Ask the chatbot for a memory-only inventory, not a general description of your current conversation. Use a prompt that forces it to label each item as saved memory, retrieved past-chat context, custom instruction, file or connected-app source, or inference, and to name the supporting source and uncertainty. Then verify the answer in the service’s Memory, Personalization, or Activity controls. The chat response is an inspection aid, not a complete export: a chatbot can omit details, confuse a current-chat fact with a saved item, or infer something that was never stored. For sensitive questions, start in a temporary or unpersonalized chat, and delete both the stored item and its originating chat, file, or connected source when you need full removal.
What does an AI chatbot “remember” about you?
“Remember” can describe several different mechanisms. A service may save a short personal preference, retrieve relevant passages from earlier chats, apply custom instructions, read an uploaded file or connected app, or make a fresh inference from what you just wrote. Those mechanisms have different controls and deletion rules, so asking one broad question without labels produces an ambiguous answer.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteUse these categories when auditing any chatbot:
- Saved memory: a durable profile item the service may use in future conversations.
- Retrieved past-chat context: information fetched from earlier conversation history when it appears relevant.
- Custom instruction: directions you entered that shape responses, such as preferred tone or formatting.
- File or connected-app source: information available through an uploaded document, library, integration, or account connection.
- Inference: a conclusion the model is drawing rather than a fact explicitly stored anywhere.
The current chat is another important distinction. A detail can be visible in the open conversation without being carried into a future chat. Ask the chatbot to separate current-chat context from information it may carry forward.
What prompt should I use to audit a chatbot’s memory?
Paste this prompt into a new conversation. It requests a useful inventory while preventing the model from presenting guesses as stored facts.
#1 Best Overall
What do you remember about me? List only information you may carry into future chats. For every item, label it as (1) saved memory, (2) retrieved past-chat context, (3) custom instruction, (4) file or connected-app source, or (5) inference. State what source supports it, identify uncertainty, and tell me how to correct or delete it. Also identify anything that comes only from this current conversation and is not persistent.
Ask for one item per line or a table with columns for item, category, source, confidence or uncertainty, and correction or deletion path. If the answer contains a broad statement such as “you like concise answers,” ask which exact setting, memory entry, or past message supports it.
How do I test whether an item is really stored?
- Ask the inventory question in a fresh chat, not in the conversation where you originally supplied the fact.
- Ask the chatbot to quote or identify the supporting source without repeating sensitive content unnecessarily.
- Open the product’s memory, personalization, or activity manager and look for the same item.
- Temporarily remove or correct the item, start another new chat, and ask whether the old value is still being used.
A confident answer is not proof of persistence. Treat the product’s management screen as the authoritative check for what the interface exposes, while recognizing that a summary may not list every detail or source available to the system.

Why can’t a chatbot’s answer be treated as a complete data export?
Chatbot memory summaries are usually high-level views. OpenAI describes its summary as information the system may use to personalize responses and notes that it does not necessarily include every detail or source that Memory can reference. The same practical limitation applies to any model-generated inventory: it can omit an entry, merge two sources, or infer a preference from wording.
Require explicit labels and uncertainty in every audit. If the chatbot says, “You live in Boston,” that sentence could be a saved memory, a line retrieved from an old chat, a connected profile, or a guess based on a travel question. The source label determines which control you must use next.
How do I check memory in ChatGPT?
ChatGPT lets you ask directly what it remembers and provides account controls for reviewing personalization data. The exact labels vary by account, plan, region, and rollout, but the usual path is Settings → Personalization → Memory.

Run the conversational audit
- Open a new chat and send the memory-only prompt above.
- Ask ChatGPT to separate saved memories from relevant chat-history retrieval, custom instructions, files, connected apps, and inferences.
- Compare its list with the entries and sources shown in the Memory area, including any available Manage, Saved memories, or memory-summary controls.
ChatGPT may expose separate controls for Memory, Reference saved memories, Reference chat history, a memory summary, and source details. Not every account has every control, so record which switches and entries your account actually shows.

Saved memories and chat history are separate. Deleting the conversation where you first mentioned a fact does not automatically remove a separately saved memory. For full removal, delete the saved memory and the originating chat or other source; remove relevant files from the library and disconnect a connected app if either supplied the information.
OpenAI says deletion updates can take time and that logs of deleted saved memories may be retained for up to 30 days for safety and debugging. That retention statement concerns backend logs, not an invitation to keep using the deleted item in normal personalization.
When should I use Temporary Chat?
Choose Temporary Chat, or the available unpersonalized option, before discussing information that should not create or update personalization memory. OpenAI says Temporary Chats do not appear in history, create memories, or help improve models. Availability and exact behavior can vary with account settings, so confirm the notice shown in your interface.
How do I inspect memory in Claude?
Claude supports a direct search of previous conversations and can show citations to retrieved chats when those are available. Ask it to identify personal facts or preferences used for the answer and to separate quoted or cited material from inference.

Search my previous conversations and list the personal facts or preferences you are using for this answer. Separate quoted or cited information from your inference, and tell me which entries are saved in memory versus merely retrieved from a prior chat.
Where are Claude’s memory topics managed?
Open Settings → Your Claude → Manage; some accounts may show an older Memory location. Claude organizes memory into topics such as role, projects, people and places, communication preferences, technical preferences, and ongoing work. Inspect a topic, edit its wording, or delete it, then ask Claude in chat to make the same change and verify the result in the manager.
Memory availability depends on plan and workspace. Anthropic says sensitive topics are not stored by default, with an optional setting for users who choose to include them. A work or school administrator may also control which memory features are available.
How do I review personalization in Gemini?
Gemini’s documented personalization uses memory of past Gemini chats. Eligibility currently requires a personal Google Account, age 18 or older, and Keep Activity turned on. It is unavailable for work, school, and supervised accounts and does not apply to some features.
Which Gemini settings should I open?
- On the web, open Settings & help → Personal Intelligence.
- Turn memory-based personalization on or off as needed.
- Open Gemini Apps Activity to find and delete past chats that may supply personalization.
- Ask Gemini which information from past chats it used, separating remembered details from assumptions.
Google notes that deleting activity may involve a short delay before chats stop being used for personalization. The setting and delay can differ by account, region, and feature, so read the confirmation message shown when you change it.
What is the difference between correcting a memory and deleting it?
Correction changes the value the service should use; deletion removes the item or source. If a location, job title, health detail, or preference is wrong, do both the semantic correction and the source cleanup when necessary.
Use an explicit replacement
Write the old and new values in one instruction: Replace “I live in Boston” with “I live in Chicago; treat the old location as deleted.” Then ask the chatbot to identify where the old value existed and whether it has removed or merely superseded it.
Follow the source trail
- For a saved-memory entry, edit or delete it in the memory manager.
- For retrieved chat context, delete the originating conversation if you no longer want it available.
- For a custom instruction, remove or rewrite the instruction in account settings.
- For a file, delete the file from the library and remove copies from relevant chats.
- For a connected app, disconnect the integration and remove the underlying record where appropriate.
- For an inference, correct the assumption and ask the model not to rely on it; there may be no stored record to delete.
What is the safest way to ask about sensitive information?
Do not paste a password, government identifier, financial account number, medical record, or another secret merely to see whether the chatbot remembers it. Start with a temporary or unpersonalized chat, disable the relevant memory or personalization control, and use a redacted example.
After the audit, inspect account activity and source controls rather than relying only on the model’s response. Claude and Gemini expose their own eligibility and management rules, while ChatGPT separates saved memories from chat history. A setting that prevents future personalization does not necessarily erase older chats or files.

If it lists too much
Reply: Remove anything that is only a guess or comes solely from this open chat. Return only items that a product control identifies as saved, retrieved, instructed, or connected, with the source for each. Then check the manager instead of accepting the shortened list as proof.
If it lists too little
Ask it to inspect each enabled source separately: saved memory, chat-history retrieval, custom instructions, files, and connected apps. Some products expose only a high-level summary, so an incomplete conversational answer is possible even when the service can use additional context.
Best Value
If it claims an item was deleted but still uses it
Check whether the old value remains in the current conversation, another chat, an uploaded file, or a connected service. Delete or disconnect that source, wait for the product’s stated processing delay, and repeat the test in a new chat.
How do the major services compare?
The important differences are not just whether a bot can answer an audit prompt, but whether you can see the source and remove it at the right layer.

What is the complete memory-audit checklist?
- Open a fresh chat, preferably temporary or unpersonalized for sensitive material.
- Send the memory-only audit prompt and require the five source labels plus uncertainty.
- Mark every item correct, outdated, wrong, or do not use.
- Give an exact replacement for each outdated or wrong value.
- Confirm the change in the service’s memory, personalization, or activity manager.
- Delete the originating chat, file, or connected-app record when full removal matters.
- Start another new chat and test whether the old value is still being used.
Keep a private record of the date, account, and controls you checked if the information is important. Product labels, eligibility, and retention behavior can change, so a later audit may show a different interface or scope.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can an AI chatbot remember my passwords or private keys?
Never assume a chatbot will protect credentials simply because it says it does not remember them. Do not enter passwords, recovery codes, private keys, or full payment details for testing; rotate a credential immediately if you have exposed it.
Does turning off memory erase my previous conversations?
Usually not. A memory or personalization switch controls future use, while chat history, uploaded files, and connected-account records generally require separate deletion actions.
Why does a chatbot mention a fact after I deleted its memory?
The fact may still be present in the open conversation, another chat, an uploaded file, or a connected service. It can also be a new inference from your wording, so test in a fresh chat after checking every source.
Can I audit a chatbot used through a company workspace?
Workspace administrators may control memory, history, retention, and connected apps, and some consumer features may be unavailable. Check the workspace policy and the controls shown by your administrator before assuming that personal-account instructions apply.
