PlayStation Plus cloud streaming lets eligible subscribers start certain games on a PS5 console or PlayStation Portal without downloading the game first. The important save-data distinction is that a streamed game uses PlayStation’s game-streaming storage, while a downloaded copy saves to the console. Those locations do not merge automatically. To change from streaming to a download, or the other way around, you must copy the save through PlayStation Plus cloud storage. Cloud streaming requires PlayStation Plus Premium, an adult account, a supported country or region, a qualifying title and broadband internet. Sony’s current feature page lists 5 Mbps upload and download as the minimum to start a session, with higher recommendations for higher resolutions.
What is PlayStation Plus cloud streaming?
Cloud streaming runs a supported game on PlayStation’s servers and sends the playable session to your compatible device, so the game does not have to be downloaded or installed before you start. It is a PlayStation Plus Premium benefit, not a feature included with every PlayStation Plus tier.

The catalog includes some Game Catalog and Classics Catalog titles and some eligible digital PS5 games. Eligibility is title-specific and can change by country or over time, so ownership of a game or inclusion in a PlayStation Plus catalog does not by itself prove that the game can stream. Use Sony’s Cloud Streaming Game Finder and feature page to check a particular title.
Cloud streaming is different from Remote Play. Streaming from the cloud uses PlayStation’s online service; Remote Play sends a game running on your own console to another device. The save rules in this guide concern cloud-streamed games.

Which games, devices and regions are eligible?
Eligibility has three separate parts: the game, the device and the account’s location. All three must qualify before the streaming option appears.
| Eligibility area | What Sony currently says |
|---|---|
| Games | Select PS5 games from the Game Catalog, Classics Catalog and eligible digital PS5 library titles. Not every PlayStation Plus game or owned game is streamable. |
| PS5 console | Supported PS5 games can be launched through the cloud without a local download. |
| PlayStation Portal | The current cloud-streaming selection is PS5 games. Do not assume every PS4 or PS5 title can be played on Portal. |
| Account | An active PlayStation Plus Premium subscription and an adult PlayStation account are required. Child accounts are not eligible for this cloud-streaming feature. |
| Location | Cloud streaming is limited to countries and regions Sony lists on its feature page. The US page includes the United States, Canada, Japan and a number of European countries, with exclusions for some overseas territories. |
Because the supported-country list and game catalog are changeable, check the current regional PlayStation page rather than relying on an old list or assuming that a service available on one account’s trip will work everywhere.
What internet connection does cloud streaming require?
Sony lists 5 Mbps upload and 5 Mbps download as the minimum to establish a cloud-streaming session. Its published recommendations rise with the target resolution:
| Target resolution | Sony’s recommended speed |
|---|---|
| 720p | 13 Mbps |
| 1080p | 23 Mbps |
| 1440p | 38 Mbps |
| 2160p | 52 Mbps |
These are PlayStation’s published requirements and recommendations, not a performance guarantee. Sony notes that the result varies with the game and the quality of the network environment. A connection that passes a speed test can still produce a poor session if it is unstable or congested, so judge the connection by consistency as well as headline speed.
- Use the minimum figures as a starting threshold, not as a promise of smooth high-resolution play.
- Compare your measured upload and download speeds with the resolution you want to use.
- If a session repeatedly struggles, test again when other household traffic is stopped and check whether the issue follows the network rather than one game.
Where does a streamed game save its progress?
A streamed PlayStation Plus game saves to PlayStation’s game-streaming storage. A game downloaded to a PS5 or PS4 saves to that console’s storage. They are separate save locations even when the streamed and downloaded versions are the same title.
| Play mode | Save location | Changing device or mode |
|---|---|---|
| PlayStation Plus game streamed to a supported device | PlayStation game-streaming storage | You can resume streaming on another compatible streaming device without a separate transfer step. |
| Game downloaded to PS5 or PS4 | The console’s local storage | Console-save synchronization or a manual cloud-storage copy is needed when moving the progress to another system or to streamed play. |
Streaming a game does not place its save in the same console-save slot used by a downloaded copy. Sony explicitly says that saves are not automatically transferred between streamed and downloaded game types. This is the reason a game can appear to start with no progress after you change modes even though you used the same account.

Can I continue a streamed game on another device?
Yes, within the supported streaming ecosystem. Sony says a subscriber can resume a streamed game on another compatible streaming device without taking an additional transfer step. The convenience applies to streamed play itself; it does not turn a streamed save into a local console save.
For example, you can stop a qualifying PS5 game streamed on a PS5 console and later resume the streamed session on a compatible PlayStation Portal. If you instead download that game to the PS5, the downloaded version uses console storage and requires a cloud-storage copy before it can use the streaming progress.
How do I transfer a streamed save to a downloaded game?
The transfer is a two-stage process: copy the streamed save to PlayStation Plus online storage, then copy it from online storage to the console. Keep the game, account and save version consistent while you perform both stages.
On a PS5
- Start from the account that created the streamed progress and confirm that the title is available in your streaming history or library.
- Press the PS button to open Control Center, select the PlayStation Plus card, and choose Manage Saved Data.
- Select the streamed game’s saved data and use the copy command to place it in PlayStation Plus online storage.
- Open Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings, choose the relevant PS5 or PS4 game-save category, and use the cloud-storage download or copy command shown for that title.
- Launch the downloaded game and verify that the expected progress appears before deleting or replacing any local save.
Menu wording can differ according to whether the title is a PS5 or PS4 game, but the essential sequence is always streaming storage to online storage, then online storage to console storage.
On a PS4
- Open Application Saved Data Management.
- Choose Saved Data in Game Streaming Storage.
- Select the game and choose Copy to Online Storage.
- Use the online-storage copy or download path and select the downloaded game’s console storage as the destination.
- Start the installed game and check the save before making further progress.
Sony documents these device-specific procedures in its Save and transfer PlayStation Plus game progress support article. If your console shows slightly different labels, follow the destination shown in the menu: online storage for the intermediate copy, then console storage for the downloaded version.
How do I move a downloaded save into streaming storage?
Reverse the same process. First place the local console save in PlayStation Plus online storage, then select it as the source when copying to the game-streaming storage destination.

PS5 workflow
- Open Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings.
- Select the game’s saved data and copy or upload the local save to PlayStation Plus online storage.
- Press the PS button, open the PlayStation Plus card, and choose Manage Saved Data.
- Select the online save and copy it to the streamed game’s storage when that destination is offered.
- Start the title through cloud streaming and confirm that the transferred progress loads.
PS4 workflow
- Open Application Saved Data Management and choose the console’s saved-data area.
- Copy the selected game save to Online Storage.
- Return to the online-storage copy or download command and choose the streaming-game storage destination.
- Launch the game as a stream and verify the save.
Do not treat automatic console synchronization as a substitute for this transfer. Automatic synchronization keeps console and cloud saves aligned according to the console’s rules; it does not silently move a save into game-streaming storage.
Do PS Plus saves sync automatically?
Automatic behavior depends on the console generation and the type of save. PS5 console saves can synchronize with cloud storage when auto-sync is configured. PS4 saves upload automatically when auto-upload is enabled, but a PS4 save generally must be downloaded manually to PS5 console storage before a PS5-installed game can use it.

PS5 console saves
Manage the feature through Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings. For PS5 games, Sony describes console and cloud saves syncing to the most recent data when synchronization is configured. This is a console-to-cloud workflow, separate from the streamed-game storage used by cloud play.
PS4 saves
On a PS4, auto-upload is configured under Application Data Management. The upload protects the console save in online storage, but the PS5-installed version needs a deliberate download to PS5 storage. That extra step is why a PS4 save may be visible in the cloud yet absent from an installed PS5 game.
Cloud-storage limits
Sony lists 100 GB for PS5 saved data and 100 GB for PS4 saved data. It also lists a maximum of 1,000 PS4 saved-data files. These limits apply to PlayStation Plus cloud storage; they do not mean that every streamed title has a separate 100 GB allocation in game-streaming storage. See the current PlayStation Plus cloud-storage support page for management details.
How does streaming compare with downloading?
Neither mode is universally better. The right choice depends on a title’s eligibility, your connection and whether avoiding a local installation matters more than offline access and simple console-save handling.

What should I check when a stream or save does not work?
The stream option is missing
- Confirm that the account has PlayStation Plus Premium, not only Essential or Extra.
- Check the title in Sony’s Cloud Streaming Game Finder; catalog inclusion alone is not enough.
- Verify that the account is an adult account and that the current country or region is supported.
- On Portal, check whether the game is a supported PS5 streaming title rather than assuming that a PS4 version qualifies.
The session will not start
- Run a connection test and compare both upload and download results with Sony’s 5 Mbps minimum.
- If you want a particular resolution, compare the result with Sony’s 13, 23, 38 or 52 Mbps recommendation.
- Repeat the test when other devices are not consuming bandwidth. Sony warns that network conditions and the individual game affect performance.
The game starts without my progress
- Check whether you launched the streamed or downloaded version; they read different save locations.
- If you changed modes, copy the save through online storage using the PS5 or PS4 procedure above.
- For a downloaded PS4 game on PS5, check that the save was manually downloaded to PS5 storage after it uploaded to the cloud.
Another device does not show the expected session
Resume is supported for streamed play on compatible devices, but a downloaded installation is a different workflow. Return to the streamed version of the game and the same account first; if you are switching to a local installation, perform the explicit cloud-storage transfer instead of waiting for an automatic conversion.
Is PlayStation Plus cloud streaming worth using?
Cloud streaming is most useful when you want to try an eligible game without waiting for a large download, need to conserve console storage, or want to move streamed play between a PS5 and PlayStation Portal. Downloading is the safer default when the title is not eligible, your connection is inconsistent, or you expect to move saves frequently without performing manual copies.
- Choose streaming first when the game appears in the current Game Finder, Premium is active, and your connection comfortably exceeds the desired resolution recommendation.
- Choose downloading first when you need dependable local access, the game is unavailable for streaming, or your household network cannot maintain a stable session.
- Plan a transfer whenever you change modes; make the online-storage copy before assuming the other version will see the same progress.
For current plan benefits, including the distinction between cloud storage and the Premium streaming benefit, consult PlayStation Plus support. Supported games, countries and technical recommendations can change, so verify those details immediately before relying on streaming for a trip or a new device.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a child account use PlayStation Plus cloud streaming if the family manager has Premium?
No. Sony’s requirement applies to the account starting the session: it must be an adult PlayStation account. A Premium subscription on a family manager’s account does not make a child account eligible for this feature.

The session may still be able to start because 5 Mbps is Sony’s minimum for establishing a stream. The higher figures are recommendations for specific resolutions, so Sony does not promise that the lower-speed connection will maintain those image-quality targets.
Are PS5 and PS4 cloud-save quotas shared?
Sony lists separate 100 GB capacities for PS5 saved data and PS4 saved data, plus a 1,000-file maximum for PS4 save files. Those limits describe PlayStation Plus cloud storage, not the game-streaming storage used while playing a streamed title.
Is PlayStation Portal cloud streaming the same as using Portal with Remote Play?
No. Cloud streaming launches an eligible PS5 game from PlayStation’s cloud service and requires Premium. Remote Play connects Portal to a game running on your own PS5, which is a separate feature with different availability and save behavior.
