For Wordle, the answer is not simply drawn at random each day under the New York Times’ editorial approach described in 2022. The original game reportedly scheduled answers from a list, but after the Times took over, editor Tracy Bennett described choosing and ordering answers with human judgment—balancing variety, difficulty, word meaning and timing. That account explains Wordle, not every daily word puzzle.
Is Wordle’s daily answer random?
It depends on the era. Reporting on the original Wordle said Josh Wardle had prepared roughly 2,300 possible answers and assigned them to different days at random. That describes the original schedule as reported in 2022, not the Times’ later method. The Washington Post’s 2022 account covered the original list and scheduling.

In November 2022, the New York Times said it was curating Wordle’s answer list and named Tracy Bennett as editor. Bennett told Ars Technica, “I’m still choosing words in a kind of arbitrary way, but also in a well-informed way.” Her description points to informed editorial choice, not a published formula that mechanically determines each day’s answer. Ars Technica’s interview is the source for her account.

Bennett described reviewing the list and arranging answers to create variety. Her criteria included the sound and meaning of words, how challenging a puzzle might feel, and whether an answer could be awkward or frustrating for players.

Variety across the week
She said she tried to avoid stretches dominated by the same kind of word—for example, several nouns in a row—or answers that all begin with the same letter. She also aimed to mix easier and harder puzzles across the week. That did not mean assigning a predictable difficulty level to each weekday.
Meaning, idiom and sensitivity
A word can have more than one meaning or carry a secondary association. Bennett said she researched word histories and etymologies when considering potentially unsavory, offensive or hurtful meanings. She also considered whether a word was idiomatic: a technically valid word can still feel unnatural as a daily answer.

Fairness and frustrating patterns
Some answer patterns leave players with several plausible possibilities, making a puzzle feel less satisfying. Bennett said she tried to avoid especially frustrating clusters, while describing her judgment about how many competing patterns were too many as experimental rather than statistically settled.
News and timing
Scheduling can also matter when an answer might look like a deliberate reaction to a news event. Bennett said timing was one consideration in deciding when a word should appear; this does not mean every answer is selected in response to current events.

Are the answer list and allowed guesses the same?
No. A report from November 2022 distinguished the curated set of possible answers from a larger dictionary of words players could enter as guesses. It also said that some simple plurals ending in S or ES could be accepted guesses without being eligible answers. These are rules reported at that time, not a verified description of the current lists. The New York Times’ 2022 explanation describes that distinction.
So a word being accepted when you type it does not prove it can be the solution. Guess validation and answer selection serve different purposes: the former defines what players may try; the latter determines what can be scheduled as the target.

What this tells us about other daily word games
Wordle’s documented history is a useful example, but it cannot establish how other puzzle publishers choose their answers. A game might use a shuffled schedule, an algorithm, an editor, or a combination; the available account does not verify the method for other named games.

What is known—and what is not
Bennett’s interview describes the Wordle process she used in 2022, including an early period when she said editing took an average of 30 minutes to an hour per day while building a list about a year ahead. That is a historical estimate, not a current measure of the team’s workload. The account does not establish the exact current answer list, its size, or whether the internal process has since changed. It also does not provide a universal formula or show how other daily puzzle games operate.
