More FPS usually comes from fixing a bottleneck—CPU, GPU, storage, network, or memory pressure. People often say “allocate more RAM,” but Windows and Steam don’t provide a simple per-game RAM slider. What you can do is ensure the game has enough working memory by freeing RAM, confirming the game is 64-bit, and adding reliable memory headroom with virtual memory (pagefile).
This guide shows practical, publication-grade steps that work on real systems. You’ll learn how to reduce background memory pressure, tune Windows virtual memory with concrete numbers, and use Steam launch options only where they can genuinely help.

Reality Check: Can You Allocate More RAM to a Steam Game?
Steam doesn’t let you assign a fixed amount of RAM to a specific game. RAM allocation is handled by Windows/macOS memory managers. Games request memory at runtime; they don’t usually run inside a “RAM quota” controlled by Steam.

However, you can still influence outcomes:
- Reduce competing usage (close background apps, browser tabs, overlays).
- Ensure the game is 64-bit (64-bit builds can use much more memory).
- Increase available headroom with virtual memory (pagefile) when physical RAM runs low.
- Improve system stability so the game doesn’t thrash memory (which causes stutter and FPS dips).
Think “give the game room to breathe,” not “force-assign RAM.”
Prerequisites Before You Touch Settings
Before changing anything, confirm you’re actually memory constrained. A quick check saves hours of guesswork.
Check your RAM usage while the game is running
On Windows 10/11, open Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc), go to the Performance tab, and watch:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Memory: watch the Committed value and whether In use is near 90–100%.
- Stutter: if you see periodic hitching, memory pressure is a common cause.
Also open the Processes tab, sort by Memory, and note which apps are hogging RAM.
Verify you meet the game’s recommended specs
Many games list “recommended” RAM that assumes a typical Windows environment. If you run 8 GB and the game recommends 16 GB, you’ll often see worse frame pacing—even if FPS occasionally looks okay on average.
Method 1 (Most Effective): Free RAM and Reduce Background Load
If your RAM is tight, the fastest improvement is to reduce what’s competing with the game. You’re not changing how the game allocates memory—you’re lowering memory demand elsewhere.
Close memory-heavy apps (practical targets)
Common offenders include:
- Browser with dozens of tabs (especially Chrome/Edge with heavy extensions)
- Launchers (Epic, Ubisoft Connect, EA app) if they’re updating
- Discord and screen-sharing features
- Overlay tools (GeForce Experience overlay, Xbox Game Bar capture, MSI Afterburner overlays—depends on your setup)
- Video editors and background upscalers
Restart once before a session
A simple reboot can clear memory leaks and reduce cache fragmentation for long-running sessions. If you’ve been up for days, try a restart before testing FPS again.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDisable startup items that steal RAM
- Open Task Manager → Startup apps.
- Disable items you don’t need for gaming (right-click → Disable).
- Restart and retest the same game area.
Method 2: Confirm the Game Is 64-bit and Actually Uses More Memory
If a game is 32-bit, it can hit address space limits even if you have plenty of RAM. Modern games are usually 64-bit, but it’s still worth verifying.

Check the running executable in Task Manager
- Start the game.
- Open Task Manager → Processes.
- Find the game process → right-click → Open file location.
Then verify whether it’s a 64-bit build. For many titles, the process name includes context (or you can check the game’s store page/specs for the platform build type).
Make sure you’re not running a legacy “compatibility” mode
Compatibility settings can slow things down and change how memory is used. If you tweaked compatibility in the past, undo it and test again.
Method 3: Adjust Windows Virtual Memory (Pagefile) for More Headroom
Virtual memory (the pagefile) is not “RAM,” but it prevents hard failures and reduces stutter when physical RAM runs low. When a game requests memory and Windows runs out, the pagefile can provide the required backing store.
Turn off memory overload by setting a controlled pagefile
- Press Windows key, search Advanced system settings, open it.
- Under Performance, click Settings.
- Go to the Advanced tab.
- In Virtual memory, click Change.
Recommended pagefile sizing (starting points)
Use these common, conservative starting points. Adjust after one test if you still see heavy memory pressure.
| Your RAM | Suggested pagefile (Initial) | Suggested pagefile (Maximum) |
|---|---|---|
| 16 GB | 8,192 MB | 16,384 MB |
| 32 GB | 8,192 MB | 24,576 MB |
| 8 GB | 16,384 MB | 32,768 MB |
Example: If you have 16 GB RAM, set Initial to 8192 and Maximum to 16384 (values are in MB).
Also set it to the fastest drive you have—preferably your SSD. If Windows is installed on SSD, keep the pagefile there.
Apply and reboot
- Click Set, then OK.
- When prompted, reboot.
- Re-test in the same in-game area and compare frame pacing.
Method 4: Use Steam Launch Options Carefully (What Helps, What Doesn’t)
Steam launch options can change how a game starts, which sometimes improves stability or performance. But they generally don’t provide a general “RAM allocator” switch.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Still, there are a few categories worth knowing.
Where to find launch options
- Open Steam.
- Go to Library.
- Right-click the game → Properties.
- Click General.
- Look for Launch Options.
Try only options that match your specific engine/game
Launch options are game-specific. Examples of what sometimes helps (but only for certain titles):

- Language/region tweaks (rarely impact FPS)
- “-windowed” or resolution switches (can reduce GPU load in some setups)
- “-novid” (cuts intro stutter, not runtime FPS)
- Memory-related flags (exist for some engines, but the correct flag varies wildly)
Using the wrong flag can do nothing or make performance worse. If you’re searching for “heap size” style flags, verify they match the game’s engine and version.
Practical workflow for safe testing
- Record your baseline FPS and frametimes (use your usual overlay).
- Add one launch option change at a time.
- Restart the game fully (quit and relaunch).
- Test the same benchmark scene or timed run.
Method 5: Raise Process Priority and CPU Affinity (Indirect Memory Gains)
This doesn’t “allocate more RAM,” but it can reduce stutter caused by scheduling delays. When a game misses timing, it can increase CPU workload spikes and indirectly worsen memory pressure.
Raise priority for the game process
- Start the game.
- Open Task Manager → Processes.
- Right-click the game process → Go to details.
- Right-click again → Set priority.
- Try Above normal first.
Avoid Realtime priority—it can destabilize your system.

- In Task Manager → Details, right-click the game → Set affinity.
- On a system with many threads, try enabling fewer cores (e.g., a “physical-core only” approach) only if you know your CPU layout.
- Test and revert if performance worsens.
Do this when you’re consistently seeing frametime spikes.
Method 6: macOS and Steam (What You Can Tune on macOS)
macOS memory management is different from Windows. You won’t find a direct pagefile equivalent you can tune like Windows. Still, you can reduce memory pressure and improve stability.
Restart and close background apps
On macOS, free up RAM by quitting heavy apps (Chrome tabs, design tools, video editors). A restart before a test session often matters more than people expect.
Check Activity Monitor
- Open Activity Monitor (Spotlight search).
- Go to the Memory tab.
- Launch the Steam game and watch:
- If memory pressure is high, close additional apps or reduce in-game settings.
Use storage sanity checks
On macOS, slow storage can cause asset streaming stalls that feel like “RAM problems.” Ensure your game is on a fast drive and you have enough free space.
When “More RAM” Doesn’t Fix FPS: Common Bottlenecks
If you have enough headroom and RAM usage stays moderate, increasing memory isn’t the fix. Here are common causes that mimic memory issues.

GPU-bound
If GPU utilization sits near 90–100% during gameplay, you’re GPU-limited. Raising settings in-game can reduce FPS; freeing RAM won’t.
CPU-bound
If CPU threads spike near 90–100% and frametime spikes correlate with simulation-heavy scenes (cities, explosions, crowds), CPU is the limiter. Tweaks like priority/affinity may help, but RAM tweaks won’t create free performance.
Disk streaming bottlenecks
Games running from an HDD can stutter as assets stream. FPS average might look fine but frametimes will hitch. SSD placement is often more impactful than RAM tuning.

Use this as a repeatable workflow. Don’t change ten things at once.
1) Confirm memory pressure
- Windows Task Manager: is Memory in use near max, and is Committed high?
- If no, move on to GPU/CPU checks.
2) Reduce in-game memory demand
- Lower texture quality and texture streaming settings.
- Reduce shadow quality and volumetrics (these often drive VRAM and system memory activity).
- Disable heavy post-processing if you’re testing stability.
3) Check for background overlays and recording
Turn off overlays (Xbox Game Bar, Discord overlay, browser overlays) and stop recording/streaming temporarily. Overlays can add CPU/GPU overhead and cause stutter.
4) Update GPU drivers and verify game files
- Update your GPU driver (NVIDIA/AMD/Intel) to a current stable release.
- In Steam: Library → right-click game → Properties → Installed Files → Verify integrity of game files.
Corrupted assets can cause repeated loading and performance dips.
5) If you use mods, isolate the variable
Disable mods one by one. Mods can increase memory usage and fragmentation. A “RAM fix” won’t beat a bad mod.
Best Value
- Actual memory speed may vary depending on the system, CPU, motherboard, BIOS settings, and supported memory configuration. DDR4 3200MHz modules may operate at lower speeds such as 2933MHz or 2666MHz when supported by the host system. Please check your device specifications and compatibility before purchase.

6) Test with a clean boot
Windows clean boot reduces driver/app conflicts. It’s the best way to figure out whether a background service is causing memory thrash.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Assuming RAM equals FPS: RAM helps when you’re memory constrained or stuttering from memory pressure.
- Setting pagefile to 0: Don’t. Even on “fast PCs,” Windows expects virtual memory to be available for stability.
- Over-aggressive pagefile sizing: Huge pagefiles (like 200 GB) waste disk space and can increase wear without improving frametimes.
- Multiple simultaneous launch options: If you change five flags and performance improves, you won’t know which one mattered.
- Ignoring VRAM: Many settings “eat” VRAM first. If your GPU runs out of VRAM, FPS will tank even with plenty of system RAM.
Alternatives That Usually Beat RAM Tweaks
If your system has headroom already, these are the higher-yield steps for FPS improvements.
Upgrade path that actually helps
- Go from 8 GB → 16 GB if you frequently play modern titles (especially open-world or modded games).
- Go from 16 GB → 32 GB if you multitask heavily, run heavy mods, or do streaming/recording while gaming.
Use an SSD and check free space
Ensure the game library and the specific game install are on an SSD. Low free space can degrade IO and increase asset streaming stalls.
Tune in-game settings to reduce frametime spikes
- Cap FPS (use in-game limiter or driver limiter) to reduce GPU/CPU burstiness.
- Use consistent settings for textures and shadows to avoid streaming spikes.
FAQs
Can I force Steam to give a game a specific amount of RAM?
No. Steam doesn’t provide per-game RAM quotas. Games request memory dynamically, and Windows decides how to fulfill those requests.
Will increasing pagefile size increase FPS?
It can improve stutter and frame pacing when you’re memory constrained. If you’re GPU- or CPU-bound, FPS may stay the same even with a bigger pagefile.
How much RAM do I need for modern Steam games?
Many modern titles target 16 GB as a practical baseline. For heavy multitasking, 32 GB can reduce memory pressure and improve consistency—especially if you keep browsers, Discord, and launchers open.
Why do I see high FPS but still feel stuttering?
Average FPS can hide frametime spikes caused by memory thrash, IO streaming, or background CPU contention. Check frametime or stutter patterns, not just the FPS number.
Recommended Free Tools
Do RAM tweaks help multiplayer?
Only indirectly. If the issue is server latency or packet loss, memory tuning won’t fix it. If you’re stuttering locally due to memory pressure, it can still help.
Bottom Line
You can’t directly allocate a fixed amount of RAM to a Steam game, but you can create the conditions that allow the game to use memory effectively. Start by freeing RAM, verifying you’re running a 64-bit build, and then tune Windows virtual memory with sensible pagefile values (and put it on the SSD).
If RAM isn’t the bottleneck, focus on GPU/CPU limits, frametime analysis, and storage/IO. The goal isn’t “more RAM”—it’s fewer stalls, steadier frametimes, and higher playable FPS.
