Apple’s U.S. guidance is useful for understanding its own store, authorized resellers, financing, and refurbished program; seller terms and consumer rights vary by country.
Start by verifying who is selling the iPhone
Use your local Apple online store or find an Apple Authorized Reseller through Apple’s locator. Authorization identifies a sales channel Apple recognizes, but it does not replace checking the details of your specific order.

On a marketplace, distinguish the marketplace from the actual seller. Check the seller named on the product listing and checkout page, and confirm who takes payment and handles delivery, returns, and warranty claims. A familiar marketplace name or polished listing does not by itself establish that a particular seller or offer is trustworthy.

Check the exact phone and its condition
Before comparing prices, record the precise model, storage capacity, and condition stated in the offer. Make sure the checkout summary matches the listing. A low price is not useful if the device is a different model, has less storage, or is refurbished when you expect a new phone.

- Model and storage: Check the exact model and capacity, rather than relying on a headline or product image.
- Seller and fulfillment: Identify the legal seller and who is responsible for shipping and customer service.
- Total cost: Review the amount due now, any recurring installment payments, and the complete payment schedule.
Determine whether the iPhone is unlocked or carrier-financed
An unlocked phone offers more flexibility to use with a compatible carrier, but you still need to confirm that the model works with your service. Carrier installment plans can impose a lock: Apple’s U.S. shopping guidance says iPhones purchased through AT&T, T-Mobile, or Verizon installment plans are locked to that carrier until paid in full. That statement is specific to Apple’s U.S. guidance and named plans; check the current terms of the exact plan with the carrier before committing.
Compare the full cost and conditions of financing with buying unlocked. Do not assume “unlocked” based on a listing title alone: look for an explicit statement in the offer and checkout terms, and ask the seller or carrier to confirm it in writing if unclear.

Confirm carrier and SIM compatibility before paying
Ask your carrier whether the exact iPhone model supports its network and whether your plan supports the phone’s eSIM or physical SIM setup. Compatibility and activation depend on the model, carrier, plan, and region. Apple notes that eSIM support depends on the carrier and plan; its U.S. instructions apply to eligible models and supported carriers, not every phone or service worldwide. Read the return, delivery, and warranty terms at checkout
Before submitting payment, find the terms that apply to this transaction—not just a general help page. Check the expected delivery window, the return deadline and process, who pays return shipping if specified, and which company provides the warranty. Make sure you know how to contact the seller if the phone does not match the offer.

Return rights, warranty coverage, shipping, taxes, and payment protections vary by seller and country. Apple’s policies do not establish that every third-party marketplace seller or listing is reliable, nor do they determine the terms of a separate seller’s offer.
Keep proof of purchase and order details
Save the receipt, invoice, order confirmation, listing details, and any seller communications. Apple recommends retaining the receipt; its guidance says a useful receipt identifies the device, purchase date, receipt or invoice number, price, and reseller contact details. If you are considering refurbished instead
Apple Certified Refurbished is a separate option, not a new iPhone. Apple says its refurbished products undergo functional testing and include a one-year limited warranty. Its U.S. refurbished page states savings of up to 15%; that is a maximum claim, not a guaranteed discount on a particular model or current listing. Check the current item, price, and terms on Apple’s Certified Refurbished iPhone page.

If the delivered phone appears used or belongs to someone else
For a phone sold as new that arrives already set up or does not match the offer, document its condition and contact the seller promptly through the written return route you saved. Apple’s guidance for pre-owned devices says not to take ownership of a used iPhone that remains linked to its previous owner; if an online purchase displays “iPhone Locked to Owner,” Apple says to return it. That advice specifically addresses pre-owned devices and purchases outside Apple or an Authorized Reseller, so use the seller’s terms for resolving a new-device order that arrives inconsistent with its description.
