Roku devices check for software updates during setup, when they turn on, and at random intervals every 24–36 hours. Available updates usually download and install automatically; the device may restart when installation is ready. You can also check manually at Home > Settings > System > System update > Check now. An update may add or change features, improve the interface, or address security issues, but what reaches your device depends on its model, software version, region, and rollout timing.
When does a Roku device check for updates?
Roku says a device checks for available updates during initial setup, each time it turns on, and randomly every 24–36 hours. That means most people do not need to start a check themselves. If a device has been disconnected for an extended period, or you want to see whether an update is available now, you can use the manual check in its System update menu.

Automatic checking and automatic installation are related but distinct. A check looks for available software; when software or app updates are available, Roku says the device downloads and installs them. Roku describes updates as usually installing without interrupting use, but its update instructions also say the device restarts once an update is ready. Plan for a restart rather than assuming every installation will be invisible.
The restart is part of the update process, not by itself evidence of a problem. Avoid interrupting power or the network while an update is downloading or installing. If the device appears stuck or reports an error, use the troubleshooting steps below rather than repeatedly unplugging it during installation.

How do I check for a Roku update manually?
Use the System update screen to request a check and see the software information Roku displays for your device. The wording can vary somewhat by device or software version, so follow the closest matching labels on your screen.
- Press Home on the Roku remote.
- Open Settings, then System.
- Choose System update.
- Select Check now.
- If an update is available, let the device download and install it. It may restart when the installation is ready.
Roku’s update instructions say this screen also displays the current software and build version, along with the date and time of the most recent update. Those details can help distinguish “there is no update available” from “I do not know what version is installed.” Make a note of them if you need to check feature eligibility or describe an update problem to support.

Roku’s instructions published in Brazilian Portuguese and its English-language Canada troubleshooting guidance describe the same general System update and Check now flow. Because menu labels may differ, the on-device System update screen is the practical guide if the exact wording above does not match.
What can a Roku software update change?
An update can affect the Roku operating system, the interface, device features, or security protections. Roku publishes feature notes and a separate security update history; these records explain the kinds of changes associated with releases, but they do not mean that every listed change appears on every device at the same time.
Interface and feature changes
Roku’s feature notes dated October 2, 2026 describe Roku Labs, subscription bundles in the United States and Mexico, a more personalized search experience, and Home Screen expansion to Brazil and Mexico “in the coming months.” The notes also describe an earlier Home Screen change beginning its rollout in the United States on May 27, 2026. These are examples of changes and rollouts Roku has described, not a guarantee that a particular reader’s device already has them.

A feature may depend on more than whether the device has downloaded a recent update. Roku’s compatibility guidance, for example, sets different model and minimum-software requirements for AirPlay and HomeKit. If a feature is absent, check the requirements for that specific capability and identify your model and installed version before concluding that an update failed.

Security fixes
Roku tracks security updates separately from its feature notes. Its security history lists Roku OS 15.3 as released August 6, 2026, and associates that release with CVE-2013-1773, CVE-2023-0386, and CVE-2018-14617. The same history lists Roku OS 15.2 as released May 7, 2026 and records CVEs Roku associates with that release. Those entries describe Roku’s release history; they do not establish which version is installed on your device or whether 15.3 is the newest version available to it.
Roku’s security page says its automatic software updates are designed to make its products’ latest security and privacy features easier to receive. The useful practical point is to let available updates complete, while using your device’s own version and update screen—not a release-history entry alone—to determine its current software state.
Why might two Roku devices receive different changes?
Roku software features are not necessarily universal or simultaneous. Model, minimum software requirements, region, and the timing of a rollout can all affect what a device is eligible to receive or display.
| What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Device model | Some features apply only to particular model groups; some devices also lack an Ethernet port. |
| Installed software version | A feature may require a minimum Roku OS version. The System update screen displays the current version and build information. |
| Region | Roku’s feature notes describe geographic availability and rollouts, including changes tied to the United States, Mexico, and Brazil. |
| Rollout timing | A feature note may describe a rollout beginning on a certain date or expected in the coming months, rather than immediate availability for all eligible devices. |
For example, Roku’s October 2, 2026 notes describe Home Screen expansion to Brazil and Mexico as occurring “in the coming months.” That wording is a rollout expectation in those notes, not evidence that the feature is already active on every eligible device in those countries. Likewise, a dated release-history entry is not a promise that each model or region receives the same feature set at once.

When comparing a feature note with your device, use the note’s date and region, the feature’s compatibility requirements, and your installed version together. A missing interface item by itself is not enough to diagnose a failed update.
What should I do if a Roku update fails?
Start with the network connection. Roku’s troubleshooting guidance points to the selected Wi-Fi network, internet connectivity, a weak signal, and update-server or download problems as possible issues. Work through the checks in order, then run another manual update check.
- Confirm the selected network. In the Roku network settings, check that the device is connected to the Wi-Fi network you intend to use.
- Test the internet connection. If the connection is unavailable or unstable, resolve that first; an update needs a working route to download.
- Restart the Roku device and router. After they come back online, confirm the Roku reconnects to the network.
- Try the manual check. Go to Home > Settings > System > System update > Check now, using the equivalent labels shown on your device if they differ.
- Improve the connection if it is weak. Move the player closer to the router, reduce obstacles, or avoid placing it behind the TV.
- Consider Ethernet only if your model supports it. Roku says a wired connection can be faster and more reliable and may resolve update failures.
Roku’s error-code guidance connects different errors with issues such as an unreachable update server, weak internet, a failed download or installation, or a timeout. The error category can help narrow the next check: a connectivity issue calls for network troubleshooting, while a download or installation failure merits another check after the connection is stable. Do not infer a precise cause from a failed update alone if the device’s message points to a different problem.
Ethernet is a conditional troubleshooting option, not a requirement for routine updates. Check whether your particular Roku has an Ethernet port before considering a wired connection; Roku says only some devices support it. If it does, a direct wired connection may help separate a weak Wi-Fi signal from other causes of the failure.
What if paired Roku speakers or a soundbar are involved?
Roku says wireless speakers, soundbars, and subwoofers update at the same time as the Roku device they are paired with. If an accessory appears involved in the problem, check that it has power and is within range, then restart both it and the Roku device. Troubleshooting the player alone may not resolve an issue affecting a paired accessory.

How can I tell whether an update changed something?
First, check the installed software version and build on the System update screen. Then compare the version and date with Roku’s release information, keeping in mind that release notes describe changes associated with releases and rollouts, not necessarily the exact contents or timing on every individual device.
For a specific feature, look up that feature’s model and minimum-version requirements. Also check whether the relevant notes specify a region or staged rollout. If your version appears current but a feature is missing, these eligibility and availability details may explain the difference without a failed installation.
For a security question, consult Roku’s security update history rather than relying only on feature announcements. The page’s listed releases and CVEs are useful context, but your device’s displayed version is what establishes the software currently installed on that device.
What should I keep in mind about Roku’s 2026 release information?
Roku’s feature notes include an entry dated October 2, 2026. Its security update history lists a last-updated stamp of August 10, 2026, including the 15.3 and 15.2 entries described above. These dates identify what those pages report; they do not determine the current version on an individual Roku or guarantee the same rollout status across models and regions.
Roku’s own device screen is the best place to establish the software version installed on your player or TV. For a question about a particular capability, combine that information with the relevant model and compatibility guidance. This avoids treating a release announcement as a device-specific status report.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a Roku update change my apps or remove them?
The Roku update guidance described here does not establish whether a particular update will add, remove, or alter an individual app. Check the app’s availability and your device’s on-screen behavior rather than assuming a system release will preserve or change a specific app.
Will my Roku update while I am watching something?
Roku says updates usually install without interrupting use, but it also says the device restarts when an update is ready. That means an update is often unobtrusive, but a restart can still occur.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Does a Roku factory reset install the latest software?
The update instructions do not establish that a factory reset installs the latest available software. If your goal is to check for an update, use the System update screen rather than relying on a reset.
Can I make a Roku install a feature before its rollout reaches my region?
Roku’s notes describe region-specific and timed rollouts, but the cited guidance does not provide a control for overriding them. A manual update check can check for available software; it does not establish that a not-yet-available regional feature can be forced onto a device.
