Buy Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition for PC on Windows to receive both PC editions in one purchase. On a Mac, Minecraft’s listed edition is Java Edition; Bedrock is not listed as a macOS edition. Xbox, PlayStation 4/5, and Nintendo Switch use Bedrock Edition, purchased through each console’s own store. Which Minecraft edition should I buy?

Java and Bedrock worlds are separate editions. A friend playing Java on a Mac cannot join a Bedrock world on Xbox, and a PlayStation Bedrock player cannot join a Java server. Everyone joining a multiplayer session must use the edition supported by that world or server.

How do I buy and install Minecraft on a Windows PC?
Buy the official PC bundle, install the Minecraft Launcher, sign in with the purchasing Microsoft account, and select Java or Bedrock from the launcher. The same Windows purchase provides both editions.
- Check the requirements first. The current Java minimums are Windows 10 64-bit, 8 GB of memory with a discrete graphics processor or 12 GB with integrated graphics, and a Vulkan 1.3-capable GPU with at least 2 GB of video memory. Bedrock’s listed minimum memory is 4 GB, with 8 GB recommended. If the computer does not meet the Java requirements, buying the bundle does not make Java run acceptably on that machine.
- Open the official Minecraft PC product page and purchase “Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition for PC.” The official product description states that Java Edition and Bedrock Edition are sold as a bundle on PC. Use the Microsoft account that you intend to keep for Minecraft.
- Download the Minecraft Launcher. Use the official Minecraft Help download section to obtain the current launcher installer, then run it and complete the Windows installation.
- Sign in to the launcher. Use the same Microsoft account used during checkout. The purchased game should appear in the launcher library. If it does not, sign out and back in after checking that the account address is identical.
- Pick the edition. Select Java Edition for Java-only servers, extensive PC modding, and play with Java users on Windows, Mac, or Linux. Select Bedrock Edition for controller support, Marketplace content, or cross-play with Bedrock players on consoles and mobile.
- Install and launch. Choose the edition in the launcher, select the install or play control, and allow the launcher to download the game files. Repeat the selection when you want to switch editions; owning the bundle does not merge Java and Bedrock worlds into one game.
Which Windows edition is better for playing with friends?
Ask what your friends are running rather than which edition sounds more advanced. Friends on Xbox, PlayStation, Switch, or mobile need Bedrock, and a Windows player can join them with the Bedrock installation included in the PC bundle. Friends using Java on Windows, macOS, or Linux need the Java installation.

Can a Mac play with an Xbox, PlayStation, or Switch?
Not through the standard Java installation. Mac uses Java Edition, while Xbox, PlayStation, and Switch use Bedrock Edition, and Java and Bedrock multiplayer networks are separate. To play with those console players, you need a Bedrock-capable device such as a supported Windows installation rather than the Mac Java edition.

How do I buy and install Minecraft on Xbox?
Buy or redeem Minecraft through the Xbox or Microsoft Store, install it from the console library, and sign in with the required Microsoft account. Xbox consoles use Bedrock Edition.
- Open the Xbox or Microsoft Store on the console. Find Minecraft and complete the purchase or redeem an eligible code with the Microsoft account that will own the game.
- Install from the store or library. After the transaction is complete, select the install control. If the game was previously owned, locate it in the account’s games library and start the download there.

- Open Nintendo eShop on the Switch. Purchase Minecraft with the Nintendo account that should own the game.

- Launch Minecraft from the Home screen. Let the initial files finish installing before starting multiplayer.

For a mixed group, first identify the edition and then check each console player’s service subscription. A Windows player can join console friends by launching Bedrock, not Java. A Mac player remains on Java and therefore needs Java-playing friends.

Why does Java list different memory requirements?

Choose Java when you need PC modding
Java is the edition associated with the Java modding ecosystem and Java-specific server communities. It runs on Windows, Mac, and Linux, so a Java group can include players on all three desktop operating systems. Those players still need to agree on the server and any required modifications.

Bedrock is the shared edition across Windows, Xbox, PlayStation, Switch, and mobile. It is the practical choice when one group uses several of those platforms, and it supports controller or touch input and Marketplace content.
Choose based on the input device
Bedrock is designed for controller and touch play as well as PC input. If you want to play on a console from the sofa or on a touchscreen device, Bedrock is the relevant edition. Java is the natural choice for a keyboard-and-mouse PC setup centered on Java servers or mods.

- Windows launcher does not show the game: confirm that the launcher is signed in with the same Microsoft account used to purchase the PC bundle. After signing in again, check the library for both Java and Bedrock entries.
- Mac shows a Bedrock expectation: macOS is listed for Java Edition, not Bedrock. Install Java from the launcher instead of looking for a Mac Bedrock package.
- The wrong edition was launched: on Windows, return to the launcher’s edition selector and choose Java or Bedrock according to the friends, server, or device you need to join.
