To secure a TV stand, attach a furniture anti-tip restraint to a sturdy structural part of the stand and fasten its other end to a suitable wall point using hardware and instructions appropriate for that wall. If the television stays on the stand, restrain it separately—or wall-mount it. Anchoring only the TV does not secure an unanchored stand, and anchoring only the stand does not keep an unsecured TV from tipping.

Why should you secure the stand and television separately?

A TV stand and the television sitting on it are two distinct tip-over hazards. A restraint between the stand and wall helps prevent the furniture from tipping; a TV strap or compatible wall mount addresses the television. One does not automatically do the other’s job. Treat each as a separate item when you plan the installation and check the finished setup.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) estimated an average of 17,800 emergency-department-treated injuries per year from tip-overs involving televisions, furniture and appliances combined during 2020–2022. Children under 18 accounted for 44% of those estimated injuries. These figures cover the three product categories together, not TV stands alone.

The CPSC also reported 217 U.S. tip-over fatalities during 2013–2022, 71% of which involved children. That is a reported count across the period, not an annual estimate or a figure specific to TV stands. The numbers show why it is worth addressing both the furniture and the screen rather than assuming one anchor covers both.

The key practical distinction is where each restraint connects. The furniture restraint must connect a strong point on the stand to an appropriate point on the wall. The television needs its own suitable restraint if it remains on the stand. A television secured to a wall does not automatically secure a separate piece of furniture beneath it, and a stand connected to the wall does not keep a loose television from sliding or tipping off its top.

What should you have or check before installation?

Before installing a furniture anti-tip anchor kit for a TV stand, identify the stand’s construction, the wall construction and whether the television will remain on top. The stand and restraint manufacturers’ instructions determine the suitable attachment points and hardware; there is no universal screw size or kit arrangement that can be assumed to fit every setup.

  • The stand’s instructions: Look for an approved place to attach a bracket or strap to a strong structural part of the furniture. If the instructions identify a specific attachment point, use it rather than choosing a more convenient but weaker part of the stand.
  • The wall: Determine whether you are fastening into a suitable stud, masonry or another wall construction. The attachment method and fasteners must suit the material. A wall being covered by drywall does not make an arbitrary drywall screw a suitable structural attachment.
  • The restraint kit: Check that its furniture-side attachment works with the stand and that its wall-side instructions suit your wall. A kit only provides restraint when it is installed as directed. Check the instructions for both ends, not just the strap or connector between them.
  • The television: If it will remain on the stand, plan a separate TV restraint or a compatible wall mount. Confirm that the proposed restraint works with the actual television and wall.
  • Installation help: If the wall structure is uncertain, the stand has no sound attachment point, or the supplied hardware does not fit, pause and seek advice from the manufacturer or a qualified installer instead of improvising.

A stud finder can help locate studs in a typical framed wall, but it is only a locating aid. It does not determine whether the chosen position, furniture attachment, fastener or installation method is suitable. If you cannot confidently identify the wall construction or interpret the instructions, resolve that uncertainty before installing rather than treating a guess as an anchor point.

How do you anchor a TV stand to the wall?

Follow the stand and restraint makers’ instructions for the exact positions and hardware. The general sequence below explains what each part of the job must accomplish; it does not replace the instructions for your particular kit or wall. A furniture anti-tip anchor kit for TV stand use should provide a connection between suitable furniture and wall attachment points, but the kit’s own instructions govern its installation.

  1. Find a suitable furniture attachment point. Identify a strong structural member that can accept the furniture-side bracket or strap. Do not treat a thin stapled-on back panel, fragile trim or weak edge as a reliable anchor point. If you cannot identify a suitable point, ask the stand manufacturer or an installer before proceeding. The fact that a bracket can be screwed into a surface does not make that surface strong enough to serve as the furniture-side connection.
  2. Choose a wall attachment method for the actual wall. For a typical framed wall, locate a suitable stud and follow the kit’s drilling and fastening directions. A stud finder can help locate studs, but using one does not by itself establish that a particular point or installation is suitable. Masonry and other nonstandard walls require a fastening method and hardware appropriate to that material. If you do not know what is behind the wall or what fastener is appropriate, get advice instead of substituting a generic fastener.
  3. Attach the furniture end and wall end as specified. Use the positions and hardware described by the stand and restraint manufacturers. Join and adjust the restraint according to the kit instructions. Do not substitute an arbitrary drywall-only screw or adhesive for a structurally suitable wall attachment, and do not assume that a supplied but unused kit offers protection. Use the specified parts at both ends; an otherwise suitable strap cannot compensate for a weak furniture connection or unsuitable wall attachment.
  4. Restrain the television separately if it stays on the stand. Install TV anti-tip safety straps as directed, or use a compatible TV wall mount. Confirm that the proposed strap or mount works with the actual television and wall. A TV restraint does not remove the need to anchor the stand. If the television is wall-mounted, the mount addresses the television, but the stand still needs its own restraint if it remains in place and presents a tip-over hazard.
  5. Reduce reasons for children to climb. Keep tempting items off furniture and manage cords so they are less likely to invite climbing. These measures and supervision are additional precautions, not substitutes for anchoring.

Do not assume that one installation sequence, screw size, strap length or loading capacity applies to all restraint kits. The appropriate details depend on the specific stand, kit and wall. Use the supplied instructions and the hardware specified for that installation; if the instructions do not cover your circumstances, contact the manufacturer or a qualified installer.

Which restraint addresses each tip-over risk?

Choose the restraint based on what must be secured. The stand and television may both need attention, even when one is wall-mounted or restrained. Compare the proposed solution against the actual object it will secure, the available attachment points and the construction of the wall.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Option What it is intended to secure What it does not secure by itself
Furniture anti-tip bracket or strap The TV stand, by connecting a suitable structural furniture point to a suitable wall point. The television sitting on the stand.
TV anti-tip safety strap The television, using an arrangement compatible with the actual TV and wall. An unanchored TV stand.
Compatible TV wall mount The television, when installed for that TV and wall. A separate stand that remains in the room.

When considering a furniture restraint kit, check whether the specific kit claims compliance with ASTM F3096-23, the voluntary tip-over restraint kit specification identified by the CPSC. Do not infer that a kit complies just because it is sold as an anti-tip product; verify the claim for the actual kit. A specification reference is a point to check when comparing products, not a substitute for confirming that the kit and its installation suit your furniture and wall.

When deciding between TV anti-tip safety straps and a compatible TV wall mount, first decide whether the television needs to stay on the stand. In either case, check compatibility with the actual television and wall. Then consider the stand separately: neither a TV strap nor a TV wall mount automatically secures a stand left in the room. Conversely, a furniture bracket or strap is not a TV restraint.

DIY installation may be reasonable when the wall construction, suitable attachment points and manufacturer directions are clear. A stud finder can assist with locating studs in a framed wall, but it cannot resolve uncertainty about unusual construction or an unsuitable stand. If the wall is complex, the structure is uncertain, or the stand offers no sound attachment point, professional installation advice may be the safer choice. No tool alone makes an installation safe.

What if the wall, stand or supplied hardware is unusual?

Do not force a standard installation when the furniture or wall does not provide a suitable attachment point. A weak connection can undermine the purpose of the restraint, and the available guidance does not establish that one universal kit fits every stand or wall. A restraint with one end attached properly and the other attached to a weak point is not a reliable solution.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
  • No sturdy point on the stand: Consult the stand manufacturer or a qualified installer about a suitable solution rather than attaching to thin backing, trim or a weak edge. Do not assume that adding more fasteners to a weak panel makes it a suitable structural point.
  • Unknown or nonstandard wall construction: Identify the wall type and use a method and fasteners intended for it. Masonry and other nonstandard walls require a wall-appropriate approach, not an assumption that standard framed-wall directions apply. If you cannot determine what is appropriate, get installation advice before drilling or fastening.
  • Kit hardware does not fit: Do not swap in an unverified screw, rely on adhesive, or leave one end unattached. Ask the kit or stand manufacturer, or a qualified installer, for a suitable option. The fact that a replacement part fits through a bracket does not establish that it is appropriate for the wall or furniture.
  • TV remains on the furniture: Treat its restraint as a separate decision. Verify compatibility of a TV strap or wall mount with the actual television and wall. Do not count the stand restraint as protection for the screen.

In these cases, pausing is better than improvising. If the instructions do not describe your wall, if there is no sound furniture attachment point, or if the supplied parts do not fit the intended installation, seek a solution from the product maker or a qualified installer before relying on the restraint.

What other precautions help reduce tip-over risk?

Anchoring is the core furniture restraint, but the CPSC’s prevention guidance also recommends reducing children’s incentives to climb. Keep attractive objects off furniture and manage cords so they do not encourage pulling or climbing. Supervision and a less tempting setup can supplement an anchor; neither makes an unanchored stand safe.

These precautions address behavior around the furniture, not the attachment itself. They are useful additions, but they do not replace connecting the stand to a suitable wall point or securing a television that remains on the stand. A room that seems childproofed is not a substitute for proper anchoring.

How can you tell whether the setup addresses both hazards?

Use this final check to confirm that the stand and television have not been treated as a single object:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The furniture restraint connects a strong part of the stand to an appropriate point on the wall.
  • The wall attachment method and hardware suit the wall construction and follow the kit instructions.
  • If the TV remains on the stand, it has its own suitable restraint; if it is wall-mounted, the mount is compatible with the TV and wall.
  • No improvised weak attachment has been substituted where the instructions or hardware do not fit.
  • Tempting items and climb-inviting cords have been addressed as supplemental precautions.

If any of these checks cannot be met, do not assume the setup is secure. Resolve the uncertain attachment with the manufacturer or a qualified installer before relying on it. The purpose of this check is not to test the restraint by force, but to make sure the required furniture and television connections have each been addressed using an appropriate method.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are the CPSC tip-over injury figures specific to TV stands?

No. The CPSC’s 17,800 annual average for 2020–2022 combines televisions, furniture and appliances, and the 44% share for children under 18 uses that same combined estimate. The fatality count and child share cover reported U.S. tip-over deaths during 2013–2022, not TV stands alone.

What does ASTM F3096-23 refer to?

It is the voluntary specification for tip-over restraint kits identified by the CPSC. The standard’s existence does not establish that any particular kit complies, so check the claim for the specific product.

Does the CPSC recommend anchoring a TV that is not wall-mounted?

Yes. Its Anchor It! guidance says: “Televisions that are not wall mounted should still be anchored to the wall.” That advice concerns the television itself; it is not a reason to leave its stand unanchored.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Will anchoring the TV stand secure the television on top?

No. The stand restraint helps secure the furniture to the wall; the television needs its own suitable restraint if it remains on the stand. A compatible TV wall mount also addresses the television, not a separate stand left in place.

Can I attach a TV stand anti-tip strap to drywall with any screw?

Do not assume an arbitrary drywall-only screw is a suitable structural attachment. Follow the kit instructions for the actual wall. Typical framed walls call for a suitable stud attachment; masonry and other wall constructions need methods and fasteners appropriate to their material.

What if I cannot find a strong point on the stand or do not know the wall type?

Pause rather than fastening to thin backing, trim, a weak edge or an uncertain wall point. Ask the stand or kit manufacturer, or a qualified installer, for a suitable solution.

Is a stud finder enough to ensure a safe installation?

No. It can help locate studs in typical framed walls, but it does not establish that the furniture attachment, fastener or complete installation is suitable. Follow the kit instructions and get help if the construction or attachment is uncertain.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do cord management and keeping objects off the stand replace an anti-tip anchor?

No. Managing cords and removing tempting items can reduce reasons for children to climb, but these precautions supplement proper anchoring; they do not secure an unanchored stand or an unsecured television.

The Bottom Line

Secure the TV stand and television as separate hazards: connect a sturdy part of the stand to a wall point using the kit and hardware suited to that wall, then separately restrain or wall-mount the TV. If the attachment point, wall or supplied hardware is uncertain, do not improvise—ask the manufacturer or a qualified installer.
