Satellite internet connects a remote data center to AWS, Azure, or another cloud in the same basic way as any wide-area network circuit: an outdoor terminal sends Ethernet traffic from the facility to a satellite, a gateway places that traffic onto terrestrial fiber and the provider core, and a router then forwards it over the public internet, an encrypted VPN, SD-WAN, or a private cloud connection. The cloud region sees the site as another routed network location. The terminal, gateway geography, weather, congestion, and chosen cloud route determine the practical latency and reliability, so no single “satellite latency” number applies to every deployment.

What is the end-to-end path from a remote data center to the cloud?

The connection has five operational stages. Treating each stage separately makes it easier to design capacity, security, monitoring, and failover.

  1. Remote terminal and LAN handoff. An outdoor phased-array or dish terminal needs a clear view of the sky, a suitable mount, power, grounding, and surge protection. It hands traffic to an indoor provider router or directly to Ethernet, which connects to the data center’s firewall, SD-WAN appliance, or core router.
  2. Space segment. The terminal tracks satellites and maintains the radio link. In a low-Earth-orbit (LEO) broadband system, satellites can hand traffic between spacecraft when inter-satellite links are available. Other systems send traffic from the visible satellite to a gateway on the ground.
  3. Gateway and provider network. A gateway or point of presence moves the traffic onto terrestrial fiber and the provider’s core. Starlink describes bonded gateways with dedicated antennas, laser-mesh routing, and local distribution through fiber, fixed wireless, or mobile networks. Its 2026 Transit material states up to 20 Gbps symmetric throughput for that bonded-gateway service; that is a vendor-stated maximum for the specified service, not a guaranteed rate for every terminal or site.
  4. Cloud handoff. From the provider network, traffic can use the public internet, an encrypted site-to-site VPN, a private WAN, or a cloud connectivity service. The selected AWS or Azure region then receives application traffic as it would from any other WAN location.
  5. Operations and policy. The site router applies VLAN segmentation, firewall rules, quality-of-service (QoS) policies, VPN encryption, and failover logic. Monitoring must cover terminal status, packet loss, jitter, weather effects, gateway congestion, and reachability of the actual cloud regions that run workloads.

Starlink’s Business and Enterprise Guide describes the service as “Unbounded by local infrastructure, and designed to support multiple paths back to the internet.” That describes network reach, not a promise that every path has identical performance or availability.

What equipment does a remote data center need?

A production installation needs more than a satellite dish. The following components form the minimum practical stack.

#1 Best Overall
Iridium GO! Exec Satellite WiFi Hotspot Terminal - Voice, Messaging & Data, Tracking Tracker & GPS Smart Device
  • Applications: explore custom apps for purpose-built email, weather, or industry-specific requirements to provide more cost-effective, efficient use of the Iridium Certus 100 midband service.
  • Messaging Apps: WhatsApp, Viber, Line, Signal, Telegram, Outlook, Gmail, Yahoo, Facebook, and Twitter.
  • Web Browsing: Firefox, Opera.
  • 24/7 SOS Monitoring: support is available through registration with the International Emergency Response Coordination Center (IERCC).
  • Built-in Speakerphone: enjoy cellphone-quality voice communications.
  • Outdoor terminal and mount: Use the provider’s approved phased-array or dish terminal, a structurally sound mount, and a location with an unobstructed sky view. Account for snow, ice, wind, heat, and maintenance access.
  • Power and protection: Provide reliable AC or DC power, grounding, bonding, and surge protection. Include the terminal and its power supply in generator and uninterruptible-power-supply planning.
  • Indoor routing: Install a business firewall, router, or SD-WAN appliance with enough encrypted-throughput capacity for peak traffic. Confirm Ethernet or fiber handoff, VLAN support, IPv4 and IPv6 behavior, and the number of VPN tunnels required.
  • Cloud routing: Define site-to-site VPN, private WAN, or cloud on-ramp requirements before ordering service. Public IPv4 may be available on a business Priority Plan, but private addressing, BGP, and cloud interconnection options depend on the contract and network design.
  • Resilience: If the facility has a strict uptime target, add an independent terrestrial or cellular circuit. A second satellite terminal that shares the same provider gateway or power path may not be truly independent.
  • Observability: Export terminal health, interface counters, latency, packet loss, jitter, weather alerts, VPN state, and cloud-region probes to the same monitoring and incident system used for other WAN links.

How do I connect a remote data center to AWS or Azure?

Most sites use satellite as an internet or backup circuit and then build a normal enterprise WAN overlay on top of it.

Site-to-site VPN over satellite

Terminate an IPsec or equivalent encrypted tunnel on the remote firewall and in a cloud virtual network. Advertise only the required prefixes, use redundant tunnel endpoints where the cloud design supports them, and set tunnel dead-peer timers high enough to tolerate brief satellite interruptions. Test maximum transmission unit (MTU) and fragmentation; encapsulation can reduce the usable packet size.

SD-WAN with satellite as an underlay

An SD-WAN appliance can classify replication, backups, interactive administration, and control traffic separately. Configure the satellite circuit with measured latency, jitter, and loss thresholds, then steer latency-sensitive flows to a terrestrial or cellular path when those thresholds are exceeded. Keep management and emergency access on a policy that still works when bulk transfers saturate the link.

Private connectivity and routing

A provider may offer a private WAN handoff or cloud connectivity service, but the availability of BGP, private addressing, and a particular cloud on-ramp is contract-specific. Ask where the provider gateway enters the cloud provider’s network and whether the route remains stable when the satellite terminal changes spacecraft or gateway. If the service supplies only carrier-grade NAT, inbound connections and some VPN designs may require a different plan or an always-on tunnel initiated from the site.

AWS and Azure region selection

Choose a region based on application, compliance, and measured network path—not simply geographic distance. Probe the exact region, VPN endpoint, storage service, and management APIs that the data center will use. A nearby region can still have a longer or more congested provider route than a farther region.

What is the difference between satellite broadband and AWS Ground Station or Azure Orbital?

Satellite broadband is a WAN link for the data center. AWS Ground Station and Azure Orbital are managed services for communicating with spacecraft and ingesting mission data into cloud services; they are not substitutes for a broadband terminal connecting an ordinary facility.

Characteristic Satellite broadband WAN AWS Ground Station Azure Orbital
Primary purpose Internet, VPN, private-WAN, or backup connectivity for a site Receive telemetry or payload data from spacecraft and process it in AWS Partner-antenna service for spacecraft communications and cloud ingestion
Who operates the space link The broadband provider and its satellite constellation The spacecraft operator schedules managed AWS antennas The spacecraft operator uses Microsoft’s global partner-antenna network
Cloud handoff Traffic reaches a cloud region through internet, VPN, WAN, or on-ramp routing Received data can be sent to EC2 or Lambda for processing and S3 for storage Direct ingestion into Azure Storage, AI, and Data Analytics services
Remote data center’s role Hosts the terminal, router, security controls, and workloads May consume processed spacecraft data over its ordinary WAN May consume processed spacecraft data over its ordinary WAN
Typical equipment at the site Outdoor broadband terminal, power, router, firewall, and monitoring No local spacecraft antenna is required when using the managed service No local spacecraft antenna is required when using the managed partner service

AWS says its managed antennas are located within AWS facilities and interconnected through Amazon’s global backbone. Microsoft describes Azure Orbital as a global partner-antenna service with cloud modems and direct delivery into Azure services. Neither service turns a remote data center into a broadband satellite customer; they solve the spacecraft-to-cloud leg.

Can Starlink serve as a data-center backhaul or backup link?

Yes, a business satellite service can serve as the primary backhaul for an isolated facility or as a diverse backup for a terrestrial WAN, provided the site accepts variable performance and designs around the provider’s actual plan and gateway footprint.

Starlink advertises fixed remote sites, network backup, and enterprise use. Its Priority Plans advertise a 99.9% network-availability SLA in 2026. That is a plan-specific vendor commitment, not a universal guarantee for satellite internet, and it does not mean that an application, VPN, cloud region, or local power system will be available 99.9% of the time.

The same 2026 Starlink Transit material lists up to 20 Gbps symmetric throughput through bonded gateways. A normal terminal may deliver materially less, and usable throughput can vary with subscription, contention, gateway location, weather, obstructions, and traffic mix. How should a team deploy and validate the connection?

Use a staged deployment rather than moving production traffic as soon as the terminal obtains a signal.

  1. Map the workload. Record peak and sustained upload/download rates for backups, replication, container images, patching, interactive administration, and cloud APIs. Identify flows that can tolerate delay and those that cannot.
  2. Survey the site. Verify sky visibility throughout the terminal’s expected look angles, mounting strength, cable routes, grounding, lightning protection, and generator or UPS capacity.
  3. Select the service and contract. Confirm coverage, gateway geography, data policies, public or private addressing, IPv6, support, installation obligations, SLA language, and recurring and equipment charges for the specific country.
  4. Install an isolated test segment. Connect the terminal to a dedicated VLAN and firewall interface. Do not expose management interfaces directly to the internet.
  5. Build secure routing. Establish VPN or SD-WAN tunnels, limit advertised prefixes, apply least-privilege firewall rules, and define QoS classes. Set conservative bandwidth ceilings so backups cannot consume all capacity.
  6. Measure the real cloud path. Test the chosen AWS and Azure regions, VPN endpoints, object-storage endpoints, and management services at different times of day and in varied weather. Record latency, jitter, loss, throughput, and tunnel stability.
  7. Exercise failover. Disconnect the satellite circuit, the backup circuit, and the power source in separate tests. Confirm route convergence, DNS behavior, stateful-session handling, alerting, and restoration when the link returns.
  8. Approve workloads gradually. Start with monitoring, asynchronous replication, and backup traffic. Add interactive or latency-sensitive applications only after measurements meet their documented thresholds.

Which performance and design factors matter most?

Compare candidate services using the same test plan. A headline download rate is not enough for a data center.

Factor Questions to answer
Coverage and gateway geography Is service licensed at the site, and where does traffic enter terrestrial fiber?
Latency and jitter What are the measured values to the selected cloud region during busy and quiet periods?
Upload capacity Can the link sustain replication and backup uploads, or is it asymmetric or congested?
Data limits and policy Are there priority quotas, deprioritization rules, or traffic restrictions?
Availability and weather How do rain, snow, ice, heat, and obstructions affect the terminal, and what does the SLA actually cover?
Addressing and routing Is public IPv4 available, is carrier-grade NAT used, and are BGP or private WAN options included?
Security controls Can the firewall enforce segmentation, VPN encryption, MFA-protected administration, and logging?
Installation and power What mounting, cabling, grounding, heating, and UPS capacity are required?
Support and recovery What is the replacement process, escalation path, and expected restoration time?
Total cost Include terminal and mount, installation, power work, recurring service, data or priority fees, router, backup circuit, and monitoring.

No universal latency figure is valid across all constellations, gateways, weather conditions, and routes. Measure the path to the cloud region that will actually run the workload.

How do security and operations change on a satellite link?

Satellite does not remove the need for conventional network security. Encrypt data in transit with VPNs or application-layer encryption, segment operational technology and management networks, disable unsolicited inbound access, and restrict terminal and router administration to a management VLAN or zero-trust access path.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Design alerts around symptoms rather than a single “online” flag. A terminal can be registered while the cloud VPN is unusable because of packet loss, gateway congestion, expired credentials, route changes, or MTU problems. Track independent probes to each critical cloud service, plus interface utilization and tunnel health.

Schedule large backups and replication for periods when the link is least contended, but retain rate limits because contention can change quickly. Keep a local queue so an outage does not force applications to retry indefinitely. Document how operators will reach the site when both the primary tunnel and the normal out-of-band path fail.

What commonly fails, and how can it be fixed?

Intermittent drops during rain or snow

Inspect the sky view, mount, radome or dish surface, cable connectors, and terminal temperature. Clear accumulated snow or ice using the provider’s approved method, and compare outage timestamps with weather data. If weather-related loss is expected, shift critical traffic to the independent terrestrial or cellular path.

VPN establishes but applications time out

Check MTU and fragmentation, asymmetric routing, idle timers, DNS reachability, and firewall state. Reduce tunnel packet size, permit the required cloud prefixes, and test the application endpoint rather than relying only on a successful tunnel handshake.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Throughput falls during busy periods

Check provider policy, gateway congestion, terminal health, and local interface utilization. Apply QoS and rate limits, move bulk transfers to a queue, and compare results with the service’s priority terms before increasing hardware capacity.

Inbound connections do not work

Determine whether the plan uses carrier-grade NAT. If so, use outbound-initiated VPN tunnels, a cloud relay, or a plan that supplies a suitable public address; do not expose management services by bypassing the firewall.

Failover causes duplicate or stale sessions

Validate route metrics, stateful firewall synchronization, DNS TTLs, and application retry behavior. Some long-lived TCP sessions will need to reconnect when the public path changes, so applications should support resumable transfers and idempotent jobs.

When is satellite the right choice?

Satellite is compelling when fiber, microwave, or reliable cellular service is unavailable, when a site needs geographically diverse backup, or when deployment speed matters more than perfectly predictable network characteristics. It is a weaker fit for tightly synchronized databases, latency-sensitive control loops, or workloads that require guaranteed private addressing and stable routes unless the provider and cloud design explicitly support those requirements.

Make the decision with measured evidence: the exact terminal location, service plan, gateway route, cloud region, workload profile, weather exposure, and failover design. Treat quoted throughput and availability as plan-specific vendor figures, and budget for a second path when the business impact of a satellite outage exceeds the cost of independent connectivity.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does satellite internet require a special AWS or Azure router?

No. The satellite terminal normally presents Ethernet to a standard enterprise firewall, router, or SD-WAN appliance. The special requirements are usually policy and routing related—VPN support, MTU handling, failover, and any public or private addressing terms in the satellite contract.

Can a remote data center run backups over a satellite link?

Yes, if the upload requirement fits the service’s measured and sustained capacity. Use deduplication, compression, bandwidth caps, resumable jobs, and local queuing so a backup does not starve interactive traffic or restart from zero after an interruption.

Will a satellite connection always use the nearest cloud region?

No. The provider’s gateway and terrestrial peering determine the route, which may not follow geographic distance. Measure the path to each candidate region and select the region that meets application, compliance, and performance requirements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What happens if the satellite terminal loses power?

The cloud connection fails even if the satellite network itself is healthy. Put the terminal, its power supply, and the router on appropriately sized UPS and generator circuits, and monitor power and terminal state separately so operators can distinguish an electrical outage from a radio or gateway problem.
