To set up headphone 3D audio on PS5, open Settings > Sound > 3D Audio (Headphones), choose Create Personalized 3D Audio Profile, and follow the listening prompts. Turn on Apply Personalized 3D Audio Profile to use that profile. How do I set up 3D audio for headphones on PS5?

The profile-creation prompts and the playback toggle do different jobs. Creating a profile does not by itself mean headphone 3D audio is enabled for playback, and enabling headphone 3D audio does not mean that you have created a personalized profile. If you have completed calibration but want to listen in 3D audio, check that Apply Personalized 3D Audio Profile is on and that Enable 3D Audio for Headphones is enabled.

If you do not want a personalized profile, you can use a preset instead. The profile setting and the 3D-audio playback setting should still be understood separately: the first determines whether the personal profile or a preset is applied, while the second selects 3D audio or stereo output for headphones. That distinction can help you diagnose a setup that behaves differently from what you expected without assuming that the calibration step failed.
Should I create a personalized profile or use a preset?
A personalized profile involves identifying sound position and direction in the guided exercise. A preset skips that exercise; PlayStation documents five preset settings but does not name or compare them in its cited headphone instructions. If Apply Personalized 3D Audio Profile is off, PS5 uses a preset profile. The distinction matters because the same PlayStation support guidance describes a separate setup for 3D audio through TV speakers. That setup uses the controller microphone to measure room acoustics and advises sitting in the usual listening position. It also recommends measuring again after changing the TV position, seating, or room environment. Those instructions apply to TV speakers, not the headphone profile.
In other words, the fact that a TV-speaker setup takes the listener’s room and seat into account does not mean that headphone profile creation uses the same procedure. For headphones, the stated procedure is to listen to sounds and identify their position and direction. If you move to a different seat, PlayStation’s headphone instructions do not say that you must start over; likewise, they do not make any claim that seating position changes the profile. Keep the two setup paths separate rather than importing the TV-speaker recalibration rule into the headphone workflow.
If you are configuring TV speakers rather than headphones, that is a different setup and the relevant position guidance is different: use your usual listening position for measurement, and measure again if the TV position, seating, or room environment changes. Do not use that advice as a substitute for the headphone menu steps above.
What if the menu or settings are unavailable?
First check the connected audio device and the console’s output configuration. PlayStation cautions that not all devices work with PS5 and that available audio settings can vary with the device and configuration. As a result, the exact controls shown may not be identical for every connection or headset. The support guidance does not provide a universal compatibility list or guarantee that every headphone model exposes every option.
- Confirm that the headphones are connected and selected as the output device.
- Review the console’s audio-output controls if sound is going to a different device. PlayStation lists output-device selection, automatic device switching, headphone output selection, and headphone volume among the relevant controls.
- Return to Settings > Sound > 3D Audio (Headphones) and check the profile and 3D-audio toggles once the intended headphones are in use.
- Check which of the two profile paths you chose. If you want the personalized profile, make sure Apply Personalized 3D Audio Profile is on; if it is off, PS5 uses a preset.
- Check the playback mode separately. Enable 3D Audio for Headphones must be enabled for headphone 3D audio; disabling it returns headphone playback to stereo.
These checks follow the distinction between the connected output, the profile being applied, and the format selected for headphone playback. They are useful because a missing or unexpected setting does not automatically mean that the profile prompts were completed incorrectly. PlayStation’s guidance says that device and configuration can affect available settings, but it does not identify one universal cause for every missing control.

If the setting remains unavailable, the documented guidance supports checking device compatibility and output configuration; it does not establish a specific fix for every model or connection. Avoid assuming that a particular headset is required just because an option is not visible. PlayStation’s instructions do not say that users must buy a new headset to use headphone 3D audio.
Are Audio Focus and equalizer settings part of 3D-audio setup?
No. Audio Focus is a separate headphone feature for emphasizing quiet sounds in certain frequencies; it is not a required step for creating or applying a 3D-audio profile. PlayStation says Audio Focus requires current system software and headphones, and advises checking volume because sounds may be loud. Those requirements and the volume caution apply to Audio Focus, not as extra calibration steps for 3D audio.
PlayStation also associates equalizer and 3D-audio settings with some of its headset products, including PULSE Explore, PULSE 3D, and PULSE Elite. Keep the features distinct when troubleshooting: use the headphone 3D Audio menu for the profile and stereo/3D playback choice; treat Audio Focus and equalizer controls as separate features. Does PS5 require a particular headset?

Before considering a new headset, check whether the current headphones are connected and selected as the output device, then inspect the available settings. If a control is missing, the official guidance leaves open that device compatibility or configuration may be relevant; it does not say that purchasing a named product is the required solution.
Which settings should I check when switching between stereo and 3D audio?
There are two useful checks. First, Enable 3D Audio for Headphones determines whether headphone playback is in 3D audio or stereo. Second, Apply Personalized 3D Audio Profile determines whether the created personalized profile is used; if it is off, PS5 uses a preset profile. Neither control replaces the other.
For example, if you have created a profile but the headphone output is set to stereo, the profile-creation step alone does not switch playback into 3D audio. If you enable 3D audio but turn off the apply-personalized option, PS5 uses a preset rather than your personal profile. Checking both labels makes it clearer which mode and profile the console is set to use, without inferring that a change to one setting automatically changes the other.
