Benchmark AI coding models as complete, controlled systems—not as isolated leaderboard numbers. A credible comparison fixes the task set, prompt, model version and settings, agent scaffold, tools, token and time limits, runtime image, dependencies, and grading procedure. It then runs representative tasks, checks that tests and instructions are valid, repeats trials often enough to show variability, and reports failures, cost, latency, and scope. SWE-bench can measure repository-level issue resolution, but its scores require version-specific caveats: audits in 2026 found substantial test defects, broken tasks, and evidence of training-data exposure. The practical goal is not to find a universally “best” model; it is to learn which system performs reliably on your team’s work under conditions another team could reproduce.

What does an AI coding benchmark actually measure?

An AI coding benchmark measures the behavior of a model inside an evaluation setup. The measured result is produced by the interaction of the task, prompt, model and sampling settings, agent loop, tools, environment, limits, and grader. Change any of those inputs and you may be measuring a different system.

For example, a repository-repair test may give an agent a Git checkout and an issue description, allow shell commands and file edits, then run a prescribed test command. A chat-only completion, an IDE agent with network access, and a bash-only harness are not interchangeable experiments, even if they use the same underlying model.

Report the result as a scoped statement such as “Model X, version Y, in scaffold Z, solved 42 of 100 held-out Python repository tasks on a specified date.” Avoid turning that into “Model X has a 42% coding ability.”

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Task set: languages, repositories, issue types, difficulty, and whether tasks are public, private, or held out.
  • Prompt: the exact system and user instructions, issue text, context files, and formatting rules.
  • Model and settings: model identifier, snapshot or release date, temperature, sampling parameters, reasoning mode, and context limits.
  • Agent scaffold and tools: orchestration code, shell or IDE tools, patch format, network policy, retrieval, and retry behavior.
  • Runtime: operating system, container image, language runtimes, dependency versions, hardware, and resource limits.
  • Grading: test commands, hidden checks, manual review, timeouts, and rules about changing tests or the environment.

Epoch AI’s evaluation methodology describes prompts, scaffold and tools, samples, input/output limits, and environment as core components. Omitting them makes a score difficult to interpret or reproduce.

How do I choose tasks that represent real development?

Start with the work your intended users actually do, then sample it deliberately. A benchmark built only from GitHub issue repairs cannot establish performance on design discussions, new feature development, code review, migrations, incident response, documentation, or non-code work.

Define the target workload

  • List the languages, frameworks, build systems, and operating systems that matter.
  • Separate bug fixes, feature work, refactors, dependency upgrades, tests, and debugging.
  • Record repository size, build time, test count, and external-service requirements.
  • Set difficulty bands, from localized edits to changes spanning several modules or services.
  • Decide whether success means a passing patch, a review-ready patch, reduced latency, lower cost, or some combination.

Use a balanced sample rather than selecting only easy, well-tested issues. Keep a private or held-out portion whenever possible: public repositories, issue text, and published solutions can enter model training data.

Check task quality before running models

Each task should state the required behavior, provide a reproducible starting revision, and have tests that accept reasonable implementations. Inspect for underspecified prompts, misleading issue descriptions, tests that assert an incidental implementation detail, missing fixtures, dependency failures, and environment assumptions.

OpenAI’s 2026 audits identified overly strict tests, low test coverage, unclear or misleading prompts, and setup problems as threats to fair measurement. A model should not fail because a package mirror is unavailable or because the test rejects a functionally correct alternative.

Which coding benchmark should I use?

Choose by task relevance and validity first, then compare contamination risk, language and operating-system coverage, protocol stability, reproducibility, and operating cost. The main public options answer different questions.

Option Useful for Important caveat
SWE-bench Verified Recognizable, human-reviewed repository issue-resolution tasks with a documented bash-only comparison path. OpenAI’s 2026 analysis reported flawed tests and training-data exposure; do not treat one score as an uncontested frontier-capability measure.
SWE-bench Pro / Pro V2 Longer-horizon software-engineering tasks. The September 22, 2026 Pro V2 update describes a locked protocol and refreshed validation. OpenAI’s July 2026 audit estimated that roughly 30% of Pro tasks were broken. State the exact version, split, and audit caveat.
SWE-bench Live Automatically updated, multi-language and multi-OS tasks intended to reflect newer work. Update frequency and verification procedures affect results; a live set still needs independent task-quality review.
Private, team-authored evaluation Your own repositories, workflows, security constraints, and acceptance criteria, with less public exposure. Writing, maintaining, and validating tasks takes substantial engineering time; there is no universal standard design.

Use a public benchmark for a shared reference point, a private set for product decisions, or both. Do not rank models from runs that use different prompts, agents, tools, or runtime conditions.

What does SWE-bench test, and how should I interpret it?

SWE-bench gives an agent a repository and an issue description, then evaluates whether its code change resolves the issue without breaking unrelated behavior. The original release distinguishes FAIL_TO_PASS tests for the requested fix from PASS_TO_PASS tests that should remain green to detect regressions.

Verified’s scope

SWE-bench Verified is a human-reviewed subset of 500 tasks. OpenAI’s 2024 release describes screening involving 93 developers experienced in Python. Those facts establish a curated issue-repair set, not a general measure of software-development ability.

Why a Verified score needs a warning label

In a February 23, 2026 audit, OpenAI examined 27.6% of commonly unsolved Verified problems and reported that at least 59.4% of the audited subset had flawed tests that rejected functionally correct submissions. Both denominators matter: the 59.4% figure applies only to the 27.6% audited subset, not to every Verified task.

The same analysis reported frontier models reproducing gold patches or task-specific wording, consistent with possible training-data contamination. Public task sets can therefore reward memorization or patch retrieval as well as general problem-solving. OpenAI recommended stopping use of Verified scores as a frontier coding-capability measure while acknowledging that the alternative was also imperfect.

What changed in Pro and Pro V2?

In July 2026, OpenAI reported an estimated approximately 30% broken-task rate for SWE-bench Pro: 27.4% flagged by datapoint analysis and 34.1% by human annotation. These are the report’s estimates, not settled universal rates.

The September 22, 2026 SWE-bench Pro V2 update describes 642 tasks across 11 repositories, a locked protocol, corrections to 69 task instructions, and regrading on pristine images. It publishes both grades to help detect systems that manipulate the working environment. Quote the version and date whenever you cite a Pro result; task removals and corrections can change the meaning of a leaderboard entry.

What does SWE-bench Live add?

SWE-bench Live is designed to update automatically and cover multiple languages and operating systems. Its August 2026 verification update changed rollout-trajectory checks. Fresh tasks may reduce some exposure to old training data, but update frequency alone does not prove that prompts, tests, or environments are fair. Review task quality and record the exact snapshot used.

How do I build a controlled comparison?

Run every candidate through the same harness and change only the model variable unless your experiment explicitly studies another factor.

  1. Freeze the task manifest. Assign stable IDs, repository revisions, issue text, expected test commands, timeouts, and exclusion rules. Keep a held-out set for final decisions.
  2. Freeze the prompt. Store system, developer, and user messages exactly, including repository instructions and output-format requirements. Do not quietly add hints for one model.
  3. Pin model settings. Record the provider’s model identifier or snapshot, temperature, top-p or equivalent sampling controls, reasoning settings, maximum output, context window, and retry policy.
  4. Pin the agent scaffold. Use the same planning loop, tool definitions, patch application, observation limits, and stopping criteria. A different scaffold can change performance more than a model revision.
  5. Control tools and access. Record shell, editor, test, retrieval, browser, package-install, and network permissions. If one system can search the web or call a service, the comparison is not model-only.
  6. Reproduce the environment. Capture the container or virtual-machine image, operating system, runtimes, compiler, dependency lockfiles, hardware, CPU or GPU limits, and environment variables.
  7. Run the same grader. Execute the prescribed tests from a clean checkout. Prevent edits to tests or hidden fixtures unless the protocol explicitly allows them.
  8. Repeat trials. Stochastic agents can take different paths. State whether a result is one run or repeated trials, and report the aggregate plus spread when available. No reviewed source establishes a universally correct run count; choose one that makes uncertainty acceptable for your cost and decision.
  9. Preserve artifacts. Save prompts, trajectories, patches, logs, test output, timing, token usage, and failure reasons under stable task IDs.

How should I grade an AI coding agent?

Use layered outcomes instead of a single pass rate. Automated tests are necessary but can be wrong or incomplete.

Recommended outcome fields

  • Fix tests: whether the required behavior passes.
  • Regression tests: whether unrelated behavior remains green.
  • Patch validity: whether the agent changed the intended files and respected restrictions.
  • Build and setup: whether failures came from compilation, dependencies, or infrastructure rather than the patch.
  • Human review: correctness, maintainability, security, and adherence to project conventions.
  • Efficiency: elapsed time, model calls, input and output tokens, and monetary cost if measured.

Separate “agent failed to solve” from “grader or environment failed.” Re-run infrastructure failures from a pristine image. For suspiciously successful patches, compare the working tree with a clean checkout and inspect whether tests, fixtures, or configuration were modified. Pro V2’s pristine-image regrading is an example of this defense.

How many runs do I need, and how do I report uncertainty?

There is no single correct repetition count. Use more trials when tasks are few, sampling is highly variable, or the decision is consequential; use fewer when runs are expensive and the result is only exploratory. The important requirement is to disclose the design.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Report per-task outcomes, total tasks attempted, successes, failures, timeouts, infrastructure errors, and the number of trials. For repeated runs, provide the mean or median and a spread measure such as a confidence interval or interquartile range, explaining how it was calculated. Do not present a small difference as meaningful unless it exceeds run-to-run uncertainty and plausible grading noise.

What should a reproducible benchmark report contain?

Publish a compact protocol record with enough detail for another team to recreate the comparison.

Category Record
Scope Benchmark name, version or snapshot, task split, task count, repositories, languages, and evaluation date.
Model Exact model ID or snapshot, provider, settings, context and output limits, and retry behavior.
Agent Scaffold version, planning and tool loop, available tools, network policy, and stopping rules.
Environment Image digest, OS, runtimes, dependencies, hardware, resource limits, and test command.
Grading Visible and hidden tests, manual review rules, timeout handling, prohibited file changes, and pristine-image checks.
Results Task-level status, aggregate and spread, failures by category, latency, token use, cost if measured, and excluded runs with reasons.

Include the date because model endpoints, benchmark splits, and live task sets change. A leaderboard number without this context is not a complete comparison.

What are the most common benchmark mistakes?

Mixing harnesses

Comparing one model with an autonomous coding scaffold against another in a single-turn prompt measures systems with different capabilities. Re-run both through the same scaffold, or label the experiment as a scaffold comparison.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Using public tasks as a clean test

Published issues, patches, and discussions may be in training data. Use held-out or private tasks, inspect suspiciously exact outputs, and report contamination risk rather than assuming a public score is pure generalization.

Trusting a broken test

Audit failures manually and test known-correct reference patches. If a test rejects valid behavior, mark the task invalid or report a corrected analysis; never silently count it as a model failure.

Changing the environment between models

Different dependency versions, network availability, hardware limits, or timeouts can dominate the result. Pin and verify the environment before each run.

Reporting only the average

An average can hide that one model solves easy tasks while another handles a smaller number of difficult tasks. Publish task-level outcomes and failure categories.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Calling issue repair “coding ability”

Keep the claim within scope. An issue-resolution benchmark says something about that protocol’s tasks; it does not establish performance on every software-development activity.

When is a private evaluation better than a public leaderboard?

A private evaluation is preferable when your decision concerns proprietary repositories, security-sensitive code, unusual languages, internal build systems, or workflows absent from public benchmarks. It can reduce training-data exposure and align grading with your acceptance criteria.

Build it from representative historical tasks, redact secrets, freeze a known-good starting revision, and have engineers independently verify requirements and tests. Maintain a non-public holdout set, rotate tasks as they become exposed, and version the harness. Budget for ongoing maintenance: dependencies, APIs, and repository conventions change, and a stale private set can become as misleading as a stale public leaderboard.

How should I make a model-selection decision?

Translate benchmark outcomes into the operating constraints of your team. Weight task categories by their real frequency and cost, then examine quality and reliability before speed or price.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Choose the model with the strongest result on your representative holdout tasks, not necessarily the highest public score.
  • Check worst-case failures, security defects, and regression behavior before deployment.
  • Measure latency and cost on the same hardware and tool policy if those affect workflow economics.
  • Run a small production pilot with human review and rollback controls.
  • Re-evaluate after model, scaffold, dependency, or benchmark-version changes.

The defensible conclusion is usually conditional: “Under this prompt, scaffold, environment, and date, Model A was more reliable on our tested workload, while Model B was faster or cheaper.” That is useful without pretending the result is universal.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a high SWE-bench score predict performance in my codebase?

Only weakly unless your repositories, languages, task types, and tooling resemble the benchmark. Validate the model on held-out internal tasks and compare failure modes before making a procurement or deployment decision.

How can I detect that a benchmark task is contaminated?

Look for patches or wording reproduced unusually exactly, search public histories for matching solutions, and include private or recently created tasks. Treat contamination as a risk to investigate, not something a score alone can reveal.

Should I allow internet access during an AI coding evaluation?

Allow it only if internet access matches the real workflow, and give every model the same policy. Record domains, package mirrors, retrieval tools, and rate limits because network access changes both capability and reproducibility.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is the difference between pass rate and patch quality?

Pass rate reports whether the selected tests succeeded. Patch quality also considers maintainability, security, scope discipline, review comments, and whether the agent altered tests or configuration to obtain a pass.
