AI can help you find subscription clues in email, but it cannot reliably prove that a charge is still active or cancel the contract for you. Use it to build a read-only list of likely subscriptions, verify each one against the merchant, app store or card statement, and then cancel through the service that controls the subscription. Email unsubscribe, service cancellation and stopping a recurring card payment are three separate actions.
What can AI find in a subscription audit?
An AI-assisted audit can classify messages and extract details such as the provider, recurring cost, billing cadence, renewal date and cancellation instructions. Those details turn a crowded inbox into a shortlist to investigate; they are not a complete or authoritative record of every payment you make.

Peamo describes extracting the provider, recurring cost, renewal date and category from email. That is a useful model for the output of an audit, not a guarantee that every message or subscription will be found. A service may send receipts to another address, use a different sender name, or have no recent message in the inbox you scan. A message can also be old or promotional rather than evidence of a current charge.
The goal is therefore not to give an AI permission to cancel things. It is to use email as a source of leads, verify the leads independently, and keep a record of what you actually changed.

How should I separate subscription emails from proof of a charge?
Start by separating messages that advertise or manage email subscriptions from messages that document a transaction. Gmail’s guidance treats promotional and newsletter messages as subscription messages, while receipts and one-time passwords are transactional. The distinction matters because an unsubscribe control for marketing mail does not establish that a paid service has ended.

For each possible subscription, look for multiple pieces of evidence where possible: a recent receipt or renewal notice, a matching merchant account, and a corresponding statement entry. Treat a single marketing email as a reason to check, not as proof of a bill.

Use an AI tool only to organize evidence if you can keep it in read-only mode. Before connecting an account, inspect its requested permissions and data practices; if the scope or handling is unclear, do not connect that mailbox.
1. Choose the least-privileged method
Prefer a connection that can read messages but cannot send, reply, forward, label, move, archive or delete them. Peamo states that it only reads and does not perform those mailbox actions. That is a vendor statement, not an independent guarantee, so check the permission screen and the tool’s current privacy terms yourself.
Google strongly encourages users to review the permissions screen before granting access to a non-Google application. Confirm which account is being connected and what access is requested. If the permission description grants broader control than the audit needs, choose another method or do the review without connecting a third party.
2. Check where email content goes
Find out whether the tool processes full message bodies or attachments outside your mailbox, which AI provider handles the content, where data is stored, how long it is retained, and how you can delete it. Peamo says email content is processed by Anthropic for classification and that structured details, rather than full email content, are retained after a scan. Recheck the provider’s statement before connecting a live inbox because privacy terms and processing arrangements can change.

Do not assume that a product’s “AI” label means messages stay local or that attachments are excluded. If you cannot establish what content leaves the mailbox or how long it remains available, avoid giving the tool access to sensitive email.
3. Define the extraction fields
Ask the tool to return one row per possible service with the evidence needed to verify it. Useful fields are:
- Provider or merchant name as it appears in the message.
- Message date and message type, such as receipt, renewal notice, invoice, promotion or trial welcome.
- Amount and currency exactly as shown, if present.
- Billing cadence, if the message states one.
- Next renewal date, if stated.
- Cancellation instructions or a link described in the message, without asking the AI to click it.
- A short explanation of the message evidence and any uncertainty.
Require the AI to mark missing details as unknown rather than infer them. A receipt can show a one-time purchase; an offer can quote a price that does not match a later plan; a message may say “renewal” without specifying the next date. Do not let a guessed cadence or amount become a fact in your audit.
4. Keep the first pass read-only
Have the tool classify and summarize messages, not respond to them or change mailbox state. The output should be a working list for you to check. Do not treat an AI-generated cancellation instruction as authorization to follow a link or provide credentials; go to the known merchant account or the appropriate subscription-management page yourself.
What should I search for if I do not use an AI connector?
You can use your mailbox’s search or classification features to gather the same evidence without granting a separate app access. Search in batches for terms associated with billing and renewals, then inspect likely hits rather than assuming every match is a subscription.
- Search for terms such as “receipt,” “invoice,” “renewal,” “subscription,” “billing,” “payment,” “trial” and “membership.”
- Review messages from known merchants and app stores, including older messages that may reveal the original service or plan.
- Separate recurring billing messages from marketing campaigns and one-time purchase receipts.
- Record the message date and the exact amount, cadence and next date only when the message states them.
- Search any other email account that may receive billing notices; a single inbox cannot reveal messages sent elsewhere.
Search terms are a starting point, not a detection guarantee. A merchant may use an unfamiliar sender name or send a notice without the terms you search for. Compare what you find with your accounts and statements instead of treating search results as an exhaustive inventory.

How do Gmail and Outlook help find email subscriptions?
Gmail and Outlook.com have built-in ways to manage some subscription-related email, but their views focus on senders and messages. They should not be read as a definitive list of active paid contracts.

Gmail: use Manage subscriptions for sender mail
Google announced Gmail’s Manage subscriptions feature on July 8, 2025. The view groups active email subscriptions and sorts senders by recent message volume; it can send an unsubscribe request on your behalf. Google notes that availability is gradual, so the option may not appear for every user or account yet.
Google’s Gmail Help says it can take a few days for a sender to unsubscribe you. Its guidance says covered senders should process one-click unsubscribe requests within 48 hours. Those statements describe email unsubscribe handling, not cancellation of a paid plan. If you block a sender instead, future messages are routed to spam; blocking does not automatically submit an unsubscribe request.
Outlook.com: inspect the Subscriptions setting
In Outlook.com, open Settings > Mail > Subscriptions. Microsoft says Outlook.com examines incoming emails to determine whether they are part of a subscription from the sender. For a listed sender, choose Unsubscribe to request fewer or no messages, or Block if you want future mail routed away from your inbox.
Neither choice should be treated as a merchant cancellation. Use the sender-management setting to control email; verify and cancel a paid service through the merchant or platform that manages it.
How do I verify a possible subscription before cancelling it?
For every candidate in the AI or mailbox list, verify whether the contract and payment are actually current before taking action. An inbox hit is a lead, not proof that a payment authority remains active.

- Match the provider. Confirm that the sender corresponds to a service you recognize. A brand name in an email may differ from the merchant descriptor on a statement, so check the account or transaction details before deciding they match.
- Check the merchant account. Sign in through the service’s normal account route and look for the plan, billing status, next renewal date and cancellation options. Do not rely on an old email link as the only route.
- Check platform-managed subscriptions. If you bought through an app store or another platform, inspect that platform’s subscription page as well as the merchant email. The billing relationship may be managed where you purchased, rather than in the app’s ordinary account settings.
- Compare the statement. Look for a recent transaction matching the provider, amount and billing period. This helps distinguish a current recurring payment from a trial notice, an old receipt or a one-time purchase.
- Resolve discrepancies first. If the email, account and statement disagree, contact the merchant through its official support route before acting on an uncertain match.
Keep the distinction between the evidence and your conclusion visible. For example, “renewal email dated May 3, next date not stated” is more useful than turning an unstated date into a confident prediction.

Choose the action that matches the problem. Unsubscribe controls marketing messages, merchant cancellation ends the service contract, and asking a card issuer to stop a recurring card payment stops a payment instruction. These actions are related, but they are not interchangeable.

The Financial Conduct Authority explains that recurring card payments, also called continuous payment authorities, differ from direct debits and standing orders. It says a card issuer can stop a recurring card payment when asked. However, stopping the payment instruction does not necessarily end the underlying contract: contractual amounts may still be owed. If you ask your issuer to stop a payment, also resolve the service contract with the merchant and keep evidence of that cancellation.
What should I put in the audit record?
A compact record makes it easier to distinguish a suspected subscription from a completed cancellation and to catch an unexpected later charge. Keep only the information you need, and store it somewhere appropriate for its sensitivity.

After cancelling, retain the confirmation and check the next statement for an unexpected charge. If a charge appears after the stated effective date, contact the merchant with the confirmation details; contact your issuer as appropriate if the payment instruction needs to be stopped or the charge is disputed.
What are the main failure modes in an AI subscription audit?
The most common mistake is treating classification as financial verification. A useful audit makes uncertainty explicit and routes each uncertain result to a check rather than an automatic action.
- A promotional message appears as a subscription. Check for a receipt, account status or statement entry; do not infer a paid plan from an offer alone.
- An old receipt appears current. Compare the message date with the merchant account and recent statement before concluding that billing continues.
- The amount or cadence is missing. Mark it unknown. Do not let AI infer a monthly or annual interval from a single message.
- A mailbox feature offers Unsubscribe. Use it to address unwanted sender mail, then handle the paid contract separately if one exists.
- Blocking is mistaken for cancellation. Blocking changes where future messages go; it does not itself unsubscribe you or terminate the merchant relationship.
- The AI requests broad access. Review permissions and processing details before connecting. If the access or retention terms do not fit the task, do not grant it.
- A payment persists after you cancel. Check the cancellation confirmation and effective date, contact the merchant, and speak with your card issuer if you need the recurring card instruction stopped.
Google has stated that Gmail blocks more than 99.9% of spam, phishing and malware, but that general protection figure is not an accuracy measure for subscription discovery or AI classification. It should not be used to estimate how many subscriptions an inbox audit will find.

Can Gmail Manage subscriptions show every service charging my card?
No. It groups email subscriptions based on messages and sender activity, so a service with no relevant mail in that Gmail account may not appear. Check the accounts and payment statements that cover the addresses and cards you use.
Is it safe to let an AI read receipts and invoices?
That depends on the app’s permissions and data handling, not just its ability to classify messages. Check whether message bodies or attachments are processed outside your mailbox, which provider handles them, retention and deletion terms, and whether access can be revoked.
What happens if I revoke an AI app’s mailbox access?
Revoking access prevents future mailbox access through that authorization, but it may not erase information the app already retained. Check the app’s deletion controls and privacy terms if you want previously processed data removed.
Can a subscription audit tell me whether a charge is tax-deductible?
No. Finding a renewal or receipt does not establish how a payment should be treated for tax purposes. Keep the merchant’s transaction records and consult the relevant tax guidance or a qualified adviser for your circumstances.
