To use a game with RecompStore, install the store on a jailbroken PS5, open that game’s page, and select a backup you made from a game you own under Your game files. RecompStore installs the port and arranges the files it needs; it does not provide the original game. The right backup varies by title: one port may need an Xbox 360 ISO, another an N64 ROM, and another a GameCube disc image or console package.
This guide covers RecompStore on PS5, including its prerequisites, file formats, transfer options, and examples for Grand Theft Auto IV and Super Mario 64. It does not explain how to jailbreak a PS5 or where to download game files. Copyright and anti-circumvention rules differ by country, so check local law before making a backup.

What do I need before installing RecompStore?
RecompStore is a free homebrew app store for a jailbroken PS5. It installs native PS5 ports of recompiled games, along with some emulators, apps, and tools. A port is the software; you provide the original game files it needs.
The store’s stated prerequisites are a jailbroken PS5 with kstuff, a payload loader listening on port 9021, and ShadowMountPlus 1.7 Beta 5 or newer. The payload loader examples named by the project include etaHEN and elfldr. This article does not provide jailbreak instructions; use the setup path appropriate to your console, then follow the store’s official Get page.

- A computer on the same network if you plan to send the installer over the network.
- A USB drive or access to the PS5’s files for transferring your own game backup.
- The specific file or files listed on the individual game’s RecompStore page and the port’s README.
There is no single file format that works for every game in the catalog. Check the game’s page and its linked project documentation before you dump or copy anything; the expected console, region, edition, and update can all matter.
How do I install RecompStore?
Install the official store installer after the PS5 prerequisites are running. The installer adds the store to the home screen, and the store can then update itself.
- Prepare the PS5 with the prerequisites above, including a payload loader listening on port 9021.
- Download
RecompStore-Installer.elffrom the latest RecompStore GitHub release. The official Get page provides the installation instructions. - Send the ELF to the PS5 using a payload sender. The documented command-line example, run from a computer on the same network, is
nc -N <your PS5's IP> 9021 < RecompStore-Installer.elf. Replace the example IP text with your PS5’s actual address. - Open RecompStore from the PS5 home screen. ShadowMountPlus adds it to the home screen as part of the documented installation path.
The installer downloads the store package, checks it against a GitHub SHA-256 value, and unpacks it under /data/homebrew/PPSA92000, or into the directory where the store already lives. RecompStore’s title ID is PPSA92000. A manual alternative is to download the store ZIP from GitHub releases, unzip it, copy its folder to /data/homebrew/ over FTP, and register it as other homebrew is registered on the console.
No account is required. Pairing a phone or computer is optional: the PS5 shows a code, with a QR code available in Settings. For the documented latest release as of November 2026, RecompStore 2.7.3 was published on 26 October 2026. It adds Bahasa Indonesia, Thai, and Ukrainian, follows the PS5 language or a language selected in Settings, and includes Settings > Storage > Repair RecompStore to redownload the store’s list, charts, and pictures.
How do I add my ROM or disc image to RecompStore?
Copy your own backup to a USB drive or the PS5, open the game’s page, and select the file under Your game files. The store then puts the needed files where that port expects them and may fetch a required Title Update.
- Open the game’s page in RecompStore and check the listed requirements. Confirm the console source, format, region or edition, and any required update against the port’s README.
- Make a backup from your own game media or console. Do not use a file downloaded from a ROM or game-download site as a substitute for your own dump.
- Copy the backup to a USB drive or to the PS5. For a manual transfer, the documented fallback for GTA IV is FTP to the port’s
/data/homebrew/<titleID>/install/folder. - On the game’s page, choose the backup under Your game files. If the port prompts for a first-run conversion or installation, follow that game’s prompt; the steps differ by port.
- Launch the game from RecompStore or the PS5 home screen. ShadowMountPlus is refreshed so newly installed games appear on the home screen.
The store describes this feature simply: “The port needs files from a game you own. On the game’s page in the store, choose them under Your game files and the store sets everything up.” Its README also says: “No game files are hosted here or in any repository the store links to. Every game needs your own legally obtained copy, which the store sets up for you from your disc image.”
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhat file does each RecompStore game need?
Use the individual game page as the authority. Catalog examples show why it is unsafe to assume that any dump of a game with the right name will work: some ports require a particular region or exact image size, and some accept a console package rather than a disc image.

| Example in the catalog | Backup type described | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Grand Theft Auto IV | Xbox 360 USA disc image, .iso |
The port README specifies an exact byte size and does not support non-USA discs. |
| Geometry Wars 2 | Xbox Live Arcade package | Check the game page for the package requirements. |
| Super Mario 64 | N64 ROM | The PS5 page accepts the US or JP release; it can convert .n64 or .v64 to .z64. |
| Wind Waker, Super Mario Sunshine, Dusklight, Animal Crossing | GameCube disc image or the source specified by the port | Eternal Darkness specifically requires a European GameCube disc. |
| GTA IV episodes | Xbox 360 packages copied from the console | The packages have no file extension; retain their names. |
Other catalog examples include Xbox 360 disc-image ports such as Skate 3, FIFA Street, NBA Street Homecourt, and Ninja Gaiden II; N64 ports such as Rush 2: Extreme Racing USA, Wave Race 64, GoldenEye 007, and Perfect Dark; and GameCube projects based on games such as Twilight Princess. Some projects have different inputs: Halo CE uses files from a decompiled Xbox game, while OpenRCT2 and some shareware-style titles may include enough to start. PICO-8 requires the user’s own license. These are catalog patterns, not a substitute for checking the page for the particular release you want.
Grand Theft Auto IV: the Xbox 360 ISO example
The PS5 port page for title ID PPSA94004 describes a 113 MB app based on Liberty Recompiled (OZORDI) via LibertyRecompAndroid. The app downloads Title Update 8 and keeps the port updated, but you still supply the game. The elripalda/gta4-ps5 README specifies these files and sizes:
- Main game: the USA Xbox 360 disc as an ISO, exactly 7,835,492,352 bytes (7.3 GB). The expected Redump-style name is
Grand Theft Auto IV (USA) (En,Fr,De,Es,It).iso. - Title Update 8: 3,715,072 bytes (3.7 MB), named
TU_1A581VI_000000K000000.0000000000205. RecompStore fetches this update for the documented port. - Optional episodes: The Lost and Damned, about 1.8 GB, and The Ballad of Gay Tony, about 1.9 GB. The README identifies them as packages from
Content/0000000000000000/545407F2/00000002on the Xbox 360 drive. Keep their original names and omit a file extension. - Install space: about 17 GB free, according to the README.
For this title, the documented store path is to install the port, select the USA Xbox 360 ISO under Your game files, then open the app and press X on Home to install. For episodes, copy the packages into the app’s install folder and install them from the hub’s Episodes page. The manual file locations documented for the main game and update are /data/homebrew/PPSA94004/install/Grand Theft Auto IV (USA).iso and /data/homebrew/PPSA94004/install/TU_1A581VI_000000K000000.0000000000205. With a payload loader running, the README says installation runs at full drive speed; the ISO can be deleted after setup.
Do not substitute a non-USA disc, a modified or incorrectly sized rip, a PC or PS3 version, or a Title Update for another edition. Other GTA IV DLC in that folder is not listed as supported. The standalone Episodes from Liberty City disc was not established as a working source in the README; the two Xbox Live packages above are the documented path. Xbox 360 saves can be copied from Content/<profile>/545407F2/00000001/ into /data/homebrew/PPSA94004/import/, then imported from the hub’s Saves page.
Super Mario 64: the N64 ROM example
The RecompStore page describes a 24 MB PS5 app by Gary Riches, using Ghostship 3.0.0, a native port from HarbourMasters’ SM64 decompilation project. It accepts a Super Mario 64 ROM from the US or JP release. The game page says: “Bring your own Super Mario 64 ROM, the US or JP release: Recomp Store checks it, turns a .n64 or .v64 into a .z64, and puts it in the game’s folder.”
On first launch, the port asks to convert the ROM into the game’s files; press Cross as prompted. The game page says saves and settings are kept in the game’s userdata folder. Other N64 ports can follow a similar pattern, but do not assume they accept the same region or ROM revision. Read each title’s page first.
How can I dump my own game files?
The safe general process is to clean the media, read it with an appropriate dumper or the original console, verify the resulting file, and keep the backup private. NDEVR’s concise rule is: “Own it, dump it yourself, keep it private.” It also cautions: “Downloading the “same” ROM from a website is not a backup — it is an unauthorized copy, even if you own the game.” Do not download or share game files, and do not attach them to public bug reports.

This is general background, not legal advice. Copyright exceptions for personal copies and rules against bypassing technical protections vary by jurisdiction. For example, anti-circumvention rules including US DMCA §1201 can matter for encrypted or modern discs. NDEVR notes that classic unencrypted cartridges and PlayStation 1 CDs do not raise the same anti-circumvention issues as encrypted modern consoles. It also points to the US Supreme Court’s 2000 decision in Sony v. Connectix, which upheld an independently developed emulator; that does not make distributing copyrighted game copies lawful. Provenance’s ripping guidance similarly distinguishes personal backups, whose legality can vary by region, from downloading or sharing copies of games you do not own.
Dumping an N64 cartridge
N64 RecompStore projects typically use a big-endian .z64 ROM. NDEVR gives a typical cartridge dump size of 8–64 MB. Documented dumper options include an Open Source Cartridge Reader (OSCR, also called the sanni cartreader), INLretro, RetroBlaster 2.0 with an N64 adapter, and 64drive with UltraSave. NDEVR lists prebuilt OSCR units from Save the Hero Builders at about $150; availability and price can change. A Retrode 2 with an N64 adapter is another possibility, but Provenance notes CIC/lockout issues on some cartridges and prefers INLretro or OSCR for reliable N64 dumps. The Retrode 2 is discontinued and appears on the used market. Development-board compatibility can also be a concern with some setups.
dumping.guide reports RetroBlaster dump times of about 1.5 minutes for an 8 MB cartridge and about 5.5 minutes for a 32 MB cartridge, with longer times for 64 MB. These are source-reported figures, not a guarantee for every cartridge or setup. GameShark Pro, Action Replay Pro, and older copiers such as v64, z64, and cd64 are described by NDEVR as unreliable.
After dumping, verify the result. Dump twice and compare the files, or compare a checksum against a recognized database such as Redump or No-Intro when an entry exists. Clean the cartridge contacts if reads disagree. The cartridge stamp can help identify the region and game; dumping.guide gives NUS-NSME-0 as an example stamp for the USA Super Mario 64. RecompStore’s SM64 page accepts US or JP, so a different region should not be treated as interchangeable.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
For INLretro, dumping.guide documents this example command: inlretro.exe -s scripts/inlretro2.lua -c N64 -k 16384 -d LegoRacers.z64. In that example, -k specifies ROM size in kilobytes. Confirm the correct size and options for your cartridge and device rather than copying the example value blindly.
Dumping an Xbox 360 disc or package
For many catalog titles, the required source is an Xbox 360 disc image or a package copied from the original console. Xenia’s ripping guide states: “PC DVD drives cannot read Xbox 360 discs.” The discs use custom security sectors, so a standard PC optical drive will not produce the ISO required by ports such as the documented GTA IV example. Xenia estimates Xbox 360 games can range from 6 GB to over 20 GB each.
Documented backup routes include a modified Xbox 360 with RGH or JTAG and homebrew file-management tools, which can copy game files or create an ISO and transfer it over USB or FTP. A legacy Kreon-flashed DVD drive is another route for ISO dumps, but it is described as rare and outdated. The ConsoleMods guide explains that an unmodified console’s stock dashboard can install a disc to HDD or USB as an SVOD/Game on Demand-style package, but the disc is still required for a license check. A DRM-free rip requires a modified console or homebrew such as FreeMyXe or XeUnshackle; rules governing DRM circumvention and personal backups vary by country.

- Transfer Files in Seconds: Transfer files and from your laptop at speeds up to 10 Gbps with USB A 3.2 port. Extra 2 USB A 2.0 ports are perfectly for your keyboards and mouse.
For GTA IV specifically, the port requires the full USA ISO at the exact size listed above, not an extracted game folder. Episode packages and save files are separate console files. Do not download a pre-ripped ISO: Xenia’s guidance says not to download games from unofficial sources. Keep your own image private.
Dumping a GameCube disc
For GameCube titles, the ConsoleMods Wii backup guide documents CleanRip on a homebrewed Wii with Homebrew Channel. It can dump a disc to ISO. The guide specifies a FAT32 or FAT16 SD card or USB drive, or an NTFS USB drive, with at least 4.38 GB free for a single-layer disc and 7.93 GB for a dual-layer disc. FAT32 output can be split into parts that need to be combined before use.
USB Loader GX is another commonly used backup route, but it exports WBFS, a format intended for loaders. Unless a specific port says it accepts WBFS, use a CleanRip ISO. Match the required disc region as well: the RecompStore page for Eternal Darkness specifies a European GameCube disc.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How do I copy an ISO to the PS5?
The official instructions allow either a USB drive or a copy stored on the PS5. A USB 3.0 flash drive is a straightforward transfer option; 128 GB or more gives room for large Xbox 360 images and multiple backups. A portable USB SSD is a more practical choice for a larger library: Xenia’s 6 GB to over 20 GB per-game range means a handful of disc images can consume substantial space. These are storage-planning suggestions, not RecompStore minimum requirements.
Copy the file to the drive, connect it to the PS5, then select it from the game page’s Your game files picker. If you use FTP instead, the GTA IV README documents the port’s install directory as a manual fallback. Keep the dump private after installation; the store’s setup process does not grant permission to distribute the original game.

No. RecompStore’s how-to states: “An update replaces only the app. Your game files, saves, DLC and mods stay where they are.” App updates and game-file backups are separate, so updating the store is not meant to remove the data you supplied.
The Library tab shows installed titles, pending updates, and betas. The store’s repair option in version 2.7.3 re-downloads the store’s catalog list, charts, and pictures; the release notes say apps, saves, and settings stay. Patch notes for a specific game come from that game’s GitHub releases. A beta game can be unlocked with its code under Settings > Redeem a code.

If a game does not appear on the home screen after installation, ShadowMountPlus is the component the store uses to refresh home-screen entries. For a port-specific failure, use the game’s own documentation and send logs from the game’s page rather than uploading an ISO. Store issues can also be reported through RecompStore’s report page.
What should I check if a game does not install?
Start with the title’s own requirements rather than changing the file at random. A region mismatch, wrong edition, unexpected size, unsupported format, or missing update can prevent setup even when the file name looks right.
- Confirm the exact input. Check whether the page requests an ISO, ROM, package, DLC, or Title Update. A folder extracted from an ISO is not interchangeable with the ISO when a port explicitly requires the image.
- Check region and revision. GTA IV’s documented port expects a USA ISO; SM64’s page specifies US or JP. Another region or revision may not pass the port’s checks.
- Compare the file size. For GTA IV, the README specifies 7,835,492,352 bytes for the USA image. A badly sized or modified rip is not the documented input.
- Check the update pairing. A Title Update for a different edition is not a substitute. For the documented GTA IV path, RecompStore fetches Title Update 8.
- Check available space and transfer integrity. The GTA IV README calls for about 17 GB free. For any title, recopy a file if a USB transfer or dump verification indicates corruption.
- Keep diagnostics separate from game data. Use the store’s log-sending option or report page for support, and do not attach the game image itself.
RecompStore and everything in it are free, according to the official how-to; some game developers accept donations on their own pages. The store is free software under GNU GPL-3.0 or later. Its developer’s support page is on Ko-fi, but donations are optional and do not change the requirement to provide your own game files.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does RecompStore need an internet connection?
The installer downloads the store package, and the app retrieves catalog information and can fetch supported Title Updates, so network access is needed for those operations. The project’s stated instructions do not establish which games or features remain usable offline after installation.
Can I use RecompStore on Windows, Linux, or Mac?
RecompStore is the PS5 homebrew app. The related PC catalog is RecompLauncher, which covers Windows, Linux, and Mac recomp projects; it also expects you to provide the game files, and each project documents its own extraction method.
What is RecompStore’s title ID?
The store’s title ID is PPSA92000. That is different from an individual game’s title ID; for example, the documented GTA IV port uses PPSA94004.
