PSA grades a Pokémon card in two stages: it first checks whether the card is authentic and eligible for grading, then evaluates its overall condition on a 1–10 scale. Centering, corners, edges and surface are the main inspection categories, but PSA does not publish a formula that assigns each category a fixed numerical weight. A PSA 10 is described as “a virtually perfect card,” with approximately 55/45 front centering and 75/25 reverse centering, strong corners and edges, sharp focus, original gloss and no staining. A card can be pulled straight from a pack and still miss those standards because manufacturing defects, off-centering or undersizing may already be present. This guide explains what to inspect, how PSA’s grades and qualifiers differ, and how to prepare a card for submission.

What does PSA check before assigning a Pokémon card grade?

PSA authenticates the card before judging condition. If authenticity, size, alterations or other eligibility issues are in doubt, the result can be a No Grade rather than a low number. For an eligible authentic card, graders consider four primary areas—centering, corners, edges and surface—then make an overall eye-appeal judgment. PSA’s FAQ and grading materials describe these categories in its Grader Notes, not as four equally weighted subgrades (PSA trading-card grading; PSA Grading Standards).

The familiar 1–10 number is therefore a holistic result. A centering measurement that appears within a published tolerance does not guarantee a 10 if the card has a distracting scratch, corner issue or print defect. Conversely, a minor manufacturing imperfection may be acceptable when the card’s overall appeal remains exceptionally strong.

How is centering measured on a Pokémon card?

Centering compares the width of opposite borders, separately on the front and reverse. Inspect both left-versus-right and top-versus-bottom borders; a card can be centered in one direction and noticeably off-center in the other.

For a PSA 10, the current grading-standards page gives approximate tolerances of 55/45 on the front and 75/25 on the reverse. These are the current figures to use rather than a broader range quoted in an older PSA article dated March 27, 1996. PSA also reserves room for eye appeal, so a borderline measurement is not a mathematical promise of a Gem Mint 10.

A practical centering check

  1. Place the card under even, diffuse light and keep it flat. Avoid judging from a perspective angle that makes one border look wider.
  2. Compare the left and right borders on the front, then the top and bottom borders. Repeat the process on the reverse.
  3. Look for borders that taper, shift or vary because of a print cut rather than assuming every edge is perfectly parallel.
  4. Use a centering gauge or ruler as an aid if desired, but treat the reading as an estimate. PSA’s final decision includes visual balance and the rest of the card.

Do not use the reverse tolerance to excuse poor front centering. The two faces are judged independently, and both directions matter. If the card is clearly beyond the approximate front tolerance, a PSA 10 becomes unlikely even when the surface and corners are excellent; the likely outcome still depends on the complete inspection.

What do PSA graders look for in Pokémon card corners?

Graders inspect all four corners on the front and back for whitening, fraying, bends, dents and loss of the original cut. Pokémon cards are designed with rounded corners, so a smooth rounded shape is normal; a chipped, flattened or fuzzy portion of that shape is wear.

PSA’s descriptions illustrate the difference between nearby grades. A PSA 10 is virtually perfect. A PSA 9 is nearly perfect but may have one minor flaw. A PSA 8 can show slight fraying on one or two corners, a minor printing imperfection or slight off-centering. These are examples of the overall appearance, not a public rule that subtracts a fixed point for each damaged corner.

How to inspect corners without causing damage

  • View each corner straight on, then tilt the card slightly to reveal lifted fibers or a shallow crease.
  • Check the colored front and the reverse separately; whitening may be easier to see against a dark back.
  • Do not squeeze the card or repeatedly remove it from a sleeve. Repeated handling can create the very edge and corner wear you are trying to detect.
  • Record the worst corner and its location. A single conspicuous flaw can affect eye appeal more than several barely visible manufacturing variations.

A rounded corner that is uniform on all cards from a set is part of the design. A single corner with a white fleck, missing ink or crushed tip is a condition issue, even if the card was never played.

How are Pokémon card edges evaluated?

Edges are checked around the entire perimeter on both faces. Look for whitening, chipping, dents, rough cuts and places where the colored layer has separated. Compare an edge under direct light and at a shallow angle; some chips are easy to miss when the card is viewed flat.

PSA’s discussion of the 1999 first-edition Pokémon Base Set gives a useful, set-specific example: collectors noted that the blue-backed cards can show substantial whitening or chipping along the edges. That observation applies to that older blue-back context, not automatically to every Pokémon expansion or printing (PSA’s first-edition Pokémon article).

Inspect the top, bottom and both side edges, then turn the card over and repeat. A rough factory cut is a manufacturing characteristic, while a bright spot caused by rubbing or a dent caused by pressure is handling damage. PSA weighs the visibility and effect on overall appeal rather than publishing a universal deduction for each type of edge mark.

What surface defects can lower a Pokémon card grade?

Surface inspection covers the front, reverse and—where present—the holographic area. Check for scratches, scuffs, fingerprints, stains, dents, indentations, print lines, roller marks, fading, loss of gloss and focus or registration problems. Holo foil can reflect light in a way that hides a scratch at one angle, so slowly rotate the card under a single light source.

PSA’s PSA 10 standard calls for original gloss, sharp focus and no staining. It allows a slight printing imperfection only when it does not impair overall appeal; a visible print line therefore is not an automatic disqualifier in every case. PSA’s glossary lists print lines among possible print defects (PSA card-collecting glossary).

Surface checks for holographic Pokémon cards

  1. Use clean hands and hold the card by its edges, preferably inside a clean sleeve while you inspect it.
  2. Angle the card through several small rotations. Scratches often appear as bright or dark streaks that disappear when the reflection changes.
  3. Check the non-holo frame, artwork window, text area and reverse, not only the foil.
  4. Separate a printed line or ink variation from a physical scratch by looking for a change in reflection or a groove.

Do not spray, polish, press, whiten or otherwise treat the card to hide a defect. PSA lists applied substances and altered stock among possible No Grade reasons. An attempted repair can create a more serious eligibility problem than the original mark.

What is the difference between PSA 10, PSA 9 and PSA 8?

PSA’s qualitative descriptions are more useful than treating a card as a checklist with guaranteed deductions:

Grade PSA’s published description and practical meaning
PSA 10 Gem Mint “A virtually perfect card.” Approximately 55/45 front and 75/25 reverse centering, strong corners, edges, focus and original gloss, with no staining. A slight printing imperfection can be acceptable if overall appeal is unaffected.
PSA 9 Mint Nearly perfect, but a minor flaw may be present. The flaw can be a small manufacturing or handling issue that remains limited and unobtrusive.
PSA 8 Near Mint–Mint May show slight fraying on one or two corners, a minor printing imperfection or slight off-centering, while retaining strong overall presentation.

PSA does not expose a current public numerical tolerance for every grade on its accessible standards page. Avoid applying centering ratios from the 1996 article as if they were verified 2026 rules. The same defect can lead to different outcomes depending on its size, location, visibility and interaction with other flaws.

Can a pack-fresh Pokémon card still fail to receive a PSA 10?

Yes. A fresh pull has no guarantee of a Gem Mint grade. PSA explains that centering and print defects can be present when a card leaves the pack, and a card may receive no numeric grade if it is significantly undersized (PSA on fresh pulls).

Before submission, inspect the exact card rather than relying on the set’s reputation or the fact that it was immediately sleeved. A sealed product can contain cards with off-center cuts, factory whitening, print lines or dents from manufacturing and packaging.

What are PSA qualifiers and No Grade results?

A qualifier is different from an ordinary low grade and different from an authenticity failure. PSA lists optional qualifiers such as OC (off-center), ST (staining), PD (print defect) and OF (out of focus). It also lists required qualifiers including MK (marks) and MC (miscut), subject to PSA’s rules and the service ordered (PSA FAQ).

A No Grade can result from suspected alteration, questionable authenticity, minimum-size failure or certain miscuts, among other listed reasons. A card that receives an OC qualifier has been judged authentic but has a centering issue; it has not failed authentication. Grader Notes may describe centering, corners, edges and surface for eligible orders, but PSA excludes PSA 10 and No Grade results and limits notes by service and geography, so notes are not guaranteed for every submission.

How should you pre-screen a Pokémon card before submitting it?

Start with identity and eligibility, then inspect condition in a consistent order. This prevents an attractive surface from distracting you from a size, authenticity or major edge problem.

  1. Identify the card. Record the set, card number, language, variant, rarity and any edition or print designation. Different printings can have different known manufacturing characteristics.
  2. Check authenticity and size. Compare typography, symbols, colors and construction with a trusted reference. Look for severe trimming or an obviously undersized card; do not alter the card while investigating.
  3. Inspect centering. Measure front and reverse left-right and top-bottom borders, treating the approximately 55/45 front and 75/25 reverse figures as PSA 10 guidance, not a promise.
  4. Inspect corners and edges. Photograph or note whitening, chipping, fraying, dents and any corner that looks different from the others.
  5. Inspect the surface. Rotate the card under light, including the holo area, and distinguish scratches or dents from printed lines.
  6. Set a realistic outcome range. Consider whether a PSA 8, 9, qualifier or No Grade would still justify the current service fee, shipping and time. Check PSA’s live service availability and prices immediately before ordering; they can change.

Historical population figures are not a prediction for your card. For example, PSA reported 95 PSA 10 examples among 1,071 submitted first-edition Charizard cards in a 2016 article, with figures stated as of May 2016. That snapshot should not be converted into a current Pokémon PSA 10 probability.

How do you package a Pokémon card for PSA submission?

PSA’s shipping guide calls for a clear penny sleeve followed by a correctly sized semi-rigid holder for a standard card. PSA specifically says not to use a toploader for this submission step (PSA shipping instructions).

  1. Put the dry, clean card into a clear penny sleeve without forcing the corners.
  2. Slide the sleeved card into a semi-rigid holder measuring approximately 3 5/16 × 4 7/8 inches for standard cards.
  3. Follow PSA’s current order form, service-level, labeling and shipping directions exactly. Requirements can vary by service and location.
  4. Keep your own photographs and inventory record before shipping, and use the carrier and insurance approach appropriate to the card’s value.

Do not tape, glue, press or chemically clean the card. If the card is unusually thick, oversized or shaped differently, verify PSA’s current instructions before selecting a holder.

Is a centering tool enough to predict a PSA grade?

No. A tool can estimate border ratios and help you reject clearly off-center cards, but it cannot evaluate authenticity, surface texture, corner fibers, edge chipping, focus or eye appeal. PSA explicitly treats borderline centering as a judgment call, so a tool should support—not replace—a full front-and-back inspection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How should you decide whether grading is worthwhile?

Make the decision from the card’s identity and plausible condition, not from a hoped-for 10. Estimate the best realistic grade after checking all four categories, then compare that outcome with current PSA fees, shipping, turnaround expectations and your willingness to receive a lower grade, qualifier or No Grade. A card can be personally valuable even when grading does not make financial sense, while a valuable card may justify professional authentication and encapsulation despite imperfect condition.

Use PSA’s current standards and shipping pages on the day you submit because service options, note eligibility and prices can change. The most defensible pre-screen is specific: front and reverse centering, all eight visible corners and edges, the complete surface, and any signs of alteration or size problems.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does PSA publish separate numerical subgrades for centering, corners, edges and surface?

No. PSA identifies those as primary areas in its grading information and Grader Notes, but the final 1–10 result is holistic rather than four publicly weighted subgrades. A borderline issue in one category can be offset or amplified by the card’s overall eye appeal.

Can a visible print line still be compatible with PSA 10?

Possibly. PSA’s PSA 10 description allows a slight printing imperfection when it does not impair overall appeal, so visibility, location and severity matter. A deep scratch, stain or distracting line should not be treated as equivalent to a tiny unobtrusive factory mark.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What does an OC qualifier mean on a Pokémon card?

OC means off-center. It indicates that PSA authenticated the card but identified centering as a qualifying issue; it is not the same as a No Grade for questionable authenticity or alteration.

Why might PSA return a card without a number even when it looks genuine?

PSA lists reasons such as suspected alteration, questionable authenticity, minimum-size failure and certain miscuts for No Grade outcomes. Significant undersizing can occur during manufacturing, so being pulled from a pack does not remove that risk.

Should I remove a card from its sleeve to inspect it before mailing?

Inspect as much as possible while minimizing handling, then use the clear penny sleeve and semi-rigid holder required by PSA’s shipping guidance. Repeatedly sliding a card in and out can create corner or edge wear, and a dirty surface or rough holder can add scratches.
