Before installing a major ColorOS or OxygenOS update, make three copies whenever possible: a local backup made on the phone, a Google Account backup, and an off-phone copy of the local Backup folder plus irreplaceable media. A local backup left only in phone storage can be erased by a factory reset, wipe or flash, so it is not an independent safeguard. First identify your ColorOS or OxygenOS version, follow the matching menu path, wait for each backup to finish, copy the files to a computer or external drive, and verify that they open before starting the update. Major updates are intended to preserve user data, but a failed installation, troubleshooting reset or app incompatibility can still create a data-loss situation.
How many backups should I make before updating an OPPO or OnePlus phone?
Use separate storage locations rather than relying on one backup. The strongest practical setup is a local backup for device data, Google Account backup for supported Android settings and app data, and a manually copied archive on a computer or external drive.

| Method | Where the copy lives | Can a phone reset erase it? | Typical coverage | Work required |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Built-in local backup | Internal phone storage | Yes. A wipe, flash or factory reset can clear it. | Categories offered by ColorOS; OnePlus lists contacts, messages, call logs, system data and apps without app data. | Manual, on the phone |
| Google Account backup | Google cloud | Not by itself, although restoration depends on the destination phone and Android version. | Supported content, settings, Wi-Fi settings and supported app data. | Usually quick; requires the correct Google Account and network access |
| Computer or external-drive copy | PC, USB flash drive or portable SSD | No, provided the destination copy is complete and readable. | Local Backup folder plus personal media and documents you choose. |
Manual USB transfer and verification |
These layers protect different things. Cloud backup can help you restore settings after signing in, while a copied local folder gives you an independent file-level reserve if the phone has to be reset. Neither method guarantees that every app’s private database, login token or encrypted chat history will return automatically.
How do I check the ColorOS or OxygenOS version first?
Menu labels change between software releases, phone models and regions. Open Settings, then About Phone or About Device, and note the displayed ColorOS or OxygenOS version before beginning.

- On OPPO phones running ColorOS 15 or newer, use the current System & update path below.
- On OPPO phones with ColorOS 5.0 through 14, the backup controls may be under Additional settings or System settings.
- The OnePlus procedure below follows the Android 12 manual; newer releases can rename or move the same controls.
If a label is slightly different, look for the terms Back up, Back up & migrate, Local backup or Back up & reset instead of assuming the feature is missing.
How do I make a local backup on an OPPO phone?
ColorOS 15 and newer
- Open Settings.
- Tap System & update, then Back up & reset.
- Open Back up & migrate and choose Local backup.
- Tap New backup.
- Select the categories shown for your model, review the selection, and tap Start.
- Leave the phone on until the process reports completion. Do not restart or power it off during the backup.
The categories offered can differ by model and software build. Treat the completed local backup as a phone-resident working copy until you export it elsewhere.
ColorOS 5.0 through 14
- Open Settings.
- Tap Additional settings or System settings, depending on the model.
- Choose Back up and reset, then Back up & restore.
- Open Local backup and tap New backup.
- Select the data offered by the phone and start the backup.
- Wait for completion before leaving this screen or powering down.
OPPO’s older menu names are not identical on every handset or region. If the path does not appear, use Settings search for Local backup and confirm the software version again.
How do I make a local backup on a OnePlus phone?
The OnePlus Android 12 manual places the feature at Settings > System settings > Back up & migrate > Local backup.
- Open Settings and select System settings.
- Tap Back up & migrate, then Local backup.
- Create a new backup and select the available categories.
- Wait until it finishes; do not restart or turn the phone off during the process.
The manual identifies contacts, messages, call logs, system data and apps as local-backup categories, while noting that app data is excluded. That exclusion is important: an installed app may return after a restore without returning its private database or signed-in state.
How much space and equipment do I need?
Check the size of the phone’s Backup folder and the media you plan to copy, then make sure the computer, flash drive or portable SSD has more free space than that combined amount. Include room for documents, recordings and any second copy you intend to keep. The transfer itself does not require a special brand of accessory, but it does require a USB-C cable that carries data. A cable supplied only for charging may power the phone without exposing its storage to the computer.

How do I copy the local Backup folder to a computer or drive?
Copying the folder off the phone is the step that makes the local backup independent. Use a USB-C cable that supports data, not a charge-only cable, and make sure the destination has enough free space.
- Connect the phone to the computer with the data-capable USB cable.
- Unlock the phone and select File Transfer when the USB notification or connection prompt appears.
- On the computer, open the phone’s Internal shared storage.
- Copy the entire
Backupfolder to a clearly named folder on the computer or external drive. - Also copy irreplaceable photographs and videos from
DCIM, plus personal files inMovies,Musicand any other folders you use. - Open the destination and confirm that the folders and representative files are present and readable. Do not disconnect until the copy has finished.
OnePlus documents the same sequence: connect with a data cable, tap Transfer files, open Internal shared storage on the PC and copy Backup. OPPO likewise identifies DCIM, Movies and Music as media folders worth copying.
If you use a USB flash drive or portable SSD
Copy the files to the drive through a computer or a compatible phone-to-drive connection, then browse the drive and open several copied files. A transfer notification alone is not proof that every file arrived; check folder sizes or file counts where practical and safely eject the drive.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Why is a local backup stored only on the phone unsafe?
The phone’s internal storage is the same storage that a repair, factory reset or software recovery operation may erase. OPPO warns that backup files saved in phone storage are cleared after a factory reset and advises exporting them to a computer first. Its computer guidance also says phone-storage data, including the backup, is erased when the phone is flashed, wiped or reset. OnePlus gives the same warning for local backup data.
Therefore, do not begin a major update with the only copy still under internal storage. A computer, flash drive or portable SSD provides recovery independence that the local menu alone cannot provide.

How do I turn on Google Account backup?
Google Account backup adds a cloud layer for supported content, device settings, Wi-Fi settings and supported app data. On current OPPO instructions, the path is Settings > System & update > Back up & reset > Google accounts > Back up now.
- Confirm that the phone is signed in to the Google Account you intend to use for restoration.
- Connect to Wi-Fi if available, then open the Google backup controls using the path above.
- Tap Back up now and wait for the status or recent-backup time to update.
- Verify that the account shown is the correct one before starting the software update.
Google says Android backups can be restored to the original phone or another Android phone, but the exact restoration experience varies by phone and Android version. A backup made on a higher Android version cannot be restored to a phone running a lower Android version. Cloud backup is consequently a useful layer, not proof that every application or encrypted data store is covered.

Check critical apps individually before updating. Local-backup and Google-backup systems do not promise universal capture of private databases, authenticator tokens, downloaded offline content or encrypted chat histories.
- Use an app’s own Export, Backup, Sync or Transfer command when available.
- For authenticator software, follow its documented account-transfer or encrypted-export process and verify that the recovery method works.
- For messaging apps, check whether the service has a separate cloud backup and whether it requires a password, encryption key or the same account.
- For notes, password managers and other sensitive stores, confirm synchronization on another device or export an encrypted copy according to the app’s instructions.
- Do not assume that reinstalling an app from Google Play restores its private files.
After exporting, keep the file with the computer or external-drive archive and protect it with the app’s required password or key.
What can each backup restore?
The local copy is useful when the same phone needs its contacts, messages, call history or system information restored, subject to the categories that the handset offers. OnePlus specifically lists apps but excludes their app data. Google backup is convenient during Android setup and can restore supported settings, Wi-Fi information and supported app data after you sign in, but the available items depend on the phone and Android version. The computer copy is the most direct way to retain personal files: you can see the folders, open media and preserve documents even if the phone must be wiped.
These methods are complementary rather than interchangeable. A Google backup does not automatically contain every photograph in internal storage, and copying Backup does not automatically copy DCIM or other media folders. Plan the restore you would actually need and make sure at least one copy covers each critical item.

Will a major software update delete my data?
A normal over-the-air update is designed to retain user data, but no update is a substitute for a recovery plan. Troubleshooting may require a wipe or factory reset, and a failed flash or incompatible app can leave you dependent on your backups. The specific risk is highest for a local backup that has never left internal storage, because the reset needed to recover the phone can erase that copy as well.
Keep the phone charged, use a stable network, and avoid interrupting either the backup or the installation. If the updater reports an error, stop and check the copied archive before attempting a reset or manual flash.
What are the most common pre-update mistakes?
- Using the wrong menu path: ColorOS labels differ from one release to another, so identify the version first.
- Leaving the only local copy on the handset: a reset, wipe or flash can erase it.
- Choosing charge-only USB mode: the computer will not show internal storage until you select File Transfer or Transfer files.
- Using a charge-only cable: power delivery does not prove that data transfer is supported.
- Assuming the Backup folder contains media: copy
DCIM,Movies,Musicand other personal folders separately. - Ignoring app-specific protection: authenticators and encrypted chats may require a key, password or in-app migration.
- Disconnecting early: wait for the operating system’s completion message, then inspect the destination.
- Deleting the archive immediately: keep it until the updated phone has been checked.
What should I do if the backup menu or USB transfer does not work?
The menu is not where the instructions say
Recheck the version under About Phone or About Device. Search Settings for backup or migrate, then try the ColorOS path for your version rather than the newer path shown in another guide. Model and regional labels can differ.
The local backup will not complete
- Keep the phone powered on and do not restart it during the operation.
- Free internal storage if the phone reports insufficient space.
- Run the backup again and note which category, if any, causes the failure.
- Use Google Account backup and app-specific exports as additional layers instead of treating a partial local backup as complete.
The computer does not show the phone
- Unlock the phone after connecting it.
- Open the USB notification and choose File Transfer or Transfer files, not charge-only mode.
- Try a known data-capable USB-C cable and another USB port.
- Reconnect only after the phone is unlocked, then check Internal shared storage again.
Once the folder appears, copy it and verify the destination before disconnecting. If a computer still cannot read the phone, use another computer or a compatible external-storage workflow rather than assuming the archive exists.
How do I verify everything after the update?
Let the phone complete its first startup and sign in normally. Check a few contacts, recent messages, call history, photographs, videos and documents rather than relying only on a “backup complete” notification. Open the applications you use for work, banking, authentication and messaging, and confirm that their own accounts or migration records are available. If an app requests a new sign-in, use the documented recovery method instead of deleting the old archive.
Keep the computer or external drive untouched until these checks pass. If the update causes a later problem, the archive remains available for a reset or replacement phone. Once you are satisfied, retain at least one copy according to your normal personal backup routine.

What is the safest pre-update sequence?
Use this order so every later step has a recoverable earlier copy.
- Charge the phone and connect it to Wi-Fi where practical.
- Check the ColorOS or OxygenOS version and select the matching local-backup path.
- Run the built-in local backup and wait for completion without restarting or powering off.
- Run Google Account backup and confirm the account and recent-backup status.
- Connect a computer with a data-capable USB-C cable and choose File Transfer.
- Copy the complete
Backupfolder from internal shared storage. - Copy irreplaceable photos, videos, documents and recordings, including the relevant media folders.
- Open the destination and verify representative files and folders.
- Complete exports or sync procedures for critical apps, authenticators and encrypted data.
- Only after those checks begin the major ColorOS or OxygenOS update.
Keep the computer or external drive untouched until you have confirmed that the phone starts normally after the update. If the update later requires a reset, the off-phone archive is the copy that remains available.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use the same Google Account backup on another Android phone?
Yes, Google says a backup can be restored to the original phone or another Android phone. The available data and setup screens vary by device and Android version, and a backup from a newer Android version cannot be restored to a phone running an older one.
Does copying the Backup folder also save my photos and videos?
Only if you copy the media folders separately. Include DCIM, Movies, Music and any folders containing personal recordings or documents; the local Backup folder should not be treated as a complete media archive.
Should I keep the off-phone backup after the update succeeds?
Keep it until you have opened the updated phone, checked essential contacts and files, and confirmed that important apps work. Retaining the archive through that verification period gives you a fallback if the update exposes a problem later.
Why did an app reinstall without its old data?
OnePlus’ local-backup description excludes app data, and Google restoration depends on what the app supports. Use the app’s own export, sync or migration feature for private databases, authenticator records and encrypted chats instead of relying on reinstall alone.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Can I rely only on Google Account backup?
It is useful for supported settings and app data, but it is not a complete substitute for an off-phone file copy. Personal media, app-specific exports and encrypted data may require separate handling, and restoration varies by device and Android version.
What kind of USB cable is required?
Use a USB-C cable that supports data transfer. After connecting, unlock the phone and choose File Transfer or Transfer files; a charge-only cable will not expose the Backup folder to the computer.
The Bottom Line
Before a major OPPO or OnePlus update, create the built-in local backup, run Google Account backup, and copy the local Backup folder plus irreplaceable media to a computer or external drive. Verify the off-phone files and handle critical apps separately before installing the update.
