Tasker can start an automation when your phone enters or leaves a defined place, then prepare the phone for a drive by enabling Android Car Mode, changing media or notification settings, setting a state variable, or sending a documented intent to another app. The location trigger is a circular geofence: a center latitude/longitude plus a radius. Reliable results depend on choosing a provider that fits the site, making the radius larger than the phone’s real-world error, and allowing Tasker to monitor in the background.

This approach does not give Tasker universal control of an Android Auto head unit. Android Auto exposes only the controls supported by the connected vehicle and the target app’s documented integrations. Use Tasker for phone-side preparation and send an intent only when the receiving app documents that action.

What can a location-based Tasker profile do for Android Auto?

A Tasker location context becomes active while the phone is inside a circular geographic area. You choose the center point and radius on the map; entering that area runs an Enter task, and leaving it can run an Exit task. The trigger is independent of whether Android Auto is currently connected, so it is useful for preparing the phone before a drive or restoring settings after you leave a regular parking location.

Typical phone-side actions include enabling Android Car Mode, adjusting media or notification volume, setting a variable that other profiles can read, or sending an intent to an app that publishes a compatible action. Tasker’s Car Mode action changes the Android Car Mode state; it does not promise that every control on an Android Auto vehicle display can be changed.

  • Prepare the phone: set a driving volume, enable a mode, or write a state variable such as %DRIVING=1.
  • Call a documented integration: use Tasker’s Send Intent action when the destination app specifies the action, broadcast, component, and any required extras.
  • Restore deliberately: an Exit task can return a volume or mode to the value you chose, rather than blindly toggling it.
  • Keep the boundary stable: use a radius that reflects the provider’s actual accuracy so the profile does not alternate between Enter and Exit.

Google describes Android Auto as a phone-to-vehicle connection for navigation, maps, messages, calls, and music. A location profile can prepare those phone conditions, but the vehicle interface remains subject to Android Auto, the vehicle, and each app’s supported integration.

How do I create the location trigger in Tasker?

Create a Profile with Location as its context, place the center at the site where the automation should become active, and choose a radius based on the location accuracy you actually observe. Save the context before attaching actions so you can test the boundary independently from the task.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the profile editor. In Tasker, create a new Profile and select Location as the context.
  2. Set the center. Move the map marker to the relevant place, such as the entrance to a garage, a driveway, or a work parking area. Tasker stores the center as latitude and longitude.
  3. Choose a radius. Start with a circle large enough to contain the provider’s normal error. Tasker’s guidance is that the radius should typically be about twice the observed accuracy.
  4. Save the context. Attach an Enter task when Tasker offers to create one. Add an Exit task later if settings need to be restored when the phone leaves the circle.
  5. Test without driving. Stand at several points inside and just outside the boundary, note the reported accuracy, and adjust the radius before adding more complicated actions.

A driveway-sized boundary is often unrealistic when the phone’s network fix can be off by kilometres. In that situation, enlarge the circle or use a more precise provider; shrinking the circle does not make an imprecise fix precise.

Which location provider should I use?

GPS generally gives the tightest outdoor boundary but consumes more power and can perform poorly indoors. Network location, including Wi-Fi-assisted fixes, is lighter on power and may work better inside buildings, but its error can vary substantially and it relies on usable cell, Wi-Fi, or other network data.

Provider Boundary precision Power use Indoor behavior Best fit Important limitation
GPS Usually the most precise when a clear outdoor fix is available Higher Weak in garages and other obstructed locations Outdoor arrival points where a tighter boundary matters May take longer to obtain a fix and can fail under roofs or around obstructions
Network Variable; can be much less precise than GPS Lower Can work indoors when cell or Wi-Fi data is available Large areas where battery savings matter more than exact driveway detection A fix may be off by a large distance, so a small radius can miss the event
Wi-Fi-assisted network Often better indoors when nearby access points are known Lower than continuous GPS Useful near stable, visible Wi-Fi networks Homes, offices, or garages with dependable nearby access points Accuracy depends on nearby Wi-Fi data and connectivity

Choose the provider for the physical trigger, not for a theoretical accuracy number. If the action must happen only after the car reaches an outdoor gate, GPS is usually the safer choice. If the action should cover an entire workplace or work inside a garage, network or Wi-Fi-assisted detection may be more practical.

How large should the geofence radius be?

Use the phone’s observed accuracy as the starting measurement and set the radius to roughly twice that value. For example, if the provider commonly reports an accuracy of about 100 metres at the site, a radius near 200 metres is a more realistic starting point than a 20-metre circle. This is a reliability rule, not a guarantee: accuracy changes with sky view, buildings, connectivity, and the provider.

When a small radius is appropriate

A smaller circle makes sense only when the phone consistently reports an error smaller than that circle and the trigger location has a clear signal environment. An outdoor entrance with a stable GPS fix is a better candidate than an underground garage. Test both sides of the boundary while stationary; if the status flips, enlarge the radius.

When to enlarge the circle

Increase the radius when the profile never activates, activates late, or repeatedly enters and exits while the phone is stationary. A network fix that is sometimes kilometres away requires a much larger area or a switch to GPS. If a large radius would include places where the action is unsafe or unwanted, move the center to a better-observed outdoor point instead of forcing an unrealistically small boundary.

How do I build Enter and Exit tasks that do not fight each other?

Make each task idempotent: applying it twice should leave the phone in the same state as applying it once. Explicitly setting a known value is safer than toggling a setting, because location readings can bounce around an edge.

Example profile design

Profile: Arrive at driving location
Context: Location (chosen center and radius)
Enter task:
  1. If %UIMODE is not car, enable Car Mode (optional)
  2. Set %DRIVING=1
  3. Send only an intent documented by the target app (optional)
Exit task:
  1. Set %DRIVING=0
  2. Restore any volume or mode changes you deliberately made

%UIMODE is a dynamic Tasker variable whose values include car and normal. Checking it before enabling Car Mode prevents a repeated mode change when the profile is evaluated more than once. The variable approach also lets other Tasker profiles check whether driving preparation has already happened.

Handle settings you need to restore

Record the change you intentionally make and reverse that change in the Exit task. For example, if Enter sets a driving media volume, Exit should restore the value you selected rather than simply decrementing or toggling volume. If several profiles can alter the same setting, use a shared state variable and define which profile owns restoration; otherwise one profile may undo another profile’s work.

Allow for boundary hysteresis

There is no benefit in placing the center exactly on a road line or garage threshold when the reported position can move by more than the radius. A sufficiently large circle, explicit state assignments, and a test near the edge reduce oscillation. Tasker’s profile monitoring and cooldown behavior can also affect how quickly repeated activations occur, so allow time between tests instead of driving back and forth across the boundary.

How can Tasker send an Android Auto action?

Use Tasker’s Send Intent action only with an action that the destination app documents. An intent is an inter-app message; it is not a universal Android Auto remote control. The receiving app may require a particular action string, broadcast type, extras, explicit component, or permission, and the vehicle display may still ignore a phone-side request that is outside its supported interface.

  1. Read the target app’s integration documentation. Identify whether it accepts an activity launch, a broadcast, or another intent form.
  2. Copy the exact action and extras. Preserve capitalization and data types. If the documentation names a package or receiver component, enter it instead of relying on an implicit broadcast.
  3. Configure Send Intent in the Enter task. Add only the fields the app specifies. Do not assume that an action used by one navigation, media, or messaging app exists in another.
  4. Test outside the location profile. Run the task manually while the phone is unlocked and observe whether the app receives it. This separates an intent problem from a geofence problem.
  5. Test with Android Auto connected. Confirm what changes on the phone and what appears in the vehicle. A successful phone-side intent does not prove that the head unit supports the resulting control.

Undocumented broadcasts are unsupported. They can change without notice, be blocked by Android’s background rules, or require a permission that Tasker does not have. When no documented intent exists, limit the automation to phone state changes such as Car Mode, volume, or a variable.

How do I keep the profile working with the screen off?

Background reliability is a combination of permission, monitoring, and manufacturer settings. Grant Tasker the location access required for monitoring while it is not visible, keep its foreground notification and reliable-alarm options enabled when appropriate, and review Android battery optimization. A phone can have location enabled and still stop Tasker if the operating system suspends or kills its background process.

Permission and monitoring checklist

  • Turn on the device’s location service.
  • Give Tasker the background location permission it requests for a profile that must run while the screen is off.
  • Allow Tasker to run in the background and keep its foreground notification enabled when reliable monitoring is needed.
  • Review Android’s battery-optimization settings and exempt Tasker when the device’s power policy is preventing checks.
  • If a plugin receives or sends the intent, apply the same background allowance to that plugin.

Manufacturer restrictions

Some vendors add autostart controls or aggressive task-killing beyond standard Android settings. Samsung, Xiaomi, Huawei, Lenovo, and other manufacturers may require a separate per-app exception for Tasker or its plugins. Look in the phone’s battery, background-activity, autostart, and recently-used-app settings; the labels differ by device and software version.

Why the screen-off delay is normal

Android may check location less often with the display off to save power. That can make an activation later than the moment you crossed the circle even when the profile is configured correctly. Reliable alarms and a foreground monitor can improve consistency, but they cannot create a location fix when the chosen provider has no usable signal.

What should I test before relying on the automation?

Test the location layer, the task layer, and the Android Auto layer separately. This avoids changing three variables at once and makes failures diagnosable.

  1. Measure the site. Note the provider in use and the accuracy shown at the intended trigger point, both outdoors and indoors if relevant.
  2. Verify Enter. Start outside the circle, cross into it, and confirm the task runs once. Repeat while stationary near the edge to expose bouncing.
  3. Verify Exit. Leave the circle and confirm that restoration occurs only for settings the Enter task changed.
  4. Repeat with the screen off. Lock the phone, wait through the normal monitoring interval, and record the delay rather than assuming an instant trigger.
  5. Test connectivity conditions. Try the network provider with weak data and the GPS provider under a roof. Choose the behavior that matches the real location.
  6. Test the intent independently. Run the Send Intent task manually, then test it with Android Auto connected. Confirm the destination app documents the action.
  7. Test after a reboot. Check that Tasker and any required plugin start automatically and retain the needed permissions.

Keep a simple record of the provider, reported accuracy, trigger delay, and whether the screen was on. Those observations are more useful for tuning the radius than a single map estimate.

Why does a location profile fail, and how do I fix it?

Symptom Likely cause Fix
Profile never activates Radius is smaller than the real fix error, location is disabled, or Tasker lacks background permission Compare the radius with observed accuracy, enlarge it or switch provider, enable location, and grant the required background access
Activation is late with the screen off Android reduces background checks or Tasker’s reliable monitoring is disabled Review display-off monitoring, reliable-alarm and foreground-notification settings, and battery optimization
GPS fails at home or in a garage Roofing and obstructions prevent a dependable GPS fix Use network or Wi-Fi-assisted detection, or move the GPS boundary to an outdoor point
Enter and Exit repeat near the edge Position error overlaps the boundary or tasks toggle settings Enlarge the radius, set explicit values, and test while stationary near the edge
Android Auto action does nothing Target app does not expose that intent, the receiver expects a different form, or a component or permission blocks it Verify the documented action, broadcast type, component, extras, and permissions; test the task manually
Tasker stops after a period of inactivity OEM battery, autostart, or task-killing policy terminated it Remove the manufacturer’s restriction for Tasker and relevant plugins

How should I design a safe driving workflow?

Use the location trigger for preparation, not for actions that require the driver to interact with a screen while moving. Keep Enter actions short and deterministic, and avoid launching an unexpected activity or changing a setting that could distract the driver. If the automation changes audio volume, test the resulting level before driving; if it sends a message-related intent, confirm exactly what the receiving app does before enabling it.

Separate preparation from vehicle control

Car Mode, a driving variable, or a documented app intent can prepare the phone before Android Auto starts. The vehicle’s head unit remains controlled by Android Auto and its supported apps. Treat any behavior that depends on an undocumented receiver as experimental and omit it from a workflow you need to trust.

Use conservative defaults

When location is unavailable, leave the phone in its normal state rather than guessing that the car has arrived. When an Exit event is missed, a later profile or a manual reset should still leave the phone usable. Explicit variables and reversible settings make recovery easier than chains of toggles.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can one profile cover several places?

A single circular context is best for one coherent area. If you need different behavior at home, work, and another parking location, create separate profiles or separate location contexts so each can have its own provider, radius, and Enter/Exit actions. Keep the tasks independent and use clearly named variables to prevent one site from restoring a setting changed by another.

For sites with poor GPS but dependable Wi-Fi, give that site a larger network-based circle or place the center at an outdoor approach. For a site where precise outdoor arrival matters, use GPS and accept the higher power cost. The correct design can therefore differ by location even on the same phone.

What are the practical limits of location-based Android Auto automation?

Location is an estimate, not a gate sensor. Provider accuracy changes, Android may defer checks to save power, and manufacturer software may stop background processes. A well-sized circle and correct permissions make the profile dependable enough for convenience tasks, but no configuration guarantees an exact trigger at a driveway line.

Tasker can control the parts of the phone and apps that expose supported actions. It cannot add an Android Auto feature that the vehicle, Android Auto, or the destination app does not publish. Build the workflow around documented controls, test it under the same indoor, outdoor, screen-off, and connectivity conditions in which you will use it, and keep a manual fallback for anything important.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Tasker need GPS enabled all the time for a location profile?

No. A profile can use network or Wi-Fi-assisted location when a broad, lower-power boundary is acceptable. GPS is preferable when the trigger must be tighter outdoors, but it is less dependable under roofs and generally costs more power.

Can a Tasker intent control every Android Auto button?

No. Send Intent only reaches an action that the receiving app documents and accepts. Android Auto and the vehicle still decide which app functions and head-unit controls are available.

Why does my profile work once and then stop after I restart the phone?

The phone may not restart Tasker or a required plugin automatically, or an OEM autostart and battery policy may terminate it. Check startup permissions and background exceptions after confirming that the location permission remains granted.

Is a very small radius better for detecting my driveway?

Only when the phone’s actual location error is smaller than that radius. If the provider can place the phone outside the circle while it is standing in the driveway, a larger radius or a different provider will produce more reliable activation.
