PS5 3D Audio is Sony’s Tempest 3D AudioTech, a console-based spatial-audio system that renders separate signals for your left and right ears. You can use it with most compatible stereo headphones connected by USB or to the DualSense controller’s 3.5 mm jack; a Sony PULSE headset is optional, not required. Enable it at Settings > Sound > 3D Audio (Headphones), then create a personalized profile or select one of five presets.
The result is not identical in every game. Developers decide how much spatial information to author and optimize, so one title may make footsteps and passing projectiles easy to place while another produces a subtler change. The guide below explains the headphone signal path, setup, compatibility limits, supported-game examples and the separate TV-speaker mode.

What is PS5 3D Audio?
PS5 3D Audio is the console’s Tempest 3D AudioTech processing. Instead of sending an ordinary left-right mix, the PS5 calculates headphone signals intended to make sounds appear at particular positions around you. Stereo headphones reproduce those two ear-specific channels, and your brain interprets timing, level and tonal differences as direction and distance.
That can make an arrow seem to pass close by, or footsteps sound as though they are coming from another room. Those are examples of what the system can convey, not a guarantee that every sound in every title will be fully positioned. The game’s audio design determines whether it supplies the spatial information Tempest can render.

Tempest processing happens in the PS5. The headset mainly provides two separate playback channels, so buying a special “3D” headphone is not a technical requirement. Fit, seal, comfort and the headset’s own frequency response can still change how clearly you perceive the cues.
How does PS5 3D audio work with headphones?
The path is straightforward: the game generates audio, the PS5’s Tempest engine calculates a binaural-style left and right presentation, and the console sends those channels to your connected headset. The processing can suggest horizontal position, height and distance when the game’s mix includes suitable information.
- Game audio is produced. Voices, ambience, effects and gameplay sounds are placed by the developer’s audio system.
- Tempest renders the scene. The PS5 applies its spatial processing for headphone playback rather than sending a simple stereo pan.
- Your headset receives two channels. USB headsets receive audio digitally; analog headphones receive it through the DualSense’s 3.5 mm output.
- Your hearing completes the illusion. The personalized profile or a preset adjusts the rendering so the virtual sound positions better match your perceived ear level.
Because the final result depends on the title, 3D Audio should be treated as a playback capability rather than a promise that every game has a bespoke surround mix.
Do I need a Sony PULSE headset?
No. Sony’s compatibility guidance says most USB and analog headsets can be used, including a wired headset plugged into the DualSense controller. PULSE Elite and PULSE Explore are named Sony options, but neither is necessary to access Tempest 3D Audio.
| Headphone connection | PS5 guidance | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| USB headset | Generally supported | Use the headset’s USB cable or receiver and confirm the model’s PS5 compatibility. |
| 3.5 mm wired headset | Supported through the DualSense headset jack | Insert the plug fully and select the controller headset as the output if the console does not switch automatically. |
| Third-party Bluetooth-only headset | Not supported for direct connection according to Sony’s FAQ | Use a supported USB connection or another connection method documented by the manufacturer. |
| Older PS4-licensed headset | Compatibility is model-specific | Some require a firmware update; some may not work on PS5. Check the maker’s support page before relying on it. |
A headset advertised as “7.1,” “surround” or “3D” does not automatically improve Tempest output. If it applies its own virtual-surround processing, try that feature off first so you can judge the PS5 rendering by itself; the exact controls and behavior are manufacturer-specific.
How do I set up 3D audio on PS5 headphones?
Use the PS5’s current sound settings. Menu names can change with system software, but the headphone entry is labeled 3D Audio (Headphones).

- Follow the prompts. You will hear sounds at different apparent positions and identify where they seem to be.
- If you do not want to create a profile, select one of the five preset profiles instead.
- Play a familiar game at a comfortable listening level and keep the profile that makes voices, effects and movement easiest for you to place.
The personalized result is a preference setting, not a laboratory measurement that is objectively correct for everyone. Sony’s Kenichi Imai explained that people hear 3D audio differently, which is why the PS5 offers adjustments intended to bring virtual sounds closer to each player’s perceived ear level.
When should you use a preset?
Presets are useful when you want a quick comparison, are sharing the console, or do not like the sound of the personalized profile. Switch between the personalized profile and a preset in the same headphone 3D-audio settings and judge them with the same game, volume and headset position.
Which PS5 games support 3D audio?
Many PS5 games use 3D audio, but support and effect strength vary by title. Sony says developer implementation and optimization determine the exact result, so an official game listing or current support page is the right place to confirm a particular release.
Sony’s October 6, 2020 launch announcement named these examples:
| Game | How to interpret the listing |
|---|---|
| Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales | Launch-era example of a PS5 game identified with 3D Audio features. |
| Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered | Launch-era example; the listing does not imply every sound is equally spatial. |
| Astro’s Playroom | Launch-era example designed for PS5 hardware features. |
| Gran Turismo 7 | Named by Sony as a title with 3D Audio features. |
| Returnal | Later developer coverage discussed Housemarque’s creative use of Tempest. |
| Destruction AllStars | Included in Sony’s launch-era examples. |
| Demon’s Souls | Included in Sony’s launch-era examples. |
| Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart | Included in Sony’s launch-era examples. |
| Sackboy: A Big Adventure | Included in Sony’s launch-era examples. |
| Horizon Forbidden West | Included in Sony’s launch-era examples. |
| Resident Evil Village | Later developer coverage discussed Capcom’s approach to Tempest. |
This is a historical set of examples, not a complete current directory. Games released or updated later may add, alter or omit 3D-audio features. If positional audio matters for a purchase, check the current PlayStation store description, the developer’s support information or the game’s in-game audio options.
Why does the effect differ from one game to another?
Tempest can only render the spatial information a game supplies. A developer may place individual objects in three-dimensional space, use the system mainly for ambience, or mix some sounds conventionally. Two games with the same console setting can therefore produce noticeably different results.

Returnal and Resident Evil Village
Sony’s developer feature used Returnal and Resident Evil Village to show that Tempest is a creative option rather than a fixed preset imposed on every title. Their teams made different choices about how to use spatial cues, so the examples should not be read as a universal sound signature for all games.
What 3D audio cannot guarantee
- It cannot make a game with little or no positional authoring behave like a fully object-based mix.
- It cannot compensate for a poor headphone fit, a damaged cable or a headset that is not actually receiving the PS5 output.
- It does not establish that one headset or profile is superior for every listener.
Can PS5 3D audio use TV speakers?
Yes. TV-speaker 3D audio is a separate mode from headphone processing. Current PlayStation support instructions describe measuring the room with the microphone built into the wireless controller, then comparing stereo and 3D audio from the television.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Place yourself where you normally play and make sure the TV is in its usual position.
- Open the PS5 sound settings and select the TV-speaker 3D-audio setup shown on your console.
- Hold the DualSense controller as instructed so its built-in microphone can measure the room from your seating position.
- Complete the on-screen measurement, then compare stereo with 3D audio.
- Run the measurement again if you move the TV, change your seating position or substantially alter the room.
The TV route does not require headphones, and its calibration is not interchangeable with a headphone profile. Sony’s 2020 launch announcement said TV virtual surround was planned for a future update; current support documentation now describes the feature, so the present console instructions take precedence over that launch note.
How should I choose headphones for PS5 3D audio?
Choose for connection reliability and wearing comfort first. Tempest does not require a proprietary headset, and the available evidence does not establish a universal sound-quality advantage for a particular brand.
| Decision factor | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Connection | Does it connect by USB, a supported USB adapter or the DualSense 3.5 mm jack? Is direct Bluetooth-only operation excluded? |
| Compatibility | Does the manufacturer list the exact model as PS5-compatible? Does an older PS4 model need firmware? |
| Comfort and fit | Can you wear it for a full session without pressure or a broken seal that changes the sound? |
| Microphone | Do you need voice chat, and does the selected connection carry microphone audio as well as game sound? |
| Processing controls | Can you disable the headset’s own surround or enhancement mode while testing Tempest? |
If you are buying, search for a PS5-compatible stereo gaming headset and verify the exact connection and firmware requirements. A normal stereo model is sufficient for trying the console feature.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should I do if PS5 3D audio is not working?
No sound after connecting a headset
- Reseat the 3.5 mm plug or reconnect the USB cable and receiver.
- Check the PS5 sound-output device and confirm that the headset is selected.
- For a controller connection, raise the headset volume with the controller’s audio controls and verify that the plug is fully inserted.
An older headset is detected but behaves incorrectly
Look up the exact model with its manufacturer. Sony notes that some PS4-licensed headsets require a firmware update and that some are not compatible, so a console setting cannot fix a model-level incompatibility.

Bluetooth pairing fails
Third-party Bluetooth-only wireless headsets are not supported directly according to Sony’s FAQ. Use a compatible USB connection or the DualSense analog jack instead, if the headset supports one.
The sound feels unnatural or less precise
Compare the personalized profile with each of the five presets at the same comfortable volume. Also disable any headset-side virtual-surround processing while comparing; stacked processing can change the presentation, although the exact effect depends on the headset.
A game still does not sound directional
Confirm the title’s current audio support information. The PS5 can have 3D Audio enabled while a particular game uses the feature lightly or not at all; developer implementation controls the result.
Is PS5 3D audio worth enabling?
It is worth trying because the feature is built into the PS5 and works with many existing USB or analog stereo headsets. Use a personalized profile or the preset you prefer, then evaluate it in the games you actually play. Keep it enabled when the added positioning helps you, and switch profiles or turn it off when a particular game or headset sounds clearer without it.

Is Tempest 3D Audio a special headphone format?
No. Tempest is the PS5’s processing system, while the headset receives ordinary left and right playback channels. A compatible stereo headset can therefore reproduce the rendered result without carrying a proprietary Tempest format.
Can I connect third-party wireless headphones by Bluetooth alone?
Sony’s FAQ says third-party Bluetooth-only wireless headsets are not supported directly. Look for a model-specific USB receiver or use a wired connection that the manufacturer identifies as PS5-compatible.
Why can two players prefer different 3D-audio profiles?
Perceived sound position depends on each listener’s hearing and ear shape. The PS5’s five presets and personalized profile exist so players can choose the rendering that sounds closest to their own ear level rather than relying on one universal setting.
Does moving my TV require another 3D-audio setup?
For TV-speaker 3D audio, yes: Sony’s current instructions recommend measuring again after changing the TV position, seating position or room environment. The DualSense microphone measurement is tied to the listening arrangement used during setup.
