To resin-print a miniature Benchy that still shows its rails, roof edge, cabin openings and smooth hull, start with the official high-resolution, watertight STL, scale it while watching the sliced preview, use 0.05 mm layers as a dependable baseline, and calibrate exposure for your exact resin, color, printer and vat. Tilt the hull so each layer has a manageable cross-section, put light supports on hidden or robust surfaces, and inspect for islands before printing. A 0.025 mm profile can preserve very shallow lettering and relief, but only after the printer and resin are calibrated; it increases print time and does not fix poor support placement.

Why is a miniature Benchy harder to print than a full-size one?

The Benchy is deliberately unforgiving. Its official design is a calibration model intended to expose surface-finish, dimensional-accuracy and warping problems, not merely a decorative boat. The high-resolution STL contains 225,154 triangles and deviates by no more than 0.001 mm from the original CAD, so the file itself is detailed enough for resin printing. At the official 1:1 size it is 60.00 mm from bow to stern and has a typical volume of 15.55 cm³.

Scaling reduces every wall, rail, window and roof edge proportionally. A feature that is robust at 60 mm can become thinner than one or two cured pixels, or disappear when anti-aliasing and support clearance are applied. The hull is also a large, smooth, curved overhang. As the official feature description notes, that surface is challenging to print; at miniature scale, a poorly oriented hull can produce suction, peel failures and visible support scars across the most noticeable area.

Fine detail is therefore a system problem. Layer height, exposure, pixel size, resin viscosity, lift settings, orientation, support tips, washing and curing all interact. Changing only one number rarely rescues a miniature whose supports are attached to the bow or whose exposure has closed the cabin openings.

Which Benchy file and scale should I use?

Download the official high-resolution, watertight STL from the 3DBenchy project rather than a remeshed copy. The official model is the known calibration geometry; a low-resolution or damaged mesh can add faceting and holes before the slicer has a chance to process it.

Choose a scale from the features you need to inspect

The 1:1 model is 60.00 mm long. The lengths below are simple scale results, not alternate official designs:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Scale Approximate length What to expect
100% 60 mm Most forgiving for thin walls and supports; useful as a reference print.
75% 45 mm Good compromise when a smaller display model is wanted without making every feature fragile.
50% 30 mm Rails, roof edges and window openings become substantially less tolerant of exposure and support errors.
25% 15 mm Extreme miniature territory; expect some features to merge or vanish unless the printer, resin and supports are exceptionally well tuned.

In your slicer, set uniform X, Y and Z scaling so the hull is not distorted. Before adding supports, scrub through the layer preview at the intended scale. Look specifically for the bow rail, stern rail, cabin openings, roof lip, deck edge and any lettering. If a feature appears for only a few pixels or disappears for several consecutive layers, the printed result cannot reproduce it reliably. Increase the scale, choose a resin formulated for detail, or accept that the feature will be absent rather than trying to compensate with excessive exposure.

Keep a reference model when comparing settings

Because the Benchy is a calibration object, printing one at a known scale gives you a baseline for later miniatures. Record the printer, resin name and color, layer height, normal and bottom exposure, lift settings, orientation and support style. The 15.55 cm³ volume figure applies to a typical 1:1 model; a scaled model consumes less resin according to the cube of its scale, but hollowing, supports and rafts add material that the slicer must calculate.

What layer height should I use for a small resin Benchy?

Begin at 0.05 mm (50 micrometres) for a reliable balance of detail, print time and exposure tolerance. Try 0.025 mm only when the miniature contains shallow relief or lettering that survives the preview and your printer-resin combination is already calibrated. Halving layer height increases the number of layers and therefore the print time; it does not automatically improve XY detail, which is governed primarily by the printer’s pixel size and optical calibration.

Layer height Appropriate use Trade-off
0.05 mm Default starting point for most miniature Benchy tests. Shorter print than 0.025 mm and generally easier to expose consistently.
0.025 mm Very shallow lettering, roof relief or a demanding display miniature after calibration. Roughly twice as many layers as 0.05 mm, with longer exposure-related print time and no guarantee that XY-sized features will appear.

Do not copy a layer height from a different printer and assume the same exposure works. A mono LCD printer, an RGB-mask printer and different resin colors transmit different amounts of light. Resin age, temperature, pigment settling and a cloudy or damaged vat film also change the result.

How do I set and calibrate exposure for the exact resin?

Use the resin manufacturer’s profile as a starting point, then validate it with an exposure test before committing to the Benchy. Published 405 nm resin examples at 0.05 mm layers include roughly 2.0–3.6 seconds of normal exposure, but that range spans different printers and formulations; it is not a universal Benchy setting. Bottom exposure is likewise profile-specific. Examples commonly use five or six bottom layers with approximately 20–50 seconds of bottom exposure.

  1. Confirm the hardware profile. Select the exact printer model, screen type and nominal layer height in Lychee, CHITUBOX or your slicer. Verify that the resin is intended for the printer’s wavelength, usually 405 nm for current desktop MSLA machines.
  2. Read the resin technical sheet. Note the manufacturer’s normal exposure, bottom exposure, bottom-layer count, lift distance and recommended temperature. Treat these as starting values, not guarantees.
  3. Print an exposure test. Use a calibrated exposure-test model at the same layer height and resin temperature you will use for the Benchy. Change only normal exposure between test tiles so the result is interpretable.
  4. Inspect positive and negative detail. Choose the shortest exposure that produces solid walls and complete fine lines without closing holes, merging text or creating swollen edges. Underexposure causes weak rails, missing layers and easy breakage; overexposure closes the cabin and softens dimensional accuracy.
  5. Check adhesion separately. If the test has correct detail but the raft or first layers fail, adjust bottom exposure, bottom-layer count, plate leveling and lift behavior rather than overexposing every layer.
  6. Lock the profile and print a small Benchy. Save the exact resin color and vat condition in the profile name. A change from clear to opaque resin, a new bottle or a replacement vat film warrants another short validation.

Exposure calibration is more valuable than chasing a number copied from a forum. Even within one printer family, manufacturer profiles show different normal and bottom exposures for different resins and models. Keep the test result with the slicer profile so a successful miniature can be reproduced.

How should I orient a miniature Benchy?

Orient the boat to control cross-sectional area and suction, not simply to make the deck horizontal. A slight tilt means the hull, deck and cabin enter the resin gradually instead of appearing as a large simultaneous cross-section. The exact angle depends on the printer, but the objective is consistent: avoid presenting the entire curved hull or deck to the release film at once.

Use a practical orientation sequence

  1. Start with a modest tilt. Rotate the Benchy so the keel and hull curve build progressively. Keep the boat’s long axis from being perfectly parallel to the vat film if that creates a broad first contact.
  2. Protect visible surfaces. Aim the bow, outer hull, rails and roof edge away from support tips. Put supports under the keel, stern underside or other areas that are hidden in normal viewing.
  3. Watch the cabin and deck. Ensure openings are not oriented as sealed cups that trap resin. A tilt that helps the hull can still create a large horizontal roof edge, so inspect the preview rather than trusting the angle alone.
  4. Check the first contact. The earliest islands should be attached to the raft or a support network. If a small rail or corner appears by itself, add a light support or change the orientation.
  5. Review the cross-section graph or layer area. Sudden jumps in exposed area indicate a high peel load. A smoother progression usually reduces suction and layer separation.

There is no single correct angle for every miniature. A tiny model may need a different tilt from a 60 mm reference because its support tips occupy a larger fraction of each wall. Printability and cosmetic quality are competing goals: an orientation that minimizes supports can increase cross-sectional stress, while an orientation that lowers stress can put more scars on the visible hull.

Where should supports go in Lychee or CHITUBOX?

Resin miniatures generally require supports. Use light supports for the first contact and fine details, medium supports where a thin wall or roof would otherwise peel, and a few stronger supports to anchor the model to the raft. The exact count is model- and slicer-dependent; a higher count is not automatically safer because every tip can leave a mark or tear a fragile wall during removal.

Support placement that preserves detail

  • Raft and anchor points: Build a stable raft and connect the lowest part of the keel or stern underside to it. Avoid relying on a single narrow column for the boat’s entire weight.
  • Hull underside: Distribute light supports along hidden underside curves. Keep tips away from the smooth outer hull that will be photographed or painted.
  • Bow and stern: Reinforce corners where a thin wall changes direction, but place tips on the underside or inside an opening rather than on the bow’s visible face.
  • Cabin and roof: Add supports beneath the roof edge and around broad overhangs. Use fewer, strategically placed tips on the top surface to avoid a dotted scar pattern.
  • Rails and thin posts: Support the attachment points or underside, not the narrowest decorative span. A tip placed directly on a rail can snap it during removal.
  • Islands: Every isolated island must either connect to an earlier layer or receive a support. Use the slicer’s island detector and step through the first layer where each island appears.

Fine-tune support tips

Use the smallest tip diameter that remains reliable for your calibrated resin and lift settings. If a support tears out, enlarge the contact or add a nearby brace rather than covering the model in heavy tips. Keep support shafts clear of cabin openings so they do not become trapped inside the boat. In both Lychee and CHITUBOX, switch between 3D and layer-preview views; a support that looks connected in the 3D viewport can still miss an island by a fraction of a millimetre.

What should I check in the sliced preview before printing?

A complete preview is the final quality gate. Do not start a long print until the following checks pass:

  • The model is the intended scale and remains watertight after slicing.
  • No rail, roof edge, cabin opening or lettering disappears unexpectedly.
  • Every island has a support or grows from an existing supported region.
  • The hull’s exposed area increases gradually rather than jumping to a broad plate.
  • Support tips do not touch the most visible outer hull, bow face or roof top unless there is no alternative.
  • The raft is fully on the build plate and does not collide with the vat or screen limits.
  • Drainage and resin flow are plausible for any enclosed cavity; trapped resin can add weight and remain uncured.
  • The estimated print time and resin volume are acceptable for the selected scale and support density.

Scrub slowly through the first layers, the keel, the deck transition, the cabin, the roof and the rails. These are the locations where a single missing support or merged opening is easiest to catch before wasting a print.

How do I wash, dry and cure the miniature without breaking it?

Follow the technical sheet for the specific resin for washing solvent, wash duration, drying and final curing. Manufacturer instructions differ, and the available profiles do not establish one universal wash or cure time. A miniature Benchy has narrow rails and enclosed corners that can retain uncured resin, so thorough but gentle cleaning matters more than applying a generic timer.

  1. Drain first. Let excess resin drip back into the vat or a waste container before washing. Do not pour resin or contaminated solvent into a drain.
  2. Wash according to the resin sheet. Agitate gently or use the manufacturer’s recommended wash process. Avoid bending rails while the resin is still soft.
  3. Dry completely. Blow or air-dry the model and inspect cabin openings, the underside and the hull curve for liquid pockets. Residual solvent can affect the surface during curing.
  4. Remove supports at the recommended stage. Some resins are easier to trim after a short initial cure; others are safer to support-remove while freshly washed. Use the resin maker’s instruction, and cut supports rather than twisting fragile rails.
  5. Cure evenly. Use the specified wavelength, time and orientation for the resin. Rotate the boat so the hull, cabin and underside receive comparable exposure, checking periodically to avoid excessive brittleness or warping.
  6. Inspect under magnification. Check the bow, rails, cabin openings, roof edge and hull curve. Remove remaining nubs with a fine tool only after the part is fully stable.

Wear the protective equipment specified for uncured resin, keep the work area ventilated and treat wash liquid, wipes and failed prints as resin-contaminated waste according to local rules.

How can I tell whether one miniature print is better than another?

Compare prints using the Benchy’s calibration purpose rather than judging only overall appearance. Keep resin, scale and orientation constant when testing one variable at a time.

Comparison axis What to inspect What a problem suggests
Fine-feature retention Rails, posts, roof lip, lettering and cabin openings. Scale too small, XY resolution limit, overexposure or missing supports.
Support scars Visible dots or tears on the bow, outer hull and roof. Tips placed on cosmetic surfaces, tips too large or supports removed aggressively.
Dimensional accuracy Overall length, wall spacing and opening size against the CAD dimensions. Exposure compensation, resin shrinkage, scale error or warped layers.
Hull smoothness Continuous curve from bow to stern with no stair-step bands or ripples. Layer height, orientation, peel stress or insufficient support.
Warping Keel, deck and roof alignment after curing. Uneven curing, excessive cross-sectional area, weak supports or aggressive post-cure.
Failure rate Missing layers, detached rafts, partial hulls or broken rails across repeated prints. Exposure, leveling, temperature, lift settings or support design.
Print time Total layer count and lift cycles. Very fine layers improve vertical resolution but lengthen the job.
Resin consumption Model, raft and support volume in the slicer estimate. Dense supports or unnecessary solid sections; verify before starting.

What are the most common miniature Benchy failures and fixes?

Rails or cabin openings disappear

First confirm that the feature survives the sliced preview. If it vanishes there, increase the scale or redesign expectations; no exposure adjustment can print geometry that is not present in the sliced layers. If it is present but merged, reduce exposure in small increments after repeating the exposure test, and check that anti-aliasing or blur settings are not closing narrow gaps.

The hull peels from supports

Look for a sudden large cross-section, insufficient underside supports or inadequate bottom adhesion. Reorient the boat for a more gradual area increase, reinforce the keel and stern underside, and verify leveling and bottom exposure. Do not simply raise normal exposure, because that can damage fine detail while leaving the peel geometry unchanged.

Support marks cover the visible hull

Rebuild the support layout with light tips on hidden surfaces and stronger anchors underneath. A small orientation change can move dozens of tips away from the outer curve. Remove supports carefully, following the resin’s recommended handling stage, and reserve sanding for robust areas.

The print is brittle or warped after curing

Overexposure, excessive post-curing, resin temperature or trapped liquid can contribute. Confirm the resin sheet’s cure guidance, dry the model thoroughly and cure evenly rather than leaving one face directly under the lamp. Compare a shorter validated cure with the manufacturer’s recommendation before changing the print geometry.

Layers are missing even though exposure is correct

Inspect the vat film, LCD surface, resin mixing and temperature. A contaminated or damaged film, settled pigment, cold resin or a loose build plate can interrupt otherwise valid exposure settings. Re-level the plate, filter or mix resin as directed by the manufacturer, and run the exposure test again if the vat or resin batch changed.

Can I hollow a miniature Benchy to save resin?

Hollowing can reduce material, but it introduces drainage, wall-thickness and suction decisions that are especially risky at miniature scale. A tiny hollow shell may leave walls too thin, trap uncured resin in the cabin or create a large enclosed suction cup. If you hollow the model, add adequately sized drain openings in hidden locations, verify that the slicer shows an open internal cavity, and inspect every layer for trapped islands. For very small Benchies, a solid, well-supported print is often easier to clean and more predictable than an aggressively hollow one.

Can I print a miniature Benchy without supports?

Usually not reliably in resin. The hull, deck edges, cabin roof and rails create overhangs and islands that need controlled attachment. A carefully chosen orientation may reduce the number of supports, but eliminating them entirely risks detached layers, scars from emergency repairs and incomplete features. If you test a support-light arrangement, inspect every island in the slicer and keep a supported reference profile for comparison.

Is water-washable resin automatically better for tiny detail?

No. “Water-washable” describes the cleaning process, not a guarantee of higher resolution, lower shrinkage or better rail strength. Choose a resin whose technical sheet provides suitable exposure guidance and mechanical behavior for your printer, then calibrate it exactly as you would an alcohol-washed formulation. Regardless of wash type, uncured residue must be collected and disposed of responsibly rather than sent into household plumbing.

How many miniature Benchies fit on one build plate?

The number depends on the printer’s usable area, selected scale, raft spacing, support footprint and whether the models are tilted. Use the slicer’s arrangement and collision checks instead of a fixed count. Leave enough separation for supports, resin flow and safe removal; packing models tightly can transfer a failed raft or make support removal damage adjacent boats.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is the fastest way to improve a failed miniature?

Identify whether the failure is geometric, exposure-related or support-related before changing settings. If a feature is absent in the preview, change scale or geometry; if detail is merged, repeat exposure calibration; if layers detach, address orientation, supports and adhesion. Change one variable per test and record the result, so the next Benchy teaches you which adjustment actually worked.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the smallest practical Benchy size for a desktop resin printer?

There is no universal minimum because pixel size, resin behavior and feature shape differ by printer. Use the sliced preview as the limit: if rails, openings or lettering disappear for whole layers, increase the scale rather than relying on exposure changes.

Should I use anti-aliasing when printing a tiny Benchy?

Anti-aliasing can smooth stair steps, but excessive blur may soften or close narrow openings. Keep it at the slicer’s conservative default while calibrating exposure, then compare a controlled test if you change the setting.

Why does my miniature Benchy look better before curing?

Freshly washed resin can appear glossier and slightly softer than the final part. Curing changes color, surface sheen and stiffness, so judge dimensional accuracy and warping only after the resin has completed the specified cure.

Can I reuse the same support layout at a different scale?

No. Scaling changes the load on each wall and moves islands relative to the support tips. Recheck the first-contact layers, hull underside and rails after every significant scale change, even when the orientation is unchanged.
