To stop an AI subscription from renewing, cancel it in the system that actually bills you: the AI provider’s website, Apple’s App Store, Google Play, or Microsoft’s account portal. Find the latest receipt first, cancel at least 24 hours before the next billing date when the provider specifies that cutoff, and save the confirmation or expiration date. Then reopen the billing page to verify the renewal is off.
Deleting the app only removes its software from your device; it does not terminate a subscription. Cancellation normally stops the next renewal while leaving paid access available until the current billing period ends. A refund is a separate request and is not guaranteed simply because you canceled.

The merchant on your receipt determines where cancellation must happen. An AI app can be installed on your phone while the subscription is owned by Apple or Google, or you may have subscribed on the provider’s website and later installed the app. Start with the newest email receipt, bank statement, or app-store purchase record.
Read the receipt, not the app icon
- A receipt naming the AI company and its website usually indicates a direct web or desktop subscription.
- An Apple receipt or an entry under your Apple account’s subscriptions means Apple controls renewal.
- A Google Play receipt or an entry in Google Play subscriptions means Google controls renewal.
- A Microsoft charge or an entry in Microsoft account Services & subscriptions means Microsoft controls the plan.
Note the exact next billing date and the account email shown on the receipt. If you have more than one email address, check each account before assuming the subscription has disappeared.

What should I do before I cancel?
A short preparation check prevents most “I canceled but was charged” problems. Keep the receipt open while you work so you use the account and platform that paid.
- Record the merchant, plan name, account email, and next billing date.
- Open the billing portal for that merchant rather than relying on the app’s uninstall or logout controls.
- Cancel at least 24 hours before the stated renewal deadline. OpenAI and Anthropic both specify this buffer; allowing more time is safer when a store or bank posts transactions in a different time zone.
- Complete every confirmation screen. A page that only offers “pause,” “change plan,” or “turn off notifications” has not necessarily canceled billing.
- Save the confirmation email, screenshot the expiration date, or copy the cancellation reference number.
Do not remove payment details first. A subscription can remain active even when a card is replaced, and a failed payment may trigger retries rather than a clean cancellation.

How do I cancel a ChatGPT subscription?
Use the path that matches the original purchase channel. OpenAI treats web, Apple, Google Play, and workspace billing as separate systems.
Web subscription purchased from ChatGPT
- Sign in to the ChatGPT account that appears on the receipt.
- Open Settings.
- Select Billing.
- Choose Cancel plan and finish the confirmation prompts.
OpenAI says to cancel at least 24 hours before the next billing date. Paid features ordinarily remain available through the current paid period, so seeing access after cancellation is expected. The billing page should show the plan’s end or expiration status after you finish.
Subscription purchased through Apple
- On the iPhone or iPad used for the purchase, open Settings.
- Tap your name, then Subscriptions.
- Select ChatGPT.
- Tap Cancel Subscription and confirm.
If ChatGPT does not appear, check other Apple IDs that may have been signed in when the purchase was made. Apple—not OpenAI—controls the renewal in this case.
Subscription purchased through Google Play
- Open Google Play with the Google account that paid.
- Open Subscriptions.
- Select ChatGPT.
- Tap Cancel subscription and complete the prompts.
A Google Play purchase must be canceled in Google Play even if you use ChatGPT mainly on the web. The subscription generally remains usable until the paid period expires.
ChatGPT Business workspace billing
Only the workspace owner or an administrator with billing permissions can manage a business plan. Use the workspace’s billing settings, not an individual member’s personal subscription page. If the plan is absent, sign in to the workspace account that originally accepted the charge.

How do I cancel a Claude subscription?
Anthropic separates web or desktop billing from subscriptions created through Apple or Google. The plan remains active through the current billing period after cancellation.
Web or desktop purchase
- Sign in to the Claude account associated with the receipt.
- Open Settings.
- Choose Billing.
- Select Cancel and confirm the cancellation.
Anthropic says to cancel at least 24 hours before the next billing date to avoid the next charge. Keep the displayed end date or confirmation message as proof.
iPhone, iPad, or Android purchase
In Claude, open Billing and choose Manage subscription. That flow may send you to the relevant Apple or Google subscription page, where you must complete the store’s cancellation controls. If you go directly to the store, use the Apple Settings > [your name] > Subscriptions path or Google Play Subscriptions page and select Claude. The store account that paid—not merely the device currently running Claude—owns the renewal.
How do I cancel a Microsoft-billed AI plan?
Microsoft subscriptions are managed from the Microsoft account that purchased them. App-store purchases are excluded from this process and must be canceled with Apple or Google.
- Sign in to the purchasing Microsoft account and open Services & subscriptions.
- Find the AI plan and select Manage.
- Choose Cancel, then follow the eligibility and confirmation screens.
- Save the resulting expiration or cancellation notice.
If the control says Turn on recurring billing instead of Manage, Microsoft says the subscription is already set to expire and will not renew automatically. Do not turn recurring billing back on while checking the status.
Microsoft determines refund eligibility during the cancellation flow. Timing, subscription type, country, and purchase channel can affect the result, so read the offer shown before accepting it.
What if I subscribed through Apple or Google but cannot find the plan in the AI app?
That is normal for store-managed subscriptions. The provider’s account page may show that you use a paid tier without offering a cancellation button because Apple or Google owns the transaction.

Apple account checks
- Open the Apple ID’s Settings > [your name] > Subscriptions list.
- Check every Apple ID used on the device and review Apple receipt emails.
- Select the AI service and look for the cancellation command or an expiration date.
Google account checks
- Open Google Play’s Subscriptions list while signed in to each Google account used on the device.
- Search purchase history for the service name and match the order to your bank statement.
- Use Cancel subscription on the matching entry, then retain the confirmation.
Changing phones, reinstalling the app, or signing out does not move ownership from one store account to another.
Does deleting the AI app cancel the subscription?
No. Uninstalling ChatGPT, Claude, or another AI app removes local files but leaves the recurring agreement untouched. OpenAI states explicitly: “Uninstalling the ChatGPT app does not cancel your subscription.”
The same principle applies when you clear app data, disable notifications, or delete an account on a device. Use the provider, Apple, Google, or Microsoft cancellation control tied to the payment record.
How can I verify that cancellation worked?
Do not rely on a single toast message or on losing access to a premium feature. Verify the subscription’s renewal state in the system that billed you.

- Reopen the same billing page after cancellation.
- Confirm that it says canceled, gives an expires on date, or—on Microsoft—shows Turn on recurring billing.
- Check that the next billing date has been replaced by an expiration date or removed.
- Keep the confirmation email or screenshot with the date and account identifier.
- Review the next bank or card statement for a pending renewal. A charge authorized before cancellation may still settle, so compare its transaction date with your cancellation time.
If the status still says active with a future renewal, repeat the process in the correct account or contact the billing owner before that renewal date.
Can I get a refund after a charge has already posted?
Cancellation and refund are separate actions. Turning off renewal prevents a future charge; it does not automatically reverse a payment that has already processed.
ChatGPT charges
OpenAI directs customers with direct web or Google Play purchases to request a refund through OpenAI Support. Apple-billed purchases must be submitted to Apple. Eligibility and timing are handled in the separate refund process, so include the receipt and the account used for payment.

Claude charges
Anthropic says payments are generally non-refundable except where its terms or local law require otherwise. If you believe an exception applies, use Anthropic’s support-based eligibility flow and provide the transaction details.

Microsoft evaluates refund eligibility during its cancellation process. The outcome can depend on when you cancel, the subscription type, your country, and whether the purchase was direct or through a store.
Submitting a refund request does not itself cancel the subscription. Complete both actions when you want to stop future renewals and ask about an existing charge.

Missing plans usually indicate a different billing owner or account, while duplicate charges can indicate two separate subscriptions rather than one failed cancellation.
The plan is not listed
- Search all email inboxes for receipts and note the exact merchant name.
- Sign out and check other provider accounts, Apple IDs, Google accounts, or Microsoft accounts.
- Compare the charge date and amount with each account’s subscription history.
- Check whether a family organizer, workspace owner, or former employee made the purchase.
Two subscriptions appear
Cancel each entry separately. For example, a web plan and an Apple plan can coexist because each system has its own renewal record. Save both confirmations and keep the plan you actually intend to use until its paid period ends.
A renewal happened after you canceled
First compare the transaction timestamp with the cancellation confirmation and the provider’s 24-hour cutoff. If the cancellation was timely but the charge still posted, contact the billing owner with the receipt, confirmation, account email, and expiration date; request a refund through the separate route for that platform.

How can I prevent another accidental renewal?
After confirming cancellation, keep a lightweight record until the expiration date passes. Store the receipt, cancellation confirmation, account email, and the last four digits or transaction identifier in a secure place. Set a reminder for the expiration date if you need to export data or downgrade before access ends.
When a trial or promotional period is involved, treat its end date as the renewal deadline even if the current charge is zero. Review subscriptions whenever you change Apple IDs, Google accounts, Microsoft accounts, or workspace ownership, because moving between accounts can create a second subscription rather than transfer the first.
If you still see a renewal after the recorded expiration date, do not uninstall the app again. Return to the billing owner, verify the account and transaction, and submit the platform-specific support or refund request with your saved evidence.

How long do I keep using an AI service after canceling?
Most paid plans remain available until the end of the period you already purchased. The exact expiration date is shown by the provider or app store, and access can end at that date even if you canceled weeks earlier.
Can I cancel an AI subscription from a web browser if I bought it on my phone?
Only when the phone purchase was billed directly by the provider. Apple- and Google-managed subscriptions must be changed in the matching store account, even if the service also offers a browser version.
