To stop an e-commerce membership from renewing, cancel it in the account or billing service that currently controls the subscription, before that merchant’s stated cutoff. Finish every confirmation screen, save the cancellation email or page, and verify the displayed end date. Deleting an app or removing a payment card does not, by itself, cancel auto-renewal. The deadline differs by service: Walmart+ uses the end of the current term, Instacart+ displays a billing date and may charge within 24 hours of it, Costco requires cancellation at least 72 hours before the first day of the renewal month, and Amazon requires notice before the next charge.
Cancellation, plan changes, pauses and refunds are different actions. A pause may stop billing temporarily without ending the account; a downgrade can change the next price but leave auto-renewal enabled; and a refund request does not substitute for canceling. Treat the membership page as the source of the current status, and act before the strictest deadline shown for your plan.

What should I do first to prevent the next membership charge?
Start by identifying who bills you and the next renewal date. A membership bought directly from a retailer is managed in that retailer’s account; one purchased through an app store, payment service or another partner must be canceled through that intermediary’s subscription controls or support channel. Check the merchant name on your receipt or card statement if you are unsure.
- Open the membership-management page. Look for the plan name, billing frequency, current term and next billing or renewal date. Note whether the account says “active,” “scheduled to end” or “canceled.”
- Choose the correct action. Select Cancel to end renewal, or use Change plan, Pause or Manage payment method if you want a different arrangement. A payment-method change does not turn off recurring billing.
- Complete every confirmation screen. Retailers may show discounts, reminders, surveys or retention offers. Continue until the site states that cancellation is complete; stopping at an offer does not cancel the plan.
- Save proof. Keep the final confirmation page, email, date, time and displayed membership end date. A screenshot is useful if the page later changes or the email is delayed.
- Verify later. Reopen the account and check that the plan is marked canceled or scheduled to end, then review the next payment statement. If the status still says active, repeat the process or contact the billing owner.
Do not rely on deleting the retailer’s app, logging out, or removing a card. Those actions are not the documented cancellation workflow and can leave auto-renewal active. Removing a card can also create a failed-payment dispute without proving that you canceled on time.

How do merchant-specific renewal deadlines differ?
The controlling deadline is set by each membership’s terms, not by a universal number of days. Use the date shown in your account and the service-specific rules below. Build in a personal buffer because a support queue, time-zone difference or incomplete confirmation can push you past the formal cutoff.

How do I cancel Walmart+ without losing more than expected?
For a paid Walmart+ term, cancellation prevents the next term and benefits continue through the end of the relevant term. Walmart’s terms say, “To avoid being charged for a new Walmart+ Membership term, you must cancel your membership before the end of the current membership term.” A trial behaves differently: canceling during the trial can end access immediately, and Walmart says a trial refund will not be issued.
Cancel in the account
- Sign in and open Account.
- Select Walmart+, then Manage membership.
- Select Manage beside the Walmart+ plan.
- Choose Cancel and finish all confirmation prompts.
You can also call Walmart customer care. To avoid a new charge, the cancellation must be recorded before the current term ends, not merely requested in an unfinished chat. Save the confirmation and the stated end date. If the page offers “Remind Me Later,” understand that it sends an email three days before renewal; it does not disable the renewal.
Can I change or pause Walmart+ instead?
- Monthly members can upgrade to an annual plan. The help guidance says switching from annual to monthly is not currently available.
- Eligible members can pause for one month at a time, up to three times per year. There is no billing and no Walmart+ benefit access during a pause.
- Resuming a paused membership establishes a new billing date, so record that date and decide whether you still want automatic renewal.
If you only want to avoid an immediate renewal while deciding, a pause or reminder may fit better than cancellation. If you are in a trial and want to keep access until the trial ends, check the on-screen consequence before confirming because Walmart says trial cancellation can end access immediately.
How do I cancel Amazon Prime or Prime Video, and when can I request a refund?
A direct Amazon subscription can be canceled from Your Account, through customer service, or with an available cancellation form. Amazon’s terms warn that, unless you notify Amazon before a charge that you want to cancel or do not want auto-renewal, the subscription continues and Amazon may collect the current periodic fee from a payment method on file. The terms state, “UNLESS YOU NOTIFY US BEFORE A CHARGE THAT YOU WANT TO CANCEL OR DO NOT WANT TO AUTO RENEW, YOU UNDERSTAND THAT YOUR SUBSCRIPTION WILL AUTOMATICALLY CONTINUE.”
Refund rules for direct subscriptions
- The cited Prime Video terms describe a full refund when cancellation occurs within three business days of signing up or converting from a free trial, subject to the value of service used.
- The same global terms describe a 14-day confirmation-period rule for consumers in the UK and European Union. The exact result can depend on local law and use of the service.
- Amazon UK terms say direct members may receive a full refund when no Prime benefits were used in the current period. When benefits were used, a partial refund may be available.
Do not assume that canceling ends access or guarantees a refund in every country. Read the confirmation screen for the effective date and ask customer service to state whether the request is a cancellation only, a refund request, or both. If the membership was purchased through another company, that third party’s billing and refund policy controls. Canceling inside Amazon may not end a subscription that the intermediary owns.
How do I cancel Instacart+, and what is the five-day annual refund rule?
Instacart+ renews monthly or annually until canceled and charges an active payment method. Open Your Instacart+ Membership, select Cancel Membership, choose Continue to cancel, and confirm the final step. The repeated “continue” screens matter: leaving during a retention offer or survey can leave the membership active.

Instacart shows the billing date on the membership page, but its terms allow a charge within 24 hours of that date. Cancel before that window rather than waiting for the exact displayed time. Instacart sends a cancellation email and displays the membership expiration date; retain both records. If the displayed date changes after a plan modification, use the newest date and confirmation.
When is an Instacart+ refund possible?
- An annual member may qualify for a refund only when canceling within the first five calendar days of a paid term or renewal and when no Instacart+ benefits were used.
- Monthly membership fees are non-refundable under the cited terms, but access continues through the paid term after cancellation.

You can make the change on Costco.com, at a membership counter, through Member Services by phone, or by chat. The same channels can be used to change the payment method. Changing a card is a billing update, not a cancellation, so use the auto-renewal cancellation option if your goal is to end recurring charges. Ask for a confirmation number when using phone or chat and save the transcript or email.
If the renewal month begins in less than 72 hours, submit the cancellation immediately and ask Costco whether the charge has already entered processing. A request made after the cutoff may not prevent the renewal, so keep the timestamp and ask what refund or membership-reversal options apply.

What if the membership was billed through a third party?
The billing intermediary controls the renewal, payment authorization and usually the refund process. Open that service’s subscription settings, locate the retailer membership, and complete its cancellation flow. If the retailer’s account shows no cancel control, contact the intermediary first and keep its confirmation number or email.
Third-party arrangements are explicitly addressed for Amazon: a subscription obtained through another provider follows that provider’s billing and refund policy. The same practical rule applies whenever a bank, app marketplace or other partner—not the retailer—appears as the merchant on your receipt. A retailer may be able to explain the plan but still be unable to stop the intermediary’s billing.
Check for duplicate subscriptions if you have used more than one channel. For example, a direct retailer plan and an app-store plan can have separate renewal dates and separate cancellation controls. Cancel each active subscription, then compare the confirmations with your card statement.
Can I pause, downgrade or change the payment method instead of canceling?
Choose the alternative only when it matches your goal. A pause suspends billing for a defined period but normally also suspends benefits; a downgrade changes the price or features while leaving the account set to renew; and a payment-method change merely tells the merchant where to attempt the next charge.
- Pause: Walmart+ offers an eligible one-month pause up to three times per year, with no billing or benefits during the pause. Resuming creates a new billing date.
- Downgrade or upgrade: Walmart monthly members can upgrade to annual, but the cited help guidance does not offer annual-to-monthly switching. Confirm when the new plan takes effect and what happens to the current term.
- Payment method: Costco lets members update the stored card through its website, counter, phone or chat. That update does not turn off auto-renewal.
If the objective is simply to pay a lower price, read the plan-change confirmation for the next charge date and any prorating language. If the objective is to stop all charges, use the explicit cancellation control instead.
How can I avoid a renewal charge when the deadline is close?
- Cancel immediately through the documented account path instead of waiting for customer support hours.
- Use the strictest timing rule that applies: Walmart’s term-end cutoff, Instacart’s possible 24-hour charge window, Costco’s 72-hour requirement, or Amazon’s “before a charge” requirement.
- If a page offers a pause, downgrade or reminder, select it only if that is your intended outcome; none of those choices is automatically a cancellation.
- Capture the final status, expiration date and timestamp. If a confirmation email does not arrive, return to the account and contact the billing owner while the evidence is fresh.
- Check the payment statement after the expected renewal date. If a charge appears, use the saved confirmation and the merchant’s stated refund process to request review.
A few extra days of access are usually less costly than missing a cutoff, but do not assume that waiting preserves a refund window. Instacart’s annual eligibility period is five calendar days, Amazon’s cited direct-signup period is three business days, and Costco’s prevention rule is measured in hours before the renewal month.

First verify whether the charge belongs to the same billing entity and whether the cancellation was completed before its cutoff. A pending authorization can appear before a cancellation is processed, while a completed renewal may be governed by a narrow refund window or benefit-use condition.

- Check the account for the cancellation timestamp, expiration date and confirmation email.
- Confirm whether the charge is from a direct retailer account, an app marketplace or another intermediary.
- Contact the actual billing owner, not only a retailer whose storefront you used.

Do not assume that deleting the payment card reverses the membership or the charge; it does neither according to the documented workflows above. If support denies a request, ask for the specific term or cutoff they relied on and keep the case number with your records.

Keep the confirmation page or email, the date and time, the membership expiration date, the plan identifier and the payment statement showing the disputed charge. Retain chat transcripts and case numbers when cancellation was handled by phone or support. These records let the billing owner match your request to the correct account, especially when a household has multiple memberships or payment methods.
Recheck the account after the next scheduled renewal date. A canceled plan should not show a new term or a new billing date. If it does, contact support promptly with the original confirmation rather than starting a second cancellation that could obscure the timeline.
