A “sub-1 ms API” is realistic only when the measurement covers in-process parsing and field extraction on a bounded HTML document. It is not the time required to download a page, rotate a proxy, execute JavaScript, queue a job, or write a lead to a database. Those stages normally dominate end-to-end latency.
Build the extractor as a pipeline: accept already-fetched HTML, decode it, parse malformed markup with a tolerant parser, extract fields with resilient selectors, normalize values, validate them, remove duplicates, and attach provenance. Then publish warm median, p95, and p99 timings for a stated input size, hardware, parser version, allocation policy, and sample count. Without those boundaries, “under 1 ms” is an untestable slogan rather than a useful performance result.

What does a “less than 1 ms” lead-extraction API actually measure?
The meaningful unit is structured lead extraction from inconsistent HTML, not page-download speed. A defensible claim starts at the point where the API receives an HTML byte string and ends when it has produced validated lead objects in memory. HTTP transport, DNS, TLS, proxy negotiation, browser rendering, queueing, retries, and database writes must be reported as separate stages.
Define the boundary in the API documentation and benchmark harness. For example, “parser latency” can mean the CPU time from parser invocation through selector execution for one 32 KB document, excluding socket reads and persistence. If the endpoint includes JSON serialization or request routing, say so. If it includes a network round trip, call it end-to-end latency instead; it is a different metric.

Why the boundary matters
- A warm in-process parse can be measured in microseconds or milliseconds, depending on document size and parser.
- Fetching a page adds DNS, connection, TLS, server response, transfer, and sometimes proxy delays.
- JavaScript-heavy pages may require a browser and rendering, which introduces a separate and much larger wait.
- Retries, queues, storage, and enrichment create tail latency even when parsing itself is fast.
The target is therefore an engineering budget for one stage. It should not be presented as the speed at which a complete lead is discovered on the public web.
Where does the time go in a production scraper?
Keep each stage observable so a fast parser does not hide a slow system. A useful pipeline records a timestamp and outcome for every boundary.

| Fetch | DNS, connection, TLS, server response and body transfer | Connect time, time to first byte, total transfer time |

| Rendering | JavaScript execution, DOM construction and waits for dynamic content | Render time and timeout rate |
| Parse and extract | Decode, tolerant tree construction, selectors and field mapping | Warm/cold median, p95 and p99 CPU time |
| Queue and retry | Scheduling, backoff and repeated attempts | Queue wait, attempts per URL and completion time |
| Storage | Validation, deduplication, serialization and database writes | Commit time, rejected records and write failures |
Large-scale measurements illustrate why this separation matters. AIMultiple reports a test that sent more than 600,000 requests to over 10,000 live domains, while a separate AIMultiple Research project crawled more than 30 million pages using more than 50 products from six web-data infrastructure companies. Those figures describe collection systems, not parser-only speed; they reinforce the need to measure fetch, coverage and reliability independently.
How should you parse malformed HTML without losing leads?
Use a parser that can recover from broken nesting and incomplete documents, then make extraction tolerant of layout changes. A strict XML-style parser may fail on the first missing closing tag; a recovery-oriented HTML parser can still expose useful text and links.
1. Decode bytes before building the tree
Keep the original response bytes for provenance, detect the declared character set, and decode with an explicit fallback policy. Record whether the declaration, HTTP header or fallback decided the encoding. Replacement characters can corrupt email addresses and company names, so validation should flag suspicious decoding rather than silently accepting it.
2. Parse for recovery, not just speed
Expect missing closing tags, invalid nesting, duplicated attributes, comments in unusual locations and fragments copied from a larger page. Test representative failures from your target domains. A parser that wins a synthetic benchmark but drops text in malformed pages is not faster in business terms because the lost leads require recrawling or manual repair.
3. Prefer resilient selectors
Use a selector cascade: stable attributes first, semantic elements and labels second, and carefully scoped text or link patterns last. Avoid a single absolute XPath that breaks when an unrelated container is inserted. Scope each candidate to a person or company card before reading its email, phone and domain so values from neighboring records are not mixed.

4. Handle script-heavy pages explicitly
Inspect the response for embedded JSON, server-rendered fragments and links to APIs. If the required fields exist only after JavaScript runs, a parser cannot create them from the initial HTML. Route those URLs to a rendering stage, cache the resulting DOM when permitted, and keep rendering time out of the parser benchmark.
Which parser is fastest for lead extraction?
Parser choice can change latency by an order of magnitude, but published numbers are workload-specific. The following averages come from one tested workload in The Art of Web Scraping benchmark; they are not universal guarantees and should not be treated as a promise for your pages.
| Implementation | Measured average | Approximate milliseconds | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Selectolax | 0.02 seconds | 20 ms | Fastest in that workload, still far above 1 ms |
| lxml.html | 0.09 seconds | 90 ms | Competitive recovery-oriented option in that test |
| Parsel | 0.09 seconds | 90 ms | Same reported average as lxml.html there |
| Beautiful Soup with html.parser | 1.27 seconds | 1,270 ms | Slower on that workload |
| Beautiful Soup with html5lib | 2.47 seconds | 2,470 ms | Slowest of the listed configurations |
The table demonstrates relative differences, not a choice you can make without testing. Input size, selector complexity, tree traversal, Python allocation, parser versions, CPU architecture and cache state can all change the result. A newer native parser may win on a narrow microbenchmark yet lose on malformed pages or when its output requires expensive normalization.
How do you benchmark a sub-millisecond claim?
Benchmark the exact extraction function in-process before adding HTTP or browser work. The parser-measurement principle is simple: start with CPU time per page using pages like the ones you actually crawl.
- Freeze the corpus. Save a diverse, legally obtained sample: clean pages, missing tags, broken nesting, different encodings, repeated cards, empty fields and script-heavy responses. Record byte size and a content hash for every fixture.
- Pin the environment. Record operating system, CPU model, core affinity, runtime version, parser and selector-library versions, compiler settings and memory limits. A result without hardware and versions cannot be reproduced.
- Separate cold and warm runs. Cold runs include import, initialization and first allocations. Warm runs discard startup effects after a documented warm-up count. Report both if startup matters to your deployment.
- Measure enough samples. Use repeated iterations for every fixture, randomize order to reduce thermal or cache bias, and retain individual timings rather than only an average.
- Use distributions. Publish median, p95 and p99, plus the fastest and slowest meaningful document sizes. A median below 1 ms is not a service-level promise if p99 is 8 ms.
- Track allocations and output size. Object creation, garbage collection and JSON serialization can dominate a tiny parse. Measure them separately or state that the claim excludes them.
- Verify correctness with the same run. Compare extracted fields against expected fixtures. A benchmark that returns quickly by skipping malformed cards is invalid.
Report the boundary in one sentence beside every headline number: for example, “warm CPU time for parsing and field extraction on 8–32 KB fixtures, excluding network, serialization and storage.”
How should lead fields be normalized and validated?
Extraction produces candidates; normalization turns them into comparable records. Keep both the raw value and the normalized value when an audit trail matters.
Trim surrounding whitespace, remove obvious HTML entities, apply Unicode normalization and lowercase the domain. Validate syntax conservatively, reject values containing spaces or control characters, and mark role addresses or disposable domains according to your policy rather than deleting them silently. A syntactically valid address is not proof that the mailbox exists.

Company and person names
Collapse repeated whitespace while preserving the displayed form. Store a normalized comparison key separately so punctuation and case differences do not create duplicates. Do not strip legal suffixes unless your matching rules explicitly account for them.
Phone numbers and domains
Retain the original text, infer a country only when the page or crawl target supplies one, and normalize to a documented international format. For domains, lowercase the host, remove a terminal dot and separate the registrable domain from a subdomain. Never infer ownership from a domain string alone.
Evidence and confidence
Store the source URL, extraction timestamp, selector or rule identifier, parser version and schema version with each record. A confidence field can distinguish an email found in a labeled contact element from one found in unstructured body text. This makes later rule changes auditable instead of silently rewriting history.
How do you deduplicate leads safely?
Deduplication should combine deterministic keys with cautious similarity checks. Start with an exact normalized email when present. Otherwise combine normalized domain, company name, person name and phone, recording which fields formed the match.
- Keep a stable record identifier independent of the page URL.
- Prefer the newest observation while retaining earlier source URLs and timestamps.
- Do not merge two people merely because they share a company domain.
- Send ambiguous matches to a review queue instead of forcing a merge.
- Version the matching rules so a future change can be replayed.
Track duplicate rate and conflict rate by domain. A sudden increase can indicate a selector regression, a site redesign or an encoding problem rather than a successful optimization.
How do you separate parser latency from network and browser latency?
Use two tests with the same fixtures. The first invokes the parser and extractor directly on in-memory bytes. The second exercises the complete service, including request handling, fetch, proxy, rendering and persistence. Subtracting averages is not enough because these stages have different and often heavy-tailed distributions; retain per-stage timings and correlate them by URL.
For dynamic sites, record whether a response was static HTML, embedded data or browser-rendered DOM. A cached rendered document can make parsing look fast while hiding the render cost paid earlier. Conversely, measuring only a browser page-load timer can make a highly optimized parser appear slow. Name the stage in dashboards, alerts and service-level objectives.

What production design keeps a fast extractor reliable?
Put parsing behind a bounded worker pool and apply backpressure before memory fills. Queue fetch jobs separately from CPU-bound extraction so a slow domain does not block clean pages. Use per-domain rate limits, retry budgets and idempotent writes; retries should not create duplicate leads.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsInstrument success, timeout, malformed-document, decoding-error and validation-rejection counts. Keep a sample of failed HTML where policy permits, redact sensitive values, and retain the rule and parser versions that produced each record. Coverage and reliability belong beside speed: a parser that is 20 percent faster but misses contact cards or fails on a major domain is a worse extractor.
Cost also extends beyond CPU. Include proxy traffic, browser workers, queue capacity, storage, observability and engineering time in the system budget. Large collection evaluations show why vendor or infrastructure comparisons must consider enterprise coverage and failure behavior, not just a single throughput figure.
What can go wrong, and how do you fix it?
The benchmark is below 1 ms but the API is slow
Check request routing, JSON encoding, network transfer, queue wait and database commits. Publish the parser figure as an internal stage and set a separate end-to-end target.

How should you choose an implementation?
Choose the simplest parser that meets your correctness and latency requirements on representative pages. A practical decision sequence is:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Reject any implementation that cannot recover the malformed structures your domains use.
- Measure complete field extraction, not tree construction alone.
- Compare warm and cold median, p95 and p99 on fixed fixtures.
- Check normalization, duplicate handling, provenance and schema-version support.
- Load-test fetch, rendering, queue and storage stages separately.
- Set a cost and reliability budget before trading a small CPU gain for more complex infrastructure.
The published benchmark makes Selectolax look fastest among its listed configurations, while lxml.html and Parsel are much faster than the two Beautiful Soup configurations in that workload. None of those averages establishes a universal sub-millisecond result. Your own corpus and correctness checks decide the winner.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can an API return a lead in under 1 millisecond over the public internet?
Usually not as an end-to-end promise. Internet routing, TLS, server response time, transfer, proxy work and storage are outside parser CPU time and can vary by orders of magnitude. Reserve the sub-millisecond target for a clearly defined in-process stage unless you have controlled network conditions.
Should I use a browser for every page that contains contact information?
No. First inspect the raw response for server-rendered markup or embedded data. Use browser rendering only for fields that genuinely appear after JavaScript executes, and record that rendering stage separately so it does not distort parser measurements.
How large should the HTML fixture corpus be?
There is no universal count; it should represent the domains, sizes, encodings and failure patterns you expect in production. Include hand-labeled expected fields and keep the corpus versioned so a parser upgrade can be compared with the same inputs.
