To audit and restrict an AI agent, treat it as a delegated identity—not as a harmless chat window. First inventory every connected agent and app, its human owner, data sources, tools, permissions, tokens, and last-use evidence. Then remove unnecessary access, separate read from write capabilities, require fresh approval for irreversible actions, monitor activity, and test that revocation actually works.
Disconnecting an integration usually stops future calls; it does not automatically erase data the agent already copied, nor does changing an app’s settings necessarily revoke the provider’s OAuth grant. The practical goal is a documented lifecycle: an approved purpose, least-privilege access, an auditable owner, an expiry or review date, and a tested shutdown path.

An AI agent is connected when software can use your identity or an authorized application identity to read data, call tools, or change records in a service such as mail, cloud storage, calendars, repositories, ticket systems, databases, or workplace platforms. The connection may use OAuth, an API token, a managed identity, a federated identity, or another credential. The important distinction is authority: the agent can act under a principal that your provider recognizes.
A consent screen can cover more than reading. Depending on the grant, an agent may create or edit files, send messages, delete records, export data, make purchases, deploy changes, or alter permissions. Plugins and downstream APIs can expand the effective authority beyond what the first connection appears to show.

Why the delegated-identity model matters
Use the same controls you would apply to a human or service account. Every agent needs a named owner or sponsor, an approver, a defined business purpose, a known environment, and an end date or review trigger. Microsoft guidance calls for a unique, dedicated agent identity with a named owner and approver, documented purpose and access, aggregate-permission review, default denial of unreviewed tools, detailed logging, and tested revocation.
OWASP states the governing principle plainly: “The guiding principle is least agency: give an agent only the autonomy, tools, and access its task requires, for only as long as it needs them.” That principle applies simultaneously to identity, data, tools, operations, tenant boundaries, and token lifetime.

Start with an access register before changing anything. Search provider security pages, connected-app pages, workspace administration consoles, API-token lists, integration settings, and the agent’s own tool configuration. Include abandoned experiments and personal accounts; an unknown connection is an ownership and revocation problem.
Record ownership and purpose
- Agent and application name.
- Provider account, workspace, organization, or tenant.
- Human owner, business sponsor, and approving person.
- Business purpose and the workflow in which the agent operates.
- Deployment environment, such as development, test, or production.
- Consent or enablement date, planned expiry, and next review date.
Record authentication and use
- Authentication method and token type.
- Whether authority is delegated from a user or granted to an application identity.
- Token lifetime, refresh behavior, and credential-rotation procedure.
- Evidence of last use, including the provider event or audit-log timestamp.
- Where credentials are stored and who can retrieve or rotate them.
Record data boundaries
List each mailbox, file repository, calendar, contact set, code repository, ticket queue, database, or sensitive label the agent can reach. State the tenant, site, project, mailbox, repository, or other resource boundary rather than writing “all company data.” Classify sensitive sources explicitly so a later scope change can be detected.
Record tools and operations
Write down every tool exposed to the model and classify what it can do: read, create, edit, send, delete, export, purchase, deploy, or change permissions. Include plugins, connectors, downstream APIs, and linked identities. Calculate the effective aggregate permission; a read-only-looking front end can still reach a write-capable API through a plugin.
Record controls and recovery
- Identity, scope, target resource, action, timestamp, and result fields in logs.
- Alerts for unusual reads, exports, sends, deletions, purchases, deployments, or permission changes.
- Disablement path, OAuth-revocation path, token-invalidation method, and credential-rotation owner.
- Rollback, restore, or compensating action for each write-capable workflow.
- Evidence that revocation has been tested, not merely documented.
How should I calculate an agent’s effective permissions?
Do not rely on the first consent dialog. Trace the complete chain from initiating principal to agent, plugins, downstream APIs, linked identities, and target resources. The effective permission is the union of what each layer can reach and do.
- Identify the principal that starts the run: a named user, service identity, managed identity, or federated identity.
- List OAuth scopes, application roles, group memberships, delegated roles, and any administrator grants.
- Inspect every plugin and connector for its own credentials and resource scopes.
- Map each tool to operations and targets. A “mail” tool may include read, send, delete, and export operations.
- Check tenant, site, repository, mailbox, project, and data-classification boundaries.
- Compare the resulting map with the documented business purpose. Remove any capability that is not necessary for the task.
Re-check authorization in the downstream system on every invocation. A user’s earlier consent or an agent’s internal plan must not substitute for a current authorization decision.

How do I restrict an agent to least privilege?
Begin with deny-by-default and allow only the tools and resources required for one workflow. Least privilege is not just a smaller list of OAuth scopes; it also means fewer resources, fewer operations, shorter token lifetimes, and fewer identities in the execution chain.
Separate read and write identities
Create a read-only identity for discovery, search, summarization, or monitoring. Use a separate write-capable identity for actions that must change data. This makes a prompt-injection mistake or a compromised token less destructive and lets you revoke writing without interrupting read access.
Scope resources and operations
- Limit access to named mailboxes, sites, repositories, projects, queues, or database objects.
- Use task-based roles instead of administrator or owner roles.
- Separate create, edit, send, delete, export, purchase, deploy, and permission-change rights.
- Restrict access by tenant, environment, data classification, and operation.
- Deny tools that have not completed review; do not expose a broad tool and depend on the model to avoid using it.
Use managed identities and short-lived credentials
Prefer managed or federated identities where the provider supports them. Use short-lived tokens and rotate credentials on a defined schedule or after an incident. Do not place long-lived secrets in prompts, environment files, shell history, logs, or agent configuration. Keep retrieval and rotation under an identified owner.
Bind every call to a principal and target
Each invocation should carry the initiating principal, exact operation, and target resource. Downstream authorization should independently verify that combination. This prevents an agent from reusing a valid credential against a different mailbox, repository, tenant, or operation.
Which actions require a human approval gate?
Require fresh approval immediately before an action that is irreversible, externally visible, financially consequential, or capable of broad permission changes. Approval should cover the exact action and target, not merely the fact that the agent is generally trusted.
- Sending messages or publishing content outside the organization.
- Deleting records, files, mail, or tickets.
- Exporting data or moving it to a new system.
- Purchasing goods, services, credits, or subscriptions.
- Deploying code, infrastructure, or configuration.
- Changing roles, permissions, sharing links, or group membership.
Show the reviewer what will happen, which identity will act, the target resource, and the proposed changes. Keep read and draft stages autonomous where appropriate, then pause for approval before the final write or send. An approval control is strongest when the approving principal is independent from the agent’s execution identity.
How do I review and revoke Google Account connections?
Open the Google Account linked-apps page and inspect each listed entry’s data and services. Remove an app’s access when its purpose, owner, or scope is no longer justified. Google also provides an Agent access filter that can stop a Google AI agent from interacting with a linked app.

Understand the two separate controls
Stopping agent access does not necessarily remove the underlying app link. Conversely, deleting a link does not delete data the app already holds. Record both decisions in the access register: whether the agent may interact now and whether the application remains authorized for other uses.
After revocation
- Pause or disable the agent so it cannot immediately request another call.
- Use the linked-apps page to remove the app’s access or apply the Agent access filter as appropriate.
- Invalidate active tokens and rotate any separate API credentials.
- Inspect logs for activity before and after the revocation time.
- Ask the app or provider to delete copied data and verify the request through its available controls.
How do I revoke Apple Account app access?
At account.apple.com, choose Sign-In and Security → Account Data Sharing, select the app, and choose Remove access. Apple says the app cannot access the data again until it is authorized.
That provider-level action should still be paired with an agent shutdown: disable the workflow, remove local credentials, review logs, and request deletion of any data the app retained. If the same agent uses another identity or connector, revoke those separately; removing one Apple authorization does not prove that every downstream path is closed.
How do I disconnect connected apps in ChatGPT?
In ChatGPT, use Settings → Apps or Plugins, select the app and connected account, and choose Disconnect. Disconnection stops future access through that account. Permission settings are a separate control and do not, by themselves, revoke the provider authorization.

Review retained content separately
Disconnecting an app does not automatically remove existing conversations, uploaded files, memories, or data held by the provider. Review and delete each category through the applicable account or provider controls, and make a separate deletion request to the connected service when it may have copied data.
What should I do when an agent must be shut down?
Use a sequence that closes execution, authorization, credentials, data retention, and recovery—not just one “disconnect” button.
- Pause or disable the agent. Stop scheduled runs, webhooks, queues, and tool execution.
- Remove tool access. Deny connectors and write-capable tools first, especially those that can send, delete, export, purchase, deploy, or change permissions.
- Revoke OAuth grants. Disconnect provider accounts and remove linked-app authorizations.
- Invalidate tokens and rotate credentials. Remove secrets from logs, prompts, configuration, shell history, and environment files.
- Inspect audit logs. Search for reads, writes, sends, exports, purchases, deletions, and permission changes, including activity immediately before shutdown.
- Request deletion of copied data. Revocation prevents future calls but does not itself erase retained copies.
- Restore or compensate. Use backups, version history, message recall, refund procedures, or manual corrections where unintended changes occurred.
- Document the decision. Record the owner, reason, timestamps, affected resources, evidence reviewed, and any residual risk.
- Re-run the inventory. Confirm that no plugin, downstream API, alternate identity, or scheduled process can still act.
How can I verify that revocation really worked?
Revocation is a testable control, not a status label. After disabling the agent and removing authorization, attempt a controlled call in a non-production or low-risk resource. The expected result is an authorization failure, no new token issuance, and no downstream write.

- Check scheduled jobs, webhooks, queues, and retries; a previously authorized run may otherwise continue.
- Check downstream systems for cached credentials or service identities.
- Verify that alerts fire for attempted use after shutdown.
Record the test evidence and date. Re-test after changing the model, workflow, tenant, tool manifest, identity, or data scope.

What should monitoring and audit logs contain?
Logs should let an investigator answer who acted, what happened, where it happened, and under which authority. At minimum, capture the initiating principal, agent identity, token or grant scope, tool and operation, target resource, tenant or environment, timestamp, result, approval decision, and downstream identity.
Alert on unusual volume or destinations, first-time tools, exports, mass reads, sends outside expected recipients, deletions, purchases, deployments, and permission changes. Keep enough context to connect an approval to the exact action that followed. Protect logs from modification and avoid placing raw secrets or unnecessary sensitive content in them.
When should an agent’s access be reviewed again?
Set a recurring review date and trigger an immediate review whenever the workflow, model, tool manifest, tenant, identity, or data scope changes. A model upgrade or newly installed plugin can alter effective agency even if the original OAuth grant remains unchanged.
Review questions
- Does the named owner still exist and approve the purpose?
- Is every resource and operation still required?
- Can a read-only identity replace a write-capable one?
- Are tokens short-lived and credentials rotated?
- Did any plugin or downstream API add access?
- Are approval gates still present for irreversible actions?
- Can the team show recent log, alert, revocation, and recovery tests?
Remove unused access rather than allowing it to accumulate. If no owner can explain a connection’s purpose, disable it, investigate its history, and preserve the decision record.
How should I compare agent platforms or governance tools?
Use a consistent scorecard instead of judging a platform by its conversational quality. Compare the controls that determine blast radius and recoverability.
| Control area | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Permission granularity | Can access be limited to specific resources, data classes, tenants, operations, and environments? |
| Read/write separation | Can discovery and drafting use a different identity from sending, editing, deleting, or deploying? |
| Approval controls | Can irreversible or externally visible actions require fresh, attributable approval? |
| Token lifetime | Does the system support short-lived tokens, rotation, and rapid invalidation? |
| Resource and tenant scoping | Can a connector be confined to named mailboxes, sites, repositories, projects, or tenants? |
| Audit-log completeness | Are principal, scope, tool, operation, target, timestamp, approval, and result recorded? |
| Revocation speed | Can administrators disable the agent, revoke grants, and invalidate tokens through a documented path? |
| Recovery support | Are rollback, restore, compensating actions, and incident records practical? |
| Provider coverage | Does the control plane cover every account, plugin, downstream API, and linked identity in the workflow? |
What are the common audit failures and their fixes?
“The agent only summarizes, so it is safe.”
Summarization still exposes every source the connector can read, and a plugin may add write operations. Fix the assumption by documenting exact data boundaries and reviewing the aggregate permission chain.
Best Value
“Removing the app deleted the copied data.”
Revocation and deletion are different actions. Inspect the app’s retention and deletion controls, submit a deletion request, and verify what remains in conversations, files, memories, caches, exports, or provider storage.
“A broad administrator role is easier.”
Convenience creates a larger blast radius and makes investigation harder. Replace it with task-based roles, resource limits, separate write identities, and approval gates.
“The access list is enough.”
A provider page may omit downstream credentials, scheduled jobs, plugins, or service identities. Trace the full execution path and test a controlled call after revocation.
“Approval was granted once.”
Standing consent is not fresh approval for a high-impact action. Require approval at the point of send, delete, export, purchase, deploy, or permission change, showing the exact target and proposed change.
What does a good agent record look like?
A useful record lets a new administrator understand and control the workflow without asking the original builder. Include the agent and app names, owner and approver, purpose, environment, authentication method, token lifetime, consent date, last-use evidence, data sources, sensitive labels, tools and operations, downstream identities, logs and alerts, expiry date, disablement and rotation paths, deletion procedure, rollback plan, and the date of the last revocation test.
Keep the record synchronized with configuration. A change to a model, connector, plugin, tenant, resource, or operation should create a review event before the modified workflow is allowed to run in production.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does revoking OAuth access invalidate tokens that are already in use?
Treat revocation as requiring verification rather than assuming every active session ends immediately. Disable the agent, invalidate tokens where the provider allows it, rotate separate credentials, and inspect logs for successful calls after the revocation timestamp.
Can I allow an agent to draft messages without letting it send them?
Yes, expose read and draft operations through a non-sending identity, then place sending behind a separate permission and a fresh approval gate. Test that the draft workflow cannot invoke a send-capable downstream API through a plugin.
How do I handle an agent whose owner has left the organization?
Suspend the agent and its write-capable tools, preserve relevant logs, and assign a new owner and approver only after the purpose and scope are revalidated. If no legitimate purpose remains, revoke access and request deletion of retained copies.
What evidence should I keep after deleting an agent?
Keep the shutdown time, provider revocation confirmation, token-rotation record, log review, copied-data deletion request, recovery actions, and a controlled failed-call test. This proves that the identity was disabled and that residual access was checked.
