Use Screen Time: turn on Content & Privacy Restrictions, then set Installing Apps and/or Deleting Apps to Don’t Allow. If you also need to block alternative app marketplaces or web downloads, configure their separate controls.
Block App Store installs or deletions on your own device
On an iPhone or iPad you manage yourself, use the Screen Time controls for App Store purchases. Apple’s current iPhone guide documents these restrictions; menu wording can vary by software version.

- Open Settings and tap Screen Time.
- Tap Content & Privacy Restrictions and turn it on.
- Tap iTunes & App Store Purchases.
- Set Installing Apps to Don’t Allow to prevent new App Store installations, Deleting Apps to Don’t Allow to prevent app removal, or both if you need both restrictions.
These are separate switches, so choose the restriction you actually want. The installation switch should not be treated as a universal block on every app-distribution method; see the separate controls below.

Set restrictions on a child’s iPhone or iPad
A parent or guardian using Family Sharing can manage a child’s Screen Time settings from the parent’s device. Apple’s parental-controls guide describes this route.

- On the parent’s device, open Settings > Screen Time.
- Under Family, tap the child’s name.
- Open Content & Privacy Restrictions. Enter the Screen Time passcode if prompted.
- Tap iTunes & App Store Purchases and set Installing Apps and/or Deleting Apps to Don’t Allow.
On iOS 26 and iPadOS 26 or later, Apple says a child can request an exception to some Screen Time restrictions. This is version-dependent and does not mean every restriction can be overridden.
Block alternative marketplaces and web app downloads separately
On supported software and in regions where alternative app distribution is available, App Store restrictions may not cover apps installed through alternative marketplaces or from the web. Apple documents separate controls for those channels in its alternative app distribution guidance.

- Open Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions.
- Tap App Installations & Purchases.
- Set App Marketplaces and Web to Don’t Allow where those options are available.
Apple warns that if parental controls were enabled before upgrading to a version that supports alternative distribution, these channels may not have been blocked automatically. Check the settings directly rather than assuming the older restrictions cover them.

If you want to allow installations but restrict what kinds of apps can be accessed, age ratings provide a more targeted control. Open Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > App Store, Media, Web & Games > Apps, then select the permitted rating level. Apple also documents App Clips as a separate restriction in this area. These controls supplement installation restrictions; they do not replace the install or deletion switches. Know what app restrictions do—and do not do
- Personal device: configure Screen Time in the device’s own Settings.
- Child’s family-managed device: select the child under the Family section of Screen Time on the parent’s device.
- App Store distribution: use the Installing Apps and Deleting Apps switches.
- Alternative distribution: on supported versions and in supported regions, inspect App Marketplaces and Web separately.
- Built-in Apple apps: turning off an app in the allowed-apps controls hides it from the Home Screen; it does not delete it. That is different from blocking deletion of a downloaded app, as explained in Apple’s iPad Screen Time guide.
