Reliable Claude API integrations do not blindly retry every failure. They classify the HTTP status and typed SDK exception, honor server timing, distinguish temporary throttling from a spend cap, smooth demand before it reaches the service, and make each retry safe to reconcile. Anthropic’s official SDKs already retry transient connection, rate-limit, and 5xx failures twice with exponential backoff, respecting retry-after when supplied, but production systems still need their own limiter, deadline, idempotency guard, and telemetry. The workflow below shows how to build those controls around synchronous calls, streaming responses, and Message Batches.

What should a Claude API error workflow do first?

Classify the failure before choosing a retry action. Capture the HTTP status, the API error type, the human-readable message, any details.error_code, and the request ID; use the SDK’s typed exception classes rather than matching text in an error message.

Use status and error type as a decision table

HTTP status Typical meaning Retry decision Immediate action
400 Malformed or invalid request Do not retry unchanged Validate the request schema, model name, parameters, tool definitions, and message structure.
401 Authentication failure Do not retry unchanged Check the API key, secret injection, environment, and key rotation.
402 Billing or account payment problem Do not retry Resolve the account or payment condition before sending more work.
403 Permission or policy denial Do not retry unchanged Verify organization access, model permissions, and endpoint policy.
404 Resource or endpoint not found Do not retry unchanged Correct the model, resource identifier, or API path.
409 Conflict Usually do not retry unchanged Resolve the conflicting operation or state transition; retry only after state has changed.
413 Request too large Do not retry unchanged Reduce payload size, remove unnecessary content, or move the workload to the appropriate asynchronous interface.
429 Rate limit or enforced spend limit Retry only when it is throttling Honor retry-after for throttling; stop and escalate when the response identifies an enforced spend limit.
500 Server-side failure Retry with bounded backoff Preserve the operation and retry within a finite budget.
504 Gateway timeout Retry cautiously Reconcile whether the request completed before issuing a duplicate side effect.
529 Temporary overload Retry with bounded backoff Back off and reduce pressure; do not turn simultaneous failures into a retry storm.

The status is only the first branch. A typed exception and the structured error fields can reveal a more precise condition, especially for 429 responses. Keep the original response body with the classification so an incident review can explain why a request was retried or rejected.

Which Claude API errors are safe to retry?

Retry transient connection failures, rate-limit throttling, HTTP 500, and HTTP 529 responses when the retry budget permits. Treat authentication, authorization, malformed-request, conflict, request-size, and billing failures as corrective work, not as transient outages.

Connection failures

A connection can fail before the service has accepted a request, or after the service has processed it but before your client receives the response. Retry the transport failure, but assign an operation ID and reconcile any non-idempotent side effect before applying a result twice.

Server and gateway failures

HTTP 500, 504, and 529 can clear without a code change. A 504 is especially ambiguous: the gateway timed out, but the upstream operation may have continued. Your worker should look up the operation’s state or use an application-level deduplication key before creating another external effect.

Validation and access failures

Repeating a 400, 401, 403, 404, 409, or 413 request unchanged consumes time without changing the cause. Route these errors to validation, credential, permission, resource, conflict-resolution, or payload-size handling and make the failure visible to the caller.

How do the official SDK retries work?

Anthropic’s official SDKs automatically retry transient failures such as connection errors, rate limits, and 5xx responses with exponential backoff twice by default. When the response includes retry-after, the SDK respects that server-provided delay.

That default is a safety net, not a complete reliability policy. A production service still needs a total deadline, a queue-level retry budget, structured logs for every attempt, and a rule for what happens when the SDK’s two retries are exhausted. Avoid stacking several uncoordinated retry loops—for example, an SDK retry inside an HTTP-client retry inside a job-queue retry—because their delays can multiply and create a burst after recovery.

Keep retry layers explicit

  • Let one layer own short transport retries, normally the SDK.
  • Let the worker or job queue own longer rescheduling and the overall operation deadline.
  • Pass the same operation ID through every layer so a final success or failure can be reconciled.
  • Record the SDK attempt number separately from the queue delivery count.

How can you tell a throttling 429 from a spend-cap 429?

Not every 429 is temporary throttling. A throttling response normally supplies retry-after; a spend-cap 429 has no retry-after and includes an enforced-spend-limit detail. Continue retrying only the former.

Throttling response

When retry-after is present, wait the specified number of seconds before the next attempt. Apply that delay to the shared limiter, not just to one worker, so a fleet of workers does not all wake and send simultaneously.

Enforced spend limit

Stop automatic retries when the structured error identifies an enforced spend limit. Mark the operation as blocked, notify the owner or billing workflow, and resume only after access is restored or the account tier changes. Repeatedly sending the same request cannot bypass this condition.

Why do requests fail even when my per-minute average is below the limit?

Claude rate limits use requests per minute (RPM), uncached input tokens per minute, and output tokens per minute. Anthropic describes the mechanism as a token bucket: capacity replenishes continuously, so a short burst can exhaust available capacity even when a one-minute average looks acceptable.

Model the three dimensions

  • RPM: count requests, including small requests that arrive together.
  • Input tokens per minute: account for uncached input tokens in the prompt and tool context.
  • Output tokens per minute: reserve capacity for the maximum or expected generated output, according to your workload policy.

Use the limits that apply to your organization and model class; tiers, model rows, and API-version behavior can change, so read the current account documentation when configuring production values.

Put one limiter in front of all workers

Create a shared limiter per organization and model class rather than one local counter per process. A distributed token-bucket implementation should reserve request, input-token, and output-token capacity before dispatch. If capacity is unavailable, queue the job or shed optional work instead of letting the API reject a burst.

reserve(operation):
  estimate input and output tokens
wait until request, input, and output buckets have capacity
  atomically reserve all three
  dispatch the request
  reconcile reservation with actual usage

Use a small randomized delay when many queued jobs become eligible at once. The goal is a smooth arrival rate, not merely a slower retry loop after the service has already returned 429.

How should a bounded retry policy be implemented?

Use server timing first, then capped exponential backoff with jitter, a maximum attempt count, and a total retry deadline. Keep that retry budget separate from the deadline promised to the end user.

  1. Classify the error. Retry only transient connection failures, throttling 429s, 500, 504, and 529. Route deterministic errors elsewhere.
  2. Honor retry-after. Parse the value and wait at least that long. Apply the wait to the shared limiter so other workers also reduce pressure.
  3. Fall back to backoff. If no server delay is supplied, increase the delay exponentially and add jitter. Cap both the individual delay and the total retry window.
  4. Check deadlines. If the next delay would cross the operation deadline, stop and return a classified failure rather than starting work that cannot finish.
  5. Reschedule deliberately. Queue-based jobs can be delayed for later processing; interactive calls should return a clear transient error when their user-visible deadline expires.
  6. Record every attempt. Include the selected delay, attempt number, and reason in telemetry before sleeping.

A practical policy might allow the SDK’s two automatic retries, then one worker-level reschedule within a fixed operation window. The exact numbers should follow your latency and availability objectives; never let an unbounded loop decide them at runtime.

How do you make a retry safe when the first request may have succeeded?

Retries are transport behavior; application-level idempotency is your responsibility. Preserve the original prompt and tool inputs, assign an operation ID before the first attempt, and make downstream side effects conditional on that ID.

Protect non-idempotent tools

  • Store a record keyed by operation ID before invoking a tool that charges, sends, mutates data, or triggers another service.
  • When a response is uncertain, query that record or the downstream system before performing the action again.
  • Persist the final Claude response and tool-result state so a queue redelivery can return the existing outcome.
  • Do not silently alter the prompt, tool arguments, or model between attempts; a changed operation is a new operation and needs a new identifier.

Anthropic’s retry semantics do not guarantee application-level idempotency. Your operation record, deduplication key, and reconciliation path provide that guarantee.

What should be logged for every Claude API attempt?

Instrument the attempt, not just the final job result. Persist the request ID from the response header and, when present, the request ID in the error body; keeping both supports support cases and correlation across proxies and workers.

  • Operation ID and queue or trace ID
  • Claude model and API operation
  • HTTP status, API error type, message classification, and details.error_code
  • Request ID from the header and error body
  • Attempt number, SDK retry count, queue delivery count, and selected delay
  • Start time, end time, network latency, total operation latency, and deadline remaining
  • Input and output token usage when a response reports it
  • Whether the response was streamed, completed, interrupted, or emitted a stream error
  • Limiter decisions, estimated tokens, and the reason work was queued or shed

Redact prompts, tool arguments that contain personal data, API keys, authorization headers, and other secrets. Keep a short diagnostic fingerprint—such as a prompt template version and payload size—so failures can be grouped without storing the entire request.

Which architecture is best for different workloads?

A direct call is adequate for short, low-volume requests. A shared queued worker is safer when traffic is bursty; streaming is better for long interactive responses; Message Batches fit asynchronous volume.

Design Best fit Strengths Risks and controls
Direct synchronous call Short interactive requests with predictable volume Lowest moving-part count and immediate response Local bursts and client timeouts; add bounded retries, a limiter, and operation reconciliation.
Queued worker with shared limiter Bursty traffic, many tenants, or background jobs Smooths RPM and token demand, supports rescheduling and load shedding Queue delay and duplicate delivery; persist operation state and enforce a total deadline.
Streaming response Long interactive generation where the user can consume partial output Reduces idle-connection risk and lets the interface render progress An error can arrive after an initial HTTP 200; handle stream error events and reconcile partial output.
Message Batches Asynchronous bulk processing Separates submission from completion and avoids holding many client connections open Not suitable for immediate answers; track batch state and individual result errors.

When should you use streaming or Message Batches?

For requests that may run longer than about 10 minutes, Anthropic recommends considering streaming or Message Batches. Streaming fits an interactive user waiting for incremental output; Message Batches fit work that can complete asynchronously.

Streaming workflow

  1. Open the stream with the same operation ID used by the request record.
  2. Process content events incrementally and persist enough state to resume or explain an interruption.
  3. Handle a stream error event separately from the initial HTTP status; a stream can begin after HTTP 200 and still fail later.
  4. Only mark the operation complete after the terminal event and any required tool side effects have been reconciled.

Batch workflow

  1. Validate each item and its estimated size before submission.
  2. Store the batch identifier and a mapping from each item to its operation ID.
  3. Poll or receive completion status through the batch mechanism rather than keeping a client connection open.
  4. Retry only failed, retryable items, not the entire batch, when the returned result allows item-level handling.

What request-size limits affect error handling?

Size errors are deterministic: shrinking or restructuring the payload is required before another attempt. The current documented maximums are different for each interface.

Interface Maximum request size Design implication
Messages API 32 MB Trim oversized prompts, tool schemas, and attachments before retrying.
Batch API 256 MB Split large asynchronous submissions into valid batches.
Files API 500 MB Upload large files through the file interface rather than embedding them in a Messages request.

Measure encoded payload size, not just the text length shown in an editor. Include tool definitions, metadata, and any serialized content in the preflight check.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do you troubleshoot a failing production workflow?

Start with one operation ID and its request IDs, then follow the branch that matches the structured error.

Many 429s during traffic spikes

  • Compare request, uncached-input-token, and output-token demand with the organization and model-class limits.
  • Check whether each process has its own limiter; replace per-process counters with a shared reservation service.
  • Inspect whether workers wake at the same backoff boundary; add jitter and queue release smoothing.
  • Confirm that the response is throttling rather than an enforced spend limit.

429s continue after waiting

  • Look for the absence of retry-after and an enforced-spend-limit detail.
  • Stop the retry loop and route the operation to billing or tier remediation.
  • Retain the request and error IDs so support can correlate the account condition.

Timeouts produce duplicate actions

  • Check whether the timeout occurred before or after the downstream tool was invoked.
  • Use the operation record and downstream idempotency key to reconcile before retrying.
  • Separate the user-facing deadline from the worker’s reconciliation window.

Streaming responses end unexpectedly

  • Inspect stream events after the initial HTTP 200, not only the initial response status.
  • Persist partial output and tool state so the user receives an honest incomplete result rather than a duplicated answer.
  • Retry only when the operation is safe to resume or reconcile.

What does a complete request lifecycle look like?

The following sequence keeps classification, limiting, retries, and observability in one control path.

  1. Create an operation ID and redactable diagnostic context.
  2. Estimate input and output tokens and reserve capacity in the shared organization/model limiter.
  3. Send the request through the official SDK, allowing its documented transient retries.
  4. Capture the response header request ID, error-body request ID, status, typed exception, token usage, and latency.
  5. If successful, persist the response and reconcile every tool side effect against the operation ID.
  6. If failed, classify the structured error. Correct deterministic failures; honor retry-after for throttling; use capped jittered backoff for eligible transient failures.
  7. Before each retry, verify the total deadline and deduplication record. Stop on an enforced spend limit or exhausted budget.
  8. For long-running work, choose streaming or Message Batches before the request begins rather than after repeated connection timeouts.
  9. Emit a final operation state—completed, permanently failed, deferred, or blocked by spend policy—so callers and operators do not infer state from a missing response.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a retry be issued after a client-side timeout?

Yes, but first treat the outcome as unknown rather than failed. Check the operation record or downstream side-effect store using the operation ID; only issue another Claude request when reconciliation shows that repeating the work is safe.

How should a service handle a malformed or missing retry-after value?

Do not wait forever or retry immediately in a tight loop. Record the malformed header, apply your bounded jittered backoff fallback, and keep the event visible for configuration or provider-support investigation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should separate customers share one Claude limiter?

The limiter should at least be shared across workers that draw from the same organization and model-class quota. Add tenant-level fairness or weighted queues on top so one customer cannot consume all available burst capacity.

What is the safest way to test failure handling without causing an outage?

Run tests against a controlled stub that returns each documented status and structured error shape, including a 429 with and without retry-after. Verify attempt counts, delays, redaction, operation reconciliation, and final states before exposing the policy to production traffic.
