You can build a Pebble app with an AI coding tool using either CloudPebble or the local Pebble SDK. CloudPebble is the quickest way to start; a local project is better if you want your files in your usual editor and command-line control. In either case, choose a project type and target platform that match the watch, build and check the app in the matching emulator, then install it through the Pebble mobile app’s Developer Connection for a real-device test.

You do not need a physical watch to begin coding or run an emulator, but you do need a compatible, paired watch to confirm behavior that depends on its hardware, Bluetooth connection, or phone-side runtime.

Which Pebble development route should I choose?

Choose CloudPebble if you want to create, edit, compile, and run a project without setting up a local toolchain. Choose the local SDK if you want project files on your computer, prefer your normal code editor, or want to use an AI coding agent alongside the command line.

What matters CloudPebble Local SDK and CLI
Getting started Lower setup effort: create a project in the browser and use its editor and emulator workflow. Install the command-line tool, an SDK, and any required system dependencies.
AI and editor workflow Useful for browser-based editing; the platform also provides an on-device installation flow. Works naturally with local files and an AI agent in a normal editor. The project generator has an AI option that creates agent instruction files.
Files and commands Project work happens in the CloudPebble environment. Project files are local; build and install operations can be run from a terminal.
Emulator Emulator is available through the CloudPebble workflow. Launch an emulator for a selected platform using the CLI.
Physical-watch install Use CloudPebble’s on-device installation flow through the Pebble mobile app. Connect through the mobile app’s Developer Connection, then install with the CLI.

Choose CloudPebble for the least setup

Create a project, select its project type and target platform, edit the app, compile it, and launch the emulator. This is a sensible first choice if you are learning Pebble development or want to validate an idea before installing tools locally. Its available project types and targets can vary, so check the settings for the specific watch you intend to support.

The browser route is particularly convenient when you are still deciding what to build: you can get to a project and emulator without first installing a local compiler toolchain. It also offers a path to install the project on a device through the Pebble mobile app. If you later want more control over files or want an agent to work in your normal editor, the local route may fit better.

Choose the local SDK for an AI-assisted editor workflow

A local project gives an AI agent access to the project files in your editor and lets you build, install, and inspect logs with commands. The trade-off is setup: the documented local toolchain has Python and operating-system requirements, and Windows users need WSL because the SDK does not run natively on Windows.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The local route also makes it easier to see exactly which files changed and to keep project work alongside your other code. In return, you are responsible for installing the CLI, an SDK, and any required runtime dependencies. If you only want to try a small watchface or app idea, CloudPebble minimizes that initial setup; if repeatable terminal commands and local agent access matter more, use the CLI.

How should I use an AI coding agent to start the project?

Ask the agent to scaffold a project for a named Pebble platform, describe the screen and button behavior you want, and require it to build and test the result. Treat generated code as a draft: an agent can help implement the app, but it does not guarantee that the project targets the right watch or that the app behaves correctly.

Scaffold locally with the AI option

The local setup guide documents this project-creation command:

pebble new-project --ai myproject

The AI option generates instruction files for Claude Code and Cursor. Pebble’s developer documentation also provides Markdown versions of its pages for agents, and its developer homepage offers a “Build with an AI Agent” entry point. These features give the agent project-specific context; they are not a substitute for checking the current platform documentation or running the build.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Give the agent a bounded implementation brief

Before asking it to write code, specify the target watch platform, the purpose of the app, the display content, and what each available button should do. Tell it to follow current Pebble documentation, keep changes small, build the project, and report any unsupported APIs or unresolved errors rather than silently inventing a workaround.

For example, a useful brief could say: “Create a Pebble app for the target platform I selected. Show a single status value and a short label. Use the available buttons to move between two screens. Follow the current Pebble documentation, avoid unsupported hardware features, and run the build before you finish.” Replace the example behavior with your own requirements; the target platform must be explicit because display, input, and feature support differ across watches.

If the idea is a watchface rather than an app, say so in the brief and define what information should be visible at a glance. Give the agent a concrete layout and interaction goal rather than asking for a generic “Pebble app.” For either kind of project, identify any hardware or phone-connected feature up front so the agent can check whether the selected target supports it.

Review the generated work instead of accepting it on trust

  • Check that the project type and target platform are the ones you chose.
  • Read the files the agent added or changed, especially project configuration and code that handles button events or hardware access.
  • Ask the agent to explain unfamiliar APIs and identify any assumptions it made.
  • Build after each meaningful change, so an error is easier to connect to the edit that caused it.

Keep the first version narrow. A small screen with a clear purpose is easier to inspect in the emulator and easier to diagnose if a build or interaction fails. Once the basic project builds and its main screen and controls behave as intended, add features in small steps and rebuild. This is a practical way to use an agent without treating its output as a finished, verified app.

Which Pebble SDK and project type should I use?

The Pebble C SDK is the broad platform route: CloudPebble documents it as the primary project type and says it builds for every platform. The JavaScript SDK is a beta option based on Alloy and Moddable; CloudPebble’s current project settings offer it only for Pebble Time 2 (emery) and Pebble Round 2 (gabbro).

Project type Language or basis Documented platform availability Best fit
Pebble C SDK C CloudPebble identifies it as building for every platform. When broad platform coverage is the priority or you want the primary documented project type.
JavaScript SDK (beta) JavaScript, based on Alloy and Moddable CloudPebble project settings currently list emery (Pebble Time 2) and gabbro (Pebble Round 2) only. When you prefer JavaScript and your target is one of those listed platforms.

Do not assume that a project that compiles for one platform will work unchanged on another. A watch’s display, buttons, and available features shape what the app can do. Confirm the target model and check the hardware information for that platform before relying on a particular API or capability.

In practice, choose based on both language preference and platform coverage. If you need the broad documented platform route, start with C. If you want to use the beta JavaScript path, first confirm that the target is emery or gabbro in CloudPebble’s project settings. Being able to write JavaScript is not by itself a reason to choose that path if the intended watch is not among the listed targets.

This guide is about watch apps and watchfaces built with the Pebble SDK. Changing or developing PebbleOS firmware is a separate, substantially more advanced task; it is not required to create an ordinary app or watchface.

How do I install the local SDK and build the app?

For a local project, install the Pebble command-line tool, install the latest SDK, create a project, and build it. The documented setup uses Python 3.10–3.13; follow the official operating-system-specific installation guidance for macOS, Ubuntu, Fedora, or Windows through WSL.

  1. Install the CLI: run uv tool install pebble-tool in an environment that meets the documented Python requirement.
  2. Install the latest SDK: run pebble sdk install latest.
  3. Create a project: run pebble new-project for the standard project setup, or use pebble new-project --ai myproject to generate AI-agent instruction files as well.
  4. Set the intended project type and platform: check the project configuration and confirm that they match the watch you want to support.
  5. Build: from the project directory, run pebble build. Resolve build errors before moving to emulator testing.

The installation guide covers macOS, Ubuntu, Fedora, and Windows via WSL. It does not document native Windows SDK support. On Linux, emulator startup also depends on system libraries; the guide specifies glibc 2.38 or newer and points Ubuntu users to version 24.04 or newer where relevant.

Keep the tool and SDK version numbers straight while setting up. The local guide says the package’s sdkVersion remains "3" even when you install SDK 4.x. That package setting is not a command to install SDK 3, and it is not the same version field as the installed SDK. Likewise, pebble-tool 5.x is the CLI version, not another way of writing SDK 4.x.

If you are on Windows, plan on using WSL rather than trying to install the SDK natively. For Python, use a version in the documented 3.10–3.13 range; the setup guide does not yet support Python 3.14. Checking these prerequisites before installing can prevent confusing failures that have nothing to do with the app code.

How do I run the app in the Pebble emulator?

Install the app to an emulator that matches the project’s target platform, then check the layout, button interactions, logs, and supported behavior. The emulator is a fast, repeatable development check, not a complete reproduction of the watch: it simplifies hardware below the platform level.

  1. Build the project: run pebble build and confirm that the build succeeds.
  2. Choose the matching platform: use the platform name for your intended watch. The documented example is basalt, but that is not a universal target.
  3. Install and launch: use pebble install --emulator <platform>. For example, the documented command is pebble install --emulator basalt when basalt is the actual target.
  4. Exercise the app: inspect screen fit and text, press the available buttons, move between screens, and check output for errors or unexpected behavior.

CloudPebble also supports an emulator workflow. Whichever route you use, test on the matching platform rather than treating one emulator model as a stand-in for every Pebble watch. If the app depends on actual sensors, Bluetooth, or the phone-side runtime, make a separate pass on a physical watch.

  • 24/7 HEALTH MONITORING: The Amazfit Bip 6 smartwatch provides precise, real-time monitoring of heart rate, sleep, blood-oxygen and stress, empowering you with actionable insights to optimize your health and fitness.

Use the emulator for what it does well: quick iterations on screen layout, interaction flow, and platform-supported behavior. Try each visible state, not just the opening screen. Check that text fits, that the controls reach the expected screen or action, and that the run does not produce unexpected output. A successful compile only says the project built; it does not confirm that the interface feels right or that every feature works.

The emulator also has a clear limit: it models the target platform but simplifies hardware underneath it. That makes it useful for repeatable development checks, not a replacement for the physical watch when an app relies on actual hardware, a Bluetooth connection, or the phone-side runtime. If you do not own a compatible watch, you can still code and use the emulator, but you cannot complete those device-specific checks yourself.

How do I install and test the app on a physical Pebble watch?

For a local project, connect through the Pebble mobile app’s Developer Connection and install with the CLI. CloudPebble provides its own on-device installation flow through the Pebble mobile app. The watch must be paired and connected through the supported app workflow for the installation route you choose.

Connect the local CLI through CloudPebble

  1. In the Pebble mobile app, enable Developer Connection.
  2. Sign in on your computer with the same Pebble account used in the mobile app.
  3. In the terminal, run pebble login.
  4. Install the project using pebble install --cloudpebble.

The CLI also documents a local-network connection route using the phone’s IP address when that option is enabled. Use the connection method supported by your setup; do not assume a watch can be reached directly from the computer without the phone app’s connection flow.

Before starting, make sure the watch you will use is the model or platform you intend to support and is connected through the Pebble app. The physical-watch step is not merely another way to launch the emulator: it exercises the actual device and the supported phone connection path. A compatible watch is needed for that final validation, though it is not required for initial coding or emulator work.

Make a real-device test pass

Use a watch that matches the project’s intended platform, and check the parts the emulator cannot fully establish:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Does the app launch and display correctly on the physical screen?
  • Do the buttons produce the expected actions?
  • Does behavior that depends on a sensor or other watch hardware work on that model?
  • If the app exchanges information with the phone, does that interaction work through the connected mobile app?
  • Does the app remain usable during the actual launch and connection flow you expect users to follow?

These are recommended checks for your app, not a claim that any particular project has passed them. A successful emulator run cannot prove that device-specific or phone-connected behavior is correct.

For a simple app or watchface that uses only a display and button input, the on-watch pass still verifies fit and interaction on the real screen and controls. For an app that uses a sensor or communicates with the phone, focus the device test on those dependencies as well. Do not claim that those features work based only on an emulator run.

How do I diagnose build, emulator, or installation problems?

Start by separating the failure into build, emulator, or connection/install. Use the CLI’s verbose installation mode and pebble logs to gather more detail; if the emulator’s stored state is behaving strangely, pebble wipe clears that state.

The build fails

  • Confirm that the command is running from the project directory and that the project type and target platform are set as intended.
  • Read the first actionable error in the build output, then correct that issue and run pebble build again.
  • Check that the installed SDK is the one you intend to use. Run pebble sdk list to inspect installed SDKs and pebble sdk activate VERSION to switch to an installed version.

The emulator does not start or behaves unexpectedly

  • Verify that the emulator platform matches the project target.
  • On Linux, check the documented runtime dependency: glibc 2.38 or newer. Ubuntu users should consult the guide’s 24.04-or-newer direction where relevant.
  • If the emulator appears to retain bad state, use pebble wipe to clear its stored emulator state, then install and test again.

The watch is not reachable

  • Confirm that the watch is paired and connected in the Pebble mobile app.
  • For the CloudPebble connection flow, verify Developer Connection is enabled and that the computer is signed in with the same Pebble account.
  • For a LAN connection, make sure the option is enabled and use the phone IP required by the documented CLI route.
  • Retry with verbose installation output and inspect pebble logs for useful error details.

When switching between installed SDK versions, inspect the available versions with pebble sdk list and activate the one your project needs using pebble sdk activate VERSION. This is more reliable than guessing from the CLI version number. If a problem appears only in the emulator, first confirm the platform selection and then consider clearing stored emulator state with pebble wipe.

What should I check before calling the app ready?

“Ready” means more than a successful compile. Use the emulator for rapid iteration, then verify the use cases that matter on the physical target watch.

  • Target: the project type and platform match the model you intend to support.
  • Build: pebble build completes successfully after the final code change.
  • Emulator: the screen and button flows have been exercised on the matching platform.
  • Device: installation, app launch, and any hardware- or phone-dependent features have been checked on a paired watch.
  • Agent changes: you understand the generated code well enough to maintain it and have reviewed its assumptions.

A useful sequence is to settle on the target and project type first, build a small first version, exercise it in the matching emulator, and then install it on the watch for the checks only real hardware and connectivity can provide. If you change the target platform or add hardware-dependent behavior, revisit the relevant checks rather than relying on a previous emulator pass.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the app’s sdkVersion need to change to 4 when I install SDK 4.x?

No. The local guide says the package’s sdkVersion remains "3" even when using SDK 4.x. That package field is not the same thing as the installed SDK’s version.

Is pebble-tool 5.x the same version as Pebble SDK 4.x?

No. They are separate version numbers: pebble-tool is the command-line tool, while SDK 4.x identifies the SDK. Check installed SDKs with pebble sdk list rather than inferring the SDK version from the CLI version.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I use Python 3.14 to install the local Pebble toolchain?

The documented support range is Python 3.10–3.13; Python 3.14 is not yet supported by that setup guide. Use a supported Python version for the documented installation path.

Do I need a Pebble watch to start building an app?

No. You can create and build a project and use CloudPebble or the local emulator without a physical watch. A compatible paired watch is needed for the final checks involving actual hardware, Bluetooth, or phone-side behavior.

Can I install the Pebble SDK natively on Windows?

The documented setup does not support native Windows SDK installation. Windows users need to use WSL and follow the Windows-through-WSL setup guidance.

Can I use the JavaScript SDK for any Pebble model?

No. The JavaScript SDK is a beta path, and CloudPebble’s current project settings list it for Pebble Time 2 (emery) and Pebble Round 2 (gabbro) only. Check the target platform before choosing it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is an emulator test enough to verify my app?

It is a useful development check for layout, button flows, logs, and supported platform behavior, but it simplifies hardware below the platform level. Test on a physical watch when behavior depends on real hardware, Bluetooth, or the phone-side runtime.

The Bottom Line

Start with CloudPebble for the least setup or the local SDK for local files and an AI-assisted editor workflow. Pick the project type and platform to match your target, build and test in its emulator, then install through the Pebble mobile app for a physical-device check. Treat AI output and emulator results as useful steps—not proof that the app works on every watch.
