer is a practical Chrome-automation alternative. Always inspect the resulting files for clipped canvases, missing lazy content, sticky controls and awkward PDF page breaks.
This guide shows each method, including inner-scroll handling, device-pixel-ratio control, metadata recording, troubleshooting and a no-browser API option.
What does “full-page” mean for an interactive cosmology simulation?
A full-page screenshot includes the entire scrollable document, not merely the pixels visible in the current viewport. That distinction matters because a simulation may put the canvas, parameter controls, explanatory text and legends below the fold. A canvas can also live inside its own scrolling element while the outer page barely moves.

Before capturing, decide what the record must contain:
- Viewport capture: only the currently visible frame. Use it when you are documenting one moment of an animation or a compact dashboard.
- Full-document capture: the whole page scroll range. Use it when content below the fold is part of the result.
- Element capture: one canvas or panel. Use it when surrounding navigation is irrelevant, or when the simulation is an inner scroller.
- PDF export: a paginated document. Text may remain selectable, while canvas graphics are normally rasterized into the page.
Full-page does not automatically mean “all pixels inside every nested panel.” You must expose or capture an inner scroller separately when the simulation uses one.

How should I stabilize and record the simulation before capturing it?
Reproducibility starts before the screenshot command. A changing simulation can produce a technically complete image that no one can reproduce.
- Set the scenario. Enter the cosmological parameters, choose the redshift, matter or dark-energy values, initial conditions, or other controls relevant to your experiment.
- Choose a time state. Start the animation and wait for the desired epoch, or pause it. If the application has a “ready,” “loaded,” or “rendered” indicator, use that state rather than guessing with a short delay.
- Wait for visual completion. Confirm that the canvas, axes, legends, labels, tooltips and control panels have appeared. Lazy-loaded images and fonts can otherwise arrive after the capture.
- Fix the rendering environment. Record browser and version, viewport width and height, device-pixel ratio, operating system, zoom level, color scheme and whether the page was headless.
- Record provenance. Save the exact URL, parameter values, capture time (with time zone), tool version and output filename beside the image or PDF.
- Remove transient overlays. Close cookie notices, chat bubbles, tutorials and hover tooltips unless they are part of what you are documenting.
A useful filename is lcdm-z1.0-dpr2-2026-10-26T1430Z.png, accompanied by a small text or JSON record containing the URL and parameters. This prevents a later reader from confusing two visually similar but physically different scenarios.
How do I determine which element actually scrolls?
Scroll the page manually and watch the scrollbar thumb. If the outer page moves but the canvas remains fixed, the page is the scroller. If a panel’s own scrollbar moves while the page stays in place, that panel is the scroller.
Signs of an inner scroll container
- The canvas is inside a fixed-height card with
overflow: autooroverflow: scroll. - Only a narrow panel scrollbar changes when you use the wheel over the simulation.
- A full-page screenshot contains the panel’s first frame but omits content revealed by scrolling inside it.
- The application uses a virtualized list or a canvas wrapper whose height is smaller than its logical content.
Capture the outer page and the inner panel separately when necessary. For an inner panel, either temporarily expand its height in an automated script, scroll and stitch logical sections, or use a capture tool that can unroll the panel. Do not assume that a page-level fullPage option will discover nested scroll ranges.
How can I take a one-off full-page screenshot in Firefox?
Firefox Developer Tools provide a no-code route with full-page, selector, delay and device-pixel-ratio controls. This is convenient when you need one or two captures and do not want to maintain a script.
- Open the simulation in Firefox and set the parameters and animation state.
- Open Developer Tools with
F12(orCtrl+Shift+I/Cmd+Option+I). - Open the Developer Tools command line with
Shift+F2if your Firefox version exposes it, or use the command-search interface. - Run a full-page capture with a settling delay and a chosen device scale:

The --delay value is only a settling aid; a page-specific readiness signal is more reliable. Increase --dpr when labels are too soft, but remember that doubling each dimension can quadruple the pixel count and file size.
How do I automate repeatable PNG and PDF captures with Playwright?
Playwright is the best fit when you need the same scenario captured repeatedly, in both image and PDF form. Its full-page screenshot means the complete scrollable page, as if it were displayed on a very tall screen. Use a readiness condition tied to the simulation rather than an arbitrary sleep.

await browser.close();The script fixes the viewport and device scale, waits for network quiescence and a non-empty canvas, then writes both files. If the simulation continues animating, pause it through the UI before the screenshot or call the application’s own pause control in the script. A blind delay can be added as a last resort, but it is less reliable than a state signal.

For quick command-line work, the CLI supports full-page screenshots and PDF output:

Capture an inner scrolling panel
Playwright’s page-level fullPage: true follows the document’s scrollable height. For a panel, locate it explicitly. If its content can safely be expanded, temporarily remove the height constraint, capture, then restore the style:

In that case, capture logical sections at fixed scroll positions and label each file with its parameter range, or use a tool that unrolls the panel without changing its layout.

If controls are inside an iframe, target the corresponding frame. If they are shadow-DOM elements, use locators that pierce the component boundary or evaluate against the shadow root.
How can I generate a PDF without losing the simulation state?
Use the same stabilized page as the PNG capture, then export with print-background enabled and explicit paper settings. PDF pagination is a layout operation, not a larger screenshot: a tall canvas may be split across pages, and CSS print rules can hide or reposition controls.

- Choose paper size, margins and orientation deliberately. Landscape often suits a wide phase-space plot.
- Set
printBackground: truewhen colored axes, dark themes or shaded regions carry meaning. - Inspect page breaks around legends, captions and sticky controls. A sticky header can repeat or cover content when printed.
- Open the PDF in a viewer and check whether text is selectable and whether the canvas is rasterized at an acceptable resolution.
- For a single very tall graphic, consider a large logical section or several labeled pages instead of forcing an unreadably narrow page.
Playwright’s PDF export is available through Chromium. If your production browser is Firefox, validate the final PDF in Chromium as well, because print engines can paginate the same DOM differently.

When is Puppeteer a better choice?
Puppeteer is a strong alternative when your project already uses Chrome DevTools Protocol automation or has an existing Puppeteer test harness. It can interact with complex interfaces, take screenshots and generate PDFs.

What commonly goes wrong, and how do I fix it?
The screenshot stops at the viewport
Cause: the command made a normal viewport capture, or the page has no document-level overflow. Fix: use Playwright fullPage: true, the CLI’s --full-page, or Firefox’s --fullpage. If only a panel scrolls, capture or expand that element separately.
The bottom of the canvas or legend is missing
Cause: a fixed-height canvas wrapper, clipping CSS or an inner scrollbar. Fix: inspect the wrapper, capture the element, or temporarily expand the panel. Verify that expansion does not resize the scientific plot.
The image shows a blank canvas
Cause: WebGL or canvas rendering had not completed, a required script failed, or the capture ran before the scenario was applied. Fix: wait for a real canvas dimension or application-ready signal, check browser console errors, confirm network requests completed and pause only after the new parameters are visible.

Controls or labels are absent
Cause: lazy rendering, a responsive breakpoint or a print stylesheet. Fix: use a stable viewport, wait for the controls’ selectors, disable animations, and inspect the page and PDF separately. A PDF may intentionally hide navigation through print CSS.
The capture contains a cookie banner, chat bubble or newsletter popup
Cause: the overlay appeared after navigation or was outside the element you intended to capture. Fix: accept or close it before capture, hide its selector in automation, or use a service that handles common consent and popup platforms before rendering.
The PDF has bad page breaks
Cause: print layout differs from screen layout, margins are too small, or a tall canvas is being paginated. Fix: set paper size, orientation and margins explicitly; add print-specific CSS where you control the app; and inspect every page. Split very tall outputs into labeled sections when a single page is unreadable.
The output is too large or fails on a very long page
Cause: browser and canvas implementations impose practical maximum dimensions, and high device scale multiplies the pixel count. Fix: reduce DPR, capture logical sections, or export a paginated PDF. Keep the original parameter record so the sections can be interpreted together.
Fonts or images differ between runs
Cause: web fonts or lazy images were still loading, or the browser environment changed. Fix: wait for the relevant selectors, use a fixed browser version and viewport, and record the environment with the capture. Network-idle alone may not mean a font has been applied.
How should I validate and archive the files?
Validation is part of capture, not an optional cosmetic step.
- Open the PNG at 100% and inspect the first and last content, axes, legends, labels, color scales, controls and any sticky elements.
- Scroll through the source page and compare every logical section with the image.
- Open the PDF and check page count, orientation, margins, page breaks, selectable text and canvas sharpness.
- Confirm that the recorded URL, parameter values, browser, viewport, DPR and timestamp match the file.
- For a repeated run, compare a fixed reference region or image hash, while allowing for intentional animation or font-rendering differences.
Keep the original URL and parameter record with the outputs. A screenshot without its cosmological state is difficult to audit, even when every pixel is present.

What is the practical recommendation?
For a single, manually prepared cosmology state, Firefox’s full-page or selector capture is enough. For a reproducible archive that must produce both PNG and PDF, use Playwright with an explicit readiness condition, fixed viewport and device scale, and a separate strategy for inner scroll containers. Use Puppeteer when your project already depends on Chrome DevTools Protocol automation. Whichever route you choose, inspect the outputs and preserve the simulation metadata.

Can I capture a WebGL cosmology simulation if the canvas is cross-origin?
Yes, a browser automation tool can usually capture what the browser visibly renders even when the canvas is backed by cross-origin resources. Reading pixels inside page JavaScript may be blocked by canvas tainting, so prefer the browser’s screenshot operation rather than exporting pixels from the canvas yourself.
How do I make two captures comparable across different computers?

Why does my PDF show a different layout from the PNG?

What should I do when the simulation has no ready indicator?
