These are separate controls: Photon changes the visual design, while horizontal tabs put the tab strip across the top.
Choose the classic visual design
- Open Floorp Hub. In Floorp 12, settings are gathered there; you can also open Floorp Hub from Firefox Settings.
- Select Tab & Appearance in the sidebar.
- Under Interface, select Photon. Floorp associates Photon with the Firefox 88-and-earlier design. The other listed designs include Proton, Lepton, Firefox UI Fix, and Fluerial. Floorp’s interface and themes guide documents the choices and their location.
Set the tabs across the top
In the same Tab & Appearance area, scroll to Tab Bar and choose horizontal. Floorp documents horizontal tabs as its default, classic layout, with tabs arranged across the window. This setting controls tab orientation, not the Photon appearance. See Floorp’s Tab Bar Layout guide.

Move or hide the tab strip
If by “classic” you mean the tab strip’s position rather than its appearance, use the Tab Bar position settings. Floorp lists options for the default position, hiding the tab bar, hiding both the tab bar and title bar, placing it below the navigation bar, or placing it at the bottom of the window. Most position options do not apply to vertical tabs.

What changed to vertical tabs in Floorp 12
Floorp’s earlier, separate vertical-tabs implementation is unavailable in Floorp 12 and later. Floorp’s documentation recommends Firefox’s native vertical tabs if you still want a vertical layout; that feature has a different location and behavior, so it is not a one-to-one restoration of Floorp’s former interface. The change is covered in the Floorp 12 Upgrade FAQ and v12.1.0 Stable Release Notes.

Use custom CSS only as an advanced option
Floorp permits CSS customization but does not officially support it. Its tab-layout documentation warns that custom CSS can conflict with built-in settings. Start with the design, orientation, and position controls above; see Floorp’s Advanced UI Customization guide for the CSS caveat. If a setting label differs, check the Floorp version, since menu wording can change.
