On PS5, adjust headset volume at Settings > Sound > Volume > Headphones, set microphone input from the Control Center’s Mic card, and configure headphone 3D Audio at Settings > Sound > 3D Audio (Headphones). If your headset has physical controls, check those too: a console setting cannot compensate for a headset’s own volume, mute, or connection issue.

- If you want the PS5 to switch audio output when you connect a headset, enable Switch Output Device Automatically.
Output to Headphones determines what audio is sent to the headset. Mono Audio for Headphones duplicates the same signal in both ears, rather than keeping distinct left- and right-channel audio. If supported by the headset, Sidetone Volume controls how loudly you hear your own voice while using the microphone.
How do I make my PS5 microphone louder or quieter?
Set the microphone input device and adjust its level from the Control Center. Speak at your usual volume while watching the input meter, and move the level until it reaches the Good range.

Set the level using your ordinary speaking voice rather than shouting into the mic. A level that is too high can contribute to echo or unwanted pickup; one that is too low can make your voice difficult for other players to hear.

The DualSense controller’s MUTE button can mute the microphone and speaker output. Press it again to restore audio. If your headset has its own mute control, check that control too when the console’s input meter does not respond as expected.
How do I stop my PS5 headset from echoing?
First reduce the microphone level slightly. PlayStation’s recommended starting adjustment is to move the Microphone Level fader 2 to 4 notches to the left; if echo persists, reset the headset according to its manual.

- If the echo remains, follow the headset manual’s reset instructions.
There is no single microphone setting that fixes every echo: headset design and setup differ. If reducing the mic level makes your voice too quiet, restore some input level and check that the correct microphone is selected.

Enable it in the dedicated headphone audio settings. You can use one of the five preset profiles or create a personalized profile based on how you perceive the console’s test sounds.

- To personalize the sound, select Create Personalized 3D Audio Profile and follow the prompts. Listen to sounds from different positions and angles, then answer where they seem to come from.
- Alternatively, select one of the five preset profiles.
- Turn on Enable 3D Audio for Headphones.
- If you created a personalized profile, turn on Apply Personalized 3D Audio Profile to use it.
Turning off headphone 3D Audio returns headphone output to stereo. The personalized profile reflects how you hear the test sounds, so you can run the setup again if your listening conditions or preferences change.
Does every PS5 headset support 3D Audio?
PlayStation says USB and analog 3.5 mm headsets can provide PS5 3D Audio, subject to device compatibility. Direct Bluetooth wireless headsets are not supported on PS5, so do not assume a Bluetooth headset will connect directly just because it can pair with other devices. Check the exact headset model’s PS5 compatibility before buying or troubleshooting it.
What headset controls work, and what changes with a wired connection?
Headsets may provide controls in addition to the PS5 settings, but their functions depend on the model and connection. For example, Sony’s PULSE 3D wireless headset includes master volume, mic mute, chat/game balance, and mic monitoring; its manual describes separate CHAT and GAME buttons for relative balance and a MONITOR switch for hearing your own voice.
On that headset, connecting with an audio cable disables the wireless-only chat/game balance, mic mute, mic monitoring, and volume controls. Use its wireless adaptor when you need those functions. Sony lists up to 12 hours of wireless play in 2022 product documentation; treat that as an estimate that varies with use, not a guaranteed runtime.

The PULSE 3D is tuned for PS5 3D Audio and has dual noise-cancelling microphones, according to Sony’s product information. It is one option, not a requirement: compatible USB and analog stereo headsets are also alternatives. Confirm compatibility for the specific model because PlayStation notes that not all devices work with the console.
What should I do if a wireless headset skips or drops out?
USB 3.0 devices near the console’s wireless adapter can interfere with a wireless headset connection. PlayStation’s suggested remedies are to move USB 3.0 devices away from the console or increase the distance between the adapter and those devices with a USB extension cable.
