You can build an Urdu read-aloud feature with Gemini TTS, but a convincing demo is only the beginning. Sitey’s implementation exposed three practical failure modes: delivery instructions and interface text accidentally became speech, an already-containerized WAV was wrapped in a second header and played as noise, and a WhatsApp voice note lost its ending. The durable solution is to test the language patterns your users actually write, keep transcript text separate from style controls, identify whether Gemini returned WAV or raw PCM before processing audio, and verify the file after it passes through the sharing app.
This is an engineering guide based on Sitey’s reported observations and Google’s documented Gemini TTS behavior. The Sitey account is not an independent benchmark, and its WhatsApp diagnosis remains unconfirmed.

“Free” describes the product experience and the limits you choose, not a guarantee that every API call is free. Gemini TTS usage, model availability, and pricing can change, so check the current Google documentation and billing console before launching publicly. Sitey put a server-side proxy between its clients and Gemini, then applied its own daily and per-request caps.
Google describes Gemini TTS as text-only input that produces audio-only output. You send the words to speak, choose a voice, and optionally provide delivery guidance; Gemini does not need an input recording for this use case. The current documentation identifies gemini-3.8-flash-tts and gemini-3.8-flash-lite-tts, but model names and availability are subject to change.

Sitey’s reported product limits were:
| Surface | Sitey limit | What the number means |
|---|---|---|
| Web | 5 voices per day | Sitey’s application cap, not a general Gemini quota |
| Web request | 500 characters | Maximum text sent by one Sitey web request |
| App | 40 voices per day | Sitey’s application cap, not a promise from Google |
Put the API key on a server or serverless worker rather than in browser or mobile code. A proxy lets you authenticate centrally, enforce character and call limits, log failures without exposing credentials, and disable abuse quickly. Rate-limit by account or device, and return a clear error when a user reaches a cap instead of silently generating a partial clip.
How should I choose a Gemini voice for Urdu, Roman Urdu, and mixed text?
Choose by listening to representative sentences, not by assuming that a voice supporting Urdu will pronounce every Urdu-related input well. Sitey compared Urdu script, Roman Urdu, English, and mixed Urdu-English lines, listened to several Gemini voices and Android’s Urdu voice, and selected Aoede on the Flash-Lite TTS model for its sample set. That is a listening-test result, not proof that Aoede is the best Urdu voice generally.

- Urdu script: Use ordinary sentences with common punctuation, numerals, and names.
- Roman Urdu: Include the spellings your users actually type; transliteration is not standardized.
- English: Test product names, URLs spoken as words, and technical terms that appear in Urdu conversations.
- Mixed Urdu-English: Put both scripts in one sentence, including a brand or person name that must remain recognizable.
Record what you hear for intelligibility, naturalness, pauses, and pronunciation of names. Keep the same text across voices and avoid assigning numerical scores unless you have a repeatable listening protocol. Google’s language catalog says Flash TTS supports 130 languages and Flash-Lite TTS supports 101, as reported in current documentation surfaced in October 2026; those catalog totals do not establish quality for a particular script, transliteration, or code-switched sentence.
Why is Gemini reading my instructions aloud?
The usual cause is that style directions, card labels, or other interface text were concatenated into the transcript sent for synthesis. The fix is to send only the words that should be heard and place delivery guidance in the API’s documented style or turn-level controls.

The bug Sitey reported
Sitey found that a generated clip could speak text intended only for the interface, including style directions, labels from a card, and emojis. Its stated fix was to pass only the message text and strip emojis before synthesis. This is an application-level observation; it does not mean Gemini always vocalizes every emoji or label.
Keep transcript and delivery metadata separate
Model your request with two different values: a transcript string and a style or delivery instruction. For example, the transcript might be “آپ کیسے ہیں؟” while the delivery instruction says to read it warmly and at a measured pace. Do not prepend “speak warmly:” to the transcript unless you actually want those words spoken.
Google’s current guide documents transcript text separately from turn-level style metadata and supports inline vocal tags in the appropriate request structure. The exact field names and SDK syntax can change, so use the current reference for your selected model rather than copying an older request snippet. Validate the final transcript immediately before the API call: remove card titles, hidden accessibility labels, markup, debug text, and any emoji policy your product does not support.
A practical pre-synthesis check
- Log the transcript length and a redacted preview on the server.
- Reject empty strings after cleanup instead of generating silence.
- Confirm that the text contains no UI prefix such as “Style:” or “Answer:”.
- Keep user-visible formatting separate from the plain text supplied to TTS.
- Test punctuation and line breaks because they affect pauses even when they are not spoken.
Why does my generated WAV sound like noise?
Noise usually means the bytes were interpreted with the wrong container assumption. A unary Gemini TTS response is a complete WAV file with a RIFF header by default, while a streaming response is headerless raw PCM chunks by default. If you add a WAV header to a response that already has one, the player reads the duplicated structure as audio data.

The format distinction to preserve
| Request mode | Default response | Audio characteristics documented by Google | Correct handling |
|---|---|---|---|
| Unary | Complete WAV | 24 kHz, mono, 16-bit signed little-endian PCM | Save or forward the file; do not create another RIFF header |
| Streaming | Headerless raw PCM chunks | 24 kHz, mono, 16-bit signed little-endian PCM | Concatenate chunks and create one valid container at the end |
Sitey said it had assumed an older raw-PCM behavior, then encountered a C2PA credentials chunk after the audio. Its report attributes the noisy playback to wrapping a complete WAV in another WAV header. The C2PA detail is part of that account, not proof that every Gemini response contains such a chunk or that it caused the noise.
Inspect before converting
- Identify whether your client used unary or streaming generation.
- Read the response MIME type and any format metadata your SDK exposes.
- For a presumed WAV, check for a RIFF header and a valid WAVE marker before writing bytes to disk.
- For presumed PCM, verify the documented sample rate, channel count, and sample width before constructing a header.
- Play the saved intermediate file before transcoding. If it is already clean, the defect is in the conversion or sharing step.
Do not infer the format from a variable name such as audioBytes. Treat the response mode and MIME type as authoritative, and keep container creation in one place in your codebase.

Why did WhatsApp cut off the end of my voice note?
There is no established single cause in Sitey’s account. The authors could not determine whether WhatsApp or a trailing C2PA chunk caused the truncation, so treat the workaround as an implementation report rather than a general guarantee about WhatsApp or Android.
The reported workaround
On Android, Sitey encoded the generated audio to AAC in an M4A container, drained the encoder through the end of the input stream, and then checked the duration of the clip that was actually shared. In the authors’ device check, a 4.60-second note became 4.61 seconds after the receive-and-verify step. That tiny difference demonstrates a check, not a universal WhatsApp tolerance or a promise that every clip will preserve its exact duration.

Verify both sides of the delivery path
- Record the duration and byte count of the generated intermediate file.
- Finish feeding the encoder and explicitly signal end-of-stream before closing it.
- Save the encoded M4A and play it locally.
- Send that exact file through the target chat workflow.
- On a receiving device, download or open the received media and compare its duration and audible ending with the source.
If the local M4A is complete but the received clip is short, preserve the source and received files, the device model, Android version, app version, and timestamps. Those details are necessary to isolate a transport or platform issue; changing the TTS prompt will not fix a file that was truncated later.
How do I implement the feature without repeating these bugs?
Use a pipeline with explicit boundaries: clean text, synthesize, validate the returned format, transcode only when required, and verify the final shared artifact.

Keep Urdu script, Roman Urdu, English, and mixed-script text intact for testing. Remove UI-only content and apply your emoji policy.
- Build a structured request. Put the transcript in the text field and delivery instructions in the current style or turn-level field. Confirm the syntax for the model and SDK version you deploy.
- Call Gemini server-side. Keep credentials away from browsers and APKs. Apply authentication, rate limits, character limits, and timeouts at the proxy.
- Classify the response. Branch on unary versus streaming mode and MIME or format metadata. Never run both “add WAV header” and “save complete WAV” paths on the same bytes.
- Validate audio. Check that the file opens, has the expected sample rate and channels, and contains audible speech before handing it to a mobile encoder.
- Encode for the destination only when needed. If your sharing channel requires AAC/M4A, drain and finalize the encoder before closing the file.
- Test the received media. Compare duration and the final spoken words after WhatsApp or another delivery service has processed the clip.
What should I log when a voice clip fails?
Log enough metadata to identify the boundary where bytes or text changed, while avoiding unnecessary retention of private user content.
- Input language pattern: Urdu script, Roman Urdu, English, or mixed.
- Sanitized character count and a short redacted transcript preview.
- Model, voice, request mode, SDK version, and response MIME type.
- Whether the first bytes contain a WAV/RIFF container.
- Intermediate and final durations, sample rate, channels, and file sizes.
- Encoder completion status and whether the receiving app produced a different duration.
- Server error code, timeout, retry count, and the client platform.
These records let you distinguish a prompt contamination bug from a container bug or a delivery-path truncation. They also make it possible to impose sensible caps on a free public endpoint instead of allowing one client to consume the entire allowance.

Which parts of the Sitey account should I treat cautiously?
Sitey’s voice choice, bug descriptions, and Android duration check are first-person engineering observations. They are useful implementation leads, but they are not independent reproduction, a formal Urdu benchmark, or a guarantee that another device and API version will behave identically.
Google’s documentation supports the text-only TTS model, the current model families, the separation of transcript and style controls, and the unary-versus-streaming audio distinction. It does not validate Sitey’s specific voice-quality judgment, explain the WhatsApp truncation, or confirm the article’s historical price figures. Recheck current pricing, quotas, model names, and supported languages before publishing limits or estimating operating cost.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can Gemini TTS translate my Urdu text automatically?
TTS speaks the text you provide; it is not a translation workflow. If your product accepts Urdu in one script and needs another language or transliteration, perform that transformation as a separate, reviewable step before synthesis.
Should I send the same prompt to every Gemini voice?
Yes, keep the transcript and delivery instruction constant while auditioning voices so you are comparing voices rather than prompt variants. Save the exact mixed-script samples because a voice that sounds good on Urdu-only text may handle English names differently.
How can I tell whether a WAV header is duplicated?
Inspect the first bytes and parse the RIFF/WAVE structure with an audio tool or library before writing any new header. A valid complete WAV should be passed through unchanged; only headerless PCM should enter your container-building path.
What is the safest way to expose an Urdu voice demo publicly?
Call Gemini from a server-side component, keep the key private, and enforce authentication, character limits, daily caps, timeouts, and abuse monitoring. A client-side key can be extracted and used outside your intended free allowance.
