To activate an eSIM on a Google Pixel, open Settings > Network & internet > SIMs > Add SIM > Set up an eSIM, then complete the prompts supplied by your carrier. You can also add the eSIM during initial phone setup or transfer a line from another Android phone. The exact screens, eligibility checks and activation method depend on your Pixel model, country and carrier. If the profile is listed but inactive, enable Use SIM; if a transfer or activation still fails after a retry, the carrier must activate or reissue the eSIM.
What is a Pixel eSIM, and why do activation steps differ?
An eSIM is a carrier profile stored in the Pixel rather than on a removable plastic card. The phone still needs a carrier account and an activation process; replacing the card with software does not remove carrier or regional restrictions.

A carrier may assign the profile automatically when the Pixel is purchased through that carrier. If the phone was bought elsewhere, ask the carrier whether it supports eSIM on your exact model and confirm the device’s IMEI or device ID before starting. Google notes that carrier procedures differ, so a QR code, carrier app or manual code is not guaranteed to be available for every provider.

Which Pixel models and regions support eSIM?
eSIM capability is not identical across every Pixel variant. Model number, sales region and carrier policy all matter, so check those three details before ordering or transferring a line.
- US Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro and Pixel 10 Pro XL: Google’s current overview identifies these US versions as eSIM-only; they do not use a physical SIM tray.
- Pixel 7 and later: These phones can use two eSIM profiles at the same time only when the carrier allows that configuration. Support is not automatic for every plan or country.
- Physical-SIM conversion: Google documents conversion for Pixel 7 and later, including Pixel Fold models, subject to carrier and regional availability.
- Earlier or non-US variants: Do not infer capability from a different market’s specification. Verify the exact model with the carrier and Google’s eSIM overview.
If you are unsure which version you own, find the model and IMEI in Settings > About phone, then give those identifiers to the carrier. An unlocked phone can still lack eSIM support on a particular network or in a particular region.

If you skipped eSIM setup during the welcome screens, the manual path is Settings > Network & internet > SIMs > Add SIM > Set up an eSIM. Keep the carrier’s account information or activation instructions available while you work.
- Connect the Pixel and prepare the line. Complete the phone’s basic setup and ensure the carrier has approved eSIM service for the model, region and plan. If the phone was not purchased from that carrier, confirm the IMEI or device ID first.
- Open the eSIM wizard. Go to Settings > Network & internet > SIMs > Add SIM > Set up an eSIM. The wording can vary slightly with Android updates, but the Network & internet and SIMs menus are the relevant locations.
- Follow the carrier-supported flow. Complete whatever the carrier provides on screen. Some carriers use an account check, a QR scan or another activation method; Google does not state that one method works universally.
- Wait for the profile to appear. Return to Settings > Network & internet > SIMs and select the carrier entry. Confirm that Use SIM is enabled before testing calls, texts or mobile data.
- Restart only after the profile is present. A restart can refresh registration, but it cannot substitute for carrier activation. If no profile appears or the wizard reports that the carrier must activate the line, contact the carrier rather than repeatedly scanning unrelated codes.
Google’s new-eSIM guide says a Pixel that does not detect a SIM automatically may need carrier activation first. Treat the carrier’s instructions as authoritative for the final step.
How do I transfer an eSIM from another Android phone?
Automatic Android-to-Pixel transfer is available only when both phones meet Google’s prerequisites. The old and new phones must run Android 12 or later, have current Google Play services and use a screen lock.
Transfer during Pixel setup
- Keep the old Android phone powered on and close to the new Pixel.
- During Pixel onboarding, choose the option to transfer a SIM when it is offered.
- Select the line to move, choose Transfer and follow the activation prompts.
- Leave both phones nearby until the Pixel confirms the profile. Do not erase the old phone first; the old line may stop working when the transfer completes.
Transfer after setup is complete
On an already configured Pixel, open Settings > Network & internet > SIMs > Add SIM > Transfer SIM from another device. Keep the source phone unlocked and nearby while the wizard searches for it.

If those conditions are met and the line still does not move, the carrier may not support automatic transfer for that plan. Google’s Android transfer instructions direct users to the carrier for activation when automatic transfer is unavailable, and for persistent failures.
How do I move an eSIM from an iPhone to a Pixel?
iPhone-to-Pixel transfer is carrier-dependent and also varies with how the Pixel was purchased. Google publishes supported-carrier flows rather than one universal procedure, so do not assume that an Android transfer path or a generic QR code will work.

- Keep the iPhone switched on, unlocked and connected as instructed by the carrier.
- On the Pixel, start the SIM-transfer option during setup or use Settings > Network & internet > SIMs > Add SIM afterward if that option is offered.
- For Google’s documented iPhone pairing flow, pair the iPhone with the Pixel by scanning the QR code shown during the transfer process.
- Complete any carrier account verification, then wait for the Pixel to show the new line under Settings > Network & internet > SIMs.
The published supported-carrier list is specific to Google’s documented path; it is not a promise that every plan, model, country or software version supports iPhone transfer. If your carrier is not listed or the pairing process fails, request a carrier-assisted activation or a newly issued eSIM. See Google’s current iPhone and iPad transfer guide.
Why won’t my Pixel eSIM activate?
Start by determining whether the profile is missing, present but disabled, or blocked during transfer. Each state points to a different fix, and a physical-SIM inspection cannot repair an eSIM profile.
The eSIM is listed but inactive
Open Settings > Network & internet > SIMs and tap the relevant carrier. If Use SIM is off, turn it on. A gray carrier name and a No SIM message can mean that no profile is installed or that the listed SIM is inactive; enabling the switch distinguishes the two cases.
The Pixel never finds a SIM
For an eSIM, return to the carrier’s activation process and ask whether the profile was actually assigned to the Pixel’s IMEI or device ID. If the carrier says activation is complete but no profile appears, ask it to reissue the eSIM rather than trying an unrelated physical-SIM fix.
The problem began during a transfer
Try the transfer once more with both phones powered on, nearby and unlocked. On Android-to-Pixel moves, verify Android 12 or later, current Google Play services and a screen lock on both devices. For an iPhone move, verify that the carrier supports the documented pairing route. Google’s explicit guidance is: “If you encounter an issue when you transfer an eSIM, try again. For persistent issues, contact your carrier.”
A physical SIM is also involved
If the line uses a removable card, power the Pixel down and check that the card is seated correctly and undamaged. Google says a SIM-ejector tool or a small paperclip can open the tray; a bent or damaged card should be replaced by the carrier. This inspection applies only to a physical SIM and does not alter an eSIM profile.

Two lines are enabled but calls or data use the wrong one
Open Settings > Network & internet > SIMs and check which SIM is enabled and selected for calls, texts and mobile data. Dual-SIM behavior depends on the Pixel model and carrier, so a second profile may install successfully yet lack the combination of services you expect. Confirm the desired configuration with the carrier before deleting either profile.
Google’s broader mobile-connectivity troubleshooting guide covers the SIM-status checks and physical-card inspection described above.
What should I do if activation still fails after troubleshooting?
Carrier intervention is the correct escalation when the profile is not provisioned, a transfer is unsupported, or repeated attempts fail. Have the Pixel model, country, IMEI or device ID and the exact on-screen error ready; these details let the carrier match the eSIM to the correct device.
- Tell the carrier whether you are requesting a new activation, an Android transfer, an iPhone transfer or a physical-SIM conversion.
- Ask the carrier to verify eSIM eligibility for the exact model and plan, not merely for the Pixel family.
- If the carrier confirms eligibility, request activation or reissue of the eSIM profile tied to the Pixel’s IMEI or device ID.
- After the carrier changes the line, return to Settings > Network & internet > SIMs, enable Use SIM and test service.
Repeatedly resetting the phone, deleting a working profile or swapping hardware can make recovery harder. Preserve any functioning line until the replacement eSIM has been installed and tested.
Can I convert a physical SIM to an eSIM?
Pixel 7 and later models, including Pixel Fold, can support physical-SIM conversion where the carrier and country allow it. The conversion disables the physical SIM, so verify that the new eSIM works before throwing away the card.
- Confirm with the carrier that conversion is supported for your model, country and plan.
- Start the conversion from the Pixel’s SIM settings when the option is offered, or use the carrier’s supported activation flow.
- Wait for the eSIM profile to appear and enable Use SIM.
- Place a test call and use mobile data before removing or discarding the old card.
Because conversion availability is conditional, the absence of a conversion option does not by itself indicate a hardware fault. Google’s detailed procedure is in Convert a physical SIM to an eSIM.
Can a Pixel use two eSIMs or an eSIM plus a physical SIM?
Some Pixels support multiple active lines, but the exact combination is controlled by the model and carrier. Google states that Pixel 7 and later can use two eSIM profiles simultaneously only when the carrier permits it.
| Configuration | What determines availability | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| One eSIM | Pixel model, region and carrier eSIM support | That the profile is assigned to the correct IMEI or device ID |
| Two eSIMs | Pixel 7 or later plus carrier permission | Which line handles calls, texts and data |
| eSIM plus physical SIM | Presence of a physical tray and carrier support | Whether the model is a US Pixel 10-series eSIM-only variant |
| Converted eSIM | Pixel 7 or later, carrier and regional eligibility | That the new profile works before the physical card is discarded |
Do not generalize a configuration from a phone sold in another market. The US Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro and Pixel 10 Pro XL are documented as eSIM-only, while other regional variants may retain a tray.
Can I use a prepaid international eSIM while traveling?
Google suggests that a prepaid international eSIM can be activated on arrival to avoid roaming charges. This is general guidance rather than a guarantee of coverage, pricing or compatibility for a destination.
Before travel, check that the Pixel model is permitted on the destination network, that the carrier supports eSIM for visitors and that your phone can maintain the home line in the configuration you want. On arrival, add the travel profile through Settings > Network & internet > SIMs > Add SIM > Set up an eSIM or the carrier’s documented route. Keep your original line’s profile intact unless you deliberately intend to replace it.

Which activation method should I choose?
Choose the route that matches how the line is being provisioned. The table summarizes the decision without assuming that every carrier offers every method.
| Situation | Pixel path | Key prerequisites | If it fails |
|---|---|---|---|
| New line or skipped setup | Settings > Network & internet > SIMs > Add SIM > Set up an eSIM | Carrier eSIM support; IMEI or device ID may be required | Ask the carrier to activate or reissue the profile |
| Android phone to Pixel | During onboarding, or Add SIM > Transfer SIM from another device | Android 12+, current Google Play services and screen lock on both phones | Retry, then contact the carrier for activation |
| iPhone to Pixel | Carrier-specific transfer; documented pairing may use a QR scan | Supported carrier and an iPhone that remains on and paired | Request carrier-assisted activation or a new eSIM |
| Physical SIM conversion | SIM settings or carrier conversion flow | Pixel 7 or later, supported carrier and region | Keep the card until the replacement eSIM is tested |
What is the fastest reliable troubleshooting sequence?
Use this order so you do not erase a working line or confuse a disabled profile with a hardware problem.
- Open Settings > Network & internet > SIMs and identify whether the carrier profile is present.
- If present, select it and turn on Use SIM.
- If absent, confirm with the carrier that the eSIM was activated for this Pixel’s IMEI or device ID.
- If you were transferring service, retry under the documented Android or iPhone prerequisites.
- If a physical card is part of the setup, inspect its seating and condition; skip this step for an eSIM-only model.
- For two-line setups, enable the intended SIM and assign default services.
- Escalate persistent errors to the carrier and request activation or reissue.
This sequence follows Google’s SIM-status, transfer and activation guidance while keeping model and regional limitations visible.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a SIM-ejector tool to activate an eSIM?
No. eSIM activation is completed through Pixel settings and the carrier’s electronic activation flow. An ejector tool or small paperclip is relevant only when you need to inspect or remove a physical SIM tray.
What information should I have ready when contacting my carrier?
Have the Pixel model, country or region, IMEI or device ID, the line being activated and the exact error message. Also state whether this is a new activation, a transfer from Android or iPhone, or a physical-SIM conversion.
Does buying an unlocked Pixel guarantee eSIM support?
No. An unlocked device can still depend on carrier and regional eligibility. The carrier must confirm that its network supports eSIM for your exact Pixel variant and plan.
