You can build a capable home alarm workflow in Home Assistant by combining an alarm_control_panel entity with door and window contacts, motion sensors, a siren, and automations for arming, disarming, alerts, and camera recording. The panel is the stateful control layer; sensors detect events, while sirens and notifications deliver the response. A reliable setup also requires deliberate mode design, PIN handling where supported, entry and exit delays, and full-chain testing before you trust it.

This guide shows how to choose compatible hardware, create away and night modes, arm when the last person leaves, disarm on arrival, react to a triggered alarm, and test failure cases such as an unavailable coordinator or phone.

What does a Home Assistant alarm system consist of?

Home Assistant does not turn every binary sensor into an alarm by itself. An alarm-control-panel integration or component provides the alarm entity and its state machine; your contacts, motion detectors, siren, notifications, and cameras attach to that controller through automations.

Layer Typical Home Assistant entity Purpose
Control alarm_control_panel Arms, disarms, and triggers the security system while exposing states such as armed away, armed home, pending, and triggered.
Perimeter detection binary_sensor Reports whether a protected door or window is open or closed.
Interior detection binary_sensor Reports motion in rooms and circulation areas.
Audible response siren Produces the local alarm sound; compatible warning-device actions may also control a strobe, tone, level, and duration.
Remote response Notification service Sends an urgent message to an authorized phone or other destination.
Verification camera Starts recording or supplies live context after an alarm event.

Commercial-system integrations can expose several of these entities together, including alarm panel, entry, motion, smoke/CO, and siren entities. A do-it-yourself build can use a compatible alarm component and separate sensors instead.

  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Which sensors and siren should you use?

Start with door and window contacts, then add motion sensors to cover interior paths. Select every device by its Home Assistant entity behavior and by how it behaves when the network, coordinator, or power is unavailable—not merely by its radio protocol.

Door and window contacts

A contact should expose a binary sensor that changes state when the protected opening is opened. Put contacts on the main entry door, secondary exterior doors, accessible windows, and any interior door that represents a meaningful boundary. Label entities by location, such as binary_sensor.front_door, so automations and notifications identify the exact opening.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Motion sensors

Use motion detectors for rooms an intruder must cross, stairways, and approaches to protected doors. In away mode, interior motion can be active throughout the house. In home or night mode, exclude bedrooms or other areas where occupants are expected to move, or use the integration’s bypass capability when it provides one.

Smoke and carbon-monoxide detectors

Smoke and CO devices can be safety inputs and can initiate a triggered response, but life-safety equipment must still be installed and configured according to local code and the manufacturer’s instructions. Do not treat a Home Assistant automation as a replacement for code-compliant detectors.

Siren and optional strobe

Choose a siren entity that Home Assistant can control. Zigbee warning devices supported through ZHA can expose sound, strobe, level, and duration controls. Confirm the device’s supported command set before writing an automation; some sirens accept only on and off while others expose richer warning-device actions.

Protocol and integration checklist

  • Protocol: Compare Zigbee, Z-Wave, and Wi-Fi according to the coordinator or hub already used in your installation.
  • Local versus cloud operation: Prefer a documented local path for functions that must continue during an internet outage, and identify any cloud-dependent notifications or cameras.
  • Power and battery reporting: Make sure low-battery entities are available and include them in maintenance checks.
  • Coordinator compatibility: Verify that the sensor profile is supported by your Zigbee or Z-Wave coordinator and its Home Assistant integration.
  • Alarm features: Confirm support for the modes you need, PIN-protected disarming, entry and exit delays, and sensor bypass.
  • Response behavior: Check siren tone, strobe, level, duration, notification latency, camera integration, and behavior after a restart or lost connection.

How do you install the alarm foundation?

Build the system in layers so that each device can be tested before an automation depends on it.

  1. Install Home Assistant. Complete the base installation, updates, backups, and user accounts before adding security logic.
  2. Add the radio coordinator or hub. Pair the Zigbee or Z-Wave coordinator with the integration that supports your devices. For Wi-Fi devices, confirm that the device integration exposes entities locally or document its cloud dependency.
  3. Pair and name each sensor. Give contacts, motions, smoke/CO detectors, and the siren stable names based on location. Verify that opening a door changes its binary sensor to on and closing it returns it to off; verify motion changes in the same way.
  4. Add the alarm panel. Install a compatible alarm component or integration and confirm that an alarm_control_panel entity appears. Record which states and services it supports rather than assuming every panel offers every mode.
  5. Configure delays and PIN rules. If the integration supports arming or entry delays, set values that give occupants enough time to leave and disarm. Store a required PIN securely and pass it only to the disarm action that needs it.
  6. Add the siren and notification target. Test the siren manually at a safe volume and select an authorized phone notification service. Add cameras only after their recording action works independently.
  7. Create a backup and a maintenance reminder. Keep a current Home Assistant backup and schedule checks for low batteries, unavailable entities, and coordinator health.

What do Home Assistant alarm modes mean?

Modes determine which sensors are expected to be active and how the panel transitions between normal and alarm states. The exact options depend on the integration.

State or mode Use Design implication
Disarmed No alarm response is active. Perimeter and motion events should not start the intrusion siren unless a separate safety automation calls for it.
Armed away Nobody should be inside. Use perimeter contacts and interior motion coverage.
Armed home People are home. Keep perimeter protection while allowing ordinary movement in selected rooms.
Armed night People are sleeping. Protect exterior openings and leave expected bedroom movement excluded or bypassed when supported.
Armed vacation An extended absence. Use only if the integration defines this mode and your sensor plan covers the unoccupied home.
Armed custom bypass A user-defined subset of protection. Use only when you understand which zones are bypassed; a bypassed opening cannot provide the same protection.
Arming The panel is counting down or preparing to arm. Allow occupants to leave before the final armed state.
Pending An entry or exit delay is in progress. Give an authorized person time to disarm before the alarm becomes triggered.
Triggered The alarm condition is active. Start the siren, urgent notifications, lights, and camera recording response.

How do you arm the alarm when the last person leaves?

Trigger on people leaving the home zone, verify that nobody remains, then call alarm_control_panel.alarm_arm_away. The zone check prevents an individual departure from arming the house while another authorized person is still inside.

alias: Arm away when the last person leaves
triggers:
  - trigger: state
    entity_id:
      - person.alex
      - person.jordan

conditions:
  - condition: state
    entity_id: zone.home
    state: '0'
actions:
  - action: alarm_control_panel.alarm_arm_away
    target:
      entity_id: alarm_control_panel.house
mode: single

Replace the example person and panel entities with yours. If the integration supports an exit delay, the panel should enter its arming state before becoming armed away. Test the case where one person leaves and another remains; the condition should block arming.

How do you disarm the alarm when someone arrives home?

Use an authorized person’s arrival as the trigger, check that the panel is armed, and call alarm_control_panel.alarm_disarm. When the panel requires a PIN, pass it in data.code; do not assume that every integration accepts or requires one.

      entity_id: alarm_control_panel.house

An arrival trigger can run before a person reaches the door, depending on location accuracy. If that is unsafe for your layout, require a door event, a keypad action, or a deliberate confirmation in addition to presence. Keep a manual disarm method available for a dead phone or an incorrect presence state.

How do you arm a night mode without trapping occupants?

Call alarm_control_panel.alarm_arm_night at bedtime, but first decide which rooms may still have movement. A time trigger is simple; a household routine, dashboard button, or voice action can be safer when bedtime varies.

mode: single

Do not enable a motion zone that occupants must cross after arming unless that zone is intentionally part of night protection. Where supported, configure a bypass for expected bedroom movement and verify the panel reports the resulting mode.

How do you trigger the siren, phone alert, and cameras?

Use the alarm panel’s triggered transition as the central response trigger. Home Assistant’s alarm-triggered trigger fires when the panel enters triggered; one automation can then start the siren, send urgent notifications, flash lights, and start camera recording.

  - action: camera.record
    target:
      entity_id:
        - camera.front_door
        - camera.hallway
mode: single

Use the siren integration’s documented sound, strobe, level, and duration fields when available. If the siren supports a finite duration, choose one that is loud enough to alert occupants without creating an endless alarm after a false trigger. Include the triggering zone in notifications by using a separate automation per sensor or by constructing the message from the event data exposed by your integration.

How do you trigger an alarm from a panic button or smoke detector?

A binary sensor can call alarm_control_panel.alarm_trigger. For smoke-triggered behavior, gate the action so it does not repeatedly trigger an already disarmed panel unless that is your deliberate safety design.

alias: Trigger alarm from smoke sensor
triggers:
  - trigger: state
    entity_id: binary_sensor.kitchen_smoke
    to: 'on'
conditions:
  - condition: not
    conditions:
      - condition: state
        entity_id: alarm_control_panel.house
        state: disarmed
actions:
  - action: alarm_control_panel.alarm_trigger
    target:
      entity_id: alarm_control_panel.house
mode: single

The exact safety policy is yours: some households want smoke detection to sound the siren even when intrusion protection is disarmed, while others keep separate life-safety notifications. Follow detector and local-code requirements, and test the chosen behavior without creating a real emergency.

How should you test the complete alarm chain?

Test individual entities first, then the full sequence. Home Assistant provides a Trigger alarm action under Settings > Tools > Actions; use it to verify the response and disarm the panel after the test.

What can fail, and how do you recover?

The alarm panel entity is missing

Confirm that the selected integration actually provides an alarm_control_panel entity and that setup completed successfully. A collection of contacts and motions without a panel cannot execute the alarm services.

A sensor never changes state

Check pairing, battery level, coordinator range, and the entity’s device class. Re-pair only after confirming that the integration supports the sensor profile; otherwise a device may appear connected without exposing the binary sensor behavior your automation expects.

The siren does not sound

Call its supported service directly, inspect the entity’s available actions, and verify that the target entity is the siren rather than a similarly named light or warning device. For Zigbee warning devices, check the ZHA action’s required sound and duration parameters.

The automation never runs

Inspect the automation trace, then test the trigger manually. A presence automation may be blocked because another person is still in the home zone, or a night-mode condition may fail because the panel is already armed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The PIN is rejected

Check whether the integration requires a code at all and whether the service expects it in data.code. Keep the PIN in Home Assistant’s secrets mechanism instead of writing it in a dashboard card or notification.

False alarms occur during normal movement

Review the mode-to-zone design: use armed home or armed night when people are inside, bypass expected motion areas where supported, and set entry delays that match the route from the door to the disarm method.

What happens if Home Assistant, the network, or power fails?

There is no universal uptime guarantee for every integration. A cloud-dependent sensor, phone notification, camera, or siren can behave differently from a locally controlled device when internet access is lost; a coordinator or power outage can make several entities unavailable at once.

Document each dependency and test it deliberately: disconnect internet access, stop the coordinator, restart Home Assistant, remove mains power from the siren where safe, and let a phone lose connectivity. Record which protections continue, which alerts are delayed, and which actions require manual recovery. Keep code-compliant standalone smoke and CO protection and a non-phone way to disarm or silence the system.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is a Home Assistant alarm suitable as your only security system?

It can coordinate sensors and responses very flexibly, but its safety depends on integration support, power, networking, device batteries, and your automation design. Treat it as an engineered system: use compatible hardware, least-privilege access, backups, clear modes, and recurring tests. If your insurance, landlord, or local regulations require monitored or certified alarm equipment, satisfy those requirements separately rather than assuming a DIY panel qualifies.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I create these automations without writing YAML?

Yes. Home Assistant’s visual automation editor can create triggers, conditions, and actions without YAML. Select the alarm panel service and sensor entities in the editor, then use the trace view to verify the generated automation when you test it.

Do all alarm integrations support armed home and armed night?

No. The available modes and services come from the selected alarm integration. Check the panel’s exposed states and supported services before designing automations around a particular mode.

What should I do if presence detection says someone is home after they leave?

Do not let a single presence update bypass your safety checks. Keep the last-person-away condition, provide a manual arm control, and verify zone state before leaving so a stale phone location does not silently prevent arming.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How can I stop an alarm during a false trigger?

Use the panel’s supported disarm action, supplying its PIN when required, then inspect the triggering sensor and automation trace. Do not simply disable the automation permanently; correct the sensor, delay, bypass, or mode that caused the unwanted trigger.
