“500 PDF jobs” is not enough information to establish capacity or compliance. It could mean 500 submissions in a batch or 500 jobs running at once, and performance depends on the documents, processing steps, service limits and completion target. To make a defensible decision, define the workload, compare the actual data flows and controls of the candidate deployments, and preserve results from a representative load test. No capacity limit or benchmark for an unnamed PDF API is established here.
What does “500 PDF jobs” mean?
Before comparing a local deployment with a hosted API, turn the headline number into a testable workload. Five hundred jobs submitted over an hour are not equivalent to 500 simultaneous jobs, and a batch endpoint does not by itself demonstrate that either workload can be processed within your target time.

- Concurrency and arrival rate: State whether 500 is the total number submitted, the number active at once, or both. Record how quickly jobs arrive and whether arrivals come in bursts.
- Document mix: Record file-size and page-count distributions, not just averages. Identify scanned PDFs and the share that requires OCR, since processing steps can differ materially.
- Job behavior: Specify retries, timeouts, failure handling and whether jobs can be duplicated or resumed.
- Completion objective: Set the acceptable time to finish the batch and any per-job latency target. Decide how errors and partial completion affect success.
There is no established throughput figure, rate limit or benchmark for the unnamed API in this article. Obtain current limits for the specific API, version, plan and configuration, then test against the workload you actually expect.
Should you run PDF jobs locally or use a hosted API?
The choice is not simply “secure local” versus “compliant cloud.” It is a comparison of data boundaries, operational responsibilities, evidence access and demonstrated capacity for two specific designs. Map each design end to end before drawing a conclusion.

| Decision area | Hosted processing | Local or self-hosted processing |
|---|---|---|
| Data boundary and residency | Identify where inputs, temporary files, outputs, logs and backups are handled or stored, including regions and subprocessors. | Identify the network and infrastructure boundary in which documents and derived data are processed, including any external services or backup destinations. |
| Retention and deletion | Check service-specific retention and deletion terms, configuration and evidence of deletion. | Define where files and derived data persist, who can access them, how long they remain and how deletion is recorded. |
| Operational control | Determine which controls the provider operates and which remain yours, including identity, network configuration, keys, monitoring and incident response. | Your team must operate and evidence the relevant infrastructure and controls, including patching, identity, isolation, keys, monitoring and recovery. |
| Audit evidence | Confirm which job and administrative events are available, whether logs can be exported, and how long they can be retained in your required system. | Confirm that the engine and surrounding infrastructure expose the events your audit needs, and that logs are protected and retained. |
| Capacity evidence | Obtain the applicable service quotas and rate limits; validate the workload with a representative test. | Measure the deployed system under the representative workload and retain the configuration and results. |
| Administrative features | Check the chosen hosted edition’s current management, API and audit features. | Check feature availability in the self-hosted edition; do not assume it matches the hosted edition. |
What hosted processing changes
Hosted processing moves some handling and operation of the stack to a provider; it does not transfer every security or compliance obligation. AWS describes cloud security as a shared responsibility: AWS is responsible for security of its cloud infrastructure, while customer responsibilities depend on the service, data sensitivity, organizational requirements and applicable law. Its AWS Batch security guidance discusses IAM, VPCs and interface endpoints, compliance validation, infrastructure security and CloudTrail API-call logging. Those topics can inform a review of an AWS Batch deployment, but they do not establish that a particular PDF application is compliant or fast enough. AWS Batch security
What self-hosting changes
Self-hosting can keep processing within an operator-controlled network boundary, but the operator then has to supply and demonstrate the relevant infrastructure, security controls and operational processes. It does not automatically establish compliance: the required controls depend on the organization’s obligations and the actual deployment.
Nautris says its console offers an SDK-compatible /v1 API for document workflows and processes documents on managed infrastructure. Nautris recommends self-hosting for regulated, air-gapped or data-residency-bound workloads, and says some engine-only methods, including audit-related methods, are available only in its self-hosted engine. These are statements about Nautris’s product and positioning, not a universal rule or independent compliance determination. Check the current features and terms for the edition you would use. What compliance evidence should you collect?
Evidence should describe the design you actually tested, not a generic claim that a provider or deployment is “secure.” Assemble it before making a capacity or compliance conclusion.
- Identify the system: Record the exact PDF API, version, edition, plan and configuration. For a hosted service, identify the region and applicable contractual terms.
- Document the workload: Save the concurrency, arrival pattern, file-size and page-count distributions, OCR share, retry policy, error handling and completion objective used for the test.
- Map document flows: Trace input PDFs, temporary files, outputs, logs and backups. Record where each is processed or stored, the regions and subprocessors involved, and who can access it.
- Verify retention and deletion: Obtain the selected service’s current retention and data-location documentation. Distinguish binding contractual commitments and configured settings from general product statements; establish how deletion can be verified.
- Record controls and responsibility: Identify who manages identity and access, network isolation, keys, patching, monitoring, incident response and recovery. For AWS Batch components, use the shared-responsibility model and review the relevant IAM, VPC, endpoint, infrastructure and logging configuration rather than treating AWS use as proof of application compliance.
- Preserve test evidence: Keep the test configuration, inputs or representative test corpus, timestamps, raw results, completion times, failures, retries and error rates. Record the deployment configuration and any limits or throttling observed so another reviewer can understand what was measured.
How should you run a representative load test?
Use the test to answer a bounded question, such as whether a specified mix of PDFs completes within a specified time at a specified concurrency. A result from one workload should not be generalized to different file sizes, OCR proportions, arrival patterns or service configurations.
- Use representative, authorized test documents and avoid placing sensitive production files in a test environment unless its controls and terms permit it.
- Exercise the expected concurrency and arrival pattern, including the burst behavior and retries your production workflow will use.
- Capture job identities and statuses, timestamps, completions, failures, timeouts and throttling so results can be reconciled to the submitted work.
- Retain the exact API version, plan or deployment configuration and any provider quota information alongside the results.
A passing test supports a conclusion only for the tested conditions. It does not prove an API’s universal limit or resolve compliance questions that depend on contracts, data location, controls or applicable requirements.

How to interpret vendor statements about handling PDFs
Read security and retention claims in the scope of the named provider and service. For example, PDF Blocks’ security page, marked “Last updated 27 July 2026,” says its API is stateless and processes each file in memory before returning the result. That is a vendor description of PDF Blocks’ service; it does not establish how another provider handles files, nor does the statement alone answer every question about logs, derived data, backups, regions or contractual commitments. Check the current documentation and terms for the exact service and configuration under consideration. PDF Blocks security
