Apple says its annual revenue rose from $108 billion in fiscal 2011 to more than $416 billion in fiscal 2025, while its market capitalization increased from approximately $350 billion to $4 trillion over the stated period. Those figures show the scale of Apple’s growth during Cook’s leadership, but they do not measure how much of it he personally caused.
Cook’s path to Apple’s top job
Apple named Cook CEO in August 2011, after he had served as the company’s chief operating officer. As COO, he was responsible for worldwide sales and operations, including Apple’s supply chain, sales activities, and service and support across markets, according to Apple’s leadership profile. That background put him in charge of core operations before he took the top role; it does not by itself explain Apple’s subsequent financial or market-value performance.

What Apple’s growth figures measure
In its April 2026 succession announcement, Apple compared approximately $350 billion in market capitalization with $4 trillion under Cook’s leadership, and reported yearly revenue rising from $108 billion in fiscal 2011 to more than $416 billion in fiscal 2025. The company’s fiscal 2025 proxy materials give the more precise results: $416.2 billion in net sales and $133.1 billion in operating income. Those are results for that fiscal year, not a current run rate.

The $108 billion and more than $416 billion figures are Apple’s comparison of fiscal 2011 and fiscal 2025 revenue.
- Operating income: Apple reported $133.1 billion for fiscal 2025. It is a separate measure from sales, reflecting operating results rather than total revenue.
- Market capitalization: This is the market value of a company’s outstanding shares at a point in time. It changes with the share price and is not revenue or cash earned by Apple.
The figures are company-reported comparisons over Cook’s leadership period. They establish the scale of Apple’s expansion, not a counterfactual showing what the company would have been worth under a different CEO.

Why the end date changes the headline numbers
Apple’s 2025 proxy statement used an earlier cutoff: from Cook’s 2011 promotion through the end of 2024, it reported more than $3 trillion in market-capitalization growth and approximately 1,908% cumulative total shareholder return. The company’s 2026 succession announcement extends its market-capitalization comparison to $4 trillion. These are different endpoints and different measures, so the 2024 shareholder-return figure should not be combined with the later market-capitalization snapshot.

Cook’s tenure and Apple’s transition
Apple announced in April 2026 that Cook would become executive chairman and John Ternus CEO on September 1, 2026. The change marks the end of Cook’s CEO tenure, rather than the end of his association with Apple. The company’s leadership profile and succession announcement establish his operational background, tenure, and the scale of reported business growth; they do not isolate his individual contribution from the work of employees, other leaders, market conditions, or other factors.
