A speech brain-computer interface (BCI) turns neural signals into text by learning how a particular person’s brain activity corresponds to speech-related movements or sounds. A decoder predicts those speech units, a language model helps assemble them into words, and software displays or speaks the result. The strongest current demonstrations are experimental systems, usually using implanted electrodes and individualized training—not devices that freely read a person’s thoughts.

How does a brain-computer interface turn neural signals into words?

A speech BCI is a signal-processing and prediction system. It records activity from brain regions involved in planning or controlling speech, then maps patterns in that activity to the speech a participant intends to produce. The result might be displayed as text, spoken by a synthetic voice, or rendered through another output such as an animated face.

The decoder does not usually identify a complete sentence in one neural snapshot. Speech unfolds over time, so the system processes changing signals and predicts intermediate units—such as phonemes, articulatory features, acoustic units, or learned speech representations—before assembling them into a sequence of words. A language model can help choose a plausible sequence when the neural evidence is noisy or ambiguous. It improves the interpretation; it does not make the device a universal thought translator.

From neural activity to a displayed sentence

  1. Record activity. Electrodes measure signals from speech-related brain areas. Research systems have used microelectrode arrays placed in the cortex or high-density electrodes on its surface.
  2. Give the system an intentional speech task. Depending on the study, a participant may attempt to speak, silently articulate, imagine speaking, or complete a controlled inner-speech task. During training, the system receives paired examples of the neural activity and the intended words or speech sounds.
  3. Extract changing signal features. Processing turns the recordings into features that preserve information about speech timing, movement, and sound categories. Speech-related information is distributed across neural populations rather than residing in a single “word neuron.”
  4. Predict speech units. A decoder estimates the intermediate units represented by the signal. Those predictions are more useful for continuous speech than treating each moment as an isolated word.
  5. Assemble and render the output. A sequence model combines predictions into words. Software can then show the text, synthesize speech, generate a personalized voice, or support another output mode.

This is a trained mapping for an individual and a task. The examples used to train a decoder give it a basis for interpreting that person’s signals; performance cannot be assumed to transfer unchanged to another person, another task, or every future session.

What does the participant have to do?

“Speech BCI” can describe different tasks, and the task matters when judging what a system can do. Many prominent demonstrations involve attempted speech: the participant intends to speak and engages speech-related movement planning, even if paralysis or another condition prevents intelligible audible speech. Other systems study silent articulation or imagined speech, and a narrower line of work examines inner speech.

Attempted speech

In attempted speech, the person tries to produce words. A BCI can use activity associated with planning or controlling the lips, tongue, jaw, larynx, and other speech articulators, even where the intended utterance does not emerge as intelligible speech. This is not the same as recording ordinary speech from the air: the output is inferred from neural activity.

Silent articulation and imagined speech

Silent articulation involves forming speech movements without audible output. Imagined speech refers to rehearsing or imagining speech without necessarily moving the articulators in the same way. The exact task and its training procedure vary among studies; a result from one task should not automatically be described as performance on another.

Inner speech

Inner speech means words represented privately in the mind without necessarily producing an audible utterance. Recent implanted research has decoded inner-speech-related activity in controlled tasks, and single-neuron research has identified representations of internal speech in the human supramarginal gyrus. These findings make inner speech an important research direction, but they do not establish that a device can passively read whatever a person thinks.

That distinction matters for privacy and control. A communication device needs to distinguish a deliberate attempt to communicate from irrelevant or private cognition. A trained, controlled inner-speech task is evidence about that task—not evidence of unrestricted access to a person’s mental life.

How accurate and fast are speech BCIs?

Published demonstrations have reached useful communication rates, but no single accuracy figure describes the field. Word error rate, accuracy, vocabulary size, task, participant, training, and output method all affect what a reported number means. The figures below belong to specific research demonstrations and should not be treated as a head-to-head ranking.

Research demonstration Recording and output Reported result Important context
Willett and colleagues, 2023 Intracortical brain-to-text 62 words per minute; 9.1% word error rate on a 50-word vocabulary; 23.8% word error rate on a 125,000-word vocabulary One participant with ALS who could no longer speak intelligibly; implanted research demonstration.
Metzger and colleagues, 2023 High-density cortical-surface recordings; text, synthesized speech, and facial-avatar control Median 78 words per minute and median 25% word error rate for text One multimodal interface; the reported text figures do not describe every output mode.
Card and colleagues, 2024 Speech neuroprosthesis 97.5% accuracy after additional training; approximately 32 words per minute in self-paced conversation Used for more than 248 cumulative hours over 8.4 months.
Littlejohn and colleagues, 2025 Continuously streaming brain-to-voice system Decoded in 80-millisecond increments Designed to continue decoding without explicit start-and-stop commands; this figure is a decoding interval, not words per minute.
Wairagkar and colleagues, 2025 Implanted brain-to-voice system 256 implanted microelectrodes; real-time synthesis of a participant’s voice, including intonation and short melodies Illustrates expressive voice output, not a text-decoding accuracy result.

Word error rate and accuracy are not interchangeable labels. Word error rate tracks word-level substitutions, deletions, and insertions relative to a reference; a lower value indicates fewer such errors. A vocabulary constraint can also change the problem: a small fixed set of possible words is different from selecting sentences from a 125,000-word vocabulary. Always keep the metric and vocabulary attached to a headline number.

Speed is not the whole experience either. A system that can decode continuously may reduce the wait for a complete sentence, while individualized calibration, correction, and sustained operation affect whether a person can use it in conversation. The reported 2024 use over 8.4 months is notable for duration, but it does not by itself establish how every person or system would perform across days.

Do speech BCIs require brain implants?

The highest-performing speech-to-text demonstrations described here use implanted electrodes: intracortical arrays or electrodes placed on the cortical surface. They provide recordings from speech-related activity at a level of access that has supported these research results, but implantation requires neurosurgery and the systems remain experimental medical neuroprostheses rather than ordinary consumer products.

“Implanted” covers different recording approaches. Intracortical arrays record from within the cortex, while cortical-surface electrodes record from its surface. They are not identical devices, and a result from one recording method should not be presented as proof that another method will achieve the same performance.

Non-invasive fMRI research has reconstructed aspects of the meaning of perceived or imagined language. That is better described as semantic reconstruction research than as a practical, low-latency communication prosthesis: fMRI is slow and equipment-intensive, and its task differs from real-time speech output. These findings should not be conflated with implanted speech BCIs that decode intended communication.

Can a speech BCI give someone who is paralyzed a way to communicate?

Research demonstrations show that neural signals can support communication for some participants who cannot produce intelligible speech, including a participant with ALS in the intracortical study. A BCI may turn intended speech into text or voice, but the published demonstrations do not establish that every person with paralysis can use one or that it is currently available as routine clinical care.

For someone considering communication support now, distinguish a neural-signal BCI from established augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) approaches or speech-generating technology. Those can provide communication without decoding neural signals. The relevant choice depends on the person’s abilities, needs, and clinical support; the BCI studies described here are not a basis for delaying a conversation with a qualified care team about available options.

What should you compare when reading about speech BCIs?

Compare the full setup, not just its best-looking number. A fair reading asks what signal was recorded, what the participant was asked to do, what counted as an error, how quickly output appeared, and how much training or continued use the result required.

  • Recording method: intracortical electrodes, cortical-surface electrodes, fMRI, or another signal source.
  • Invasiveness and setting: whether surgery is involved, whether the work is in clinical research, and what portability or maintenance demands are established.
  • Task: attempted speech, silent articulation, imagined speech, or controlled inner speech.
  • Vocabulary and metric: a fixed word set or large-vocabulary sentences; word error rate or accuracy.
  • Speed and latency: words per minute, the size of each decoding increment, and whether the system streams or waits for a complete phrase.
  • Calibration and durability: the training required, whether additional training changes the result, and how long or how often the system has been used.
  • Output: text, synthetic voice, personalized voice, avatar control, or multiple modes.
  • User control and privacy: how intended communication is separated from unrelated neural activity and how the interface handles unintended activations.

These questions prevent misleading comparisons. For instance, a median word rate from a cortical-surface multimodal system and a word error rate from an intracortical text system describe different attributes, not a single contest. Likewise, an 80-millisecond decoding increment describes how often a streaming system processes output, not how many words a person can communicate per minute.

Is a speech BCI mind reading?

No, not in the ordinary sense of freely reading thoughts. A speech BCI learns a user-specific relationship between neural activity and a defined communication task. In the strongest current demonstrations, it decodes attempted, silently articulated, imagined, or controlled inner speech—not unrestricted thoughts, memories, opinions, or every word passing through someone’s mind.

The distinction is especially important as researchers study inner speech. A system designed to help someone communicate needs a way for the user to initiate or control output, and privacy protections matter because neural signals can contain information beyond the intended message. The demonstrations establish promising, task-bound decoding; they do not establish a general-purpose mind-reading capability.

What is the current state of speech BCI technology?

Speech BCIs have moved beyond proof that neural activity can carry speech information: research systems have produced text at useful rates, supported synthesized or personalized voice, and begun to stream output continuously. The field is also studying how to make systems expressive and usable for longer periods, rather than optimizing only one accuracy result.

The remaining gap is substantial. The most impressive results generally involve one participant at a time, implanted electrodes, individual calibration, and controlled research conditions. Error rates, training needs, surgical burden, and the challenge of robust user control limit general availability. These systems are promising experimental neuroprostheses, not consumer devices that decode thoughts on demand.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a speech BCI use a voice that sounds like the person?

Some research systems have synthesized a participant’s voice in real time and captured changes in intonation. That is a research capability, not evidence that every speech BCI can reproduce a person’s former voice.

Does a streaming BCI wait until a sentence is finished?

Not necessarily. A 2025 system reported decoding in 80-millisecond increments and continued output without explicit start-and-stop commands, though that interval alone does not specify the full conversational delay.

Can non-invasive brain scans already provide instant speech-to-text?

The non-invasive fMRI work described here reconstructs aspects of language meaning, but it is slow and equipment-intensive. It is not established as a practical low-latency communication prosthesis.

Are brain-to-text BCIs available to buy for home use?

The demonstrations discussed are experimental medical neuroprostheses, not ordinary consumer products. The evidence here does not establish routine commercial availability or an at-home product for decoding neural signals into text.
