Back up your Minecraft world before opening it with new mods, then test the mods on a separate copy. In Java Edition, use Singleplayer → select the world → Edit → Make Backup; Minecraft creates a dated ZIP file. In Bedrock Edition, make a manual backup or export the world first—on Windows, an export creates an .mcworld file. Keep the backup outside the active game folder and save another copy somewhere separate, so a damaged modded world does not put your only copy at risk.
Why should I back up my world before installing mods?
A backup gives you a way back to the world as it was before the changes. Mods and add-ons can change how a world loads or behaves; if something goes wrong, you can restore the untouched copy rather than trying to reconstruct your progress.

Make the backup before opening the world with the new mods. Keep the original world unmodified, and use a duplicate for testing. A world seed is not a substitute: it can reproduce terrain, but not your builds, inventory, or other progress.
- Save a backup somewhere outside the active world saves folder.
- Keep a second copy on another device or in another location, such as an external drive.
- Before relying on a backup, check that the archive or exported file opens and that the copied world appears in the expected world list.
How do I back up a Java Edition world?
Java Edition includes a built-in backup command for an individual world. The command creates a dated .zip file that you can find using the game’s Open Backups Folder option.

- Launch Minecraft Java Edition.
- Choose Singleplayer.
- Select the world you plan to mod, then choose Edit.
- Choose Make Backup and wait for the backup to finish.
- Return to the world options and choose Open Backups Folder to locate the dated ZIP.
- Copy that ZIP outside the active Minecraft game directory. Make a second copy on a separate device or at another location.
Do not treat the ZIP in the backups folder as your only safety copy. Keeping a copy outside the live game directory protects it from accidental changes made while managing worlds or profiles. Open or inspect the archive before you begin, and confirm that it is present at the separate location where you intend to keep it.

The default Java saves folder is %appdata%.minecraftsaves on Windows and ~/Library/Application Support/minecraft/saves on macOS. A launcher profile can use a different game directory, so the default path may not be where a particular installation stores its worlds.
If you use a separate launcher profile or instance, check that profile’s game directory before copying a world. The world you intend to protect should be the one shown in the profile you plan to use, not merely a folder with a familiar name in the default location.
How do I back up a Bedrock Edition world?
Bedrock does not use Java Edition’s Make Backup button. Create a manual world backup or export before enabling add-ons or making other changes. The exact manual steps depend on the platform; on Windows, exporting a world produces an .mcworld file.

What should I do on Windows?
Export the world before changing it and keep the resulting .mcworld file outside the active Minecraft world data. Make another copy in a separate location. Bedrock world data is stored under com.mojang/minecraftWorlds, although the parent path varies by operating system; an export is a portable backup artifact rather than a reason to assume every installation uses the same folder path.
What about Android, iPhone or iPad, and consoles?
Use the platform’s available manual backup or supported cloud-save method before changing the world. The exact steps differ between Windows, Android, iPhone and iPad, and consoles, so do not apply a Windows folder path or export procedure to another platform. Confirm that the backup or cloud save is available before opening the world with changes.
If you plan to rely on a platform cloud save, check that the relevant world is covered and that the save has completed. A cloud save is useful only if it contains a recoverable version from before the change; it should not be confused with a newly synced, already-modified world.
How do I keep a modded world separate from the original?
For Java Edition, use a separate launcher profile or instance for the modded setup, and copy the world into that profile’s saves folder. Leave the vanilla world untouched. A separate profile is a practical boundary because mod loaders run when the game starts; it helps keep the modded and unmodded copies apart.

- Finish and store the pre-mod backup before starting the new modded setup.
- Create or choose a separate profile or instance for the mods. A profile manager such as CurseForge is one possible example, not a requirement.
- Locate that profile’s game directory and its
savesfolder. - Copy the world you want to test into the modded profile’s saves folder. Do not move or overwrite the untouched vanilla world.
- Launch the modded profile and verify that the copied world appears in its world list before opening it.
Keep the backup ZIP and the vanilla copy distinct from the modded copy. If you later test a different mod set, do not assume that a world opened with one set is an untouched starting point for another. The guidance for separate profiles also recommends zipping a world before opening it with different mods.

Before testing mods, verify three things: the backup file exists, it opens, and the world appears in the saves list for the profile or platform where you intend to use it. Also confirm that at least one copy is stored somewhere other than the active game directory.
- Java: use Open Backups Folder to locate the dated ZIP, then check that the archive opens and preserve a separate copy.
- Bedrock on Windows: confirm that the exported
.mcworldfile is present and can be opened. - Other Bedrock platforms: confirm that the manual backup or supported cloud save is available before changing the world.
- Separate profile: confirm that the copied world—not the original—appears in the modded profile’s saves list.
Do not overwrite your only original while testing. If the expected world is missing or the backup cannot be opened, stop and locate or create a usable pre-change backup before proceeding.
How do I restore a world if a mod corrupts it?
Quit the game first. Remove or rename the damaged modded copy, then restore the pre-mod backup into the appropriate game or world location and launch that restored copy. Keep the damaged copy separate if you need to distinguish it from the recovered world; do not overwrite the only backup during recovery.

Restore a Java Edition backup
- Quit Minecraft.
- Find the dated pre-mod ZIP using the backup location you recorded or Open Backups Folder.
- Remove or rename the damaged modded world copy so it cannot be mistaken for the clean copy.
- Restore the world from the pre-mod backup and place the restored copy in the saves folder for the profile where you want to play it.
- Launch Minecraft and check that the restored world appears before opening it.
Restore a Bedrock Edition backup
Use the manual backup or supported platform cloud save you made before the change. On Windows, the exported backup is an .mcworld file. Remove or rename the damaged copy, restore the saved world, then check that it appears in the world list before playing. On Android, iPhone or iPad, and consoles, use the platform-appropriate backup or cloud-save process; the exact steps vary.
What if I only have the seed?
Creating a world from a seed can give you familiar terrain, but it does not restore progress. Builds, inventory, and other world progress cannot be recovered from a seed alone.

The essential difference is that Java has an in-game backup button, while Bedrock relies on manual exports or backups and supported platform cloud saves. The backup format, storage path, isolation method, and restoration route also depend on edition and platform.

Use the workflow for the edition and platform you actually play. Java’s button and folder instructions do not apply to Bedrock, and Bedrock’s Windows export does not establish a universal file path or procedure for mobile devices and consoles.

Can I recover a Minecraft world from its seed after losing the save?
A seed can recreate familiar terrain, but it does not contain the world’s saved progress. It cannot restore builds, inventory, or other changes made during play.
Can I use a Java backup ZIP as a Bedrock world export?
The formats described here are edition-specific: Java’s in-game backup is a dated ZIP, while a Windows Bedrock export is an MCWORLD file. Use a backup made for the edition and platform where the world is stored.
Should I make a new backup after testing mods?
A copy made after testing may preserve the modded state, but it is not a replacement for the pre-mod version. Keep the original pre-change backup separately so you still have a rollback point.
