On a PlayStation 5, press the DualSense controller’s Create button and choose Take Screenshot. Your image is saved in Media Gallery, where you can crop, rotate, frame, add text, share it directly, or copy it to compatible USB storage. For montages, filters, stickers, effects, and music, use Share Factory Studio instead of the quick editor. The exact capture settings and some sharing behavior can change with PS5 system software or region, so use the labels shown on your console.
How do I take a screenshot on PS5?
Open the Create menu with the DualSense controller’s Create button, then select Take Screenshot. The console saves a still image that you can later find in Media Gallery.

- Press the Create button while the game or screen you want to capture is visible.
- Select Take Screenshot. Do not choose Save Recent Gameplay or Start New Recording; those options are for video.
- Wait for the capture confirmation, then continue playing or press the Create button again for another image.
The Create menu also exposes capture settings. Depending on the current PS5 software, you may be able to choose image format and resolution and adjust available audio options for captures. Review those settings before an important session, especially if you need a particular file type or image size for another device.
When should I use the other Create-menu options?
- Take Screenshot: saves one still image immediately.
- Save Recent Gameplay: preserves gameplay that has already occurred as a video clip.
- Start New Recording: begins a new video recording.
Keeping the three choices distinct prevents a common mistake: opening a video workflow when the goal is a single, shareable picture.

Where are my PS5 screenshots?
Open Media Gallery from the games home screen. PlayStation describes Media Gallery as the place to “view and manage all your screenshots and video clips.”
- Go to the PS5 games home.
- Open Media Gallery.
- For a new capture, select the Recently created card.
- Choose the screenshot to view it full size or open its available actions.
The Recently created card can show up to 15 recent captures. If an older image is not there, browse the rest of Media Gallery rather than taking the screenshot again; the recent card is a shortcut, not the entire library.

What can I do from Media Gallery?
Media Gallery is the central point for opening, editing, sharing, and exporting captures. Selecting an image reveals actions such as Edit, Share, and More. A connected USB device can also expose a USB tab for viewing supported images and videos.
How do I edit a screenshot on PS5?
For a quick cleanup, open the image in Media Gallery and choose Edit. The built-in editor provides crop, rotate, frame, and text tools, so you can make a presentable image without moving it to another device.
- In Media Gallery, select the screenshot.
- Choose Edit.
- Use Crop to remove unwanted edges or focus attention on the subject.
- Use Rotate if the image orientation needs correcting.
- Choose a Frame when a bordered presentation suits the image.
- Select the text tool to add a caption, label, or other short annotation.
- Review the result and save it using the on-screen confirmation.
What is the built-in editor best for?
- Removing empty or distracting areas around a subject.
- Correcting orientation before sharing.
- Adding a short explanation, title, or callout.
- Giving a single screenshot a simple framed presentation.
These tools are deliberately quick. They are suitable for one-off posts and messages, but they are not a full montage editor. If you need multiple images, decorative stickers, filters, music, or layered effects, move to Share Factory Studio.
When should I use Share Factory Studio instead of Media Gallery?
Use Media Gallery for a fast edit to one screenshot; use Share Factory Studio for a more designed project. Sony describes its photo editor as supporting montages with text, filters, and stickers, alongside Bits and a video editor. It can also add effects and music to projects.

Choose Media Gallery when you need:
- A crop, rotation, frame, or small amount of text.
- The shortest path from capture to sharing.
- One image prepared directly on the console.
Choose Share Factory Studio when you need:
- A montage made from several screenshots.
- Filters or stickers beyond the basic frame and text tools.
- Effects or music in a more elaborate project.
- A workflow that combines photo and video editing features.
Open the current Share Factory Studio listing on your PS5 or find it through PlayStation Store if it is not already installed. The app’s availability and installation state can vary by console configuration, so follow the listing and the labels currently shown on your system rather than relying on an old menu layout.
A practical two-stage workflow
- Capture the still with the Create button.
- Open it in Media Gallery and decide whether a quick edit is enough.
- For a montage or effects-heavy project, open Share Factory Studio and import the screenshots you want to use.
- Apply text, filters, stickers, effects, or music as needed.
- Use the project’s available export or sharing action when the composition is ready.
How do I share PS5 screenshots?
In Media Gallery, select a screenshot, choose Share, pick a recipient or supported destination, and send it. Sony’s support instructions allow up to four screenshots in one share operation.
- Open Media Gallery and select the image you want to send.
- Choose Share.
- Select the recipient or destination offered by the console.
- If you want to send several stills together, select up to four screenshots when the multi-select screen appears.
- Confirm the message or destination and send.
Sharing is designed for sending a capture to someone or to a supported destination. It is different from copying a file to removable storage: use the USB route when you need a local file for another device or an archive.
How do the sharing limits differ for screenshots and video?
| Capture type | Limit in Sony’s cited sharing instructions | What that means |
|---|---|---|
| Screenshots | Up to four in one share | Select several still images together, up to the stated limit. |
| Video clips | One clip per share | Send clips individually rather than grouping multiple videos in one share action. |
| Video shared with a group | Three minutes maximum | A group-bound clip must stay within that duration. |
These are procedural limits reported by PlayStation Support and can change with software or regional behavior. If the console presents a different limit, follow the current on-screen message.

Use a compatible USB flash drive or other compatible USB storage when you want the image outside the console. Media Gallery provides the copy command; Sony’s instructions do not specify a universal drive model or capacity, so check current PS5 compatibility and formatting requirements before buying or preparing storage.
- Connect the compatible USB storage device to the PS5.
- Open Media Gallery.
- Select the screenshot.
- Open More.
- Choose Copy to USB Drive and confirm the destination if prompted.
- Safely finish the operation before disconnecting the drive.
When the device is recognized, Media Gallery can show a USB tab for supported images and videos. If the tab or copy command does not appear, the console may not recognize the device as compatible, the connection may be incomplete, or the current software may present the action differently.

When is USB export better than Share?
- Use Share when a person or supported online destination is the immediate recipient.
- Use Copy to USB Drive when you need a local file on a computer or another device.
- Use USB export for a manual backup or when you want to edit with software outside the PS5.
What is the best PS5 screenshot workflow for a clean result?
A dependable workflow separates capture, selection, editing, and delivery. Decide the final destination before you start so you do not create an unnecessarily complex project or discover that you need a different export method.
| Your goal | Recommended path | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Save one unedited still | Create button → Take Screenshot → Media Gallery | Fastest route with no extra processing. |
| Remove edges or add a caption | Media Gallery → Edit | Built-in crop, rotate, frame, and text tools are sufficient. |
| Build a themed image montage | Media Gallery → Share Factory Studio | Provides montage-oriented text, filters, stickers, effects, and music. |
| Send stills to someone | Media Gallery → Share | Uses the console’s recipient or destination picker. |
| Keep a file for another device | Media Gallery → More → Copy to USB Drive | Places the capture on compatible removable storage. |
Before you capture
- Pause on the exact frame you want; a screenshot records the visible screen at the moment you select the command.
- Check the capture format and resolution options if the final destination has requirements.
- Decide whether you need a single still, a set of stills, or a video clip so you choose the correct Create-menu command.
After you capture
- Open Media Gallery promptly and verify that the image appears.
- Use the recent-captures card for a newly made image, then browse the full library for older work.
- Choose the lightest editing tool that meets the goal; reserve Share Factory Studio for projects that genuinely need its additional controls.
- Use Share for a recipient and USB copying for a file you control locally.
How do I fix common PS5 screenshot problems?
The screenshot is not in Recently created
Open the full Media Gallery library instead of relying only on the recent card, which displays at most 15 recent captures. If the image is absent from the library as well, repeat a small test capture and wait for the capture confirmation before leaving the screen.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
I selected the wrong Create-menu option
Return to the Create menu and choose Take Screenshot for a still. Save Recent Gameplay and Start New Recording create or preserve video, so they will not produce the single image you expected.
The edit controls I need are missing
Media Gallery’s editor is limited to crop, rotate, frame, and text. For filters, stickers, montages, effects, or music, open the current Share Factory Studio listing and use that editor instead.
The Share action will not include all my captures
Check whether you are selecting screenshots or video. Sony’s cited instructions permit four screenshots together but only one video clip per share, and a video sent to a group is limited to three minutes.
The USB drive does not appear
Reconnect the device, verify that it meets the PS5’s current compatibility and formatting requirements, and reopen Media Gallery. The USB tab and Copy to USB Drive action depend on the console recognizing the storage and supporting the files involved.

PlayStation can change capture settings, app placement, and sharing behavior through system software updates or regional variations. Use the current labels on your console and treat any on-screen limit or requirement as authoritative when it differs from an older instruction.
What should I remember about PS5 screenshot capture?
- The DualSense Create button is the starting point for a still capture.
- Media Gallery is where screenshots are viewed and managed.
- The built-in Edit command handles basic framing and text work.
- Share Factory Studio is the better choice for montages and richer effects.
- Share sends captures to a recipient or supported destination, while Copy to USB Drive creates a local copy outside the console.
- Sharing limits, settings, and compatibility behavior can change with PS5 software and region, so check the current console interface when a result differs.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I take screenshots while a PS5 game is running?
Yes. The Create menu is available while the game or screen you want to preserve is visible, so you do not need to leave the game first. Capture timing still matters: the image records what is displayed when you choose the still-capture command.
Why does my screenshot look different after editing?
Cropping changes which part of the original frame remains, while rotating changes its orientation and a frame adds a presentation border. If you need the untouched image, keep the original capture in Media Gallery and make edits only after checking the unmodified version.
Can I use a computer editor after copying a screenshot?
Yes. Copying the capture to compatible USB storage gives you a local file that can be transferred to another device for further work. The PS5 instructions do not define a particular computer application; choose one that supports the file format and resolution you selected.
Does Share Factory Studio replace Media Gallery?
No. Media Gallery remains the library for finding and managing captures. Share Factory Studio is an additional creative workspace for projects that need montages, filters, stickers, effects, or music.
