Yes—you can publish an interactive Dixon–Coles soccer prediction page without exposing an API secret or running a model server for every visitor. Fit the model in a build or scheduled data job, export compact inputs for each upcoming fixture, and let browser JavaScript construct one scoreline-probability grid. The page can then calculate home/draw/away, totals, both-teams-to-score and exact-score markets locally.
This architecture changes deployment, not the model’s evidential limits. Numerical probabilities can still be based on stale fixtures or very little team history, and a working calculation is not proof of betting value. Show the generation time and data-quality warnings next to the results.

It means moving only the fitted, non-secret inputs needed for a forecast into the page, rather than asking a visitor’s browser to call a protected prediction API. A separate process does the historical-data work and model fitting; the static page receives values such as each team’s expected goals and a league-level low-score parameter.
When a visitor opens the page, client-side JavaScript uses those values to calculate a finite probability distribution for possible scorelines. Because every displayed market is summed from that same distribution, the 1X2, totals, both-teams-to-score and exact-score figures are mathematically tied to one another under the implementation.

The pattern described by Elio Liberatore in a September 15, 2026 DEV Community article inlines its data in the document, makes no runtime fetch, and can be served from static hosting. The article reports approximately 23 KB of JSON for a dozen leagues and a few hundred fixtures, and about 54 KB for the complete page. Those are measurements of that implementation, not a promise for every league, number of matches or bundle.
How does Dixon–Coles turn team results into score probabilities?
Dixon–Coles is a refined Poisson football-score model. It estimates attack and defence strength from previous results, converts those strengths into expected-goal rates for the home and away teams, and assigns a probability to each plausible scoreline.
For a fixture, call the expected goals lambda_home and lambda_away. A basic independent Poisson grid gives each score (h,a) a weight based on those two rates. The Dixon–Coles correction modifies the four low-score cells—0–0, 0–1, 1–0 and 1–1—using a league-specific low-score parameter. The implementation then normalizes the finite grid so all cells add to one.
The associated Python implementation documentation describes additional fitting options: time decay gives more influence to recent matches, shrinkage pulls estimates toward a league average when a team has limited observations, and optional expected-goals (xG) blending can supplement final scores. These are features of that implementation, not requirements of every Dixon–Coles model.
Once the grid is normalized, the browser does not need a separate formula for every market. It sums cells according to the event:
- Home win: cells where home goals exceed away goals.
- Draw: cells where the two goal counts are equal.
- Away win: cells where away goals exceed home goals.
- Over or under a goal line: cells grouped by the total
h + a. - Both teams to score: cells where both goal counts are at least one.
- Exact score: the individual cell for a result such as 2–1.
These are model probabilities, not tips or a statement that any outcome offers value against a bookmaker’s price.
What has to happen before the page is published?
The browser should receive already-fitted fixture inputs. A build script, scheduled workflow or other trusted data-generation job performs the work that would be too slow, expensive or sensitive to repeat for every visitor.

1. Collect and prepare historical results
Load dated match results for the competitions you support, identify home and away teams consistently, and keep the competition and season boundaries explicit. The cited package documentation describes associated Premier League data covering 2016/17 through 2024/25; that is the coverage of its dataset, not a claim that every league or season has equal depth.
2. Fit the model outside the browser
Estimate team attack and defence parameters and derive expected-goal rates for each upcoming fixture. If you use time decay, shrinkage or xG blending, record those choices in your build configuration so a later rebuild is reproducible.
3. Apply league-specific settings
Associate the correct low-score parameter with each competition. Do not silently reuse one league’s value for another: the low-score adjustment is part of the score-grid calculation and affects the four low-result cells.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
4. Generate a fixture record
Include the information the page needs to identify and qualify the forecast. A compact record can contain:
- Home and away team names or stable team identifiers.
- Fixture date and time, with an explicit time zone.
- Home and away expected-goal rates.
- The applicable league low-score parameter.
- A generation timestamp for the whole data batch.
- A quality indicator, such as a low-data flag, when a team has little relevant history.
5. Publish an immutable build
Embed the resulting JSON in the page or bundle it with the static assets. A visitor then downloads the page and runs the calculation locally; there is no request-time model server to scale and no prediction API token to protect.
How does the browser calculate a fixture?
Use one deterministic function that accepts the exported rates and low-score parameter, creates a finite score grid, normalizes it, and returns all markets. Keeping the calculation in one place prevents the page from showing probabilities that were produced by incompatible formulas.
- Read the fixture inputs. Parse the two expected-goal rates, league parameter and any quality metadata. Reject missing or non-numeric values instead of displaying a blank-looking forecast as if it were valid.
- Choose a maximum score. Build cells from 0–0 through a practical upper bound for both teams. The bound is an implementation choice; after normalization, verify that the omitted tail probability is acceptably small for your chosen rates.
- Calculate base Poisson weights. For each home-goal count
hand away-goal counta, calculate the independent Poisson weight fromlambda_homeandlambda_away. - Apply the Dixon–Coles adjustment. Modify only the 0–0, 0–1, 1–0 and 1–1 cells with the supplied league parameter. Leave other score cells on the base calculation.
- Normalize. Divide every cell by the sum of all cell weights. Check that the final total is approximately 1 within floating-point tolerance.
- Aggregate once. Traverse the normalized cells to produce 1X2, totals, both-teams-to-score and exact-score values. Reuse the same grid for the rendered table, chart and accessibility text.
- Attach provenance. Display the batch generation time and any low-data status beside the result, not hidden in a developer console.
For numerical stability, calculate factorial and exponential terms carefully, especially when rates or score bounds are high. Unit tests should check normalization, that 1X2 sums to one, and that complementary totals such as over and under plus any push category follow the exact line convention you display.

Which deployment approach fits this use case?
The right architecture depends on whether you need private inputs, request-time personalization or continuously changing forecasts. Shipping compact fitted inputs is the option that removes a visitor-facing secret while retaining interactive exploration.
| Approach | Visitor API secret | Request-time backend | Interactive results | Refresh behavior | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Direct browser call to a protected data or model API | Exposed if the browser must authenticate | Required at the API | Usually yes | As the upstream API changes | Credentials and usage limits are difficult to keep private in client code |
| Browser calls your proxy | Can remain private on the proxy | Required for every request | Yes | Proxy fetches or computes on demand | Operational cost, scaling and attack surface move to your service |
| Pre-rendered forecast pages | None | Not at request time | Limited unless each view is prebuilt | Requires a rebuild when fixtures or inputs change | Simple delivery but less client-side exploration |
| Static page with compact fitted inputs | None; all delivered data is public | Not at request time | Yes, through local JavaScript | Requires an upstream fit-and-publish job | Visitors see the last published batch, and model inputs are inspectable |
“No backend” therefore means no backend in the visitor’s request path. It does not mean that historical data, fixtures and fitted parameters appear automatically. A scheduled or manually triggered upstream process still has to regenerate and publish the page.
How should freshness be reported?
Show the data-generation timestamp prominently and distinguish it from the fixture kickoff time. The cited browser implementation reports that some scheduled runs arrived several hours late, so a schedule alone is not evidence that a new batch completed on time.
- Display a timestamp with time zone, such as “Forecast generated 2026-10-26 06:00 UTC.”
- Show the fixture’s source or update status if postponed matches can leave the published list out of date.
- Define a stale threshold in the interface and label forecasts beyond it rather than silently presenting them as current.
- Keep the previous valid build available if a new data job fails, but mark it with its actual older generation time.
A static deployment can be highly cacheable, but caching makes an honest timestamp even more important: a visitor may receive yesterday’s document while another visitor has the latest build.
How do you disclose thin team history?
A model can return a precise-looking expected-goal rate when a team has only a few relevant matches. Newly promoted clubs are a concrete early-season example. Add a visible low-data label when the sample is thin; the label communicates uncertainty but does not repair the estimate or guarantee calibration.
Define the trigger before publishing—for example, a minimum count of top-flight matches in the fitting window—and keep that rule consistent across leagues. Explain whether the count includes prior-division matches, cup matches or only the competition being forecast. If shrinkage toward a league average is enabled, say so as a modeling choice rather than implying that it eliminates sparse-data risk.
Is a browser-only calculation secure?
It is suitable for public forecasts, not for protecting secrets. Visitors can inspect JavaScript, embedded JSON and network responses, so never place an API token, private database credential or commercially restricted feed key in the page.

Assume that users can copy or alter the delivered rates and run the calculation themselves. That is normally acceptable when the product is an openly distributed forecast. If you must enforce entitlements, conceal proprietary data or audit every request, a server-side boundary is still necessary.
Validate and sanitize fixture text before rendering it into HTML, use a content-security policy appropriate to your host, and pin build dependencies. These web-security measures protect the page; they do not make public model inputs confidential.
What do the payload and runtime costs look like?
The implementation described in the DEV Community article inlines roughly 23 KB of JSON for about a dozen leagues and a few hundred fixtures, with a full document around 54 KB. Treat those figures as author-reported, one-implementation measurements. Your payload will change with team-name length, metadata, score-grid settings, compression, number of fixtures and the JavaScript bundle.
Because the browser computes only the fixtures the visitor views—or a few hundred lightweight grids at page load—the runtime can remain small enough for a static page. Measure on representative mobile devices rather than assuming desktop performance. If the page becomes heavy, lazy-calculate markets when a match is opened and avoid shipping historical match rows that the client never uses.
How should you validate the model without overclaiming?
Separate software correctness, statistical calibration and betting profitability. A page can pass its arithmetic tests while its probabilities are poorly calibrated, and a calibrated model can still fail to beat market prices after margin and timing effects.
Recommended Free Tools
- Arithmetic tests: confirm non-negative cells, grid normalization and consistent aggregation.
- Data tests: ensure each fixture uses only information available before kickoff and the intended league parameter.
- Calibration checks: compare predicted probabilities with outcomes over a properly separated evaluation period.
- Operational checks: verify timestamps, stale flags, low-data labels and failed-build fallback behavior.
- Economic evaluation: if you study betting, predefine the market, odds source, closing-time rule, stake convention and costs; report uncertainty rather than presenting a backtest as a guarantee.
One author-maintained football-model repository reports that its tested model did not beat its chosen market benchmark. That is a claim about that project’s method and test, not independent evidence about every Dixon–Coles implementation. No broad, independently published performance statistic establishes that this browser architecture has a profitable edge.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What is a practical build checklist?
- Historical results are versioned, dated and assigned to the correct competition.
- The fitting job records model options such as decay, shrinkage and xG blending.
- Every fixture has expected-goal rates and the correct league low-score parameter.
- The exported data includes generation time and a defined quality indicator.
- No secret key or private endpoint is present in HTML, JavaScript or JSON.
- The browser constructs one normalized score grid and derives every displayed market from it.
- Tests cover score bounds, normalization, aggregation and malformed records.
- The interface distinguishes fixture time, generation time and stale status.
- Thin samples receive a visible warning with an explanation of the rule.
- A failed refresh leaves the last valid build identifiable rather than silently current-looking.
What can go wrong, and how do you recover?
The page shows no probabilities
Inspect the embedded payload for missing rates, invalid JSON or a league parameter that was not mapped. Fail the individual fixture visibly and keep other fixtures usable; do not substitute a generic league value without labeling the change.

A newly promoted team looks overconfident
Confirm the low-data rule, relevant-match count and any shrinkage setting. Keep the numerical forecast if it is the model’s output, but show the warning and explain that sparse evidence widens uncertainty.
Visitors expect live updates
Explain that static delivery updates only when the upstream build publishes a new document. For genuinely live odds, lineups or injury data, add a server-side or public-data update path and reassess the security and cost trade-offs.
Who should choose this architecture?
It suits a public, interactive forecast page whose inputs can be disclosed and whose updates can occur in batches: a league dashboard, educational model demo or match explorer. It is less suitable when each user needs private features, minute-by-minute data, confidential training data or a guarantee that every request reflects the latest upstream state.
The central design discipline is simple: fit and refresh outside the request path, ship only the compact public inputs, calculate one transparent score distribution in the browser, and disclose when that distribution is old or data-poor. That gives visitors responsive probabilities without pretending that deployment convenience proves model accuracy or betting value.

Can visitors reproduce the probabilities from the page source?
Yes. The browser receives the fitted rates, league parameter and calculation code needed for the displayed forecast, so a technically minded visitor can inspect and rerun them. Treat that transparency as an expected property of a public static page, not as a way to protect proprietary inputs.
Does static hosting eliminate the need for scheduled jobs?
No. Static hosting removes request-time computation, but a separate process must still ingest new results, refit or update fixtures, generate the payload and publish a new build. If that process stops, the page continues serving its last successful batch.
Why can two score grids with the same expected goals differ?
They may use different score maxima, low-score parameters, time-decay fits or xG blending choices. They can also differ if one grid is not normalized after truncating high scores, so publish the calculation settings alongside the generated timestamp.
Should a low-data warning change the probability shown to users?
The warning is a disclosure, not an automatic correction. You can choose a modeling treatment such as shrinkage before export, but the interface should not silently alter a fitted rate merely because the sample is small; explain the rule and its limitations.
