SideQuest AI is an outdoor quest game designed to get your eyes off a phone. You choose a time limit, setting, and play style; its local AI generates exactly three real-world objectives; you read the receipt-style quest, put the screen away, complete it, and return with a photo for a completion check. The current version is a browser prototype, while the intended product is a small offline-first device with buttons and a thermal receipt printer. That distinction matters: SideQuest demonstrates a screen-light interaction model today, but the dedicated hardware is still a future form rather than a shipping product.
What is SideQuest AI?
SideQuest AI is a developer-built system for turning a short walk or outdoor break into a guided mini-adventure. Instead of keeping a feed, map, timer, or chat interface open, it gives you one mission to take into the real world. The project’s design motto is, “Take the receipt. Leave the screen. Touch grass.” Aleksandra Fedak, the project author, describes the ideal session as one in which you spend almost no time using SideQuest.

In the browser implementation, you configure a quest, read the generated instructions, leave the device, and come back for progress feedback. The related SIDEQUEST project description calls this an offline-first AI quest-machine prototype: the browser version simulates the future hardware while the author tests generation and gameplay.
It is therefore best understood as an interaction experiment and working prototype, not as evidence of a commercially available gadget or a clinically tested behavior-change program. No independent adoption statistics, user study, market-size estimate, or externally validated efficacy result has been published for the project.

How does the screenless AI quest work?
The core loop has a deliberate handoff: the screen creates the plan, but the activity happens away from it. A documented matching implementation uses one mission and asks you to put the phone away while completing it; a single return photo is then used for an honest completion judgment.
- Choose the session length. Select 15, 30, or 60 minutes. These are configuration options in the project, not measured estimates of how long a task actually takes.
- Choose the environment. Pick City, Park, Nature, or Anywhere. The generator is instructed not to assume that a particular landmark, trail, animal, body of water, or facility exists.
- Choose a mode. Calm, Move, Explore, and Surprise provide the behavioral framing for the quest. A “Doomscroll Escape” shortcut creates a 15-minute Surprise quest for someone who wants an immediate break from scrolling.
- Generate and read the quest. The model returns exactly three real-world objectives. They appear in a retro receipt-style interface so the instructions can be read quickly before you leave the screen.
- Put the device away. The task is intended to be completed without using the phone as an active companion. You are not asked to keep checking a map, timer, or progress bar.
- Complete the three objectives outside. The instructions are constrained to avoid purchases, private property, dangerous activities, and dependencies on specific local features.
- Return for feedback. In the documented flow, you submit one photo when you return. The system can then provide a completion judgment and award lightweight progress such as XP, a badge, or a daily streak.
This sequence reverses the usual app incentive. The success condition is not a longer session in the interface; it is a completed activity with minimal in-app attention.
Does SideQuest need a phone while you are doing the activity?
No. The quest is specifically designed to be completed after you stop looking at the phone. However, the current browser prototype still uses a screen to select settings, generate the quest, and submit the return photo. “Screenless” describes the activity portion of the loop, not a claim that the present web demo can be operated from start to finish without a phone or computer.
The planned physical version is meant to remove that setup dependency. Its proposed form has a small display, directional buttons, a large PRINT button, and a thermal receipt printer. You would generate or select a quest, print it, take the paper, and walk away from the screen. The project does not identify a final printer model, paper width, manufacturing schedule, or retail release date, so those details should not be treated as settled specifications.
Can SideQuest print quests?
Printing is part of the intended hardware workflow, not a capability that has been documented as a finished consumer product. The proposed machine prints the generated quest on a receipt, making the instructions physically portable and removing the need to keep a browser open outdoors.
For a maker recreating the concept, the defensible hardware category is a thermal receipt printer. The project does not state a printer model or paper width, so buying a particular printer or assuming roll compatibility would be premature. The receipt is an interaction choice: it makes the mission tangible, short, and disposable rather than turning the quest into another persistent app screen.

What quest options and outputs does the generator support?
There are three independent configuration dimensions and one fixed output rule. The options let you tune the context without asking the model to invent a detailed map of your neighborhood.
| Setting | Available choices | What it controls |
|---|---|---|
| Duration | 15, 30, or 60 minutes | The requested time window for the outdoor session |
| Environment | City, Park, Nature, Anywhere | The type of surroundings the instructions should fit |
| Mode | Calm, Move, Explore, Surprise | The tone and activity emphasis of the mission |
| Quest output | Exactly three objectives | The number of real-world tasks returned for each generated quest |
The fixed count is important for predictability. A user can choose a 15-minute session without receiving an open-ended checklist that keeps expanding. The constraints also tell the model not to require a phone, purchases, private property, or risky behavior, and not to rely on a named landmark or facility being present.
What AI model and software stack power SideQuest?
The prototype runs Gemma 3 4B locally through Ollama. “4B” refers to the model’s four-billion-parameter class, as named by the project author; it is not a claim about output quality or speed on every computer.
The surrounding application is intentionally conventional:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- FastAPI provides the web service layer.
- Pydantic validates the structured quest data before it is shown.
- SQLite stores quests and player progress.
- Vanilla JavaScript drives the browser interface without a large front-end framework.
- Ollama serves the local Gemma model instead of sending each generation to a hosted AI endpoint.
Local inference is central to the project’s privacy and cloud-independence goals. It also introduces a practical trade-off: local models depend on the host computer’s CPU, memory, and configuration. A development note records an httpx.ReadTimeout during Gemma inference on slower local hardware; the implementation responded by making the timeout configurable. In other words, “local” removes a cloud dependency but does not guarantee instant generation.
Structured validation is another safety and reliability layer. The application checks the model’s output before displaying it, which helps enforce the three-objective format and requested settings. Validation cannot prove that a suggestion is safe in every location, however, so the project’s prompt constraints and the user’s judgment remain important.

How does SideQuest address privacy and safety?
Privacy is addressed primarily by keeping inference on the machine running the prototype. The author argues that a device intended to help people disconnect should not have to contact a cloud AI service whenever someone wants to walk. Local processing can reduce transmission of quest prompts and progress data, but it does not by itself explain every possible data flow; the browser, database, operating system, and any photo-handling path still need their own security controls.
The generation brief includes explicit behavioral constraints:
- Return structured JSON that the application can validate.
- Generate exactly three tasks.
- Honor the selected duration, environment, and mode.
- Do not require a phone or a purchase to perform the tasks.
- Avoid private property and dangerous activities.
- Do not assume that a particular landmark, animal, trail, body of water, or facility exists.
These are engineering requirements, not proof of an independent safety evaluation. Conditions change by neighborhood, weather, accessibility needs, daylight, and local rules. A sensible user should skip any objective that feels unsafe, trespasses, conflicts with mobility or health limitations, or requires crossing traffic or entering an unfamiliar area. The project’s “honest completion” photo is a lightweight check, not a professional safety monitor or a way to verify every detail of a session.
How is SideQuest different from a conventional outdoor or habit app?
The clearest difference is where the interaction is supposed to happen. SideQuest concentrates setup and feedback on the screen, then moves the actual task to paper or memory. The comparison below uses design axes rather than claiming that every other app behaves identically.
| Comparison axis | SideQuest’s documented design | Question to ask about another app |
|---|---|---|
| Screen exposure during the activity | The user is told to leave the screen and complete the mission outside. | Must the user keep checking a map, timer, feed, or checklist? |
| AI processing | Gemma 3 4B runs locally through Ollama in the prototype. | Does the service process prompts on-device or in a cloud account? |
| Phone requirement while completing tasks | The documented flow does not require active phone use during the task. | Can the activity be completed if the phone stays in a pocket or at home? |
| Output format | A browser receipt-style view today; a printed receipt is proposed for the hardware form. | Is the instruction available away from the app? |
| Gamification | XP, badges, and a daily streak are optional return-loop motivators, kept intentionally lightweight. | Does the product reward time spent inside the app rather than time outside? |
| Safety approach | Prompt constraints and output validation address common hazards and unsupported assumptions. | Are suggestions location-aware, reviewed, or simply generated? |
| Product status | Browser prototype simulating future hardware. | Is there a shipping device, or only a software demonstration? |
This makes SideQuest a useful design reference even if you never use the prototype: it treats the interface as a dispatch point, not as the destination.
Is SideQuest a real device or only a browser prototype?
It is currently a browser implementation used to test quest generation and gameplay. The small device with directional controls, a PRINT button, and a thermal printer is described as a future hardware form. There is no published evidence in the project material of a shipping retail unit, a finalized bill of materials, production certification, or a public release date.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
That status affects expectations. You can evaluate the quest loop and the quality of generated objectives in the browser version, but you cannot assume that the final device’s controls, battery life, printer reliability, offline behavior, or enclosure will match the simulation. Treat hardware references as a roadmap for the interaction, not as a product specification.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How would you try the prototype responsibly?
A short first session is the safest way to judge whether the format suits you. Use the available configuration rather than improvising a longer challenge.
- Start with the 15-minute duration.
- Select an environment that genuinely matches where you are, or use Anywhere when you do not want location-specific assumptions.
- Choose Calm or Move according to your energy and mobility; use Surprise only if you are comfortable with a less predictable prompt.
- Read all three objectives before leaving the screen and reject any instruction that conflicts with weather, access, health, or local rules.
- Put the phone away for the activity instead of using it as a live checklist.
- Return only when you are in a safe place, then use the documented photo-based feedback step if you want the completion judgment.
Because the project does not publish independent efficacy testing, judge it on your own practical outcomes: Did the instructions make you move or notice your surroundings? Did the three-task limit feel manageable? Did the return step motivate you without pulling you back into prolonged scrolling?
What would need to improve before a dedicated SideQuest device?
The concept has a clear hardware direction, but a dependable product would need answers beyond quest generation. The author would need to specify the printer and paper format, power and battery behavior, button navigation, storage limits, model-update process, accessibility, weather resistance, and recovery when local inference is slow or unavailable.
Recommended Free Tools
Safety testing would also need to move beyond prompt rules. Evaluation across different neighborhoods, lighting, weather, ages, mobility needs, and languages could reveal objectives that appear harmless in text but are impractical in context. A photo-based completion check would need explicit privacy retention and deletion rules, especially if images are stored in SQLite or copied elsewhere.
None of these open questions invalidates the prototype. They define the work between a persuasive demonstration and a product that people can trust outdoors without a second device or constant connectivity.

What is the practical verdict on SideQuest AI?
SideQuest is a credible prototype of a screen-light quest loop: local AI creates three bounded objectives, a receipt-like instruction gets you moving, and the app waits for you to come back. Its strongest idea is behavioral rather than technical—the best session is intentionally short on software interaction. Its limits are equally clear: the current browser version is not the proposed physical machine, local inference can be slow on modest hardware, and the safety rules have not been independently validated.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can SideQuest generate a quest without an internet connection?
The prototype is designed around local Gemma inference through Ollama, so quest generation does not have to call a cloud AI service. Actual offline operation still depends on the host computer, the locally installed model, and the rest of the application being available.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
What happens if the local model takes too long to answer?
The project encountered an httpx.ReadTimeout on slower hardware and added a configurable timeout. A longer timeout can let generation finish, while a shorter one fails faster; neither setting guarantees a response time on every machine.
Are the generated objectives suitable for children or people with disabilities?
The published constraints avoid dangerous activities, private property, purchases, and assumptions about local landmarks, but they do not constitute an accessibility or pediatric safety certification. An adult should review each objective and adapt or skip it for the participant and surroundings.
Does the daily streak require using SideQuest every day?
The return loop can award a daily streak, but the project does not publish the exact reset time, grace period, or persistence rules. Those details would need to be confirmed in the implementation rather than inferred from the presence of the feature.
