Cancel the VPN through the company that billed you—not by deleting the app. Check your receipt and bank or card statement, then turn off renewal in the provider’s account, Apple Subscriptions, Google Play Subscriptions, or the reseller’s portal. Save the confirmation and verify the status. After billing is settled, uninstall the app and remove VPN profiles, saved connections, device-management entries, and virtual adapters that may remain. A “lifetime” label can mean a one-time license, prepaid access, or a promotion with its own conditions, so use the receipt and account page to determine whether anything is actually renewing.
What should I do first?
Identify the billing owner before changing anything on your phone or computer. The app’s presence does not tell you who processes payment, and the same VPN may be sold directly, through an app store, or by a reseller.

- Read the bank or card statement. The merchant descriptor can reveal the billing company when the email is missing or the account uses a different address.
- Check the obvious subscription dashboards. Review the VPN provider’s account, Apple Subscriptions, and Google Play Subscriptions. If all three are empty, the receipt or statement should point to the reseller or payment processor.
- Record the account details. Save the email address, order number, current renewal date, and screenshots of the status page before canceling.
Apple states that a subscription with no Apple receipt may have been billed by another company. Mozilla gives the same practical advice: use the receipt or statement when Apple, Google, and the provider do not show an active plan. Do not create a second account just because the first login appears empty; an alternate email, Apple private-relay address, or reseller account may hold the purchase.
How do I cancel a VPN bought directly from the provider?
Use the provider’s website account, not the mobile app’s uninstall control. Sign in, open the subscription or billing area, start cancellation, complete every confirmation screen, and verify that automatic renewal is disabled.

Typical provider workflow
- Sign in to the account associated with the receipt.
- Open Subscription, Billing, Plan, or a similarly named page.
- Select Cancel, Turn off auto-renew, or the equivalent option.
- Complete any reason survey and final confirmation. Closing the page after the first warning may leave renewal active.
- Save the confirmation email and capture the page showing Canceled, Expires on, or an equivalent end date.
Examples of provider wording
Proton’s documented path is Account > Subscription > Cancel subscription, followed by choosing a reason and selecting Submit. TotalVPN directs customers to its online portal. Labels differ among providers, but the result to look for is the same: a clear statement that recurring renewal is off and the date on which paid access ends.
If the account offers only a one-time purchase and no renewal switch, do not claim that you canceled a recurring subscription. Document that the plan is non-renewing and keep the receipt. If a charge appears later, that evidence helps the provider or payment processor investigate.

Cancel an App Store purchase in Apple’s subscription settings while signed in to the Apple Account that made the purchase. Deleting the VPN from an iPhone, iPad, or Mac does not change the subscription status.
iPhone or iPad
- Open Settings.
- Tap your Apple Account name at the top.
- Tap Subscriptions.
- Select the VPN.
- Tap Cancel Subscription and confirm.
Mac App Store
- Open the App Store.
- Select your account name.
- Choose Account Settings or Settings, then open Subscriptions.
- Select the VPN, choose Cancel Subscription, and confirm.
Apple says that if there is no Cancel button or an expiration message appears in red, the subscription is already canceled. Take a screenshot of that status. If the VPN is missing, switch to other Apple Accounts used on the device and search email for the Apple receipt; an App Store purchase cannot be canceled from the provider’s website.
How do I cancel a Google Play VPN subscription?
Use Google Play’s subscription manager. Google explicitly says that uninstalling an app does not cancel its subscription.

- Open Google Play.
- Tap your profile icon.
- Choose Payments & subscriptions > Subscriptions.
- Select the VPN.
- Follow the cancellation prompts through the final confirmation.
Check the list under every Google account on the device if the VPN does not appear. A purchase made with a different account will not show in the current account’s subscription list. Keep the Google confirmation email and verify that the subscription now shows an end date or canceled status.

What does “lifetime” mean for a VPN?
“Lifetime” is a vendor term, not a universal licensing category. It may describe a one-time, non-renewing license; a prepaid period marketed as lifetime access; or a promotion with conditions such as a particular account, device limit, or service availability.
How to determine which type you have
- One-time license: The receipt shows a single payment and no renewal date or recurring billing authorization.
- Prepaid access: The account shows an expiration date even though no monthly or annual charge is scheduled.
- Recurring plan with promotional wording: The offer uses “lifetime” in marketing, but the receipt or account page lists a renewal interval.
- Reseller entitlement: A third party controls payment and may have separate terms from the VPN provider’s normal plans.
Check the exact receipt, terms attached to the order, and the account’s renewal setting. If there is no recurring charge, there may be nothing to cancel; you can still request account closure or remove the software. The official cancellation guidance from Apple, Google, Proton, TotalVPN, and Mozilla explains how to stop billing or renewal but does not define every company’s use of “lifetime.”
Will I keep access after canceling?
Usually, yes. Cancellation generally stops the next renewal while leaving service available until the prepaid term or current billing period ends.
- Google says access continues for the time already paid after cancellation.
- Proton and TotalVPN state that service remains active until the expiration date or end of the current billing period.
Record the displayed end date. If access stops immediately, compare the account status with the receipt and contact the billing owner; an immediate lockout can indicate a failed payment, a separate refund, or a policy specific to that plan.

Can I get a refund after canceling?
Cancellation and refund are separate requests. Turning off renewal prevents a future charge but does not automatically return money for the current period.
Requesting a provider refund
Use the provider’s refund form or support channel and include the order number, purchase date, account email, and the reason required by its policy. Proton documents a 30-day money-back route for eligible purchases. Eligibility can depend on where you bought the plan and whether the provider’s conditions were met.
Requesting an Apple or Google refund
For an App Store or Google Play purchase, follow that store’s refund process rather than the VPN provider’s direct process. The store may decide the request even when the VPN company supplied the software. Do not assume that canceling first creates a refund automatically; submit the refund request separately and retain its case number.
How do I uninstall the VPN app safely?
Uninstall only after billing is settled, unless you need to stop a connection immediately. On Windows or macOS, use the vendor’s uninstaller when one is supplied because VPN clients can install drivers, helper services, or network extensions that a normal app deletion may leave behind.

- Disconnect the VPN from its own app and quit the app.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps (or Apps & features on older Windows).
- Select the VPN and choose Uninstall. If the vendor supplies a separate uninstaller, use it.
- Restart Windows before checking network settings.
macOS
- Disconnect the VPN and quit its menu-bar process.
- Run the provider’s uninstaller if included. Otherwise move the app to the Trash and follow any removal instructions supplied by the provider.
- Restart the Mac before removing remaining profiles or network extensions.
iPhone and iPad
- Touch and hold the VPN app.
- Tap Remove App, then Delete App.
- Confirm that you are deleting the app, not merely removing it from the Home Screen.
Android
- Open Settings > Apps (the wording can vary by manufacturer).
- Select the VPN and tap Uninstall.
- Alternatively, uninstall it from Google Play’s app page.
Uninstalling removes the program but does not necessarily remove a saved VPN connection, mobile configuration profile, device-management profile, or virtual adapter.

How do I remove VPN profiles and leftover connections?
Inspect the operating system after uninstalling. Delete only entries belonging to the VPN you removed; a work, school, or managed profile may be required for access and should not be removed without administrator approval.
iPhone or iPad
- Open Settings > General > VPN & Device Management.
- Review VPN configurations and profiles for the provider.
- Open the relevant non-managed profile and choose Delete Profile, then enter the device passcode if asked.
- Restart the device.
Apple says deleting a profile removes its settings, apps, and data. Do not delete a profile marked as managed by an employer or school unless that organization tells you to.
macOS 13 or later
- Open System Settings > General > Device Management.
- Inspect profiles or management entries associated with the VPN.
- Remove the relevant, non-managed item, then restart.
macOS 12 or earlier
- Open System Preferences > Profiles.
- Select the provider’s profile and remove it if it is not managed by an organization.
- Open network settings and remove any VPN service that remains, then restart.
Windows saved connections and adapters
- Open Settings > Network & internet > VPN and remove the provider’s saved VPN connection.
- Check Settings > Network & internet > Advanced network settings for a provider-specific virtual adapter.
- Remove the adapter only when you can identify it as belonging to the uninstalled VPN; do not remove your physical Wi-Fi or Ethernet adapter.
- Restart Windows and confirm that normal internet access still works.
Android
- Open Settings > Network & internet > VPN (the exact label varies).
- Tap the provider’s saved VPN and choose Forget or Delete.
- Disable any always-on VPN or “block connections without VPN” setting that references the removed service.
- Restart the phone.
How can I verify that cancellation and cleanup worked?
Use a four-part check rather than relying on the app icon disappearing.

- Software: The app and any vendor uninstaller entry are gone.
- Configuration: VPN settings contain no unexpected profile, saved connection, always-on rule, or provider-specific virtual adapter.
- Money: Watch the next statement for the absence of another charge. A pending authorization may take time to disappear, but a completed new charge requires follow-up with the billing owner.
Test ordinary Wi-Fi or mobile-data access after the restart. If websites fail, a leftover kill switch, proxy, DNS setting, or adapter may still be active; temporarily disable only the setting clearly associated with the removed VPN and restore the operating system’s normal automatic network configuration.
What if the subscription is missing from my account?
A missing listing usually means you are looking in the wrong billing system or signed in with a different account, not that the charge has vanished.
Work through this order
- Compare the merchant name and purchase date on the statement with the receipt.
- Search every email account for the order number, including an Apple private-relay address.
- Check all Apple Accounts or Google accounts used on the device.
- Sign in to the provider using the email shown on the receipt, not only the address currently saved in the app.
- Contact the reseller or payment processor named on the receipt if no provider, Apple, or Google record exists.
Provide the merchant descriptor, transaction date, amount, order number, and the last four digits of the payment method when contacting support. Never send a full card number or account password.
What should I do if cancellation fails or a charge appears again?
- No cancel button: Check whether the account already shows an expiration date. Apple treats a missing cancel button or red expiration message as evidence that the subscription is already canceled.
- Provider says Apple or Google owns billing: Return to the relevant store subscription screen; the provider cannot normally change a store-managed renewal.
- Store shows nothing: Recheck the receipt and statement for a reseller or a different account.
- Charge after a confirmed cancellation: Send the confirmation, receipt, and new statement entry to the billing owner. If the merchant does not resolve an unauthorized recurring charge, ask your card issuer about its dispute process.
- App keeps reconnecting: Remove always-on settings, saved profiles, and virtual adapters, then restart. A device-management profile may require the organization’s administrator.
Should I close the VPN account too?
Account deletion is optional and separate from stopping renewal. If you want the account removed, first download invoices or other records you may need for a refund or charge dispute, then use the provider’s privacy or account-closure process. Deleting an account does not by itself prove that an Apple, Google, or reseller subscription was canceled, so verify the external billing record first.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I cancel a lifetime VPN subscription after I already deleted the app?
Yes. Reinstalling is usually unnecessary. Use the receipt or bank statement to identify the billing owner, cancel in that owner’s portal, and then inspect device settings for saved VPN profiles or always-on rules.
How long should I keep the cancellation confirmation?
Keep it through at least the next normal billing date and until the next statement confirms that no renewal charge posted. Store the receipt, confirmation email, and screenshots together so support can match the transaction quickly.
Will removing a VPN profile erase my browsing history?
No. Removing a profile changes the device’s connection settings; it does not erase browser history, downloaded files, or records held by websites and other services. Handle those data separately through each app’s privacy controls.
Why does my internet stop working after uninstalling a VPN?
A kill switch, proxy, DNS override, or virtual adapter may remain. Re-enable the operating system’s normal automatic network settings, remove only the VPN’s leftover configuration, restart, and contact the provider if its uninstaller has a dedicated cleanup tool.
