Before you change a launcher, install different software, or reset a Samsung Galaxy, make at least two backups: one with Samsung Cloud and one with Google. Add a Smart Switch or cable copy when practical, and verify that each backup completed before you proceed. The services cover overlapping but different data, so relying on only one can leave gaps.

The safest approach is layered: preserve account-based data in both cloud services, create a copy you can inspect locally, and keep the original phone unchanged until restoration is proven. This matters whether you are only replacing One UI’s home screen, moving to another Galaxy, preparing for repair, or making a more disruptive software change.

What should you back up before changing a Galaxy?

Back up your data in layers, then confirm you can access the accounts needed to restore it. A cloud backup is convenient, while a local copy or device-to-device transfer gives you another route to your files. No single method covers every category or every app.

  • Samsung Cloud: Samsung-specific categories can include settings and home-screen layout, along with calls, messages, contacts, calendar, apps, and voice recordings. Availability and coverage vary.
  • Google backup: Covers core Android data such as apps and app data, call history, contacts, device settings, and SMS/MMS. App data restoration is not guaranteed for every app.
  • Google Photos: Photos and videos are backed up separately when Google Photos backup is enabled.
  • Smart Switch or a cable copy: Provides an additional way to transfer or back up data, including to another device or, where supported, external storage.
  • Launcher-specific export: A launcher may offer its own layout or configuration export. Use it for settings that a general Android or Samsung backup may not understand.

Before starting, confirm your Samsung and Google account credentials, screen-lock PIN or password, Wi-Fi access, and available cloud storage. Google Accounts include 15 GB of no-charge storage, shared across Google services; check the account’s available space rather than assuming all of it is free for a device backup. A cloud backup is only useful if you can sign in to the same account after the change.

Make a short inventory of irreplaceable information before you tap any backup button. Include recent photos, downloaded documents, recordings, messages you must retain, contacts, authenticator access, and data inside apps that do not use ordinary Android backup. This inventory becomes your restoration checklist and helps you decide whether a second local copy is necessary.

How do you back up a Samsung Galaxy with Samsung Cloud?

Use Samsung Cloud for its available Galaxy backup categories, including settings and home-screen layout on supported devices. The exact categories and menus can differ by country, carrier, model, and app version.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings > Samsung account > Samsung Cloud.
  2. Tap Back up this phone > Back up data.
  3. Select the categories you want to include from those available on your phone.
  4. Tap Back up now and wait for the service to report completion.
  5. Check the backup date and confirm that it is associated with the Samsung account you intend to use after the change.

Samsung lists calls, messages, phone contacts, calendar, settings, home-screen layout, apps, and voice recordings among supported categories. That list is not a promise that every item on every Galaxy will be backed up: Samsung says support varies by country, carrier, model, and app version. Synchronized contacts and calendar entries, Secure Folder data, some oversized or failed messages, unsupported app files, and some themes and wallpapers are among the exclusions described by Samsung Cloud.

Because synchronized contacts and calendar entries may be treated differently from locally stored entries, check where your important records live. If an item is already synchronized with an account, verify that it appears in that account’s service rather than assuming the Samsung Cloud snapshot is its only copy. Likewise, do not assume a theme, wallpaper, or app file will reappear simply because the home-screen layout is listed.

Stay on the backup screen until it reports completion. A tap on Back up now starts a process; it is not confirmation that every selected category has finished. Record the displayed date and account, especially if more than one Samsung account has been used on the phone.

How do you run Google backup and protect photos?

Run Google’s device backup separately from Samsung Cloud, and check Google Photos independently for media. The settings labels may vary by Android version and device configuration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings > Google > All services > Backup.
  2. Choose the Google account you plan to use when restoring.
  3. Tap Back up now and wait for the backup status to update.
  4. Open Google Photos and confirm that backup is enabled and recent photos and videos are present.

Google lists apps and app data, call history, contacts, device settings, and SMS/MMS among the data included in Android backup. Google Photos handles photos and videos when its backup feature is enabled; do not assume that a Google device backup alone has copied your media. Google also warns that not all apps can back up or restore all settings and data.

A Google backup can take up to 24 hours to complete, according to Google. If you have just started one, do not treat the initial tap as proof that it is finished: check the status and date before changing software or resetting the phone. If your change is scheduled soon, allow that possible delay rather than starting a reset immediately.

  • TOUGH & TRUSTED***: Files stay secure, no matter the terrain; Samsung's flash memory technology makes the Type-C a trustworthy drive to store your valuable data; It's waterproof, shock-proof, magnet-proof, temperature-proof, and X-ray-proof body, plus it's backed by a 5-year limited warranty

Open Google Photos and look for recent images and videos, not merely the fact that backup is switched on. If the latest items are missing, leave the original phone intact and investigate the Photos backup status. For files that are especially important, also keep a local copy or another service so that one account’s storage or sign-in problem does not become the only point of failure.

Should you use Smart Switch, a cable, or cloud backup?

Use both cloud services for account-based recovery and add Smart Switch or a cable copy when you want another transfer or backup path. The best extra method depends on whether you are moving to another device, preserving a local copy, or working with a Galaxy model that supports external storage.

Method What it is useful for Important qualification
Samsung Cloud Galaxy backup categories such as settings and home-screen layout, when available. Categories and eligibility vary by country, carrier, model, and app version; some data is excluded.
Google backup Core Android data and account-based restore during setup. Not all apps restore all settings or data; photos and videos rely on Google Photos configuration.
Smart Switch Backing up or transferring data, including between devices. Available transfer paths and external-storage support depend on the Galaxy model and storage device.
USB cable transfer Direct device-to-device transfer or a practical way to move data without relying only on Wi-Fi. Use a data-capable cable; a USB-C-to-USB-C cable is useful when both devices support it.
Temporary Cloud Backup Short-term protection before a reset, repair, or device switch. Samsung says retention is up to 30 days; availability depends on country, carrier, model, and software eligibility.

Google documents transfer by cable or Wi-Fi, and Samsung describes Smart Switch as a way to back up or transfer data. A USB-C-to-USB-C cable is not mandatory for every backup: it is an option for compatible devices and helps when making a direct transfer. If you want an independent local copy, check that your Galaxy supports the external storage device you plan to use.

A cable transfer is often useful when you are moving directly to another phone because the two devices can communicate without waiting for a cloud upload and download. It is not a substitute for checking what was copied: inspect the destination for contacts, messages, photos, documents, and other items on your inventory. Use a cable marketed for data transfer, not one that only supplies power.

Smart Switch can be the practical choice when you want Samsung’s transfer workflow or a backup to supported storage. Its available paths and the ability to use external storage depend on the Galaxy model and the storage device. Treat compatibility as a requirement to check before the day of the software change, not as an assumption.

Cloud copies are recoverable through an account and can be useful if the original phone is lost or unusable, but they depend on account access, network access, storage limits, and service eligibility. A local copy gives you more direct control and can be inspected before the change, but it must be kept safe and readable. For valuable data, using both approaches addresses different failure modes.

When is Temporary Cloud Backup worth using?

Consider Samsung’s Temporary Cloud Backup if you are about to reset, send the phone for repair, or switch devices and your Galaxy is eligible. Samsung says it keeps data stored on the Galaxy in Samsung Cloud for up to 30 days, making it a temporary safety net rather than a permanent archive.

Do not count on the feature being present on every device. Samsung’s stated eligibility depends on country, carrier, model, and software. Check whether it appears as an option on your Galaxy and verify its status before relying on it. The 30-day period is a retention limit, not a reason to postpone a permanent backup of files you need long term.

  • 【OTG Function】:Support nearly all mobile phones which support OTG function, and very easy to operate

This option is particularly useful when a reset or repair is imminent and you need a short window in which to retrieve the phone’s contents. It does not remove the need to check Google Photos, export launcher settings, or preserve app-specific data that Samsung Cloud does not include.

How do you verify the backups before changing software?

Verify each copy while the original phone still works. A backup that has not finished, is tied to an account you cannot access, or omits a critical app’s data may not help when you need to restore.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Confirm Samsung Cloud shows completion and the expected account and backup date.
  • Confirm Google Backup shows a recent completion status for the intended account; allow for Google’s stated possible completion time of up to 24 hours.
  • Open Google Photos and check that recent photos and videos are visible if you rely on it for media.
  • Inspect your Smart Switch, cable, or external-storage copy and make sure important files are actually present.
  • Identify app-specific data that matters, such as authenticator access or essential app content, and verify that you have a recovery method for it.
  • Confirm you know the screen-lock PIN or password and both account passwords before signing out, resetting, or changing software.
  • Check that the destination storage has enough capacity and that the local copy can be opened from another device when practical.

For an app that offers its own export or backup, use that facility where appropriate. Google’s warning that not all apps restore all settings and data means there is no universal guarantee for third-party app data. Banking, authenticator, messaging, password-manager, and work apps may require their own sign-in or recovery process even when the app itself is restored.

Do not erase the old phone merely because a setup screen offered a restore. Open the restored contacts, messages, photos, documents, and essential apps. Compare the result with your inventory. If something is missing, the untouched original may still let you export it or repeat the backup.

What should you save before changing launchers?

Samsung Cloud lists home-screen layout among its supported backup categories, but that should not be treated as a guarantee that another launcher’s custom setup will return. Preserve launcher-specific configuration separately when the launcher provides an export or backup feature.

Before switching, look for an option in the launcher’s own settings to export its layout or configuration. Check for other items you would need to rebuild, such as icon-pack choices, widgets, and automation settings. The available export features depend on the launcher; Google’s general backup does not guarantee that every third-party app’s settings or data will restore.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Take note of which launcher is currently the default and how to return to it through system settings. If the new launcher does not reproduce your arrangement, you can use the saved export or manually rebuild it from your notes. Keep any launcher backup file in the local copy as well as in cloud storage if the launcher supports a file-based export.

A launcher change alone may not require a full reset, but the same precautions apply if you are also changing One UI, installing different software, or altering the device in a way that could erase data. The more disruptive the change, the more valuable it is to have both account backups and a copy you can inspect.

How do you restore after the change?

Restore using the same Samsung and Google accounts that created the backups, then use your local copy or Smart Switch for anything that remains. Keep the original state untouched until you have checked the data that matters.

  1. During device setup, sign in to the Samsung and Google accounts used for the backups.
  2. Choose the relevant Samsung Cloud or Google backup when the setup process offers restoration.
  3. After setup, use Smart Switch or your cable/local copy to bring over remaining files as needed.
  4. Reinstall or open essential apps and complete any app-specific sign-in or recovery steps.
  5. Import the launcher’s saved layout or configuration, then restore icon packs, widgets, and automation settings as needed.
  6. Check contacts, messages, photos, documents, authenticator access, and critical app data before erasing or discarding the original state.

Google describes restoring data from cloud backup as an alternative to transferring from another device by cable or Wi-Fi. Which data is available after setup depends on what each service backed up and what the apps support during restore.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Restore in layers rather than expecting one button to recreate every detail. Samsung Cloud and Google may restore overlapping contacts, settings, or messages, while Smart Switch supplies files that were not in either cloud snapshot. Check for duplicates or missing items and use the copy that contains the authoritative version.

Keep the original phone, its local storage, and any temporary backup available until your checklist is complete. Temporary Cloud Backup lasts up to 30 days, so retrieve anything you need within that period. Once contacts, messages, photos, documents, authenticator access, and critical app data are confirmed, you can safely retire the old state.

Common pitfalls that can make a backup look complete

  • Relying on one cloud: Samsung Cloud and Google backup have different coverage, so one may omit a category the other handles.
  • Assuming photos are included: Google device backup does not replace Google Photos; verify Photos separately.
  • Ignoring account access: A cloud snapshot cannot be restored if you cannot sign in to the account that owns it.
  • Expecting every app to return exactly: Google explicitly says not all apps back up or restore every setting and data item.
  • Forgetting exclusions: Secure Folder data, some messages, unsupported app files, and some themes or wallpapers may not be included in Samsung Cloud.
  • Using a charge-only cable: A cable transfer requires a data-capable cable and compatible devices.
  • Discarding the old phone too early: Verification must happen before erasing the original state.
  • Treating temporary storage as permanent: Samsung’s Temporary Cloud Backup is retained for up to 30 days and is subject to eligibility.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I back up my Galaxy without Wi-Fi?

A direct cable transfer is an option for compatible devices, and Smart Switch may also support transfer paths beyond cloud backup. The exact choices depend on your model and setup; a cloud backup requires access to the relevant account and network.

Does a Samsung backup include Secure Folder?

Samsung Cloud’s listed exclusions include Secure Folder data. Treat that data as separate and verify an appropriate way to preserve it before a reset or software change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will my Google backup restore the same apps automatically?

Google backup can include apps and app data, but an app may not restore every setting or data item. After restoration, open essential apps and check their account access and content individually.

What happens if I cannot sign in to the account used for backup?

A cloud copy depends on being able to access its account during restoration. Recover and test access to the relevant Samsung and Google accounts before making the change rather than waiting until setup.

Will my home screen come back after a reset?

Samsung lists home-screen layout among supported Samsung Cloud categories on eligible devices, but availability varies. A third-party launcher’s layout, widgets, icon packs, and automations remain app-dependent, so export them separately when the launcher offers that option.

Should I use Smart Switch or Samsung Cloud?

Use Samsung Cloud for its available Galaxy categories and account-based recovery, then add Smart Switch or a cable copy for a second path. Smart Switch availability and external-storage support depend on the Galaxy model and storage device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need a USB-C cable to transfer everything?

No. Google also documents Wi-Fi transfer and cloud restoration. A USB-C-to-USB-C data cable is a useful option for compatible devices, especially when you want direct transfer or a local copy; it is not required for every backup.

How much Google storage is available for free?

A Google Account includes 15 GB of no-charge storage shared across Google services. Check the account’s remaining capacity before starting, because photos and other files may already use part of it.

How long can a Google backup take?

Google says a backup can take up to 24 hours to complete. Check the status and date rather than assuming the process finished immediately after you selected Back up now.

How long does Temporary Cloud Backup keep my data?

Samsung says Temporary Cloud Backup keeps Galaxy data in Samsung Cloud for up to 30 days. It is available only on supported country, carrier, model, and software combinations and should not replace a permanent copy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Run Samsung Cloud and Google backup, verify both accounts and completion dates, confirm recent media in Google Photos, and add a Smart Switch or cable copy when practical. Export launcher-specific settings, preserve excluded or app-specific data separately, and keep the original Galaxy untouched until restoration has been checked.
