You can run experiments on a real quantum processor without buying or operating one. Create an account with a managed service, build a small circuit in its browser tool or SDK, test it on a simulator, then submit the same circuit to a cloud QPU. For a first experiment, IBM Quantum Platform is the simplest browser-first route; Amazon Braket is the most hardware-vendor-agnostic; and Microsoft Azure Quantum suits people who already use Azure or want several providers in one workspace. Every route requires an account, uses a queue or reservation system, and returns noisy measurements rather than the ideal simulator result.

What does it mean to access a quantum computer in the cloud?

A cloud quantum service operates the hardware in a data center and exposes it through a web console, programming interface, or both. You send a circuit, the service compiles it for a selected device, runs it for a chosen number of shots, and returns measurement counts or expectation values. The processor remains remote; your computer only prepares the job and downloads the result.

Most services also provide simulators. A simulator executes the circuit on classical hardware, so it is useful for checking syntax, expected probabilities, and data handling before you consume QPU time. It does not reproduce every hardware effect, such as readout error, gate infidelity, crosstalk, drift, or queue delays.

A typical cloud experiment therefore has two runs: an ideal or noisy simulation and a hardware run. Keeping both results, along with the circuit source and job identifier, lets you tell whether an unexpected output comes from your algorithm or from the device.

How do I run a circuit with IBM Quantum Platform?

IBM provides the most direct visual workflow: draw a circuit in IBM Quantum Composer, inspect the simulated output, sign in, choose a backend, and submit it to hardware. For repeatable experiments, move to Qiskit and Qiskit Runtime after the browser trial.

Build and test a circuit in IBM Quantum Composer

  1. Open IBM Quantum Composer. Without signing in, you can view simulated visualizations for circuits of up to four qubits.
  2. Drag gates onto the circuit grid. A Bell-state test is a useful starting point: apply a Hadamard gate to qubit 0, apply a controlled-NOT from qubit 0 to qubit 1, then measure both qubits.
  3. Run the simulator and inspect the state or measurement visualization. Confirm that the circuit has the qubits, classical registers and measurements you intended.
  4. Create or sign in to an IBM Quantum account when you are ready for hardware. Hardware execution and larger visualizations require sign-in.
  5. Select an available IBM backend, set a modest shot count, and submit. The service places the job in a queue and reports its status and identifier.
  6. Save the Composer circuit. Export generated OpenQASM or Python if you will rerun it, compare backends, or share the experiment.

Composer is valuable for learning because the circuit, controls and visualization are visible at once. It is less suitable for parameter sweeps or automated data collection; those tasks belong in a script.

Submit programmatically with Qiskit and Qiskit Runtime

Install the Qiskit SDK and the qiskit-ibm-runtime package in the environment where you will run the experiment. Authenticate with an IBM Quantum account/API key or an IBM Cloud channel, depending on the account route you selected. Keep credentials outside notebooks and source control.

  1. Create the circuit in Python and add measurements for the observables or bit strings you need.
  2. Initialize the IBM service using your authenticated account and list the backends available to you.
  3. Choose a backend by qubit capacity, supported instructions, current status and queue—not by name alone. A device that is online may still be unsuitable for your circuit’s connectivity or gate set.
  4. Submit a Job, Session or Batch workload through Qiskit Runtime. A Job is appropriate for an individual circuit; Sessions and Batches group related work so the service can manage a larger experiment efficiently.
  5. Wait for completion, retrieve counts or observables, and store the raw result with the job identifier, backend name, shot count and timestamp.

The documented IBM Quantum Open plan allows up to 10 minutes of quantum time per month. That allowance is plan-specific and can change; Premium and IBM Cloud Standard provide paid alternatives. Check the current IBM access and plan terms before relying on the allowance for a course, demonstration or scheduled study.

How do I use Amazon Braket to reach different hardware types?

Amazon Braket is designed for portability: the same project can use simulators and devices from several vendors, although each target has its own instruction set, topology, noise and availability. You can work locally, in a managed notebook, or through the AWS console.

Choose a Braket working environment

  • Local SDK: install the Amazon Braket Python SDK in your own virtual environment and submit tasks from a script or notebook.
  • Local notebook or IDE: use the SDK interactively while retaining local control of files and dependencies.
  • Managed notebook: open a notebook from the AWS console when you want an AWS-managed environment and its associated permissions.

Braket also offers plugins for PennyLane, Qiskit and CUDA-Q. Use a plugin when your algorithm already uses one of those frameworks, but verify that the chosen target supports the operations and result format your code expects.

Submit a first Braket task

  1. Sign in to AWS and enable the IAM permissions required for Amazon Braket and the storage or logging services your notebook uses.
  2. Run your circuit on a local simulator first. Check measurement ordering, parameter values and the shape of the returned result before requesting a QPU.
  3. Select a supported target. Braket documents on-demand access to AQT, IonQ, IQM and Rigetti gate-based devices, as well as QuEra’s Analog Hamiltonian Simulator; the active list can change.
  4. Submit a task through the Braket SDK or console, specifying the device, circuit, shots and any target-specific options.
  5. Monitor the task until it completes, then download the counts or measurements and retain the task identifier with your source code.

Braket can also run hybrid jobs, in which classical code and quantum tasks are coordinated, and Braket Direct reservations for planned access. Those features are useful when an experiment needs repeated hardware calls or a reserved time window, but they introduce additional scheduling and billing decisions. Review the current device price and reservation information before enabling them.

How do I use Microsoft Azure Quantum?

Azure Quantum puts provider targets behind an Azure Quantum workspace. It is a practical choice if you already have Azure identity, subscription and cost controls, or if you want to manage several providers from one portal.

Create the account and workspace

  1. Sign in with an Azure account that has an active subscription.
  2. Create an Azure Quantum workspace in a region supported by the providers you intend to use.
  3. From the workspace, add the provider offers and plans available to your account and region. Provider availability, pricing and terms are not identical.
  4. Open the target list and note each target’s provider, supported operations, status and billing information.

Microsoft’s Quantum Development Kit (QDK) supports Q#, Qiskit, Cirq, OpenQASM and PennyLane workflows. You can work in the Azure portal, install the QDK Python package, use its Visual Studio Code extension, or submit through the Azure CLI.

Run and monitor an Azure job

  1. Execute the circuit on a simulator using the same framework and measurement convention you will use on hardware.
  2. Select a provider target in the workspace and submit the circuit with a shot count and any provider-specific options.
  3. Monitor the job in the portal or through the SDK/CLI. Azure jobs have a provider and target and move through states such as waiting and executing before a result is available.
  4. Download the output, record the job identifier and preserve the target, provider, workspace region and submission date.

Do not assume that a circuit accepted by one provider will be accepted unchanged by another. Transpilation, qubit numbering, measurement syntax and supported gates can differ even when the high-level QDK code is portable.

What is a repeatable cloud-quantum experiment workflow?

A small, documented workflow prevents most beginner mistakes and makes a hardware result worth comparing.

  1. Define the comparison question. Decide whether you are validating a circuit, studying noise, comparing devices, or measuring an algorithmic quantity. “Run it everywhere” is not a scientific question by itself.
  2. Pick the platform. Base the choice on interface, hardware technology, language/framework support, billing requirements and queue or reservation model.
  3. Create access. Register the account or workspace, enable permissions, install the SDK or open the browser tool, and verify that you can see at least one simulator.
  4. Start with a tiny circuit. A two-qubit Bell circuit exposes measurement ordering and entanglement without consuming much QPU time.
  5. Record the configuration. Save the circuit source, SDK and package versions, compiler or transpiler settings, backend or target, shot count and date.
  6. Run the simulator, then hardware. Use the simulator output as a baseline. Submit a modest hardware job and expect a queue, calibration effects and imperfect counts.
  7. Archive the result. Keep raw counts or observables, the job or task identifier, error messages and any plots. Repeat on another backend only when that comparison answers the question you defined in step one.

What should a first Bell-state experiment show?

The circuit applies a Hadamard gate to one qubit, entangles a second qubit with a controlled-NOT, and measures both. An ideal simulator produces the correlated outcomes 00 and 11 with roughly equal probability, while 01 and 10 should be absent apart from sampling or implementation details.

A real QPU normally returns some unwanted 01 and 10 counts. Their presence does not automatically mean the circuit is wrong: gate errors, readout errors, decoherence during the circuit and the device’s physical connectivity all contribute. Compare the distribution with the simulator, inspect the transpiled circuit if available, and rerun only after deciding whether you are measuring noise or debugging code.

Use enough shots to see a distribution rather than a single anecdotal result, but do not spend the entire access allowance on the first run. The appropriate count depends on the question, device and budget; consistency of the shot count matters more than an arbitrary universal number.

How should I compare IBM, Braket and Azure targets?

Compare the target, not merely the service name. The following checklist captures the differences that affect an experiment.

Comparison question Why it changes the experiment
What hardware technology and topology are offered? Connectivity determines how many routing operations the compiler must add; technology affects gate times, native operations and noise behavior.
Can I reach the target now? Online status does not guarantee a short queue. Calibration and maintenance can remove a device temporarily.
Which language and framework are supported? Qiskit, Cirq, Q#, OpenQASM, PennyLane and CUDA-Q differ in syntax, transpilation and result objects.
Is execution on demand, queued or reserved? On-demand jobs are convenient; reservations or hybrid workflows may be better for repeated runs but require planning and can cost more.
What simulator is available? Local simulators are fast for small circuits; managed or provider-specific simulators may model noise or larger workloads differently.
What does the result contain? Some workflows return bit-string counts, while others emphasize samples, state information or expectation values. Your analysis code must match.
Can the run be reproduced? Backend name, target version, compiler settings, shots, date and job identifier are essential because hardware calibration changes.

What does cloud quantum access cost, and what permissions are required?

There is no single price for “a cloud quantum computer.” Cost depends on the provider, target, execution mode, region, shots, simulator or QPU choice, storage, notebooks and reservations. IBM’s documented Open plan supplies up to 10 minutes of quantum time per month; paid IBM routes, AWS device tasks and Azure provider targets follow their own current terms.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For AWS, an account is required and Braket permissions must be enabled before a notebook or script can submit tasks. AWS may also charge for related storage or managed notebook resources. For Azure, an active subscription and workspace are prerequisites, and each provider plan can have separate billing. For IBM, authentication and the selected account channel determine which backends and plan terms apply.

Set budget alerts or spending limits where the platform supports them, test on a simulator first, and inspect the target’s billing page before increasing shots or enabling reservations. Never place API keys in a public notebook, repository or client-side web page.

What can go wrong when submitting a quantum job?

Symptom Likely cause What to check or change
The hardware target is missing Account, region, provider plan or permissions do not include it; the device may also be offline. Refresh the target list, verify the workspace or IBM channel, confirm permissions and check the provider’s live status.
The job stays waiting The device is queued, calibrating or handling other users’ work. Record the job identifier, check status, and do not submit many duplicate jobs while waiting.
The circuit is rejected The target does not support a gate, qubit count, measurement form or program format. Transpile for that target, reduce the circuit, or choose a backend with the required instruction set.
Simulator and QPU counts differ sharply Hardware noise, readout error, qubit mapping, transpilation or a measurement-order mismatch. Inspect the compiled circuit, confirm bit ordering, increase shots cautiously, and compare with a noise-aware simulation if available.
Authentication fails Expired key, wrong account channel, missing IAM role or an unselected Azure subscription. Create or refresh credentials, use environment variables or a secret store, and verify the account context used by the SDK.
The result cannot be reproduced Backend calibration, software versions or compiler settings changed. Archive source, package versions, target, date, shots, options and the raw result for every run.

How do I choose a route for a specific project?

Use IBM Quantum Composer when the priority is visual learning and direct access to IBM hardware. Move to Qiskit Runtime when you need scripted runs, grouped workloads or a saved experiment that another person can execute.

Use Amazon Braket when comparing superconducting, trapped-ion or neutral-atom approaches is part of the question, or when a project already uses PennyLane, Qiskit or CUDA-Q and benefits from several device families. Expect to manage AWS permissions and target-specific billing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use Azure Quantum when identity, subscriptions and resource governance already run in Azure, or when a single workspace for multiple provider targets simplifies a team project. Plan for regional and provider-specific availability rather than assuming every target is enabled automatically.

Whichever route you choose, the reliable pattern is the same: simulator first, small hardware job second, complete metadata throughout, and a comparison question specific enough that a second backend teaches you something.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I access a cloud QPU without owning a quantum computer?

Yes. The hardware is operated by the provider, while you submit circuits remotely through a browser, SDK or command-line tool. You still need the provider’s account, authentication and any required subscription or permissions.

Do I need a powerful laptop to run quantum experiments?

No for small circuits or cloud submission: your computer mainly builds the circuit and receives results. Large classical simulations can require substantial memory, so move those workloads to a managed simulator or reduce the circuit size.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why did my second run produce different counts from the first?

Sampling changes from run to run, and QPU calibration, queue timing and environmental conditions can change the error rates. Preserve both raw results and metadata before interpreting a difference as an algorithmic effect.

Can one Python program run unchanged on every provider?

High-level frameworks improve portability, but providers expose different native gates, qubit layouts, measurement conventions and result objects. Treat each target as a separate compilation and validation step even when the algorithm code is shared.
