Use three separate layers if you want Steam data to survive a reinstall or a dead drive: Steam’s Backup game files feature for installation data, Steam Cloud for the files a game developer has selected, and a dated manual copy of your actual save folders on another physical drive. A Steam installation backup is not a complete save backup, and Steam Cloud is synchronization rather than a versioned archive.
The steps below cover the current Steam client on Windows, macOS, Linux and Steam Deck, including Cloud downloads, Proton save paths, conflict recovery and alternatives when a title does not support Cloud.

What is the difference between backing up a Steam game and backing up its saves?
Steam’s installation backup preserves Steam-managed program files so you can avoid downloading a large game again. Save data is separate: it may be in Documents, AppData, a publisher folder, a Proton prefix or Steam’s Cloud directory, and the built-in archive may not include it.
| Goal | Best first method | What it protects | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Avoid a large redownload | Steam Backup game files, or copy the game folder and verify it after reinstalling | Steam-managed installation files and the installed build | Does not automatically capture every save, mod, configuration or launcher file |
| Carry progress to another computer | Steam Cloud when the game supports it and both Cloud settings are enabled | Developer-selected saves, settings or profile data | The developer chooses the files; a deletion or bad conflict choice can sync everywhere |
| Protect a valuable campaign or world | Dated manual copies of the real save folder | Saves, with as much history as you retain | You must locate the title’s true save path and copy it while the game is closed |
| Survive a failed system drive | Copy archives to a separate portable SSD or HDD | Backups independent of the computer’s internal disk | A second folder on the same physical disk is not a disaster-recovery backup |
How do I back up Steam game files with the current client?
The current path is on the game’s Installed Files page, not the older top-level Backup and Restore Games wizard.

- Open Library in Steam.
- Right-click the game and choose Properties….
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Backup game files.
- Click Browse… and choose a destination folder with enough free space.
- Wait for Steam to finish. If Steam offers Open folder, use it to identify the completed archive, then copy that archive to another physical drive.
Back up after pending patches finish if you want the archive to match the current depot. Close the game first, launch it online if Cloud synchronization matters, and check the destination’s free space before starting.
What if my Steam client still shows the old backup wizard?
Some installations still expose Steam > Backup currently installed programs and Steam > Restore a previous backup. That older wizard can still be usable, but Valve’s current player instructions use Library > Properties > Installed Files > Backup game files. Prefer the current path when both are available.
How can I include custom maps, mods or configuration files?
Valve’s example for a complete installation backup places custom files inside the game’s Steam folder, commonly C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\<game name>. The example subfolders are:
cfgfor custom configurations and scriptsdownloadsfor custom multiplayer contentmapsfor custom mapsmaterialsfor custom textures and skinsSAVEfor some single-player saved games
Those folders are an example of where Steam’s archive can see custom content, not a universal save rule. Preserve mod-manager profiles, load orders, screenshots, manually installed mods and publisher-launcher data separately. Workshop subscriptions can usually be restored by subscribing again, but a removed Workshop item or a hand-installed file may not return.
How do I restore Steam game files from a backup?
- Install Steam and sign in to the account that owns the game.
- Open Steam’s upper-left menu and choose Restore Game Backup….
- Browse to the folder that actually contains the completed backup files. Do not select the whole external drive or an unrelated parent folder.
- Continue through Steam’s restore windows and select the destination library.
- After the installation appears in your Library, open Properties > Installed Files and run Verify integrity of game files.
Valve warns that restoration may fail when the Steam installation path contains special characters, such as a path containing Chinese characters. An ASCII-only Steam path is safer when you expect to use Restore Game Backup.
Games that rely on a third-party installer, download manager or external updater may not fully support Steam’s backup feature. For those titles, use the developer’s own export or backup function and copy the save data independently.

For a live installation, copy the game’s folder from Steam\steamapps\common to the other drive. On the new computer, copy it into the corresponding library, click Install for that game in Steam, select the library containing the copied files, and let Steam discover and verify them instead of downloading the entire game.
Typical default locations are below; confirm the real library in Steam > Settings > Storage because libraries can be moved.

How do I enable Steam Cloud and restore Cloud saves?
Steam Cloud stores developer-selected user files on Steam’s servers and downloads them before a supported game starts on another computer. Valve describes it this way: “Steam Cloud automatically stores files from your game on Steam’s servers so your players can log into Steam and access their saved games from any computer.” It is not a player-controlled, multi-version backup.
- Open Steam > Settings > Cloud.
- Enable Steam Cloud synchronization for applications which support it.
- In Library, right-click the game and choose Properties….
- On General, enable Keep game saves in the Steam Cloud for [game].
The Steam store page’s Cloud icon means the developer enabled Cloud support; it does not prove that every save slot, configuration file or graphics setting is included. Valve’s documentation says files written through Auto-Cloud or the Cloud API are replicated after the game exits and downloaded before launch on another computer.
How do I download Steam Cloud saves manually?
Use Steam’s account page at https://store.steampowered.com/account/remotestorage. Sign in, select the game, choose Show Files, and download each listed file.
Make a local copy of your current files before downloading an older Cloud copy. For a deliberate rollback, turn Cloud off, place the downloaded files in the game’s real save path, launch and confirm the restored progress, then turn Cloud back on so the verified set can upload.
Where are local Steam Cloud files stored?
Valve’s usual userdata roots are:
- Windows:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata - macOS:
~/Library/Application Support/Steam/userdata - Linux and SteamOS:
~/.local/share/Steam/userdata
Inside userdata are folders for each Steam account that has logged in, followed by a folder for each game’s AppID. Clouded files usually sit in <AppID>/remote/. Copy the remote folder for a save backup. The parent also contains remotecache.vdf and machine-specific metadata; copy the parent only when you specifically need that metadata.

What should I do when Steam Cloud shows a conflict?
Do not choose a side immediately and do not keep playing while the conflict is unresolved. First copy both the local and Cloud versions to a separate dated folder, then inspect timestamps, file names and in-game progress before choosing the version you want.

Steam can prompt you to keep local files or Cloud files after playing on two devices. A newer timestamp is a useful clue, not proof that the file contains the best progress. Valve’s Cloud service permanently deletes a file when deletion is synchronized and keeps no prior versions. No save tool can merge two divergent opaque save files correctly, so preserve both and choose one deliberately.
Where are Steam save files stored when a game does not use Cloud?
There is no universal Steam save directory. Check the game’s support documentation first, then inspect these common locations:
| Location | Typical contents |
|---|---|
steamapps/common/<Game> |
Games that keep saves beside their executable, plus some custom SAVE folders |
Documents or Documents\My Games |
Common Windows save and configuration folders |
%APPDATA%, %LOCALAPPDATA% or %USERPROFILE%\Saved Games |
Per-user Windows data used by many third-party games |
userdata\<SteamID>\<AppID>\remote |
Steam Cloud files cached locally |
| Publisher launcher folders | Saves managed by a separate launcher or account service |
steamapps/compatdata/<AppID>/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/ |
Windows saves for a Proton game on Steam Deck or Linux |
Cloud will not protect a game that never enabled it, a title that enabled it on only one operating system, files outside the watched paths, games installed from another store, manually installed games, or emulator saves. If Cloud was disabled, the local files were deleted and the old computer is no longer accessible, Valve says those saves cannot be recovered.
How do I make a manual backup of Steam save files?
- Finish any pending Cloud synchronization and fully quit the game. Save files can change while the process is open.
- Locate the actual save folder using the table above or the game developer’s support instructions.
- Copy the folder; do not cut or move it. Leave the original in place.
- Name the copy with the game, computer and date, such as
GameName-Desktop-2026-10-30. - Keep several dated copies for important progress instead of overwriting one archive.
- Store the copies on a different physical device from the installation disk.
Windows File History and macOS Time Machine can add versioned protection when the save folder is included in their scope. They supplement, rather than replace, a known-good manual copy and an independent drive.
How does Steam Deck and Proton change the backup process?
A Windows game running through Proton may store its saves inside the game’s compatibility prefix rather than in the Linux home folders you expect. The common pattern is steamapps/compatdata/<AppID>/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/, with the exact subfolder chosen by the game.
Valve documents Dynamic Cloud Sync for developers that support it: a suspended Deck session can upload at suspend, another device can download before launch, and the Deck can receive changes on wake. It is a developer feature, not a separate consumer switch that guarantees every title will synchronize instantly.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Do not synchronize machine-specific graphics settings between a desktop and a Deck. Valve specifically recommends Cloud saves while warning developers not to include display resolution and similar graphics configuration, because a desktop setting can be unsuitable on the Deck.
What are Steam Cloud file-size and quota limits?
Cloud limits are partly developer-controlled, so there is no single player-facing Steam-wide save quota. Valve’s Steamworks documentation gives these figures and qualifications:

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
| Limit or figure | Meaning | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| 100 MB | Maximum documented size for one ISteamRemoteStorage::FileWrite or FileWriteStreamWriteChunk call |
Valve says absolute Cloud file-size limits may change over time |
| 256 MB | Files at this size may use a non-optimal storage endpoint for the user’s location | Large files can have worse upload or download performance |
| Per-user, per-game byte and file-count quotas | Limits set by each developer in Steamworks App Admin | There is no published catalogue of one quota for every Steam game |
| 352 MB | An example quota reported for Resident Evil 2 | A 2025 community example, not a Valve-wide catalogue |
Normal save folders are usually much smaller than these service limits, but a game that stores screenshots, replays or large profiles can approach its developer-set quota.
Which tools help when Steam Cloud misses a game?
Third-party save managers are useful for titles without Cloud or for keeping local history. They do not make two conflicting saves mergeable, and each tool has a different failure mode.

| Tool | Useful for | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Ludusavi | Free, open-source GUI or CLI backups using a community manifest covering tens of thousands of games; local versioned archives and optional Rclone destinations | Cross-computer synchronization is still a backup-and-restore workflow that you schedule and control |
| Game Backup Monitor | Windows monitoring that compresses saves with 7-Zip when a game exits and keeps numbered history | Windows-first and dependent on correctly identifying the game process and save path |
| GameSave Manager | Windows relocation of save folders into Dropbox or OneDrive through a link | Live-folder synchronization can race a game that is still writing |
| Syncthing | Peer-to-peer folder mirroring between your devices | It is not save-aware; corruption can replicate as quickly as a good file |
| OpenSave | Peer-to-peer save synchronization without an account on Windows, Linux, Steam Deck and macOS since version 2.4 | Devices must be available to exchange the files |
| Hoard | Session-based snapshots, conflict awareness and tracking for userdata remote folders and Proton prefixes; EU-hosted managed service or self-hosting with S3-compatible storage |

OpenCloudSaves was archived in January 2025 and should not be chosen as a maintained save-sync service. Never point one backup tool at another tool’s archive directory: you can end up synchronizing a stale mirror instead of the live save.

Steam Backup game files is missing
Confirm that the game is fully downloaded, installed and patched through Steam. Titles using an external installer, updater or launcher may not expose a complete Steam backup; use their export method and manually copy saves.
Restore Game Backup cannot find my files
Choose the folder containing the finished backup archive, not the drive root. Sign in to the account that owns the game, check the destination library, and avoid special characters in the Steam installation path.
The restored game still downloads everything
For a folder transfer, place the copied game directory in the matching steamapps/common library before clicking Install. Then run Verify integrity of game files; Steam will download only files that are missing or different.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Steam Cloud is not syncing
Check both the global toggle under Steam > Settings > Cloud and the game-specific toggle under Properties > General. Quit the game normally so it can upload, confirm that the title actually supports Cloud, and inspect the account’s remote-storage page for files. If the game stores saves outside the watched path, Cloud cannot see them.
A Cloud conflict appears every time I switch devices
Stop launching the game repeatedly. Copy the local and Cloud files, identify whether the desktop and Deck are using different Proton paths, select one preserved version, and only then resume play with synchronization enabled.

The game launches but saves or content are missing
Run Verify integrity of game files and check the game’s real save location, publisher launcher folder and mod-manager profile. A successful installation restore does not imply that those separate files were in the archive.
What is the safest three-layer Steam backup plan?
- Installation layer: create a Steam Backup game files archive after updates finish, or copy the completed
steamapps/commonfolder for a live transfer. - Synchronization layer: enable Steam Cloud globally and per game when the store page and the developer support it, but treat Cloud as synchronization rather than historical backup.
- Save-history layer: copy the real save folder to a dated archive on a separate SSD or HDD. Keep multiple generations for important worlds and campaigns.
For frequent restores of large games, a portable SSD is faster and more convenient. A larger portable HDD is economical for archiving many titles. Whichever you choose, copy the completed archive off the system disk and periodically open a backup or restore a test save so you know the files are readable.
This combination addresses the three different failures that commonly get confused: a missing installation, a missing Cloud-supported save, and a deleted or corrupted save that synchronization alone cannot roll back.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I restore a Steam backup to a different Steam account?
The account must own the game for Steam’s restore and installation process to work normally. A copied game folder may still be detected by another account, but licensing, downloadable content and launch permissions are evaluated separately.
Will Steam Workshop subscriptions restore every mod automatically?
Re-subscribing can redownload items that are still available in Workshop. It will not restore a deleted Workshop item, a manually installed mod, a mod-manager profile or a custom load order, so archive those separately.
Why does my Deck show a Cloud conflict even though I did not change a save?
Desktop and Deck can use different Proton prefixes and machine metadata, and a game may update files during suspend or resume. Save both sides before choosing a conflict option, then inspect the game’s compatdata path and Cloud files rather than assuming the newest timestamp is correct.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIs a USB flash drive suitable for Steam game backups?
It can work for a small archive, but large game backups are more practical on a portable SSD or HDD with enough free capacity. Keep a second copy when the data matters, because one removable device can be lost or fail.
