To assess an AI-focused ETF, look past its label and recent performance. Check what the fund counts as AI exposure, how dependent its holdings are on AI-related business, how concentrated the portfolio is, and what its costs, tracking, trading liquidity and fund disclosures show. These checks matter because an “AI” label does not establish that AI generates a significant share of every holding’s revenue or profit.
What makes an AI-focused ETF risky?
An AI-focused ETF carries the risks of the securities it owns, the rules that determine what it can own, and the mechanics of running and trading the fund. A narrow theme can create substantial exposure to a few issuers, industries or countries; the word “AI” alone does not tell you how much of the portfolio depends on AI-related revenue.

The TrueShares Technology, AI & Deep Learning ETF prospectus cautions that few publicly traded companies have AI, machine-learning or deep-learning activities that are an attributable and significant revenue or profit stream. As a result, an ETF may hold companies whose businesses depend substantially on other products and services. That can make the fund’s exposure to the theme less direct than its name suggests, while leaving it exposed to risks from those other businesses.
Risk is not captured by a single figure. Expense ratio, concentration, tracking difference, bid-ask spread, and premium or discount to net asset value (NAV) describe different things. Review them together, using the latest fund documents and a consistent holdings snapshot date.

How do I find out what an AI ETF actually invests in?
Start with the fund’s investment objective and, if it tracks an index, the index methodology. Those documents define which businesses qualify, how holdings are selected and weighted, and how the portfolio can change. A category label is not a substitute for those rules.
Read the objective and index rules
Look for the stated definition of AI exposure and the activities the fund considers relevant. For example, AIQ tracks the Indxx Artificial Intelligence & Big Data Index. ARTY describes a universe that includes generative AI, AI data and infrastructure, AI software, and AI services. These descriptions show why two funds with AI in their names need not have the same investable universe or portfolio.

Then check the selection and weighting rules. Find out whether an issuer must meet particular business criteria, whether the index caps individual holdings or sectors, and how often it is reconstituted or rebalanced. The methodology—not the label—sets the fund’s permitted exposure and the process by which it can change.
Compare the stated exposure with current holdings
Use the fund’s latest holdings file to see what it owns now. Compare the largest positions with the objective and index rules, and note each holding’s weight and business. A company can qualify under a broad AI-related definition while deriving much of its business from activities outside AI; that is different from a holding whose results depend more directly on AI-related activity.
Holdings are a dated snapshot, not a promise about what the fund will own later. Pair them with the methodology and rebalance schedule to understand how quickly the portfolio may change. For comparisons between funds, use holdings from the same date; otherwise, apparent differences may reflect different reporting dates rather than different strategies.

How can I measure concentration in an AI ETF?
Check issuer, sector and country weights, rather than relying on the number of holdings. A fund can own many securities yet still have substantial exposure to a small group of companies, one sector or one region. Concentration can amplify losses if a heavily weighted issuer, region or part of the theme weakens.
Record the main concentration measures
- Top 10 issuer weight: Add the weights of the ten largest issuers. This indicates how much of the portfolio is in its largest positions.
- Largest single-issuer weight: Note the biggest position and check whether the index or fund rules impose a limit.
- Sector weights: Record the largest sectors and whether the portfolio is dominated by one or a few.
- Country weights: Identify major country exposures. A fund’s listing market does not by itself tell you where its holdings are based or do business.
Use the fund’s current holdings and stated limits together. A current weight describes the portfolio on the snapshot date; a limit describes what the strategy allows. Neither alone shows how concentrated the fund might become after a future rebalance.
Ask what drives each large position
For the largest holdings, distinguish between a company’s AI-related activities and its broader business. Consider whether the fund’s eligibility criteria make AI a material source of revenue or profit, or whether they also admit companies with relevant products, infrastructure or services alongside substantial non-AI operations. The prospectus warning about attributable and significant AI revenue or profit makes this a central question, not a technicality.
A concentrated fund is not automatically unsuitable, and a larger number of holdings does not automatically make a fund diversified. The useful question is whether the exposure and potential losses are consistent with the investor’s own risk tolerance and the role the fund is meant to play.
How do fees and tracking affect returns?
The expense ratio is an important recurring fund cost, but it does not explain the full difference between an index’s return and the fund’s return. Tracking can also be affected by portfolio differences, valuation timing, transaction costs, cash, dividends, taxes, rebalancing and regulatory requirements.

Separate stated fees from realized tracking
Record the stated expense ratio, then compare the fund’s return with its benchmark over matching periods. The gap between the two is a realized tracking difference; it should not be assumed to equal the expense ratio. Make sure the periods, return conventions and benchmark correspond before interpreting the comparison.
Tracking error describes variation in the fund’s return difference from its benchmark over time, rather than just the size of the gap in one period. A single period can show a difference but cannot establish how consistent that difference is. Review the fund’s own reporting and compare periods on the same basis.
Check turnover and implementation
Turnover helps show how much buying and selling the portfolio undergoes. Rebalancing and index changes can generate transaction costs and affect realized tracking. The methodology and fund reporting can help explain why a fund’s holdings or returns depart from the benchmark, but an expense ratio alone will not capture those effects.
When comparing options, treat fees, turnover and tracking as related but separate measures. A low stated expense ratio does not establish that a fund tracks its index closely, while a tracking difference over one selected period does not by itself explain the cause or predict future results.

Review both the ETF’s own trading data and the liquidity of its underlying securities. ETF trading depends partly on market makers and authorized participants; if those participants are lost or fail, spreads can widen and the fund can trade at a premium or discount to NAV. Under stressed conditions, prospectuses also warn of possible trading halts or delisting risk.

Assess trading conditions
- Median bid-ask spread: Compare the typical difference between the price buyers bid and sellers ask. A wider spread can increase the cost of trading.
- Trading volume and fund assets: Record both as context, not as guarantees of liquidity. Neither measure alone establishes how easily the fund or its underlying holdings can be traded in a stressed market.
- Underlying holdings: Consider whether those securities are themselves liquid. ETF share trading cannot be assessed independently of the assets the fund holds.
- Premium/discount history: Compare the market price with NAV over time and look for how it has behaved in difficult conditions, where the fund discloses that history.
An ETF’s market price can be above or below the value of its underlying assets per share. Stress and closed foreign markets can increase that difference. A current quote is only a moment in time; it does not show how large deviations might become when trading conditions deteriorate.
Understand the role of market participants
Authorized participants and market makers help support ETF trading and the process that keeps market prices aligned with NAV. The prospectuses cited for AI-focused funds warn that losing these participants or their failure can widen spreads, increase premiums or discounts, prompt trading halts, or threaten delisting. These are fund-structure risks, distinct from whether the ETF’s AI thesis performs well.
Which prospectus risks should I look for beyond the portfolio?
Read the fund’s current prospectus for risks that may not be visible in a holdings list. In addition to market and concentration risks, the disclosures identify operational and intermediary risks that can affect the fund’s ability to operate or trade normally.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Cybersecurity and service providers: Consider disclosed risks involving cyber incidents or failures by firms that provide services to the fund.
- Issuer financial condition: Holdings remain exposed to the financial condition and business prospects of the companies that issue them.
- Large-shareholder redemptions: Review whether the prospectus discusses the effects of redemptions by large shareholders.
- Fund closure: Check whether closure risk is described and understand what the fund’s documents say would happen if it were liquidated.
- Authorized participants and market makers: Look for disclosures about the consequences if these intermediaries become unavailable or fail.
Use the current prospectus rather than assuming that risk language or portfolio details from an older document still apply. If a risk is disclosed, consider how it could affect the investment you are evaluating; a list of risks does not quantify the likelihood or severity of each one.

Compare funds on the same date and across the same dimensions. A side-by-side review makes it easier to see whether the funds differ in what they define as AI, the portfolio they build, how they implement it, and the costs and trading risks attached to it.
Best Value
| What to compare | What to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| AI definition and index construction | Objective, eligible activities, selection rules, weighting rules and rebalance schedule | These rules determine what counts as exposure and how it can change. |
| Portfolio concentration | Top 10 issuer weights, largest holding, sector and country weights, and any stated limits | Concentration can make a thematic fund behave differently from a broad-market fund. |
| Implementation and transparency | Active or passive approach and the holdings information the fund provides | Funds can pursue a theme through different portfolio processes and may offer different visibility into holdings. |
| Costs and portfolio changes | Expense ratio, turnover and realized tracking difference over matching periods | The expense ratio is only one part of implementation cost and tracking. |
| Trading and underlying liquidity | Median bid-ask spread, trading volume, assets and liquidity of underlying securities | ETF liquidity depends partly on the market for the shares and the securities the fund owns. |
| Price relative to NAV | Premium/discount behavior and the disclosed history | Market price can differ from NAV, with deviations potentially increasing in stressed or disrupted markets. |
| Operational and intermediary disclosures | Relevant prospectus risks, including closure and intermediary concentration | These risks concern the fund’s operation and trading, not just its investment theme. |
Use the same holdings snapshot date and comparable return periods. If a comparison uses a screening threshold, treat it as that publisher’s selection rule rather than a universal safety test. For example, a 2026 Kiplinger comparison used a 0.75% expense-ratio cap and a $50 million assets-under-management screen for its own selection process; those figures are not established safety standards for AI ETFs.
What is a practical pre-investment checklist?
Before deciding whether an AI-focused ETF fits your portfolio, work through the fund’s actual documents and current data in a consistent order.

- Compare like with like. Use the same date and comparable measures for every fund under consideration; do not let a category label or one historical return stand in for the analysis.
The result is not a prediction of performance. It is a clearer account of what risks the fund actually takes, how those risks are implemented, and which uncertainties remain visible in its disclosures and trading data.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can an AI ETF lose money even if AI adoption keeps growing?
Yes. Growth in a broad technology theme does not ensure that the fund’s particular holdings will benefit, or that their share prices will rise. The fund’s results depend on its securities, weights and trading conditions, not on a theme’s popularity alone.
Does a larger AI ETF automatically have lower risk?
No. Assets under management are one useful comparison point, but they do not establish diversification, underlying liquidity, tracking quality or the strength of market-making support. Evaluate those factors separately.
Why might an AI ETF’s holdings change after I buy it?
A passive fund can change its portfolio when its tracked index rebalances or changes constituents; an active fund may change holdings through its own management process. Check the fund’s stated process and schedule to understand what can prompt changes.
Is a low expense ratio enough to choose an AI ETF?
No. It tells you about one stated fund cost, not the portfolio’s concentration, realized tracking, trading spread, premium/discount behavior or disclosed operational risks. Compare those measures on consistent dates and periods.
