Building an editor plugin is less about reusing one feature than adapting it to the rules of each host. In Eugeniya Ivanova’s account of integrations for Obsidian, VS Code and Figma, the Figma version made that trade-off clearest: a small core file still depended on separate execution contexts, data handoffs, network handling and submission requirements.
Her Aug. 26, 2026 essay is a first-person implementation account, not an independent comparison or benchmark. It offers a useful case study in a practical product choice: bring a feature into the app where people already work, or move them to a browser workflow. Read Ivanova’s full account on DEV Community.

What changes when the same feature enters a different editor?
Ivanova says she built integrations for Obsidian, VS Code and Figma, and chose Figma for the detailed walkthrough because it was the strictest host of the three in her experience. The shared user task was straightforward: select a design frame, add a caption, choose social accounts and publish without exporting an image and opening another app.
Recommended Free Tools
The central engineering lesson is that the user-facing task may remain constant while the host environment changes. Each editor has its own runtime and APIs, boundaries around network access and data, and expectations for distribution. Ivanova describes rewriting the task for each sandbox rather than carrying one implementation unchanged between apps.

- Pre-Mapped DAW Integration - Get producing in under 15 minutes with Ableton Live Lite 12, Logic Pro, FL Studio and more; comes with an expanded DAW-mapped transport section for uninterrupted workflow
That contrast is experiential. The essay does not quantify maintenance costs or experimentally compare the editors, and it gives far more implementation detail for Figma than for VS Code.
How did the Figma publishing flow work?
Ivanova says the main plugin file was 120 lines, but that count did not capture the surrounding work needed to make publishing function inside Figma. Her described sequence combined selection validation, image export, an upload process and composer rules.
Validate the selection and prepare the image
When the selection changed, the plugin checked that exactly one exportable node was selected. It generated a smaller export for preview and a 2× PNG for publishing. Ivanova’s stated reason for the larger export was that social networks recompress uploads and small design text can become soft in feeds; that is her rationale, not a universal guarantee about image quality.

Upload through multiple API steps
Figma supplied PNG data as a Uint8Array, rather than as a file ready to send in one request. Ivanova describes creating a post, receiving a temporary upload URL, uploading the PNG with a PUT request, completing the media step and then updating the post. In her account, the post remained a draft until its media had been uploaded.
This sequence is a reminder that an apparently simple “publish” button can coordinate several operations. The image bytes, temporary URL and post state each have to reach the right step in the correct order.
Why did Figma require extra context and network handling?
Ivanova describes Figma’s document context and UI context as separate. The document side read the design and exported the selection; network work happened in the UI. To cross that boundary, she converted the image bytes to an ordinary array for postMessage, then reconstructed a Uint8Array in the UI.

The UI ran in a sandboxed iframe. Ivanova says requests from it carried Origin: null, which created a CORS problem for her integration. She addressed it with a small Cloudflare Worker that forwarded requests and added CORS headers. She also says the Publora key stayed in figma.clientStorage and was passed through to Publora. These details describe her implementation, not a general recommendation or a complete account of current Figma security policy.
What did each editor require, according to the account?
| Editor | What Ivanova describes | What the account does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Figma | Separate document and UI contexts; exported bytes passed through postMessage; an iframe request issue she addressed with a Cloudflare Worker; manifest domain entries and plugin submission requirements. |
Whether the plugin was later approved or what its current listing status is. |
| Obsidian | She used Obsidian’s requestUrl for network calls because plain fetch encountered engine limits on mobile. |
How that behavior applies to every Obsidian version, device or plugin. |
| VS Code | She says it has its own ways of handling integration work. | Comparable implementation details, APIs, permission constraints or measured effort. |
The comparison is useful precisely when kept narrow: it shows that host-specific boundaries can shape an integration, but it is not a platform-wide audit. In particular, the essay does not support filling in the missing VS Code details by inference.
How did the composer account for publishing destinations?
The composer applied rules across the selected social accounts. Ivanova says it used the strictest selected network’s caption limit and enforced a media requirement when any selected network required media. Those were the rules implemented for her integration at the time she wrote; they should not be treated as a current specification for every social platform.

This is another host-independent part of the feature that still requires careful product logic: a single caption and attachment have to satisfy all chosen destinations, not just one.

Ivanova says the plugin manifest enumerated network domains rather than using a wildcard. She also says the Figma Community description disclosed the Publora account requirement, free plan, local key storage, privacy policy and support contact. These are reported choices in her plugin, not a complete statement of Figma’s current submission rules.

When should a team build inside an editor?
The case points to a product decision, not a universal rule. An in-editor integration can keep users near the material they are working on; a browser flow can avoid some host-specific integration work but asks users to leave their current app. Ivanova captures the choice as whether to “climb in there with them” or pull them out to a browser.
- Favor an in-editor experience when the task depends on material already present in the editor and the convenience of acting in context justifies adapting to that editor’s runtime, boundaries and distribution process.
- Favor a browser workflow when moving the user is acceptable and the cost or constraints of supporting multiple editor environments outweigh the benefit of staying in context.
- For multiple hosts, separate the shared user task from each host-specific adapter. The Figma account shows why a common “publish” concept does not eliminate differences in selection, byte transfer, network access or submission.
Ivanova’s implementation account is a concrete illustration of the hidden work around a small feature. It supports a careful conclusion: editor plugins are built within someone else’s environment, and the cost of entering that environment varies by host. It does not establish a universal ranking of editors or a measured cost comparison.
