An AI agent can reach far more than the folder or app you connected in its setup screen. Its effective access is the combined reach of OAuth grants, API keys, service-account tokens, app installations, webhooks, shared-folder permissions, repository roles, browser sessions, and local extensions. To audit it, identify every identity and credential, map each permission to the actions it allows, preserve logs, revoke access in dependency order, rotate anything the agent could have read, and then test that old credentials fail.
This guide gives a platform-aware procedure for Google Workspace, GitHub, Slack, and OpenAI accounts. It also explains how to distinguish read access from write or administrator access, investigate downloads and changes, and reconnect an agent with a smaller, expiring permission set.

What does an AI agent actually have access to?
Start with the agent’s effective identity, not its chat interface. The practical blast radius is the union of all identities and paths the agent can use, including permissions that were granted months ago or inherited through a shared resource.
| Access path | What to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| User or service account | Account name, owner, tenant, creation date and last use | Determines whose authority the agent is exercising and which logs to inspect |
| OAuth grants | Application, scopes, consent date and account | Scopes may allow reading, editing, sending, sharing or deleting data |
| API keys and service-account tokens | Key ID, issuer, scopes, expiration, storage location and last use | A copied secret can continue working without the original app being open |
| App installations and webhooks | Workspace, repository or channel, installer and callback destinations | Removing a visible app may not remove a webhook or bot token |
| Shared folders and repositories | Inherited role, direct membership and external collaborators | Access can arrive through a parent folder, organization or team |
| Browser sessions and local extensions | Device, browser profile, session age and extension permissions | An active session can bypass a newly removed OAuth grant |
Record the storage location of every credential. A token in a secret vault is easier to contain than one pasted into a prompt, issue, chat transcript, notebook or source file. Also note whether the agent runs on a schedule, in a serverless job, on a developer workstation or through a third-party automation service; each execution location may retain separate credentials and logs.

How do I inventory an agent’s identity and blast radius?
Make an inventory before changing anything. A complete list gives you a baseline for investigation and prevents a forgotten token or webhook from silently restoring access.
- Identify the principal. Write down the human user, bot user, service account or organization identity used for each connection. If the agent can switch identities, record every one.
- Collect grants and credentials. List OAuth applications, personal and organization API keys, service-account tokens, app installations, webhooks, shared drives, repository memberships, browser sessions and local extensions.
- Capture metadata. For each item, record owner, scopes, creation date, last-use time, expiration, device or IP details where available, and exact storage location.
- Trace execution paths. Note schedules, queues, plugins and fallback credentials. An agent that normally uses OAuth may still have an API key configured for error recovery.
- Mark direct and inherited access. Distinguish a permission granted directly to the agent from one inherited through a team, shared folder, repository organization or administrator role.
Google Workspace administrators can review configured applications and applications that have actually been accessed. GitHub exposes authorizations, tokens and credentials. OpenAI provides security-activity and session review. Use those views as authoritative inventories, then compare them with the agent’s configuration and deployment environment.
How should I map permissions to actions and data?
Scopes are only useful when translated into concrete actions. Label every permission as read, write, delete, share, send, execute or administrator, then pair that action with the data it can reach.
Classify the action
- Read: view files, messages, issues, contacts, calendars or configuration.
- Write: create or edit files, commits, tickets, records or settings.
- Delete: remove files, messages, repositories, keys or users.
- Share: change link access, invite collaborators or publish data externally.
- Send: email, post messages, open pull requests or trigger notifications as you.
- Execute: run workflows, deploy code, invoke functions or issue commands.
- Administrator: manage users, billing, security policies, tokens or integrations.
Classify the data
Separate personal, financial, source-code, production, internal and public data. A read-only token for public documentation has a small practical blast radius; a read-and-share permission on customer records does not. Production credentials and private signing keys require the highest priority even if the agent only had read scope, because copied secrets can be reused elsewhere.
Write a short statement for each connection: “This identity may read X, edit Y, and send Z, but must not delete, share or administer.” That statement becomes the target configuration after remediation.
What evidence should I preserve before revoking access?
Preserve evidence first whenever it is safe to do so. Revocation can remove the very metadata needed to determine what happened.

- Export or screenshot consent and authorization lists, including scopes and timestamps.
- Save token metadata, key IDs, creation and last-use information, and expiration settings.
- Export repository security events and audit-log entries.
- Save drive activity, workspace logs and records of downloads, exports, permission changes and sharing.
- Retain the agent’s job history, prompts, tool calls, execution IDs and error logs.
- Record actor, device, IP and time details where the platform provides them.
Store copies in a location the agent cannot modify. Keep the original timestamps and time zone. If an incident may require legal, regulatory or employment review, restrict access to the evidence and maintain a simple chain-of-custody note identifying who exported each record.
In what order should I revoke an AI agent?
Use dependency order so the agent cannot recreate access while you are removing it. Revocation is not complete until old sessions and secrets fail and any copied credentials have been replaced.
- Stop schedules and webhooks. Disable cron jobs, queue consumers, event subscriptions and callback URLs first. Otherwise a running job may immediately request a new token or continue making changes.
- Remove OAuth grants and app installations. Revoke the user or organization authorization, then uninstall the application where the platform separates those actions.
- Revoke or delete API keys and service-account tokens. Treat exposed credentials as compromised. GitHub notes that revoked credentials cannot be restored; new credentials are required.
- Remove resource permissions. Delete direct and inherited access to shared folders, drives, repositories, projects, channels and production systems.
- Invalidate active sessions. Sign out browser sessions and terminate refresh-token sessions on every device or profile used by the agent.
- Rotate every secret the agent could read. Replace passwords, API keys, signing keys, database credentials, webhook secrets and recovery codes, not only the token used for the connection.
Slack documents that revoking an OAuth token removes bot-token access and related webhooks. Removing an app grant, however, does not rotate a secret the agent may already have copied. Perform both actions.
How do I revoke access in Google Workspace?
Workspace administrators should review both configured applications and applications that have been accessed, then block or restrict the offending application and investigate the affected resources.
- Open the administrator controls for application access and review the configured-app and accessed-app views.
- Find the agent’s application and inspect the account, scopes, consent date and recent use.
- Change the application to Blocked or Restricted, according to your organization’s policy.
- Check Drive activity and Workspace logs for reads, downloads, exports, edits, shares and permission changes during the agent’s active period.
- Remove the agent’s direct and inherited access to shared drives, folders, documents and groups.
- Revoke related OAuth grants, invalidate sessions and rotate any keys or passwords visible to the agent.
“Restricted” may be appropriate when only approved users or scopes should continue to work; “Blocked” is the safer containment choice for a suspected compromise. Confirm the actual effect in your edition because administrator controls and audit retention can vary by plan.
How do I revoke access in GitHub?
GitHub remediation combines authorization removal, credential deletion, repository permission review and audit-log analysis.

- Open the account or organization settings for authorized applications, personal access tokens and other credentials.
- Revoke the agent’s application authorization and delete every token it could use. Revoked credentials are irreversible and require newly issued credentials.
- Review repository, organization and team memberships for direct and inherited roles.
- Inspect the audit log and security events for clones, downloads, pushes, workflow runs, secret access, permission changes and failed authentication.
- Rotate repository, cloud and deployment secrets that the agent could read, even if no malicious use appears in the log.
- Issue a replacement credential with only the repository and operations required, and set an expiration or review date.
Check both user-level and organization-level authorizations. An agent connected to one repository may have obtained organization-wide access through a team role, while a token created by a service account may be used by several automations.
How do I revoke access in Slack?
Slack access can persist through a bot token, an app installation or a webhook, so remove and verify each component.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Identify the workspace, installing user, bot user, OAuth scopes and webhook destinations.
- Uninstall the application or revoke its OAuth token in the workspace’s app-management controls.
- Confirm that the bot token no longer authenticates and that related incoming or outgoing webhooks no longer deliver events.
- Review workspace activity for message reads, exports, posts, file downloads, channel invitations and permission changes.
- Remove the bot from private channels and shared channels, then rotate any signing or webhook secrets the agent could have seen.
- Reconnect only the channels and message actions required, under a dedicated identity where possible.
A token revocation that removes bot access but leaves a separately configured webhook is incomplete. Test both the API credential and each callback endpoint after the change.
How do I secure an OpenAI account or API connection?
Use the account’s security-activity and session views to identify unfamiliar access, log out active sessions, and follow the platform’s API-key guidance if compromise is suspected.
- Review security activity for unfamiliar sign-ins, devices, locations and session times.
- Log out sessions that the agent or an unknown device may still control.
- Revoke exposed API keys and create replacements with the smallest practical scope and lifetime.
- Inspect agent prompts, logs and integrations for copied keys, uploaded files or sensitive outputs.
- Require phishing-resistant MFA for administrators and keep a separately stored backup security key.
MFA protects future authentication but does not automatically cancel existing logins. Treat active sessions and API keys as separate revocation tasks.
What should I rotate after an AI agent saw an API key?
Rotate every secret within the key’s possible reach, not just the key displayed in an error message. Assume that a read-capable agent could have copied credentials from files, environment variables, logs, prompts or tool responses.

- Delete the exposed API key and issue a replacement with minimal scopes.
- Change passwords and revoke refresh tokens for connected accounts.
- Replace database, cloud, deployment and package-registry credentials present in reachable files.
- Rotate signing keys, webhook secrets and encryption credentials if the agent could read them.
- Invalidate recovery codes and regenerate them after account takeover is possible.
- Search source code, issue trackers, chat and agent transcripts for the old value, then remove copies and purge caches where supported.
Store replacements in a managed secret vault. Do not put secrets in prompts, chat messages, issue trackers or source code. Give the agent a dedicated identity rather than a personal administrator credential.
How can I tell whether an AI agent downloaded or changed my files?
Correlate agent job history with platform audit records. Look for reads, exports, downloads, edits, deletions, shares, messages, permission changes and failed requests in the same time window.
Build a timeline
- Set the earliest possible start time from the grant or token creation date.
- Align agent job IDs and tool calls with drive, repository, workspace and account logs.
- Group events by actor, device, IP address and credential ID.
- Separate successful actions from failed requests; repeated failures may reveal attempted access to resources outside the intended scope.
- Flag bulk reads, archive creation, unusual exports, new shares, repository clones and permission changes for review.
Interpret missing evidence carefully
No matching event does not prove that no data was accessed. Retention may be plan-dependent, logs may omit a downstream service, and a copied secret may have been used from another device. Preserve what exists, record the retention limits, and investigate the agent host, storage bucket, browser profile and backup systems for downloaded copies.
How do I verify that revocation worked?
Verification requires a negative test with the old identity and a positive test with the replacement identity.
- Make a harmless request using the old token, session or app credential and confirm that authentication or authorization fails.
- Check that the old webhook receives no events and that the old bot or service account cannot access a test resource.
- Use the replacement identity to perform only the intended read or write action.
- Attempt an action that should be prohibited, such as sharing, deleting or accessing a different repository, and confirm denial.
- Review logs for the test events, including failed requests and the identity that generated them.
Document the test result, timestamp, credential ID and resource. A successful replacement test does not excuse a failed old-credential test; both results belong in the incident record.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What is the safest way to reconnect an AI agent?
Reissue access narrowly under a dedicated identity, with practical expiration and a scheduled review date. The agent should receive only the folder, repository, channel or API operation it needs.

Which controls should I compare when choosing an access-governance approach?
Platforms differ less in whether they offer revocation than in how precisely they scope it and how much evidence they retain afterward.

| Control | Questions to ask | Operational trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Scope granularity | Can access be limited to one folder, repository, channel or operation? | Fine scopes reduce blast radius but take more setup and maintenance |
| Read/write separation | Can read, edit, delete, share and send be granted independently? | Separate roles improve safety but may require multiple identities |
| Token and session revocation | Can administrators invalidate refresh tokens, browser sessions, app grants and webhooks separately? | More independent controls make containment reliable |
| Audit depth and retention | Are reads, exports, downloads, changes, failures, devices and actors logged, and for how long? | Deeper logs improve investigation; retention can depend on the plan |
| Credential expiration | Can keys and grants expire automatically or require periodic review? | Short lifetimes limit exposure but increase reconnect work |
| Review automation | Can owners receive reminders and approve continued access? | Automation reduces forgotten grants but needs accurate ownership |
| Deployment effort | Can the controls be applied consistently across personal accounts and enterprise tenants? | Central administration is stronger; personal accounts may require manual reviews |
| Recovery path | Can a revoked credential be restored, or must a new one be issued? | Irreversible revocation is safer but requires a documented reissue process |
How should I harden administrator access for future reviews?
Require phishing-resistant MFA for administrators and register a backup key before an incident occurs. FIDO2/WebAuthn uses scoped public-key credentials designed to resist phishing, replay and server-breach attacks. A hardware key such as a USB-C/NFC security key can provide that protection when supported by the account.
Keep the backup key in a separate, controlled location and test account recovery. Deleting a local FIDO2 private key does not necessarily invalidate the provider-side public key; remove the credential at the relying party as well. Treat hardware-key enrollment, session invalidation and provider-side credential deletion as separate controls.
What are the most common audit failures?
- Revoking only the visible app: A copied API key, refresh token or webhook can remain active.
- Skipping evidence capture: You lose timestamps and actor details needed to distinguish normal automation from misuse.
- Ignoring inherited permissions: Removing a direct folder or repository role may leave access through a team or parent resource.
- Rotating only one secret: The agent may have read database, cloud or signing credentials from reachable files.
- Assuming MFA ends sessions: Existing logins and API keys require separate invalidation.
- Testing only the replacement: A new credential can work while the old one remains valid.
- Reconnecting with an administrator token: Convenience recreates the original blast radius.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does revoking an AI agent delete files it already copied?
No. Revocation stops future use of the credential; it does not erase downloads, exports, generated archives, logs or backups already created. Identify every execution host and storage location, preserve evidence, and apply your organization’s data-removal and incident-response process.
Can audit logs prove that an agent did not read a particular file?
Only when the relevant service records that read and retains the event for the period under review. If the platform logs exports or bulk operations but not every file view, state that limitation and correlate agent history, host telemetry and downstream storage records.
Recommended Free Tools
What if the same service account is used by several automations?
Do not rotate it blindly without mapping the other workloads. Quarantine the agent, identify every consumer, issue separate replacement identities, migrate approved workloads, and then revoke the shared credential so one automation cannot impersonate another.
Is deleting a security key from my laptop enough to disable it?
No. A local private-key deletion may leave the provider’s registered public key active. Remove the credential from the account or relying party, invalidate active sessions, and confirm that authentication with the old key fails.
