The right Nintendo Switch 2 purchase depends on the game you want, whether digital downloads suit you, and how much online play and storage you will use. In the United States, Nintendo lists three current packages: a $499.99 console, a $549.99 Mario Kart World bundle, and a $529.99 Nintendo Switch Sports Resort bundle (prices checked October 2026). Both bundles include a digital game and three months of Nintendo Switch Online Individual Membership, not a cartridge. The console box already contains the dock, charger, HDMI cable, grip, straps, and two Joy-Con 2 controllers. Budget separately for games, a microSD Express card, and optional accessories; an ordinary Switch microSD card cannot expand Switch 2 game storage.

Choose a bundle only when you would buy its included game and use the three-month online membership. Otherwise, the $499.99 standard console leaves you free to select a different game, physical edition or subscription plan.
Standard Nintendo Switch 2 — $499.99
The standard package is the flexible choice. It includes the same hardware as the bundles, but no game or Nintendo Switch Online trial. You can put the difference toward another title, a physical copy, storage or an accessory that matches your setup.

Mario Kart World bundle — $549.99
This package adds a full digital download of Mario Kart World and three months of Nintendo Switch Online Individual Membership. Nintendo’s listed comparison says the combination represents $37.98 in savings against buying the console, game and membership at their suggested prices. The membership automatically renews at the then-current rate after the initial term unless you cancel it, as stated in the bundle’s product disclaimer: Nintendo’s Mario Kart World bundle terms.
Nintendo lists Mario Kart World at $79.99 when sold separately. The bundle’s $50 premium over the console is therefore meaningful only if you want this game and value the included membership; it is not a universal discount on every Switch 2 purchase.
Sports Resort bundle — $529.99
The Sports Resort package adds a full digital download of Nintendo Switch Sports Resort and three months of individual online membership for $30 above the console. Nintendo advertises $27.98 in savings against separate suggested prices. Nintendo lists the game separately at $49.99, so this is the lower-cost bundle for buyers who specifically want Sports Resort.
How to compare the bundles at checkout
- Write down the game you would buy first. If it is neither included title, start with the standard console.
- Check whether you prefer a digital download. Neither current bundle supplies a physical game card.
- Subtract any Nintendo Switch Online membership time you already own; duplicate trial months may be less valuable than the headline saving.
- Compare the retailer’s final total, including tax and any current promotion, with Nintendo’s suggested price.
- Set a reminder to cancel auto-renewal if you do not want a paid membership after the three-month term.
What is included in every Switch 2 box?
All three packages contain the same core hardware. Nintendo lists the console, left and right Joy-Con 2, AC adapter, USB-C charging cable, dock, Joy-Con 2 grip, two wrist straps and an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable in the box. The grip is the standard non-charging model; it is not the separately sold Joy-Con 2 Charging Grip.
Because a dock, charger and two controllers are included, a new owner does not need to buy a second controller or a television cable to start playing. Optional purchases should solve a specific need—travel protection, longer multiplayer sessions, video chat or more storage—rather than duplicate equipment already supplied.

Which Switch 2 accessories are genuinely useful?
Accessory value depends on how you play. Nintendo’s U.S. listing prices below were checked in October 2026 and are examples, not a required starter bundle.

A carrying case and screen protector are sensible for handheld travel. Nintendo also describes a larger case that can hold the dock, cables, controllers and up to six game cards. Choose the larger format only if you routinely transport the complete setup.
Do you need a Pro Controller?
No. Two Joy-Con 2 controllers and the included grip cover normal play. A Pro Controller is an ergonomic upgrade for extended docked sessions or people who prefer a larger gamepad, not a prerequisite for any listed bundle.
Do you need a camera for GameChat?
Voice GameChat uses the console’s built-in microphone. A compatible USB camera is required for video, and Nintendo says some existing USB cameras may work without promising compatibility for every model. To check one, open System Settings > Controllers & Accessories > Test USB Camera. GameChat also requires Nintendo Switch Online and text-message verification; a parent or guardian must approve it for supervised users under 16. Details are in Nintendo’s Switch 2 FAQ.
How much storage does Switch 2 have, and which card works?
Switch 2 has 256GB of internal UFS storage, with some capacity reserved for system data. Nintendo specifies a microSD Express slot supporting cards up to 2TB. Only the Express standard is supported for Switch 2 game storage; an ordinary microSD card from an original Switch is not interchangeable for this purpose. Nintendo’s named 256GB example is the Samsung microSD Express Card 256GB for Nintendo Switch 2. See the official technical specifications before buying a card.

The 256GB figure is not a promise that a fixed number of games will fit. Install sizes vary, updates consume space and part of the capacity is reserved. Check each game’s listed size, then choose a card with room for updates and future purchases. A card near the console’s maximum capacity is unnecessary if you mostly use small titles, while a frequent digital buyer should plan expansion early.
Can an old Switch microSD card be reused?
Not as Switch 2 game storage. The new console requires microSD Express, so a conventional card used in an older Switch does not meet the specified standard. Treat the old card as an original-Switch accessory unless its labeling explicitly identifies it as microSD Express and it meets Nintendo’s requirements.
What is the difference between a game card, a download code and a game-key card?
Packaging language matters. A download code gives you no physical card and requires an account download. A game-key card is also not a cartridge containing the complete game: the first use downloads game data over the internet, needs enough internal or microSD Express space, and requires the card to remain inserted when you play.
If you need offline setup or want the smallest possible download, inspect the exact edition and package description before purchase. “Physical” on a retailer page does not by itself prove that all game data is on the card.

The Expansion Pack includes additional classic-game collections and access to select upgrade packs or downloadable content; it does not mean every Switch 2 upgrade is included. Nintendo lists these plans and terms at Nintendo Switch Online.
Bundle membership auto-renews after its initial term unless canceled. If you already have an active membership, calculate the value of the extra months rather than counting the trial as a new service. A family plan can be cheaper per person when several household accounts need online features, but the listed family price is a separate annual plan, not an automatic conversion of an individual trial.
How do Switch games and accounts move to Switch 2?
Compatible original Switch physical and digital games can carry over, but compatibility is not universal. Nintendo’s System Transfer requires an active internet connection and a linked Nintendo Account on the old system; eligible digital purchases can then be redownloaded. Some games receive free updates, while select titles sell paid Switch 2 Edition upgrades.

- Review which digital games and save data are eligible before starting.
- Keep physical cards available; a compatible card game still needs its card inserted to play.
- Check the individual game listing for upgrade pricing or restrictions rather than assuming a free enhancement.
Nintendo’s compatibility information identifies portions of its table as current to June 5, 2025, so verify a particular title’s listing before selling the old console or discarding accessories. Ring Fit Adventure needs original-generation Joy-Con for the Ring-Con; when those controllers are used with Switch 2, you need another way to charge them.

What changed from the 2025 launch price?
Do not use launch articles as current U.S. pricing. Nintendo’s April 18, 2025 launch announcement listed $449.99 for the console and $499.99 for its then-current Mario Kart bundle. The current October 2026 listings are $499.99, $549.99 and $529.99 for the standard, Mario Kart World and Sports Resort packages respectively. Nintendo also announced a limited-time $499.99 Choose Your Game bundle in May 2026; that announcement does not establish present stock, so treat it only as a historical offer or a retailer-verified promotion.
How should you choose your Switch 2 setup?
Make the decision in this order:
- Choose the game first. If you want Mario Kart World or Sports Resort, compare its bundle with the separate game price. If not, buy the standard console.
- Decide digital versus physical. Bundles are digital, while game-key cards still require an initial download. Select packaging that matches your internet access and collection preferences.
- Plan storage from your library. Estimate the size of likely downloads and buy microSD Express only when internal capacity will not cover them.
- Match accessories to play style. Add a Pro Controller for long TV sessions, a case for travel, a camera for video chat or extra Joy-Con 2 for additional players.
- Price the second year. Include Nintendo Switch Online renewal and any paid Switch 2 Edition upgrades in your ownership budget.
- Verify compatibility. Check each older game, controller and accessory before assuming it transfers.
Common buying mistakes and fixes
- Assuming a bundle includes a cartridge: It does not; the games are digital downloads. Choose a separate physical edition if that distinction matters.
- Buying the wrong memory card: Ordinary microSD is not supported for Switch 2 game storage. Look specifically for microSD Express.
- Counting the trial as free forever: Auto-renewal begins after the included term unless canceled. Set a calendar reminder.
- Buying a charging grip by accident: The box includes a standard grip. Purchase the $39.99 charging grip only if charging while held is useful.
- Expecting every Switch game to work unchanged: Compatibility and upgrade treatment vary by title. Check Nintendo’s listing before transferring or selling hardware.
- Treating an old promotion as current: Limited-time bundles can disappear. Confirm inventory and final price at checkout.

The console can be used offline after games and updates that require downloads are installed, but a bundled digital game needs an internet connection for its initial download. Game-key cards likewise require an initial download and enough storage before offline play.
Can two people share one Nintendo Switch Online individual membership?
An individual plan is for one Nintendo Account. Households with multiple accounts should compare Nintendo’s annual family plan, listed at $34.99 for standard service or $79.99 with Expansion Pack.
What should I do with my old Switch before transferring data?
Keep the old console powered and connected until the System Transfer finishes, and do not delete its user or format its storage first. Confirm that cloud saves, digital licenses and any game-specific transfer rules are handled for the titles you care about.
Is a Switch 2 camera required for voice chat?
